At the Charles Darwin Research Center, you will be able to learn about the monumental efforts of the scientists, guides, rangers, and park managers who help to preserve and protect the islands and their inhabitants for future generations.

Because the human presence in the Galapagos Islands is still relatively minimal, many of the animals are remarkably unafraid of visitors. You will have extraordinary opportunities to observe and photograph them at very close range.

UCLA Alumni Association & Orbridge present:

The Galapagos Islands “The archipelago is a little world within itself, or rather a satellite attached to America, whence it has derived a few stray colonists, and has received the general character of its indigenous productions. Considering the small size of the islands, we feel the more astonished at the number of their aboriginal beings, and at their confined range. Seeing every height crowned with its crater, and the boundaries of most of the lava-streams still distinct, we are led to believe that within a period geologically recent the unbroken ocean was here spread out. Hence, both in space and time, we seem to be brought somewhat near to that great fact — that mystery of mysteries — the first appearance of new beings on this earth.” – Charles Darwin, The Voyage of the Beagle

ravel from the natural wonders of the Galapagos Islands to the mist-shrouded mountain citadel of the Incas. So remote and inaccessible that it was left untouched by the Spanish conquistadors, Machu Picchu was unknown to the outside world until Hiram Bingham rediscovered it in 1911. But there is much more to see in the

Peruvian highlands, and you will have a chance to explore other areas in the famous city of Cusco and in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Visit the Pisaq Market, ride the train through the Urubamba valley, marvel at the massive stone stairs at Ollantaytambo, and break bread in the home of an affluent Peruvian outside of Cusco.

Your Orbridge Expedition Leader Greg GreeR Orbridge Senior Naturalist

G

reg’s love for wildlife began at the tender age of 4, when he caught his first snake, a California kingsnake, behind his childhood home. His wide ranging expertise in the natural world comes from his life-long passion for, and understanding of, the creatures with which we share this planet. A talented and enthusiastic all-around naturalist, his past travels have taken him from Antarctica to Zambia and many other destinations in between, including the Amazon, the Galapagos Islands, the Florida Everglades and Alaska. Before joining Orbridge, Greg spent over a decade as a naturalist for an international

travel company. He also served as the Executive Director of the Chattahoochee Nature Center (an environmental education facility in Roswell, Georgia), where he developed their first international eco-travel program. In addition, he has worked with the peregrine falcon re-introduction program in Virginia and continues research with reptiles and amphibians in Georgia. Through the past 35 years, Greg has given hundreds of lectures and presentations of natural history programs to a wide variety of audiences. He has also published numerous articles in Bird Watcher’s Digest, Georgia Wildlife, Reptile and Amphibian, Fernbank Quarterly and is a species account contributor to the new comprehensive guide, Amphibians and Reptiles of Georgia, published by the University of Georgia Press (2008).
