Gabby Long

MAJOR: Marketing HOMETOWN: HARRISON, OH As a Student Orientation Leader and Student Ambassador, Gabby has been really involved on our campus. She even served as social media ambassador and helped plan Instagram and Snapchat marketing for recruiting events on campus. This includes being featured in videos, developing ideas for where/how to shoot, and recruiting other students to get involved.

“I can’t really put into words how grateful I am to UC Blue Ash,” says Gabby. “I have absolutely had the best possible experience here.”

In the summer of 2019, Gabby worked as an intern in the marketing department at JTM Food Group where she helped promote healthy eating programs for kids in grades K-12. 2

Financial Aid Checklist

APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID Students interested in applying for financial aid must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The FAFSA is available starting October 1. Because some aid programs are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, an early application receives priority consideration for limited funding sources. List UC’s Title IV Code (003125) when filling out the FAFSA to ensure that UC’s Financial Aid office receives your information. Also remember that applying for financial aid is an annual process.

Complete a FAFSA online at fafsa.ed.gov. UC FAFSA code is 003125. Allow 4-6 weeks for processing.

Once you receive your Student Aid Report (SAR), review for corrections. If none are needed, keep in a file for future use. Once you have been admitted and you receive your SAR, check onestop.uc.edu for your aid status. Once your aid has been accepted, complete loan counseling, and sign promissory notes online by visiting onestop.uc.edu.

CHASING PERFECTION Natalie Pfaltzgraff is driven to perfection. A 4.0 GPA student throughout high school, she has maintained this distinction at UC Blue Ash while participating in the Honors program, taking high-level science courses, and working as a manager at Graeter’s in Loveland. She admits she couldn’t do it alone. “UC Blue Ash has offered me so many opportunities and allowed me to excel in ways I never even imagined. Being a part of the Honors experiences, earning awards and scholarships, and getting to know the professors – these are things I didn’t expect. But I worked really hard and was able to make it happen.” As part of her Honors experience, Natalie works with professor Keen Wilson on a biology research project. “I love the opportunities for research with professors like Dr. Wilson. It’s made me comfortable to reach out to my professors. I don’t know if I would have felt that way at another college.”

MAKING DREAMS POSSIBLE UC Blue Ash alumnus Eric Broyles knows first-hand how transformative our college can be. He graduated at the bottom of his high school class before attending UC Blue Ash – where he thrived under the support of his professors. “They saw more value in me than I saw in myself at that time of my life,” remembers Broyles. While working many jobs to support his educational aspirations, he went on to graduate with honors from UC and earned his law degree from the University of Virginia. Today he is a very successful entrepreneur based in Washington, D.C. Eric created the Eric C. Broyles Student Success Scholarship Fund and in 2018 donated $1 million to the fund – the largest gift in the history of the college. His generous gift expands the number of students we can help in overcoming financial obstacles to their education. Recipients of the Broyles Scholarship must work part-time while attending UC Blue Ash, and preference is given to first-generation minority students with a history of overcoming adversity. Eric advises several young people and makes frequent trips to UC Blue Ash to meet students and share his story.

PASSIONATE PROFESSORS Our professors are experts in the art of teaching. You might be surprised to learn where their passions take them beyond the classroom.

RADIATING PASSION Radiologic technology professor Eric Charlton loves teaching students about their role in the healthcare field. “UC Blue Ash is a special place. I love the interaction with students, the flexibility to research, and collaborating with other faculty.” Outside the classroom, Eric is executive director of AmiriProject, a minority male health initiative, which provides healthy lifestyle awareness and healthcare career education to young African-American males. A SPIRIT OF COMPASSION: “When my family home was affected by a recent tornado, the UCBA community assisted us in various ways as we recovered. It’s a testament to the generosity of this college, that they’re willing to help each other, and students, alike.”

HEART + MIND BALANCE Stacey Benton, DVM, PhD incorporates wellness and self-care practices into her curriculum to help students weather the clinical year of the Veterinary Technology program and enter the profession with tools to protect their mental health. She has been recognized nationally for her work as an academic advisor. “As their academic advisor, I help students with any concerns or struggles they may be facing inside or outside the classroom. As their professor of laboratory procedures, I instill in them the power of simple diagnostic techniques they can perform anywhere, anytime. As a clinical instructor, I introduce them to working with clients in a non-profit veterinary clinic. It is absolutely wonderful to see students grow their skills and truly blossom into confident veterinary technicians.” AN INTERESTING FACT ABOUT DR. BENTON: “At Cornell University, I earned a PhD in Neurobiology and Behavior studying the neuroanatomy of song production in birds. In my house, it’s a compliment to be called a bird brain! “

FOR THE LOVE OF LEARNING From active learning techniques in the classroom to collaborative cancer research in the lab to professional presentations across the country, biology professor Heather Wilkins, PhD, finds new ways to engage her students. “My hope is that I contribute to my students’ positive outlook toward education, I encourage them to keep learning, and I contribute to their confidence on their journey. I feel like, more often than not, they have changed me. Each interaction has influenced the teacher I am today.”

WHAT KEEPS ME GOING: “I love to spend time with my boys around Cincinnati, and I de-stress by running half marathons with my husband.”

BUILDING A LEGACY The Gieske family is building a legacy of UC Blue Ash graduates right in their own home. Nathan and Denise met at the college right before the start of classes in 1991 and started dating soon after. They were engaged by the spring of 1992. Years later, when their children, Nick and Emily, were ready to head to college, the couple wanted the kids to find their own way. “We left it up to them to decide where they wanted to go,” said Nathan. Each considered other schools, but

they both liked UC Blue Ash and found that the college had the academic programs they were interested in. “I really think students going to regional colleges are on the right path,” added Denise. “A smaller college like UC Blue Ash gives you the same education you get at a larger college or university at a much better value.”
