HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT BEING A UBC PHARMACY PRACTICE EDUCATOR?

Office of Experiential Education

WHY PRECEPT? WHY GET INVOLVED WITH UBC? Your site is a catalyst for learning that will help students put theorized knowledge into practice and help them transition to the work environment. With the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC as your partner, you will be a coach and mentor to students in assisting them to be practice ready.

“Precepting is a two way street, you learn as much from the experience as the student learns from you.” – Michael Lam, Pharmacist “Precepting allows you to interact with engaging and energizing students to keep upto-date with what is happening in pharmacy practice and research in a very time effective manner.” - Marilynn Boyce, Pharmacist

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PRECEPTING? Our practice educators are committed professionals who volunteer their time to give back to the profession. Students are active learners – not observers – who are eager to apply didactic knowledge learned in the classroom to a real work environment and are motivated to learn about pharmacy practice. Students often bring new knowledge and innovative ideas to the practice site, and can assist with running preventative programs like cholesterol screening, blood pressure monitoring, sleep assessments, medication adherence and diabetes clinics.

“Thanks [for the experience], I feel that I’m prepared for the challenges that await me. Thank you for giving us this opportunity to learn.” – 4th year student

WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO AS A PRACTICE EDUCATOR? There are currently four different clerkships offered in the BSc Pharmacy program. All you have to do is contact our office and a course coordinator will be in touch to discuss which clerkship would be best suited to your practice site. We will walk you through the required documentation. Practice educators are expected to (1) be familiar with the learning activities for each clerkship, (2) provide regular and ongoing feedback to the student and (3) provide an evaluation of the student’s progress on rotation that is submitted to UBC.

WHAT PRECEPTOR DEVELOPMENT SUPPORTS ARE AVAILABLE? • Online Preceptor Resource Centre • Library Access to UBC Online with Campus Wide Log In • Teaching Skills for Pharmacy Practice Educators booklet • Three Face to Face Workshops a year • Site Visitations • Available via phone or email

WHAT ARE OTHER PEOPLE SAYING ABOUT PRECEPTING? “Allows you to provide students with experiences that you cherished when you were previously a student.” – Amandeep Khun-Khun, Preceptor “Preceptorship [is an experience] I feel a professional calling to be a part of [and I ] ..feel very obliged to pay forward.” - Curtis Harder, Preceptor “Preceptors put in so much time and effort to train and teach their students, that students hope to one day aspire to become great preceptors like their mentors.” – 4th year student “Thanks for teaching me everything you know, I have learned a lot and I believe the best way to give back would be to use [what I have learned] in my practice.” – 4th year student
