Message from your Editor

Message from your President Welcome everyone! Whether you are a visitor, returning member, or a new friend, we are glad to have you here with us. Circle K is an extraordinary organization that has much to offer and define your college experience. It transforms your weekends into unforgettable memories, study nights into late night talks, free time into random adventures, and strangers to close friends. Circle K became my family away from home. Through service I found my passions, through fellowship I found my closest friends in the club and at other colleges, and through leadership opportunities I found the type of person I aspire to be everyday. Whether you are looking for something to do on weekends or for a community to smile with, your time here at Berkeley is limited and we would love to have you share it with us! Warms regards, ME

Hello!~~~ As a new school year starts, I hope everything has been relaxing and well these last two weeks. I cannot wait to meet all the new members and also hang out with the old members! Like always, I am thankful towards everyone who has helped contribute to this newsletter. I hope you are excited to start the new school year with Circle K! Not only does Circle K allow you to contribute to the community and help others, but it also gives you a second family and someplace to call home. For me, Circle K has and is a big part of my every day life. Personally, I cannot wait to see what is in store for this year! I really hope you enjoyed first gen and hope to see all of you at events and future meetings! ~Annie(: *SPECIAL THANKS to TAO for drawing most of the Berkeley signature buildings!~ Make sure to let him know!

SERVICE

CONTINOUS PROJECTS

Hands on Science is one of the most impactful service opportunities since you have the power to help youth students develop a sincere love for learning and science. Roughly every other Friday afternoon, we bring volunteers to a local elementary school and teach them cool science experiments. Past experiments have included mini lava lamps, homemade ice cream, and others! The best feeling in the world is when the students ask when we will be back next. ~Matthew Chang Start with a story is one of

our continuous service projects in which we lend and read books to children visiting Glen Dyer Detention Facility in Oakland. I love this project because of the direct interaction we get with the kids. You can see their excitement when they check out a book they're interested in or witness how engrossed they are in a book you're reading to them. ~Ryan Tsao I've only ever worked the first shifts of loaves and fishes, but I really like this event because I can be involved in the process of making food. For me, loaves and fishes is a really fun event because you can see your work come together to create something delicious that in the end someone will enjoy. We also get fed breakfast items! ~Jordan Fan

St. Mark's Soup Kitchen

Once a month, our club heads over to the St. Mark’s Church across the RSF to help their faculty with their monthly dinner. This wholesome meal is provided free of charge to any homeless person, and spending an afternoon preparing food or serving them helps everyone who goes to eat. Homelessness impacts many people in Berkeley, and volunteering at St. Mark’s definitely helps the homeless community out little by little. One can definitely see these small positive changes from the lively chatter. ~Java Villano

because it really impacts the lives of the animals. By walking and playing with dogs and playing with cats, it helps them become more adoptable. Not only can you help change their lives, but it also works really well as a nice stress-reliever! ~Annie Chen

my first event as a Circle K member so it'll always have a special place in my heart! It is always nice being able to talk to the residents there and making arts and crafts for them. I really enjoy hearing about their experiences and they are always also interested in leading about us. ~Stephanie Ruiz

Chair a project BY: JAVA VILLANO Our club’s Chair-a-Project Program is one of the many leadership opportunities available for all members, whether you are a first-time member or a returning member! Through the program, members get the chance to lead other volunteers in one of our several continuous service projects through sending a preevent email for attendees, planning transportation, and being the point-person at the event to address any questions or concerns. Chairing a project is a prime opportunity for members to get to know a service project or two at a deeper level, so if you are interested in what goes into coordinating a certain event, try chairing it at least once!

Concessions

BY: SHAIRA SANTOS

Let me start off by saying that I know Concessions seems pretty daunting. The long time commitment coupled with the fact that you would be on your feet all day can be intimidating. But the truth is this: Concessions is one of the best ways to meet and get to know other members of the club. I’ve found that there’s no better way to bond with someone than with free food and hours of making inside jokes. So come out to Concessions and you may just end up being surprised by who you get to know!

FELLOWSHIP

BY: KATHY XIE AND KEITH PACANA

Family System Hello everyone! My name is Kathy Xie and I am your Membership Development Chair this year! That mean I'm here for you, the members. I'm in charge of a few things, the most important thing is to make sure the members are having a good time. How do I reinforce this you may ask? I do so by the family system! The family system is to help members gather in smaller group with a CKI Mom and CKI Dad! Your CKI parents are here to help guide you in the club and out! This is to help you create life long friendships and memories you will never forget.

Mentor& Mentee Trying to navigate the social & academic life of a big school like Berkeley can often be confusing & overwhelming, but never worry, cause CKI's mentor & mentee system has your back covered! Through our mentor mentee system, you will be paired with a mentor based on several aspects such as personality type, major, hobbies, etc. We review your application thoroughly to guarantee that you get a lot from mentor mentee! Mentor mentee is a really great way for you to develop a friendship/mentorship! The Campanile

Kiwanis Family BY: MANNY ILASCO

Strawberry Creek

What is K-Fam? While Circle K is a great organization on its own, the work we do is augmented by our relations with the Kiwanis Family. The Kiwanis Family is comprised of the various service leadership programs sponsored by Kiwanis International, including Key Club and Circle K. In the Berkeley area, Berkeley Kiwanis spo nsors UC Berkeley Circle K, Berkeley High Key Club, and Oakland Technical High School Key Club. Our membership in this family provides us benefits like the opportunity to interact closely with adults of wide ranging occupations, the opportunity to guide those younger than us, and the opportunity to learn from each other.

Kiwanis Service is our monthly service project in which we collaborate with Berkeley Kiwanis to execute various tabletop service projects aimed at benefiting children of all ages like cutting tennis balls for classroom tables and chairs, sewing blankets for premature babies, or sewing PTP dolls for use in pediatric hospitals. In addition to the service we do, we also engage in fellowship by sitting together with the adult Kiwanians, sharing stories and eating a delicious home cooked meal. Overall, this is a great event, since it allows us to engage in service in a relaxed and positive setting, while also allowing the members to interact closely with each other and the Kiwanians. I hope to see some of you there!

Message from the LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR Hello Golden Bears! Welcome back to school, exciting no? In order to truly live to fullest extent this semester, I implore you do three things. First, sleep. While 8 hours is ideal, it’s not quite as realistic as we would hope, and really we are college students who run on caffeine. So let’s compromise, 6 hours, and the leftover two can be for CKI! Second, smile. Who knows who will fall in love with your smile? It will not only make you happy, but others around you too! Third, stay active in CKI. Why, you may ask? Not only do you join a club or friend circle, but a family. Quite literally, there are families whose members you will serve alongside, grow close to, and have late night talks with. So go ahead and experience it for yourself! I look forward to seeing ALL of you, (yes all) this year, and wish you all the best of everything. Much love, Monica

Message from the Kiwanis Advisor Hello Everyone! Welcome to the family! Circle K is an organization with endless opportunities. It is a place where you can be with people who want to make a difference in the community, a place to make life long friends, and a place for you to grow as an individual and a leader. Joining this organization during my undergrad has forever changed my life for the better. It helped me keep my sanity among all of the stresses of college and provided me with countless memories and friends along the way. I know that the same or even better awaits you. I hope you can enjoy this organization as much as I have and truly embrace it for all that it is. You're going to have an amazing time. I can't wait to meet you. Best Regards, Your Kiwanis Advisor Chris

Don't worry about other people and what they're doing, focus on yourself. It's ok to need help, it's ok to not be the best, it's not ok to accept it and stop trying and it's not ok to force yourself to take on more than you can handle.
