#LearnSomethingNew Communiversity at the University of Cincinnati offers convenient and innovative classes designed to boost your career and enrich your life. Classes are noncredit, informal and fun! Online and face-to-face class options.
If you have ever thought about writing a novel, then you’ve probably heard the classic rule, “Show. Don’t Tell.” As a writer, your goal is to show the relationships and feelings of your characters and not just tell what happened. This requires a much deeper connection. In fiction writing, you must take emotional risks with your characters and your story. After all, if you’re not moved by your story, you can’t expect your reader to be. Mastering the basics of writing takes consistent practice, and we have several different opportunities for you to invest in your craft this spring. Learn how curiosity fuels the writing process in The Practice of Writing to Develop Creativity. Forge your characters in Crafting the Novel and, as Raymond Carver urged, “Tell everything on yourself,” in our High-Risk Writing Workshop. If poetry is your preferred form of writing, celebrate your inner strengths in verse during our two new poetry classes, The Weaponization of Words and Storytelling and Writing the Ode. And, any good writer knows that you don’t write and edit the same time. It’s a separate process, and we have a class for that; Editing is for Everyone. As you witness the transformation of life around you this spring, also breathe new life into your creative stories. Janet Staderman, Program Director

One gallery-wrapped, stretched 11 x 14” fine art canvas, a set of brushes, and a full set of acrylic paints in a broad spectrum of colors are included in the class fee. NEW! CELEBRATE THE COMING OF SPRING WITH MONET Created almost entirely out of a variegated range of pinks, greens and blues, this painting is a joyous celebration of the coming of spring and the regeneration of life renewed. There is a sensation of being submerged in blossoms, leaves that are almost specters of light, and the scent and warmth of a spring day. In this class, immerse yourself in Monet’s painting, his kind of poetic reverie that is a step beyond Impressionism into Symbolism. Begin to develop your own expression of symbolism as you paint your own version of Monet’s Le Printemps to take home. Monet was often less interested in capturing a likeness than in studying how unblended dabs of color could suggest the effect of sunlight filtering through leaves. In this class, practice foregoing exact likenesses in your own painting, and use dabs of paint and short brushstrokes as Monet did to suggest light. Saturday, May 4, 12–4 pm, $89
A BEGINNER’S LOOK AT ENGLISH WATERCOLORISTS The late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries saw the emergence of painters who used watercolors to sublime effect. Come to this class to reproduce a few of these paintings, using your innate creativity and learning new skills to create similar art in a more modern context. Learn about the development and changes of watercolor painting during these centuries by exploring paintings by famous artists such as Thomas Girtin, John Constable, and J.M.W. Turner. Learn through discussion, demonstration, hands-on experience, and individual coaching, techniques in watercolor painting, while at the same time experiencing the joy of painting and self-expression. Saturday, March 16, 12–4 pm, $89
NEW! CREATE AN ATMOSPHERIC AND INVITING LANDSCAPE
NEW! BE INSPIRED BY APPLE TREES AND ABSTRACT ART Gustav Klimt’s freely painted Apple Tree, as with all his landscapes, links together hyperrealism, impressionism, post impressionism, and symbolism, evidencing his delight in form, color, and texture for their own sakes. Particularly in his late landscapes, Klimt achieved a unity of conception that brings these works, like the last landscapes of Claude Monet and the symbolism of Van Gogh, to the very forefront of Modernism. In this class, learn how Klimt incorporates the styles of Monet and Van Gogh in his work. Practice painting like Gustav Klimt by developing your expression of symbolism and imagery, pulling it from within your own psyche, and take home a piece of Klimt and yourself melded together. Saturday, June 8, 12–4 pm, $89
Most Americans think of Impressionism in terms of Claude Monet’s work and do not think of Alfred Sisley. Working with Moet and Renoir, Sisley was one of the most crucial figures to create a new style which became known as Impressionism. If Monet’s painting was muscular prose and realism-driven at times, Sisley’s painting was poetic - effervescent and ethereal like a poet. He is known for his striking sensitivity to the subtleties of natural landscapes and for his uncanny ability to capture big, expressive skies. In this class, experience a simplistic, fresh approach to impressionism. The instructor will help you break down the muted tones, wide spectrum of hues, and brushstrokes of Sisley’s rain-laden clouds, reflected trees, the jut of land and calm water. Saturday, April 6, 12–4 pm, $89

ASTRONOMY BINOCULAR ASTRONOMY
The Cincinnati Observatory strives to share the universe and our historic site with all our visitors, and to comply with ADA guidelines, will make all reasonable accommodations to ensure a positive experience when visiting the Observatory. However please note that there are limitations imposed by our architecture, being a National Historic Landmark, and our being a functioning astronomical observatory. The physical act of getting to the telescope’s eyepiece for viewing can also be an issue. The eyepieces on our two main telescopes can be anywhere from 4 feet to over 14 feet above the floor, which typically requires climbing a stepped platform to reach.
Sure, binoculars aren’t exactly the Hubble Space Telescope, but they are actually quite capable astronomical instruments that provide a unique and refreshing view of the Celestial Heavens. In this age or rampant light pollution, binoculars can provide the extra edge necessary to see beyond the few hundred stars (at best) offered by 21st century urban skies to see some of the wonders of skies from decades past. Even common binoculars will reveal the constellations more intimately, the phases of Venus or the moons of Jupiter. There are even dozens of deep sky objects (galaxies, nebulae, and such) visible in expensive binoculars.
BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE OBSERVATORY Look to the heavens through the oldest continuously used telescope in the world; explore the depths of the 1873 observatory including its attic and basement; and learn why President Adams laid the observatory’s original cornerstone in 1843. Hear the fascinating history of the founding of the observatory; investigate how the 19th century astronomers determined time for the city of Cincinnati; discover why the observatory was designated a National Historic Landmark; and find out what is in store for the future. The Moon will be viewed through the telescope following the program, weather permitting. Instructor: John Ventre Tuesday, May 14, 7–9 pm, $35
NEW! THE CINCINNATI OBSERVATORY – FROM ATTIC TO CELLAR Dating back to the 1840’s, the Cincinnati Observatory is one of the oldest astronomical observatories in the country. As such, it is a treasure-trove of telescopes and related scientific instruments, apparatus, hand-written records, and publications. Here is your rare opportunity to experience, in person, antique telescopes, exquisite clocks, sundials, quadrants, astrolabes, chronographs, and on and on, and learn how they were used throughout the decades and centuries. Instructor: R.A. Davis, Ph.D. and John Venture
Instructor: Dave Bosse Wednesday, May 29, 7–9 pm, $35
HOW TO USE YOUR TELESCOPE Do you have a telescope sitting in the closet or over in the corner and you would love to use it if you only knew how? Do the dials and knobs leave you mystified? Intimidated? Which end do you look through? There are all of these various pieces that do what? Perhaps you know how your telescope works (sort of), but you’re not sure what to do with it. You say you can find the Moon, but beyond that, the telescope won’t cooperate. Fear not! The answers are all here. However, much you know or don’t know about YOUR telescope, I guarantee you will leave with enough knowledge to take on your scope, one-on-one, and come out victorious. We start with the sky and end with your eye. Your telescope will forever be your friend (until you get a bigger friend!). Bring your telescope along, cardboard spyglass or Hubble wannabe, and we’ll make this a hands-on learning experience. Instructor: Dave Bosse Tuesday, June 4, 7–9 pm, $35
Instructor bios available online at communiversity.uc.edu
Monday, May 20, 7–9 pm, $35
Your Opinion REALLY Matters After each class, we ask that you complete a course evaluation or email your suggestions to us because we want to hear from you! Last year, after attending one of our astronomy classes, a student emailed us about an idea for a new course: How to Use Your Telescope. We talked with our instructor and voilà this class was developed! You know what you like better than anyone – so give us your feedback and suggestions for new courses. And, if you know someone who has a passion for sharing their talents with others, encourage them to teach a class for Communiversity! DID YOU KNOW? Our How to Use Your Telescope class was created because of a student suggestion.

TEST PREPARATION ACT PREPARATION
LSAT PREPARATION
Losing sleep and getting anxious about test day? In this intensive class, you’ll build confidence and make the most of your potential by studying strategies for taking the ACT and by reviewing topics covered by the ACT (math, writing and reading comprehension). Learn a variety of test taking methods and work with the instructor to adapt the ones that best suit your own unique style and personal strengths. You’ll get support for questions and concerns; plus discussions, PowerPoints, use of TPR materials, and lots of concrete examples. Discover approaches to increase your odds on each question type, how to use a process of elimination, construct a well-defined essay (optional) on this test, plan your critical reading passage strategy, and learn when it’s good to guess.
The key to success on the Law School Admission Test is practice, strategy, and timing. Delve into a detailed analysis of each LSAT problem type: reading comprehension, analytical reasoning, and logical reasoning. By discussing the problems and explanations, you’ll develop the ability to approach the LSAT as a series of intellectual games to which you can apply strategies studied in class. You will also benefit from the instructor’s critique of your LSAT writing samples. The course culminates in a full-length mock exam. Using actual questions from previous tests, under timed conditions, will prepare you for the real environment. In addition, and outside of classroom hours, the instructor offers individualized assistance with the personal statement essay required for all law school applications.
Choose one of the following sessions: Sundays, March 17–March 31, 3 weeks, 4–7 pm, $199 Sundays, May 19–June 2, 3 weeks, 4–7 pm, $199 Plus required text (refer to online course description) Instructor: Emily Aleshire Mulvey
PSAT/SAT PREPARATION Gain confidence and make the most of your potential by studying strategies for taking the SAT and by reviewing topics covered by the SAT. You will learn specific techniques for taking the math, writing and reading comprehension parts of the test. Discover how the test is structured, effective methods for solving each problem type, and what to expect. Acquire an arsenal of tools to help you succeed, including how to use a process of elimination, construct a well-defined essay on test day, plan your critical reading passage strategy, and decide how to handle the conundrum “to guess or not to guess.” This class is also beneficial for Juniors who are taking the PSAT in the Fall and are trying to earn National Merit status. The test material is exactly the same (PSAT is simply not as long). Instructor: Emily Aleshire Mulvey
