FINALS WEEk!!! Good luck on finals everyone! :)

FROM THE PRESIDENT(S) Hello! When you reflect back on this past Circle K year, what do you think of? For me, I think of the numerous hours of service we poured into the community; the many laughs we shared over food and boba; and the strong leaders we’ve become. Thank you for making this past year one to remember. UC Berkeley Circle K holds a special place in my heart, and so do all of you. My home away from home, my ohana. To the graduating class of 2016, we did it! Congratulations! As all of us will be moving onto the next chapter of our lives, remember that you’ll always find a family in Circle K. Best of luck to all of you and keep in touch. To all of you staying for another year in Circle K, make the most of it! In my opinion, you are surrounded by so many inspiring and fun individuals who are deeply rooted in service to the community and to others. That’s something that’s hard to come by – it’s something truly amazing. You are the future of our organization and I have no doubt the new heights all of you will bring this club to. Even though we will be parting our separate ways, please know that I’ll always be here for you! Thank you again for making my Circle K experience one of the best parts of my college career. This isn’t a goodbye, just a see you later! In service and love, Erinn Wong

Hello UC Berkeley Circle K! A year has come and gone, but many times when arriving at an end, it is best to remember the beginning. Whether you are a first year, graduating this year, or somewhere in between, I want you to take a moment to remember the moment you decided to let Circle K be your home away from home. It may have been a large service project like Cazadero or a small one like Hands on Science. Or it may have been cheering your heart out at FTC & DCON or a laughing during one of our socials. Or to be honest, it may have been the people that made you want to stay just a little longer before diving into Circle K. Whatever it may have been, I am proud of this club, its accomplishments, its ever-growing potential and each one of you . To all of you who are graduating, thank you for being a part of our journey and best of luck on your future endeavors. To all club members, Circle K is always here for you so stay in touch over summer and I’ll see you soon! ~Ana Chavez (Add me on Snapchat: anagc14)

FROM THE EDITOR Hi Circle K Family! My name is Annie and I will be serving as your 2016-2017 Publications Chair! I honestly can’t believe it’s already been a month since my term started: everything has been a haze! I’m really excited for the rest of this term and producing more newsletters as well as other publications thingys! I would really like to thank all the people I’ve bothered (one too many times!) in order to make this newsletter possible. I really couldn’t have done it without everyone’s contribution and thank you very much (even if I may have been just a teeeeeny bit annoying hehe). Thank you to all the members as well for contributing to the google forms for the fun parts of this newsletter! Also, a special thank you to Remy and Heyun--who have always answered my continuous questions :) You guys are the best predecessors! So as my first newsletter is published and there are three more to go, I hope you will enjoy this newsletter, especially messages from some very special people and articles written by our very own members! Read on and I hope you enjoy(ed) both the banquet and this newsletter! I look forward to this term and continuing to build friendships with everyone! Please give me feedback so I can improve my future newsletters! ~Annie Chen(: IMPORTANT: Do you see a theme going down each page (hint hint)?........... welllll, it’s basically going deeper and deeper down into the ocean if you haven’t gotten it. Make sure to look for that!!!~ (P.S. Yes, that is a baby photo of me....)

FROM THE DISTRICT GOV Hey UC Berkeley! I hope you all enjoyed another golden year filled with service, leadership, and fellowship! It’s amazing to see all that you have accomplished in the short span of a year! UC Berkeley Circle K has always meant a lot to me and I just wanted to let you know that the family you have here is one of the best throughout our district. I hope you have all had the chance to experience the many wonders brought to you by the board of ’15-’16 as they constructed a brighter future but never forget that Circle K always lives on in our hearts. I hope you are all ready for a new year full of friends, memories, and save files as your pick your role and delve into an uncharted pixelated world that is simply waiting for your encounter. As a final note, I encourage you to try new things, meet new people, and last but not least, have fun! College is all about living the moment and making memories that will last for the rest of your lives. Stay wonderful, stay golden. Tae Hyun Lim ’15-’16 District Governor

| FROM THE ADvisor Hello Circle K! Congratulations on an absolutely amazing year! I hope you all can look back on this year and be reminded of the friendships you’ve made, the things you’ve learned about yourself and others, and the people you have effected both in the community and in this organization. To those of you who are graduating, I hope that you can look back at Circle K as something that has enhanced your college experience. For many of you, I saw you enter this club as a freshman and now see you graduating! It has been awesome to get to know each of you and to see you all grow throughout the years. Congratulations on completing this chapter in your live. And to those of you who are continuing or starting your journey in this club, I cannot wait to see where you go and what you accomplish. I hope that you find your home here at Circle K, because it truly is an organization that can give you more than what you imagined. Looking forward to the future, Chris Tung (Kiwanis Advisor)

FRom the LTG(S) First of all, congratulations UC Berkeley to all your members for achieving your goals, striving to become better leaders, and going above and beyond as a club to set a strong example of what it means to be student leaders. I am constantly amazed at the effort of both you as individuals and collectively as a community. Now, quite honestly, no one knows exactly what the upcoming term will look like, however, one thing is most definitely certain. With the continuing efforts, smiles, and initiative that members continually possess you all will shine, and contribute in such a wonderful way to our golden division. Simply put, thank you, good luck, and GG. Monica Willemsz <3

Hi UC Berkeley Circle K! I can’t believe a year has already passed since the term began! It feels like just yesterday that I was writing the welcome message for Spring 2015’s Newsletter, and now here I am writing a farewell one for the Banquet 2016 Issue. Great job on such an amazing year! You’ve achieved so much in all aspects of the club: from service hours, creating new leaders, fundraising, MD&E, and everything in between, UCBCKI has truly helped to “build a better tomorrow.” Thank you for being such an amazing and welcoming club to all members. Thank you for being such an amazing home club. I’ve loved watching everyone grow this past year and seeing new leaders step up to take the club to even greater heights. Great job to the 2015-2016 Board, and good luck to the 2016-2017 Board! Love, Robert Rodriguez 2015-2016 Lieutenant Governor

FROM THE DISTRICT CHAIRS Dear UCBCKI, This past year, I had the opportunity to serve on the district board as the Publications Editor. Through this position, I was able to work with people from all over the California, Nevada, Hawaii District by chairing the District Public Relations Committee. Speaking of which, district committee applications are due the first week of May! But even if you don’t apply for a committee, go to a district event! I truly believe one of the special things about Circle K is the network of different people you’re able to interact with. But while it’s nice to visit different clubs, there’s nothing like coming back to UCBCKI – meetings in Dwinelle, meeting at Barrows Courtyard, and serving with all of you! Thank you all – first-year members, seniors, Incredible Inspectors, and more - for being my community throughout college! As I end my third year of college and involvement in Circle K, I can confidently say that CKI has shaped my college experiences and me into the person I am today. Love, Heyun Jeong

Dear UC Berkeley Circle K, I appreciate the opportunities, the memories, and the friends that you have given me. Thank you for helping a freshman find his passion for service, for supporting him as he developed his leadership skills from Projects Coordinator to Vice President of Service to District Service Chair, and for giving him friends who will last a lifetime. To all of those who are and will still be in Circle K, cherish every experience because everything is transient. Of all the organizations of which I have been a part, none has given me as much as this one. This organization has shaped my college career in such a way that I regret nothing, and if I had to start college over, Circle K would still be the first organization I join. I want to specifically shout out to the 2013-14 club board, the 2014-15 club board, the 2015-16 District Board, and the boyzroundhere. Much Love <3 Edison Xu

Hello, UC Berkeley Circle K! My name is Donald Franks, and I currently serve you all as your District Treasurer. I hope you all are excited for banquet and really use this opportunity to get to know one another! This year will be full of adventure—with a strong board at the wheel and awesome members as passengers, I can’t wait to see what journeys lie ahead. Enjoy banquet, and if you ever just want to talk, I’m here! ~Donald Franks

“I’m blessed to have been able to represent my family, UC Berkeley Circle K, on the CNH District Board this past year as the District Convention Chair, and hope that for all of you that went, you were able to truly enjoy and fully experience DCON 2016 | Service Baked Fresh. To the new generation of people in this organization that has supported me for four years, I would like to share with you some aphorisms that I’ve come to embrace and always keep in mind: The little things matter. Take leaps of faith. Find where you belong. Believe in yourself. Be passionate.” Love, Philip Nguyen

Hello UC Berkeley Circle K! I am humbled to be serving as the District Fall Training Conference chair this year. I am so proud to be from UC Berkeley Circle K and have my roots here with such wonderful people like y’all. Here’s a tip: apply for district committees! It’s honestly such an eye-opening experience working with Circle K-ers from all around CNH and you get to meet amazing people. However, nothing beats the friends you make at the home club level. Thank you to everyone that has made my past three years so great, and I can’t wait to make new memories with everyone during my last year at Cal! ~Claire Lee

SERVICE Spring Cazadero (BY: Manny ilasco) Over the weekend of April 15-17, UCBCKI, Berkeley Kiwanis, and some members of Golden Gate, went to Cazadero Performing Arts in order to work on the camp in preparation for its opening in the summer to students and families. That was my first time ever going to Cazadero so I was extra worried of how things would turn out. A lot of doubt came up if I had done enough to ensure the smooth sailing of this event, like if I made clear enough directions to the camp, or if I brought enough people to get all our work done. Happily, despite being short 4 people of 30, the event was a huge success thanks to all the hard work of the people who attended. We cleaned hundreds of mattresses and transported them and heavy bed frames all over the camp to the many cabins, put canopies over 25 cabins, put signs up, built decks and tent frames, picked up debris, swept, tiled, and dismantled and emptied a littered tool shed. As cliché as it sounds, it just amazes me how much work we can get done when we all work together since we completed all our tasks and more.

Overall, this was a really great event. I’m grateful for having the opportunity to get to know the Kiwanians and the members of Circle K better. I hope all of you who attended left with great memories, I know I did. For those who haven’t gone to Caz, I highly recommend it, I cried bittersweet tears when it was over. Lastly, I want to thank everyone who came to Caz one more time for I couldn’t have done this without you all. Eerin Wong: Thank you for always being there for us when we needed it. <3 #WeDidIt

Ana Chavez: You are an extremely qualified leader and you deserve all the wonderful opportunities that come your way. I’m so excited for all that great things that UCBCKI will accomplish under your leadership and I’m happy I’ll be along for the ride! ~Matt Chang

Ruiz: Shout out for being so friendly and enthusiastic. Thanks for making this year my most fun year at Berkeley. ~Jason

Philip: YOUR MOTHER’S DAUGHTER IS PROUD TO CALL YOU HER BROTHER ~Cecil

Heyun and Ryan: THANK YOU FOR BEING MY MUM AND DAD AND FOR RAISING ME WELL IN THE BEST FAMILY EVER AKA THE MAFIA AKA THE HOME OF THE WINNERS ~Shakira-k

Continuous Service (by: Gabe Otero) Continuous projects keep UC Berkeley Circle K rooted in service that constantly and effectively help our local community. This year we read to children, made crafts with the elderly, gave amazing dinner experiences to the less fortunate, taught children scientific experiments, participated in “give-it-forward” style dinners, and even helped animals socialize and exercise. These projects are what keep us continuously connected to the causes we care about, and they are the small efforts we make every month to make our home a better place. We were even able to participate in a new continuous project, working at the animal shelter, and not only helped animals in preparation for adoption but also learned about safe animal treatment and care. My personal favorite was talking to a guest I met at loaves and fishes about jumbo shrimp, and her family’s experiences as fishers. These small events really make the intimate, personal connections that make service the empowering tool that it is. Thank you for making those small impacts that can have a grand effect!

Concessions (By: Donald Franks) Concessions is an event unlike any other. In fact, UNR is the only other school in our district that participates in athletic concessions. Even though the day runs long, the opportunity to bond with people in your club, enjoy $5 hotdogs, free drinks, and the occasional spoiled candy brings together people of all types. Not only that, but you learn the ins and outs of Cal Culinary, refine your customer-interaction skills, and take home wonderful memories (or boxes of hotdogs-maybe both).

Stephanie Ruiz: When I hear the name “Stephanie Ruiz,” I think: (1) baller, (2) mentor and (3) person of deep compassion. First, you bank your 3’s like nobody else and you might as well change your name to Steph Curry. Second, I am so fortunate and proud to have had the opportunity to be your mentee. Third, I am deeply impressed with your dedication to reach out to members of the club to help them feel welcomed. You have a heart of gold my friend; thank you for all the memories this past year! ~Matty Chang<3

Mike: ILY UNCLE QUOKKA ~Cecil

Sean: THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP, ADVICE, AND BULLYING UNCLE SEAN ~Cecil

CAL DAY (By: Aaron Lee) Cal Day was a day where many prospective students and their families came to UC Berkeley to get a feel of the campus. Circle K had a table on Sproul and it was a great experience! We got to talk to many students, both new and current, about what Circle K was about and emphasized our three tenets: Service, Leadership, and Fellowship. We handed out all of our flyers and many were able to get a lot of sign-ups to our mailing list. Although Cal Day’s main priority was to persuade high-schoolers to come to UC Berkeley, Circle K focused on educating them on our organization so that no matter what university they chose they would know about Circle K. Chu: I know I was pretty busy this semester, but every time I did get a chance to get involved with Circle K you were always so happy and excited and it always made me want to come out more!! I hope to meet more people in Circle K that are as awesome as you!! Thanks for being you!

The Lair: Thank you to Sean Yoo, Mike Zhou, Alan Perez, and everyone who’s ever hung out with us/been to the lair/passed by and said hi for providing me with a sense of home away from home. ~Salmon

Gabe: Your devotion to service is unmatched, as is your knowledge of deep political and philosophical thinkers. I look forward to all the service opportunities next year! ~Matt Chang

HALL-OF-FAMER SPOTLIGHT: MIKE ZHOU Hello Beautiful Circle K People, Thank you for a wonderful four years here at Cal. When I came in as a freshman, I had no idea how much this club and organization would change me as a person. In high school, I volunteered often as a Key Clubber, but I never really thought about the quality of the community service or what kind of impact I was making. As a freshman I checked out Circle K at Berkeley, because it just felt right and easy to do. My first Circle K event was an Interfamily social on Cal Day before I even started school. After that event my fate was locked in and I was destined to join this club and be active. It’s been an awesome ride from being on club board for two years, a family head, international board, two district committees, and two international committees. All of these have been a unique and humbling experience that has definitely helped me grow as a person. If you have more time in Circle K, I recommend you make use of your short time at Cal and in UCB Circle K and just dive straight into it. Just go in with a fresh and positive outlook and you will not be disappointed. If you’re as lucky as me, you will make lifelong friends and everlasting memories. 2+2=4 2 cool 2 be 4gotten mike quokka Chu: Your devotion to the club is amazing! I know you will accomplish great things with your leadership skills, sense of responsibility, and strongwill! ~Matt

The Lair: shoutouts to the lairs and my boys for an awesome 4 years ~Mike

Erinn: Hi mentor, thank you for leading this amazing year in Circle K and for helping me get accustomed to Cal. You’ve been a great mentor and I’m proud to be your mentee and a member of your Kfam lineage ~Manny

Andrea: You artistic skills and creativity leave me in awe. I’m so impressed with your accomplishments on the scrapbook! I firmly believe that your hard work and love of the club will translate into stellar accomplishments next year! ~Matt

Everyone: Thank you all for making me feel welcomed in the club! Y’all are the best :D

Gavin: Thanks for being the BEST tabling partner I ever had. #SorryTao ~Anne

DCON: Service Baked Fresh SHAIRA SANTOS:

“I’d always heard about DCON, even back in high school when I was a freshman who drifted in and out of KIWINs. And although I was filled with regret every year I didn’t go, the truth is this: I am extremely grateful to have attended my first DCON as a Circle K member. Maybe others would disagree, but I felt that not being able to attend DCON earlier was a blessing. All those years I didn’t go in the past prepared me for the perfect culmination to my first (active) year in the Kiwanis family. No words can express how grateful I am for the bonds forged, achievements celebrated, and the memories created that weekend in March. It truly was a life-changing experience, and I’m already looking forward to next year.”

Cecil: CECILLLLL, YOU’RE A CUTIE PIE AND I LOVE YOU. <3 ~Anne

JASON CHOMMANARD:

“The weekend began with heavy traffic. It took us 8-9 hours to drive to LA, 2 hours of which was just getting to the 5. However, the mood gradually changed from bored to excitement. Once we got to the hotel, we listened to speeches from other students in the district running for district office. The next day, we went to workshops held by people from all over Cal-Nev-Hi. My favorite was Donald Frank’s fundraising workshop where I planned a bake sale fundraiser with students from Fresno. While the workshops and caucusing were fun and informative, the highlight of Dcon was Saturday’s award dinner. We celebrated and reminisced on the past year, winning awards in nearly every category because of the hard work of our 2015-2016 board. There were few moments when we weren’t yelling “this is bear territory” or go bears.” The exhilaration and emotions continued into Sunday’s award breakfast; there was not a single dry eye in the room. I anticipate the tears will be brought back at Spring Banquet”.

Anne: Thank you for being a great friend this past semester! I Aaron: enjoy all our conversations and I deeply value our friendship, thanks for all the laughs and for watching Erased even though Sup Fam. you don’t like that show. I’m very excited to see all your creative ~Anne ideas come to life in your rendition of the scrapbook! ~Matt

Mike: IS THAT THE HALL OF FAMER?

Keith: You are an incredibly kind soul! I am happy to have Shaira: -pats gotten to know you this next year and I’m excited to see how headyou’ll help the club grow! ~Matt

SARAH PHAN:

“This year’s DCON was my last ever, and it definitely beat the time I had at DCON in my sophomore year. As usual, UC Berkeley Circle K was out there killing it, receiving the awards and recognition they undoubtedly deserve. Your experience at DCON definitely changes when you hold some sort of position as opposed to attending as a general member, but that doesn’t mean general members can’t have as great of a time as anyone else with a title. I had the privilege of attending DCON as a member of the District MD&E committee and co-hosted a workshop. I have hosted a handful of workshops in the past, but I think it’s safe to say that our MD&E workshop was one of the best I’ve been a part of. It was not being able to co-host a workshop that made it one of the best, but it was the conversations we had in the room. We discussed equity, inclusion, representation, and changing the focus from number of hours to meaningful service, all of which are topics that I am very passionate about. It was incredibly empowering and affirmed my values and the issues I see within the Kiwanis community. I believe there is much work to be done within our own community before serving others, but I know we can and will do better. Circle K has allowed me to spark important conversations and effectively spread a message that will hopefully lead to progressive change. I hope you all find ways to utilize the resources that Circle K has to offer (such as DCON) and make the change you want to see in your community.”

Manny: I still think you a teddy bear in disguise and your giggle is contagious! Your compassion for others, coupled with you strong sense of responsibility, will help you achieve great things as K-fam chair! ~Matt

GARY CHAN:

“The weekend before spring break, I decided to go to DCON, located in Southern California. From day one, since my DCON debut, I was undaunted by the three day long convention, despite constant warning that I would not be sleeping much. Whether that was courage or foolishness, it was probably the latter. When I finally got to DCON after the long ride, I was battered by the sheer amount of stimuli, leaving me overwhelmed. I dove headfirst into the stream of activity, attending the caucuses and deciding on the future of Circle K. That was by far my favorite part.”

Bryan: Thank you for being so kind towards me this past year. I have had so much fun bonding with you and I look forward to hanging out with you over the summer! #EverythinggoodisfromSanJose

Aaron, Matt, Austin, Gary: Cheers to an awesome next year! It’s gonna be fun as hell!

Gavin: Thanks for being da real MVP

James: Thank you for all the fun memories in Witty Welders! I’m extremely happy to call you my friend!
