Bruin strangers become friends over Dinner for 12 Strangers in Beijing.
From Los Angeles to Beijing
by Cia Ford ’08 and Lily Tsau ’81
Dinners For 12 Strangers… Reaching Across the Globe Dinners for 12 Strangers has been one of UCLA’s best-loved traditions. But in 2010, UCLA alumni improved on the tradition. The call went out seeking alumni from across the country and around the world, and Bruins volunteered in record numbers to host UCLA alumni, students and faculty for a meal. An astounding 3,000 Bruins took part in approximately 292 dinners in restaurants and private homes in 31 states and seven countries. That’s almost three times more dinners in 2010 than in 2009.
two days later. Susie Dvoskin ’69 hosted five Bruins who say that otherwise they would have never had the opportunity to meet. They traveled from all over Israel and from Jordan. Guest Rich Fromer M.B.A. ’99 described his “colorful” border crossing with guards who were very suspicious of his story about going to a UCLA dinner with people he didn’t know and staying overnight with someone he’d never met. “Dinners for 12 Strangers is the perfect example of tapping into your network and using your UCLA advantage,” says Angela Scales ’03, associate director, outreach and engagement, who coordinates the
Alumni reported amazing stories of new friendships from around the globe. Host Julie Chiu ’94 continued on next page from Beijing writes that Bruin “Steve Connell is a slam poet and was in Beijing for a literary festival. I was volunteer“An astounding 3,000 Bruins took part in ing for the festival and was Steve’s approximately 292 dinners in restaurants host.” At the dinner, he met school librarian Rina Tamayo ’84, M.L.S. and private homes in 31 states and seven ’86. From its infancy, the UCLA Alumni Association has given alumni cutting-edge access to the most contemporary forms of communication and opportunities to connect. This winter, the Association will launch BruinWorks, an online networking space designed exclusively for alumni. This exciting new suite of professional and social networking tools will revolutionize the way you interact with fellow Bruins and UCLA, affording unprecedented access and control over your online Bruin experience. BruinWorks opportunities include: Professional Networking – Find alumni across professions; give and receive career advice; search and list job opportunities; post and seek résumés; and find and promote Bruin businesses. Staying Connected – Create a user profile; find alumni by area and interest; form and join groups; find and update information; read and record life changes; and network by school. Beta users currently are testing BruinWorks to make sure it is ready for you, and a select group of Alumni Association members are participating in the prelaunch. While the site development has been led by the Association, alumni will drive the content and user experience. For a sneak peek, visit www.BruinWorks.com. Look for more information closer to the official launch, currently slated for January.

Top Three Misconceptions about Alumni Membership UCLA Alumni membership is a valuable asset, but some alumni aren’t sure how to make it work for them. Here are the top three questions about membership. For more information, visit www.UCLAlumni.net/ Benefits.
1. Bruin Home Games — “There are no athletics benefits.” Members can attend UCLA home sports events for free (except men’s basketball and football), and they receive 20% off on BearWear to show their Bruin pride. 2. Travel Benefits — “I like to travel, but Alumni Association membership does not offer me any related benefits.” Members are eligible for special rates at Club Quarters in 14 major U.S. cities and abroad, as well as discounts at Hotel Angeleno and the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Life members enjoy additional benefits, including special rates at all Starwood Hotels. 3. Library Access — “If I don’t live in Westwood, I can’t benefit from the library privileges.” Members can get free library cards at any UC System library as well as access to ProQuest, the online journal database.
