Racial/ethnic change in the city Irvine is a relatively diverse city, and has experienced notable racial/ethnic change over its history. This is demonstrated quite vividly in Figure 6.10, which shows the percent white in Irvine neighborhoods over this time period. Whereas the city neighborhoods were primarily white (with greater than 85% white residents) up until 1980, this has consistently been changing since then. By 1990 there were several neighborhoods with less than 85% white residents, and a few scattered neighborhoods with less than 70% white residents. By 2000 this pattern became quite pronounced. This trajectory has continued in the more recent years, and the number of neighborhoods with less than 30% white residents (the yellow areas) have continued to increase. The presence of neighborhoods with at least 85% white residents has almost entirely disappeared.
