India offers remarkable perspectives on where the modern world intersects with life as it has been lived for millennia. Itinerary includes the capital Delhi; the charming blue city of Jodhpur; the 15th century Jain temple at Ranakpur with exquisite marble carvings; romantic Udaipur with its lakes and palaces; Deogarh Mahal, a charming country home; a unique village safari; colorful and vibrant Pushkar Camel Fair; the rose pink city of Jaipur; and finally, the Taj Mahal, a poem in marble, built by Emperor Shah Jehan in an act of love.

Tuesday, Nov. 09- USA/Delhi. Depart Los Angeles for New Delhi, India. Wednesday, Nov. 10 - Arrive Delhi. Arrive late this evening. Eight successive cities were built by various rulers in and around present day Delhi. TAJ PALACE Thursday, Nov. 11 - Delhi. Tour New Delhi this morning, visiting the Humayun’s Tomb, known as the first example of the Mughal imperial architecture. Visit 800 year old Qutab Minar, 234 foot high sandstone tower. Drive past the government buildings and presidents house along the majestic Rajpath, visit a Temple of the Sikhs. Also visit the Red Fort and Chandni Chowk (old shopping street). Later we also will visit Raj Ghat, memorial of Mahatma Gandhi. In the evening enjoy a lecture on ancient Indian architecture by our expert study leader followed by a welcome reception. The 15th century city of Jodhpur, with its blend of modern and traditional buildings, stands at the edge of the Thar Desert. We will visit the Meherangarh Fort and Jaswant Thada. Visit the Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum exhibiting the priceless collection of the royal family of Jodhpur. Later visit the downtown Clock Tower Market. Enjoy a demonstration on hand painting - the art of ‘Mehndi’ with natural ‘Henna’ powders. (B, D) TAJ HARI MAHAL Saturday, Nov. 13- Jodhpur/Udaipur. Journey to Udaipur, visiting en route the amazing Jain temples of Ranakpur – a tour highlight will be meeting with the priest. Pushkar Camel Fair is perhaps the largest camel and cattle fair in the world. Almost half a million people in colorful clothes flock to Pushkar for several days, bringing with them thousands of camels, horses, goats and cattle to buy and sell. The villagers enjoy camel races, camel decorating contests and play a version of camel musical chairs. Witness the festivities, visit a camel trading center and enjoy a camel or camel cart ride. Enjoy dinner with folk entertainment. (B, L, D) ROYAL TENTED CAMP Wednesday, Nov. 17 - Pushkar/Jaipur. Morning take a final look at the festivities then continue on your drive to Jaipur. The rose- pink capital of Rajasthan, Jaipur is surrounded on all sides by rugged hills. Later, experience the flavors of Indian cinema at a local movie hall for a short Bollywood movie. Drive to Agra, visiting en route Fatehpur Sikri, the once fabled Moghul capital. The earliest reference to Agra is in the epic ‘The Mahabharat’. Ptolemy, Alexander the Great’s geographer also called it Agra. It was, however, in the medieval period that Agra earned prominence as a capital city under the Mughals. (B, L) ITC MUGHAL Saturday, Nov. 20 – Agra. This morning, enjoy an extended visit to the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort. Sample the arts of this region with visits to two private collectors in the afternoon. Later we will visit an orphanage to meet the children and teachers.
