the ubyssey’s year in review

editor’s note t ’s hard to summarize a year in a Ireally few hundred words — so I won’t try. Instead we’ve given you

an entire issue that tries to span what this weird, wonderful year was. Much like everything we’ve done this year, these 16 pages were born out of a labour of love, but certainly aren’t perfect. Even after 100 years — oh, you didn’t hear, we turned 100 this year? — we haven’t nailed it, nor will we likely ever. But I am so unbelievably proud of the roster of people whose photos you see below this note and whose names you see to the right.

Through early-morning copyediting, late-night study sessions, breaking news and months-long features investigations, tears leaking out of our eyes at any given opportunity and bouts of uncontrollable laughter, we have been one team, one fight. I hope that we’ve infused some of this (chaotic) energy into our work this year, and done this campus justice by reporting on student issues, fostering accountability, holding power to account and telling stories that wouldn’t have otherwise been heard. We can’t say that we always nailed it, but we can say that

we worked hard and we cared (a bit too much). Speaking of working hard, we’d like to thank our tireless staff: without them, we would be nothing. Whether they volunteered once or wrote a hundred pieces, they are the backbone of this paper. We merely curated their work for you while yelling at each other about our lives in closed-door conference rooms. Cheers to the first rough draft of history, Samantha McCabe

since lines what is a since line? The first time “founded in 1918” appeared in the paper was on September 15, 1989. The ‘since’ line, which blends office inside jokes and the founding date, was first seen on September 17, 1993. The first since line was “Loving the AMS since 1918.” Obviously our feelings are still the same. — Angela O’Donnell, unofficial office historian

Two years after the first march protesting Donald Trump’s inauguration, the Women’s March in Vancouver remains part of a global movement — but has now shifted its focus inwards to Canada. The rally on January 19 put the spotlight on Canadian institutions and injustices.

UBC hosted the 2018 U Sports men’s soccer national championship in November 2018. The Thunderbirds’ men’s soccer team lost to the Carleton Ravens in the national quarterfinals. The University of Montreal Carabins took home the championship trophy.

In the home-hosted nationals, held from February 21 through February 23, the Thunderbirds came out on top in the 2019 U Sports Odlum Brown Swimming Championships — the teams’ third win in as many years.

illustrations of the year

This year, I had the amazing opportunity to work with a team of creative, talented and driven illustrators! I couldn’t have asked for a better year and a better illustrations team. A big shout-out to everyone who provided illustrations to articles this year and shared their unique art styles with The Ubyssey! Thank you to everyone who volunteered, Ella Chan Ubyssey illustrations coordinator

jack yuan

I took up illustration at a young age because I always loved the idea of showing others cool concepts that I’d cooked up in my head. The idea of giving others joy also brings me a sense of fulfilment. Lastly, it’s just really fun!

I grew up drawing moustaches for every single picture I found in my textbooks. When I was done with all of them... I started drawing people to give them moustaches.

alex vanderput

This year, I was struggling to find somewhere at UBC where I could feel like I fit in. I’m so glad I found out about illustrating for The Ubyssey and decided to try it out. It has honestly been the highlight of my term. I love having the opportunity to be creative (I’m in science) and getting to see my artwork in print!

maja maj

Like most people, I’ve been making art since I was a kid, but I started to properly fall in love with digital illustration after I bought my first drawing tablet. Over the years, my style has evolved and currently I am most interested in graphic design, minimalism, paper craft and expression of the human body. I’ve always found art to be a very rewarding skill and pastime, and I love noticing how it’s being used in the world around me!

kristine ho

For this piece, I really wanted to convey the weight and scope of the emotional labour that racialized faculty can end up carrying. I hope that the tilted angles and shadow, as well as the size and placement of the people, captured that sort of physical and psychological gravity.

14 the ubyssey’s year in review

In the final edition of our T-Birds Q&A for the 2018/19 school year, we are taking the questions to our very own team of sports columnists here at The Ubyssey and asking them to reflect on a year full of expectations, upsets and unexpected triumphs.

Best Thunderbird team of the year?

Most disappointing team this year?

Underrated athlete of the year?

Athlete you expect big things from going forward?

Who will be the best/most eyecatching team next year?

The men’s soccer team.

With Michael O’Connor moving on to the CFL and Trivel Pinto moving on to somewhere else, the UBC football team missed out on making the most of a stellar graduating class.

UBC swimming — big dynasty energy.

Our fantastic swim teams, due to their consistency in bringing the championship banners home.

Maddison Penn from women’s basketball and Olivia Furlan from women’s volleyball.

Mason Bourcier. The sophomore point guard was the most important player for the basketball team this year, buried in a starting lineup of big stat producers.

I’m always going to have my eye on the women’s stellar goalie, Tory Micklash — eager to see her styling with those consistently impressive saves.

The men’s soccer team’s spectacular exit from the national tournament hosted at UBC was a sad but slightly funny ending to their season.

Grant Shephard, men’s basketball.

Garrett Hawkins. The rookie pitcher has already found his way into a young starting rotation for UBC baseball and has flashed great potential.

Baseball pitcher Garrett Hawkins.

With all the faith in my heart, I believe in the women’s hockey team, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled for their championship run next year.

Women’s cross country. They ran across the whole country.

Men and women’s swimming teams. UBC swimming might be the most dominant program in U Sports right now.

The person in the Thunderbird costume — what a thankless gig.

Tory Micklash. She was the backbone of a team that exceeded expectations and will challenge for nationals next year as long as she is in the crease.

Men’s field hockey. It’s supposed to be played on ice, duh.

The Thunderbird Marching Band.

I expect big things from Thomas Gardner. Men’s soccer will be one of the favourites to win nationals next year, but whether they succeed will depend on the play of their star midfielder.

Football. They had the talent to win Canada West but dropped a heartbreaker in the semi-final at home.

The volleyball squads.

Men’s basketball, no doubt. They sent an almost brand-new lineup to nationals this year. They’ll send five even more experienced players at the end of next season.

What was the best sports moment of the year?

The best team next year will be the men’s basketball team. Most of their starters are returning, so it would not be a surprise if they win nationals for the first time since 1972.

Men’s soccer. They had an outstanding regular season, only losing one game, but that did not correlate into doing well at nationals. They lost every game in an utterly disappointing fashion.

Maxwell James from men’s hockey.

Olivia Furlan from the women’s volleyball team transitioned from playing almost exclusively as a go-to outside hitter last season to being the setter this year with 755 assists.

Men’s basketball. If the fourth-year players return, the cohesion we saw this year should allow them to make another run at the national tournament.

Mikayla Ogrodniczuk’s tweet alleging gender inequality in the hockey playoff schedule. Though the policy that resulted currently only applies to hockey, this entire event was a huge stepping stone in the direction of gender equality within Thunderbird athletics and was a brave step from a Thunderbird athlete to call the department’s scheduling into question. I hope this translates into continued change, across not only UBC Athletics, but U Sports as a whole.
