The UCI Samueli School of Engineering inspires ingenuity, creates opportunities and unleashes innovation to solve society’s most pressing problems. We bring together faculty and students from six academic departments – biomedical, chemical and biomolecular, civil and environmental, electrical and computer science, materials science and engineering, and mechanical and

Despite its relative youth, the UCI Samueli School of Engineering has already distinguished itself as one of the most dynamic institutions in the world. Southern California has always been a center of creativity, and our bright and talented engineering faculty are no different – they are leaders in their disciplines and have achieved worldwide recognition for their research

We develop partnerships with local, state, national and international collaborators from both private and public sectors. These relationships enrich the student learning experience and empower scholars to undertake holistic research with far-reaching impact. Our external alliances also form bridges with the community. The school manages various outreach activities, from teacher training and a variety of K-12 programs to a collaboration with local community colleges. Popular summer
camps emphasize critical thinking, communication and hands-on learning, and introduce middle school children to enabling technologies such as 3D printing. Through these efforts, we are increasing enthusiasm and interest in STEM majors, thereby ensuring the next generation of problem solvers and a qualified workforce. We are committed to enhancing the diversity of our school’s population to reflect California’s demographic trends by increasing both underrepresented minorities and women.

STUDENT INNOVATION INITIATIVE The Samueli School’s emphasis on experiential learning is attracting high-achieving students who want more than a classroom experience. By coupling engineering science-based training with a tactical understanding of how to solve real problems, we produce better engineers. That is why new programs, spaces and opportunities devoted to student projects are integral to our continued success. The Student Innovation Initiative will not only include cutting-edge projects, but also provide a space for hands-on learning opportunities. Through a design/build/test team experience, our students gain strong soft skills, which are the interpersonal attributes they need to succeed in the workplace. Goal: $30 Million

EXCEPTIONAL SCHOLARS The named faculty chair or professorship is a high mark of academic distinction; endowed chairs are vanguards of research and education. Endowing a chair honors and recognizes exceptional scholars. It enables the school to attract or retain gifted individuals whose teaching and research exemplify our mission. These endowments generate funds for salaries, plus an annual scholarly allowance for the appointee, supporting research, teaching and graduate students.
