Research Agenda and Process Overview The project is a metaphorcal exploration of sea level rise using photography. The subject of the project is sea level rise. So I want to make an installation. It can float on the water. Using the reaction force of seawater. And in the previous design, I applied photography technology. This point appeared in my paper. So I need to further confirm this design. This installation can carry a camera on the water. It is a floating installation which wll be deployed in the sea of images and videos for reseach.I can show the sea level rise caused by the high tide. Through the scales on the wall of the sea we can see the height change of the sea level. This is the fastest way to indicate sea level rise. Maybe this model will always float on the beach in the future. It can record changes in sea level for fifty years. The camera uses solar power to generate continuous recordings.

Research Questions 1.

How can installation design effectively represent natrual elements, specifically the sea level rise?

2. How can installation design build and expand people’s imaginaries of nature and the natural environment? 3. How can we use installations to raise environmental awareness?

Research Statement

Significance and Contribution We often ignore environmental issues in our lives, Because modern society and science and technology develop rapidly. People are paying more and more attention to the improvement of the quality of life. Therefore, they does not pay attention to the consequences of coal and natural gas combustion. And the serious consequences of the release of carbon dioxide and the cutting of trees. People have just begun to think that the earth’s resources are inexhaustible. So sea level rise has been unavoidable. It is a huge disaster in the future. Maybe we need some installation to remind people to raise awareness of protecting the environment. This installation can be displayed indoors. It also reflects its artistry.

Methodologies 1.

Use photography from a mobile platform as a means to document with sea levels and tides change.

2. Take film for the effect of sea level rise on surrounding things

Design Proposal I will design an installation. I observed people in their daily lives. Ignore the problem of the ecological environment. It can carry a camera to walk on the water. I’m going to make modle. It is sprayed with a waterproof coating on the outside.

a few curtains in the space. It can guarantee that my movie is projected. I will design a semicircular screen. Then put six movie clips on the screen. Extend it to the ground if you can. This completely copies the beach. Show with the effect of the sound. People seem to be on the My design was inspired by the real beach. water strider. I want to do it with the concept of bio-mimesis. This will be more interesting. Four legs using float ball. The end of the legs make it float. The purpose is to ensure that the camera moves naturally. At the other end I will use rope to control its direction. The overall characteristics from to hollow design. Finally, interact with people in the showroom. I will hang

Proposal & Context

Design Research Context Field of Work Last semester I wrote a thesis about the application of photography in landscapes. I analyzed how Tarkovsky and other film masters filmed and what techniques they used to shoot. There are also their shooting techniques. I want to apply them to my design. Because my design is about the use of photography at sea level. Project highlighting sea level rise and climate change. It’s also a poetic project using video inspirate by the work of film makers like Tarkovsky.Tarkovsky said,“ When a film creator says that he needs to make a film to make money, so he has the power and money resource to make the film he dreams. It is purely a deception, or even worse, a selfdeception. He will never make a film he wants to make. ” (1980).

Strandbeests is a “wind bionic beast” invented by the dynamic sculpture artist Theo Janssen in the Netherlands. It relies on mechanical principles and natural winds to move forward. The structural ingenuity lies in the rational use of balance in the transformation of physical variables, and the energy conversion rate is very high.He created a huge group of beach creatures whose wind is “food”. They rely on wind energy to operate. They use simple sensors to avoid obstacles. When the storm comes, they know how to piling and fix themselves in the wet sand. He allowed the creatures to compete with each other, selecting the winners to recreate and evolve into more and more complex creatures. These organisms use the wind system as the basis for their actions.

Design Methodologies I got inspiration from the animals. The otter can float on the water by relying on the limbs. The float I used is crucial. So I tested its buoyancy in the river. A float can support the weight of a bottle of water. So I used 17 floats to support my model and camera.

Critical Design Elements Clearly identify the key design elements in your proposal 1.

The design of the surfboard is important. Because I want to make sure that gopro is a natural movement on the sea.

2. About the volume of the model. I need to make sure the model can drift on the sea. Instead of being submerged by the sea. I installed the float bll.The float ball can be used to make it foat. 3. This design is important in the direction of control. So I will use a rope to connect the two ends of the model. I will take the other two on the shore.

Process & Methods

Prototyping and testing To test my installation I can float on the water. I printed a model through 3dprint. Because the material of the 3d model is durable nylon. It is very light. Its four feet come from expanding foam. It can still play a role in reducing the weight of the model and gopro itself . But this is just an experiment. In the final design I will use PVC pipe only for my model.PVC pipe has good tensile and compressive strength, but it is not as flexible as other plastic pipes. I use gopro because of its small size. It can be waterproofed on the Folkseton. It will follow the sea and take a dynamic videos.

The float is characterized by light weight and small size. So I installed two floats on my legs. Nine floats are mounted on the main body of the model. To ensure that the model can float on the surface of the sea.

And I used nails to And easy to transform. Then I combine them. need to go to the workshop to cut to the length I need. And put About the connection between them together.First I will cut off the camera and the model. I the pvc cutting machine. Then chose the bracket that comes how to bend the pvc. Because with the camera. pvc will deform when heated. So I use a heat gun to bend it into About the connection between the shape I want. Finally, connect the model and the float. I will several parts with an electric drill. connect with cable ties. It is characterized by light weight. In the process of creating a The bundle is strong and not easy model. Control Systems Finally I need to put my model in the water. There are many sports cameras around it. They have WiFi on them. All I need to connect via WiFi on my phone. To achieve the purpose of controlling them. At the same time, I controlled the direction of installation by rope on the shore. To prevent drowning by water.I need to control the direction of the model on the shore. In order to shoot the video I want. And I will watch the dynamics of the camera shooting through my mobile phone. Gopro can be connected via Bluetooth. This causes the picture to appear on my phone screen. This is good for better control. In the later show. It will be more interactive. You put yourself in the sea and watch everything. People can experience the feeling of floating on the sea.

Occupation and Interaction Because my design is related to movies. So I need a relatively wide space. I chose the space on the left side of the classroom. The windows of the space have shutters. It blocks light. Finally I need to play my movie with the projector. The final proposal shows that I need to project my film on the curtain. I will use it to make a semi-circular screen or paved ground. The reason for this is that I want to copy the beach in my showroom. I will shoot the high tide to show the feeling of rising sea level. And displayed through the projector.

Dissemination and Future Work This work will have different inspirations in future life. Maybe we can use it to drive on the sea. Because sea level rise is inevitable. Most of the land and houses will be inundated. If you are inspired by my design to create a vehicle suitable for human driving is the best development. Therefore, we must pay more attention to the natural environment. Maybe this model will always float in the sea in the future. It can record sea level changes for fifty or one hundred years. The camera uses solar power to generate continuous recordings. This saves energy. Prevent sea level rise. And always remind people of the dangers at sea level. Thus people can save energy and protect the ecological environment.
