Although your life is a continuous journey, how often are you seeking out opportunities to learn something new? Henry Ford said, “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.” Your whole life is an education and learning opportunities are all around– you simply have to seek it. Whether 2019 is the year you seek to develop your financial strategy, discover your creativity, explore the U.S. west in an RV, or learn to meditate; we hope you look to Communiversity to develop the skills you need to achieve your learning goals. Never stop learning, exploring, growing, or seeking.

An 85-year partnership with the

CINCINNATI OBSERVATORY Communiversity is proud to continue the tradition of partnering with the Observatory and looks forward to celebrating another 175 years!

The Cincinnati Observatory celebrates its 175th year of rich history and connection to the University of Cincinnati. Since the oldest public telescope in the U.S. was placed on Cincinnati’s Mount Lookout hill in 1873, the Cincinnati Observatory has inspired generations to look at the stars and take an interest in the universe around them. Aside from the antiquity of the site, the Observatory’s partnership with UC also dates back generations. UC and the Observatory have partnered to offer for-credit courses since 1933 and, before the Observatory was open to the public, it offered access to the public through Communiversity courses. “The Observatory serviced over 31,000 visitors in 2017, and almost half of these were adults,” Ventre said. “Consequently, our mission and vision dovetails very well with the mission and vision of the UC Communiversity and their adult students.” SEE PAGE 10 FOR ALL ASTRONOMY COURSES OFFERED AT THE CINCINNATI OBSERVATORY Call (513) 556-6932, visit uc.edu/ce/commu or

PAINTING CLASSES

NEW! MONET’S “WEEPING WILLOW”

Instructor: Kevin McCarty Our classes are appropriate for beginners, but also geared to intermediate students who have attended by classes in the past. One gallery-wrapped, stretched 11 x 14” fine art canvas, a set of brushes, and a full set of acrylic paints in a broad spectrum of colors are included in the class fee. Take home your original piece of art ready for framing!

Weeping willows were among Monet’s favorite trees and planted several in his vast compound in Giverny. Monet painted ten weeping willow paintings by 1919, as a mournful response to World War I. Monet’s Weeping Willow lacks straight lines, and the shapes have no definite borders. The colors fade from one image to the next with a wide range of light and dark shades. Learn Monet’s technique of layering of the oils which gives his paintings a raised texture that appears smooth to the eye and discover his use of light to create an uneven feel in the art. Although the painting depicts nature, Monet’s Weeping Willow is more concerned with conveying emotion with his swirling, agitated forms and the obvious contrast between dark and light. Saturday, February 23, 12–4 pm, $89

NEW! A LOOK AT ENGLISH WATERCOLORISTS

NEW! WATERCOLOR PAINTING WORKSHOP: STORM AT THE MOUTH OF THE GRAND CANAL, VENICE Joseph Mallard William Turner was a virtuoso watercolorist who is famous for his expressive colorization and his ability to capture the elusive and volatile atmosphere of nature. He broadly applied atmospheric washes of paint in his paintings. This technique, as well as the intense, evanescent light in his works, placed Turner in the vanguard of English art. Learn about his history, his influence on art in the world today, while practicing colorization and the techniques of Turner’s painting style. The immediacy of the watercolor medium is challenging but well suited to capturing atmospheric effects. With or without painting experience, you can do it!

The late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries saw the emergence of painters who used watercolors to sublime effect. Come to this class to reproduce a few of these paintings, using your innate creativity and learning new skills to create similar art in a more modern context. Learn about the development and changes of watercolor painting during these centuries by exploring paintings by famous artists such as Thomas Girtin, John Constable, and J.M.W. Turner. Learn through discussion, demonstration, hands-on experience, and individual coaching, techniques in watercolor painting, while at the same time experiencing the joy of painting and self-expression. The immediacy of the watercolor medium is challenging but well suited to capturing atmospheric effects. Saturday, March 16, 12–4 pm, $89

Saturday, December 8, 12–4 pm, $85

NEW! REMBRANDT SELF-PORTRAIT AS ZEUXIS LAUGHING One of the most revered artists of all time, Rembrandt is famous for his work, with his greatest creative triumphs being self-portraits, illustrations of biblical scenes and etchings/portraits of his 17thcentury contemporaries. In this class, you will create your own version of Rembrandt’s self-portrait as Zeuxis, a Greek artist who lived in late 5th century BC. Zeuxis reputedly died from excessive laughing when painting an old woman who wanted to look like Aphrodite. However, in this painting, Rembrandt appears to be laughing both at himself and with the viewer. Saturday, January 19, 12–4 pm, $89

ASTRONOMY

STARGAZING 101

The Cincinnati Observatory strives to share the universe and our historic site with all our visitors, and to comply with ADA guidelines, will make all reasonable accommodations to ensure a positive experience when visiting the Observatory. However please note that there are limitations imposed by our architecture, being a National Historic Landmark, and our being a functioning astronomical observatory. The physical act of getting to the telescope’s eyepiece for viewing can also be an issue. The eyepieces on our two main telescopes can be anywhere from 4 feet to over 14 feet above the floor, which typically requires climbing a stepped platform to reach.

Constellations change in the heavens from season to season. In this class you will study the imaginative figures we call constellations. Learn to use a planisphere to find any constellation at any given time and date. If the weather is clear, we will go outside to find many of the brighter constellations; and you will also have the option of looking through the observatory telescope. Instructor: Dean Regas Wednesday, February 27, 7–9 pm, $35

HOW TO USE YOUR TELESCOPE

TOUR OF THE UNIVERSE Explore space from the Earth and beyond! Fly past the moon, the planets, the stars, and galaxies to the edge of what is known. Bring your questions about the Cosmos, and our Observatory Scientist will answer as many as he can. View through the oldest operational telescope in the country, weather permitting. Ad Astra! Instructor: Aaron Eiben Wednesday, March 6, 7–9 pm, $35

BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE OBSERVATORY Look to the heavens through the oldest continuously used telescope in the world; explore the depths of the 1873 observatory including its attic and basement; and learn why President Adams laid the observatory’s original cornerstone in 1843. Hear the fascinating history of the founding of the observatory; investigate how the 19th century astronomers determined time for the city of Cincinnati; discover why the observatory was designated a National Historic Landmark; and find out what is in store for the future. The Moon will be viewed through the telescope following the program, weather permitting. Instructor: John Ventre Wednesday, February 13, 7–9 pm, $35

Do you have a telescope sitting in the closet or over in the corner and you would love to use it if you only knew how? Do the dials and knobs leave you mystified? Intimidated? Which end do you look through? There are all of these various pieces that do what? Perhaps you know how your telescope works (sort of), but you’re not sure what to do with it. You say you can find the Moon, but beyond that, the telescope won’t cooperate. Fear not! The answers are all here. However, much you know or don’t know about YOUR telescope, I guarantee you will leave with enough knowledge to take on your scope, one-on-one, and come out victorious. We start with the sky and end with your eye. Your telescope will forever be your friend (until you get a bigger friend!). Bring your telescope along, cardboard spyglass or Hubble wannabe, and we’ll make this a hands-on learning experience. Instructor: Dave Bosse Wednesday, December 5, 7–9 pm, $35

This course is designed for those who love to take pictures and want to enhance their skills. Today’s digital cameras seem overwhelmingly complex with many buttons and controls. In this course we spend plenty of time discussing camera operation and how to take advantage of the features provided but most importantly we explore what makes a good photograph. Once you have a better idea of how a camera works you can concentrate on what’s in the frame. Subjects such as composition, selective focus, exposure, and lighting combined with a better understanding of camera controls can open a whole new world of image making and are the emphasis of this course. Students should have basic experience taking pictures and have a camera with adjustable controls such as a DSLR although those with advanced point and shoot cameras will also benefit from this course. Most important is a desire to improve your photographic knowledge and image making skills. Class includes a field trip weather permitting.
