“UCLA is the only place in the world that could support a person like me, my international interests, my interests in diversity of American culture, and my interests in performing arts. These are things that don’t converge much in higher education.” – Judy Mitoma ’70, M.A. ’75

Powering your personal, professional and intellectual growth

Tell the World Why UCLA Matters to You Did you know that California gives UCLA less than half as much money per student as it did 20 years ago? As one prominent UCLA advocate says, “If you think excellence costs too much, wait ‘til you get the bill for mediocrity.” In the face of two decades of budget cuts, UCLA has launched IOUCLA.org, a campaign aimed at getting people to speak up about UCLA, higher education and the benefits to Californians.

The site includes a variety of messages, including video and written stories from alumni who attended UCLA Alumni Day, and a message from legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar ’69. Go to IOUCLA.org/yourstories/ to add your voice. Then, write a tweet or update in your Twitter and Facebook accounts with something like:

Life-saving inventions, economic engine, great education. How does UCLA benefit your life? Share your story at IOUCLA.org. I did. Become a part of the groundswell of voices speaking up for UCLA during this critical time for California.

Another special feature of BruinWorks is the Career Connections feature, which enables both peer-to-peer and student-to-alumni networking. “Say you want to know who works at Northrop, at Google, or in government downtown,” Amos says. “Users of the site will be able to find other Bruins in a broad range of interests who work in similar fields.” Dillon just calls the Career Connections feature “very, very cool. It’s really going to be one of the drivers of the viral success of this space.” Interest in this service is so high among the Bruin nation that there were some 700 entries in a contest to choose the name BruinWorks. Says Amos, “This new ability to exchange info about work and life in a dynamic way and think synergistically is going to make the alumni more engaged – and the university stronger.”
