KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Marcel Bally, PhD Head, Experimental Therapeutics, B.C. Cancer Agency’s Research Centre (Vancouver) Chair, Division of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Centre for Drug Research and Development (Vancouver) Professor, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, UBC Adjunct Professor, Pharmaceutical Sciences, UBC
Dr. Bally received his bachelor of science (1977) and master (1979) degree in biology from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. He obtained his PhD from the Department of Biochemistry at the University of British Columbia (1984). Dr. Bally is an authority in drug delivery, anti-cancer drug combinations and drug evaluation in animal models of disease. His research interests focus on the development and characterization of novel lipid-based nanopharmaceuticals (LNs) for use in the treatment of cancer. The diversity of his funded projects and collaborations reflect opportunities to purse an assortment of lipid-based drug carrier technologies as well as explore a number of therapeutic strategies involving the use of established (approved for human use) drugs and novel molecularly targeted drugs (e.g. small molecules, siRNA, anti-miRs). Dr. Bally is the Chair of the Division of Pharmacology and Toxicology within the Center for Drug Research and Development (CDRD; www.cdrd.ca); an organization aimed at addressing the growing commercialization gap between medical discoveries from academia and the opportunity to develop technology identified within academic labs to a stage where investments can be made to support clinical and commercial development. Dr. Bally’s role as Chair of this Division is to lead the organization’s efforts in drug evaluation in animal models of disease and to define the critical proof-ofconcept data needed to support development of promising technologies that are being partnered with CDRD. To date his research efforts have led to many novel drug carrier technologies with the potential to improve the therapeutic activity of drugs useful in the treatment of cancer. He has published 191 scientific articles, 131 published abstracts and 18 book chapters. In addition he holds 49 patents/patent applications some of which are linked to FDA/Health Canada approved anticancer drugs, one product in late stage development and several others in early stage clinical trials and preclinical development. Dr. Bally and the Investigational Drug Program that he leads at the BC Cancer Agency work with academic and industrial collaborators to help them develop products destined for use in human clinical trials. This unit led the preclinical, manufacturing and drug development aspects of several lipid nanoparticle formulations. This would include (i) Myocet, an approved liposomal formulation of doxorubicin; (ii) Marqibo, a liposomal formulation of vincristine which has recently been approved by the FDA; and (iii) a fixed ratio liposomal formulation of Irinotecan (CPT-11)/Floxuridine (FUDR). 2
