VISION STATEMENT
CONTENTS
Our studio focuses on the downtown west end within Calgary as it is currently lacking the appeal that would otherwise attract visitors. This creates a clear divide and lack of character within the area as over 94% of the current towers are geared towards residential uses. Combined with this, the amount of office vacancies leaves many wondering how the west end can adapt to future uses and demographics. Each student has conducted their own site analysis of the area and have come to the consensus that there is a clear lack of identity and varying sources of attraction causing many streets and parks to be otherwise empty while being littered with parking lots. This creates an opportunity for our studio to explore and investigate ways to instill a sense of character within the west end. Each student addresses these concerns in their own way, but the overall aspect to our projects is to re-think the tall tower typology as a means to create a new level of attraction to this area. This in turn, has the potential to create a new vibrant west end, where people want to go to instead of just passing through to get to their destination. Based on this, everyone chose three out of these five design drivers which include: economy, infrastructure, public realm, skyline, and lifestyle. It is up to the students to choose a primary driver which makes up for 50% of the program, while the other 50% is split among the remaining two. Beyond this, we have also categorized all of the projects based on the programmatic functions which include: commercial, recreation, residential, energy, agriculture, arts, and entertainment. Each student utilizes some combination of these programs which are based upon the design drivers mentioned previously.

Programmatic Breakdown Utilizing the lifestyle driver as the primary programmatic element, this would allow for life skills training, learning, teaching, and volunteer opportunities, as well as becoming a central activity node within the west end. This node would then provide the community with recreational, leisure and educational amenities that are currently missing within this area. These notions would revolve around urban agriculture as a means re-define how a community centre and residential tower can function
The strategy used to organize the InterSeed revolves around sectioning off and stacking the program based on community and networking, activity zones, and urban agriculture which circles around a large open atrium. Each level is dedicated to serve a purpose of integration for the homeless demographic ranging from inclusion and attraction at grade, transitional spaces at level 2, skill development in level 3, and deployment of these skills in level 4 11
Plaza Render
Through some data, daily patterns of a working class and a homeless person we diagrammed. Person A is generally pretty typical with work taking up the majority of their day with leisure activities occurring during the evening. On the other end of the spectrum, data has shown that a person B bounces from shelter to shelter depending on what their need is at that moment in time such as food, social activities or to rest.

My project seeks to unify these aspects by creating a situation where person B goes to work in the urban agricultural component where the food is prepared and sold in the resident run cafe where person A stops at before work which promotes social mixing. After work, person A volunteers their time as a part of person B’s skill training. After which both person A and B partake in recreation activities taken place in the community centre where bonding can occur. After a tiring day, both people go to rest in an mixed income model housing apartment. Community Centre Perspective Section

NESTING EARTH
Using pre-exisitng islands of unused green space, Nesting Earth creates a pedestrian first mass that aims to connect pedestrian flows outwise seperated by major roadways. The space is activiated by studios, workshops, galleries, and a markets that utilize materials dropped off at the upcycling depot. Through this programming, people may learn skills and create item made of upcylced materials. A tower for drop-in housing, with 3D Printed pods are added to compensate for the lack of affordable housing in the area.

CYCLIC FLOW
The project aims to create vibrant Downtown West that offers improved lifestyle for all hours of the day as well as self-sufficient means of generating revenue. This is explored through cyclic flow of resources and economy. The project consists of water based programs that produces graywater which is recycled through onsite graywater system and resued by programs of the building. Precipitated water harvesting and graywater system serve as the main infrastructure of the project, and design decisions are made to address that.

With a devastating economic blow from the covid-19 pandemic, alberta was by far the hardest hit. It did not only deal with pandemic restrictions, but also a collapse in world oil prices resulted in high rates of unemployment, emotional, physical, and financial distress. as a result of this matter, the fundamental concept of this project concentrates on a mixed-use building focusing on the health and well being of the users and potential tourism attraction. the project is inspired by the natural surroundings of alberta and its natural settings, landscape, and mountains. the gradual morphes impact the user’s perception while induces a sense of belonging and tranquility.

SELFHOOD
The massing of the project is metaphorically based on the concepts and components which constitute a motherboard in a computing system. The site plan responds to the transition from the cultural east end of Steven Ave and commercial core to the proposed Tech Hub in the west.
PRAGYA SALHAN The intent of the project is to create an identity for Downtown West with programmatic interventions that will liven the community and extend the lifestyle of Steven Avenue beyond its current bounds.
