JAPAN

Your Journey unfolds

Japan seemingly is a land of contradictions. But the cutting-edge fashion and innovative technology synonymous with modern Japan complement, rather than compete with, centuries-old traditions. Daily life is so imbued with the ways of the past that the “old” has no fear of being replaced by the “new.” Your journey begins in Kyoto, the heart and soul of Japan since the Heian period (794-1185). This era

Days 1 ~ 5 Beauty and tranquility

gave birth to the styles of painting, poetry and other arts that we see as quintessentially Japanese. This ancient capital is the ideal place to begin your exclusive journey and whet your appetite for the wondrous days to come. You will be welcomed on this global adventure at a kaiseki dinner. This formal, multicourse affair celebrates seasonal food, a hallmark of Japanese cuisine. A graceful geisha will entertain you

with traditional music and dance, a cultural luxury rarely experienced by visitors. The famed bullet train whisks you to Tokyo before you leave Japan. Keep an eye out for a view of Mount Fuji en route! Above left: Girl in Kyoto Above top: Golden Pavilion, Kyoto Above right: Garden statue, Kyoto

CHINA

“Seeing it once is better than being told 100 times.” ~ Zhou Chongguo, Han Dynasty general, c. 49-74 B.C.

Beijing, capital of the Middle Kingdom is a fascinating mix of ancient and new. In Tiananmen Square, the largest plaza in the world, the tinny music of bicycle bells compete with the polyphonic chorus of cell phone tones. Watch locals fill the sky with their traditional, colorful kites.

You’ll marvel at the Great Wall, a spectacle that must be seen to be appreciated. Rub elbows with locals during a visit to a restaurant specializing in jiaozi, dumplings boiled in the northern Chinese style. You will also enjoy Peking Duck, a fitting meal during your stay in Beijing. This worldfamous dish originated

centuries ago, and the painstaking preparation once meant that it was fit to be served only to the royal court. Once you try it, you’ll understand why it was an imperial favorite! Above: Beijing opera performer Below: Temple of Heaven

Look north and anticipate your visit to the Forbidden City, where emperors ruled from within the vermilion walls. It is said that 1 million laborers toiled to build this grand palace and its surrounding buildings. Compare these beautiful historic buildings with the modern architecture of the Bird’s Nest and the other venues built for the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Days 6 ~ 9 Culture and harmony

THAILAND

...behold te mystery Bangkok, founded in the late 18th century, is a young metropolis saturated with tradition. The wats, with their gilded, intricately designed spires, are an integral part of the cityscape and daily life. The majority of the people are devout Buddhists. Many people raise their hands, palms pressed together, and bow their heads in a traditional wai greeting as they pass saffronrobed monks and the city’s many wats.

The Thai are gracious, modest and renowned for their hospitality. Ostentation is reserved for their temples and other public buildings. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, home of Thailand’s most revered image of Buddha, is an opulent example of the Thai devotion to Buddha. The

statue, actually carved of jade, wears seasonal garments that glitter with gold and jewels. Bangkok’s klong, canals, buzz with activity. Explore the city by water before enjoying dinner and a performance of elegant classical Thai dance at the renowned Sala Rim Naam restaurant. In Ayutthaya, explore the vestiges of an ancient capital, where grandeur can still be seen among the ruins.

Days 9 ~ 11 Temples and tradition

DUBAI Left: The Palm Jumeirah is one of three man-made, palm-shaped islands off the coast of Dubai. Below: Local man and his camel

Four thousand years ago, fishing villages occupied the sites now claimed by skyscrapers and designer shops. But modern Dubai built itself upon its 19thcentury pearl trade to become the commercial capital and shopping mecca of the United Arab Emirates. Dubai’s glitzy reputation has only been bolstered by its famed man-made islands. The Palm and The World islands showcase the ingenuity of new Dubai, but behind the flash is a bevy of cultural treasures. The Jumeirah Mosque, modern but built in the medieval style, is one of only a handful of mosques in the Arab world that allow non-Muslim guests. Bastakiya, a traditional neighborhood where homes with courtyards line narrow streets and wind towers punctuate the sky, is a picture of old Dubai!

Days 12 ~ 15 Mosques and marvels

EGYPT

...marvel at te wonders

The Sphinx and Great Pyramid, Giza

No place captures the romance of archaeology more than Egypt. Here, every day has the potential for a new chapter of history to unfold. Many of Egypt’s antiquities are preserved in Cairo’s world-class museums. The Solar Boat Museum, next to the Great Pyramid at Giza, houses the great reed boats that were thought to carry the pharoah Khufu and his possessions to the pyramid. Fly to Luxor for a day of exploring the archaeological wonders of the Valley of the Kings. Cairo, too, has many stories to tell. They are hidden in the mazes of narrow lanes that form the souks, the lively markets that are the centerpiece of daily life.

Days 15 ~ 18 Antiquity and legend

Discover the city’s sizeable Coptic Christian community. St. Sergius Church, as the story goes, is built on the spot where Mary, Joseph and Jesus rested after fleeing to Egypt. See Ben Ezra Synagogue, a former Coptic church that was converted to a Jewish temple in the ninth century. Today, Egypt’s Jewish population is small, but the traditions hold strong.

The Egyptian Museum, particularly its Mummy Room, is a spectacular showcase of ancient artifacts that reveal the country’s great history. Mask of Tutankhamen, Egyptian Museum, Cairo

JORDAN Petra is an architectural treasure, a gem created by ingenious minds and skilled craftsmen who saw promise in the richly hued veins of a sandstone valley. More than 2,000 years ago, Petra flourished as a stop on a spice route. The opening of other trade routes led to the city’s decline. During the Crusades, Christian armies used the city as a base. Sometime after that, the world seemingly forgot about Petra until a Swiss explorer stumbled upon it in 1812. Admire Umayyad and Byzantine mosaics, some of the most elaborate in the world, in Madaba. On Mount Nebo, stand where Moses beheld a view of the Promised Land before he died. On a clear day, you may even see Jerusalem. Above: Treasury, Petra Left: Old City, Jerusalem

ISRAEL Jerusalem is one of the world’s most fascinating cities. Enjoy the café culture of West Jerusalem. The Old City, brimming with sites that are important to Jews, Muslims and Christians, is encircled by a wall built by Suleiman the Magnificent in the 1530s.

East of the Old City are Arab neighborhoods that are rich with history. The bustling Machane Yehuda market, known locally as the shuk, offers a glimpse of daily life. Yad Vashem Museum offers a somber tribute to the victims of the Holocaust. Outside the city, discover the history of Masada, the

fortress that became a symbol of the kingdom of Israel after a valiant stand against the Roman army. Visit the Dead Sea, where the water’s high saline content makes floating easy. Enjoy the beach or treat yourself to a mineralfilled spa treatment at this popular destination.

Days 19 ~ 22 History and treasures

GERMANY

...savor te pleasures

Castles sit like sentries on each bank of the Rhine River and overlook the valley’s medieval villages and steeply terraced vineyards. Often called the Romantic Rhine, this river and its valley are synonymous with the Romantic movement, which in Germany was influenced by not only nature, but a fascination with the Middle Ages. Bacharach is one of many medieval towns along the river, but it is unusual for its well-preserved wall. Admire the river and scenery from

Days 23 ~ 26 Romance and ruins

atop the 14th-century battlements. Boppard, another gem, features the remains of a fourth-century Roman fort. Venture to Heidelberg, a beautiful city on the Neckar River. The city is home to Germany’s oldest university. Visit the castle, which towers over the city and offers a fabulous view. Your journey around the world concludes in beautiful Germany. Share your stories

and favorite memories during a special Farewell Dinner at your castle hotel. Enjoy Erntedankfest, a celebration of the harvest. This seasonal festivity, which features local wines and regional specialties, will be held in the opulent saal of your hotel.
