The Safari Experience

CAPE TOWN Sheltered beneath massive Table Mountain on a narrow peninsula that curls southward to the sea, the Mother City of Africa is one of the most beautiful destinations on earth. Elegant Cape Town is a feast for the senses. Centuries-old Cape Dutch houses, storied landmarks and enchanted gardens dot the cityscape. Among the city’s countless highlights, the colorful Victoria & Alfred Waterfront welcomes visitors with hundreds of inviting boutiques and cafés set amid workaday harbor life. To the south, the Atlantic seaboard gives way to a spectacular coastline, powdery beaches, seaside villages and an array of exotic wildlife within easy reach of the city.

In the not-so-distant past, a safari was synonymous with hunters stalking herds of big game that roamed the African plains. Today, most hunters are armed with cameras instead of guns. Their trophies? Images of the Africa’s incomparable wildlife. Each day unfolds with discoveries of nature’s grandeur on the wild continent. Awaken to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee as your expert driver prepares his vehicle for your early morning game drive. Set off in pursuit of exotic animals and birds in their natural habitat and see the drama of their day-to-day struggle for survival.

Rovos Rail

Return to the lodge for a hearty English breakfast and share your morning encounters with fellow travelers. After lunch, there is time to take a dip in the pool or treat yourself to a massage at the spa. Tea is served before your afternoon game drive. As the sun completes its sojourn across the sky, return to the lodge for a relaxing evening. After a dinner of delicious Continental and local cuisine, gather around the fireplace to trade tales and tally your Big Five sightings. By day’s end, you’ll have collected many photographs and thrilling memories of your very own safari.

THE BIG FIVE Nineteenth-century big-game hunters coined the phrase, The Big Five. The term refers to the most dangerous animals to track on foot and which, therefore, are the most prized trophies. They are the lion, elephant, cape buffalo, rhinoceros and leopard. These magnificent creatures are still the most desired animals to stalk while on safari, but, nowadays, with a zoom lens mounted on a digital camera!

In Johannesburg, visit the stirring Apartheid Museum and experience the sense of community that unites Soweto. Robben Island has come to symbolize the triumph of the human spirit. This remarkable outpost has served as a whaling station, a leper colony, a military base and, most infamously, the political prison that housed Nelson Mandela and other freedom fighters. Today, former prisoners guide visitors with an insider’s view of Africa’s Alcatraz where, despite inhumane conditions, prisoners were able to organize political debates, educational programs and sporting events and become the international focus of the fight against apartheid.

UNESCO Robben Island (1999) and the Cape Floral Region Protected Areas (2004) are UNESCO World Heritage List sites featured in this comprehensive program. These sites are distinguished due to universal scenic, historic, artistic or scientific value.

The Cape of Good Hope, where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet, is a captivating place of awe-inspiring scenery, fantastic walks, deserted beaches and rare wildlife. The Cape Floral Kingdom is renowned for an abundance of biodiversity that encompasses the natural wonders of Table Mountain National Park. This area, representing less than 0.5% of Africa, is home to nearly 20% of the continent’s flora. Explore the length of Cape Peninsula and marvel at some of the 2,285 species of plant life, a spectacular display that far exceeds that in the British Isles (1,492) and New Zealand (1,996). At Cape Point, ascend one of the world’s highest sea cliffs by funicular to admire stunning panoramic coastal views. In Simonstown, see more than 2,000 protected African penguins at Boulders Beach from boardwalks that wind among their nests.

This two-night trek across South Africa recalls an era when a rail journey was an event, not just a means of transportation. This sophisticated cross-country jaunt introduces you to the varied South African landscape during the 994-mile journey from Cape Town in the southwestern tip of the country to Pretoria in the northeastern corner. Rovos Rail offers the rare experience of luxury travel in vintage carriages, all of which have been refurbished and impeccably appointed for your comfort. The décor, late Victorian and Edwardian, is a nod to the heyday of refined train travel. Spend your days in the observation car or mingle with your fellow travelers in the lounge. To complete your experience, you can expect attentive service and even a little bit of formality at dinner as passengers dress for the occasion. You’ll enjoy fine cuisine; menus emphasize fresh, local ingredients and regional specialties. Each morning, you will relish a sumptuous breakfast buffet as well as dishes cooked to order. Three-course lunches and dinners include a selection of excellent South African wines. Air-conditioned suites feature a sitting area, minibar (stocked with the beverages of your choice), personal safe and full bathroom with shower and hair dryer. Room service also is available at any hour.

Day 1—Matjiesfontein This morning, your train leaves from Cape Town. Leave behind the mountains and the verdant vineyards of the Western Cape as you make your way to the Karoo, the semidesert plateau that encompasses much of South Africa’s interior. Early this evening, arrive at Matjiesfontein, a turn-of-thecentury spa town. It was founded by James D. Logan, an Englishman who re-created a bit of London in the village by importing street lights and building a Victorian-style hotel. Explore the town on a guided tour before resuming your journey. Day 2—Kimberley This morning, awake to the scenery of the Northern Cape province. Arrive in Kimberley in the afternoon and set out on a guided tour. The 1866 discovery of a diamond on a farm near Hopetown set off South Africa’s great diamond rush. See the Big Hole, the former diamond mine that once was thought to be the largest hole excavated by hand. rush, for better or worse, led to a population explosion and the development of the city that would become the country’s financial center. Today, skyscrapers have replaced miners’ shacks in the vibrant City of Gold, and many of the poor neighborhoods are being revitalized. Through its tempestuous history, Joburg has

retained its spirit. If tranquil Cape Town is the country’s oldest and most cultured city, Johannesburg is its rambunctious little brother. The suburb of Westcliff, the peaceful environs of your hotel, is distinguished by romantic Edwardian mansions and the city’s Zoological Gardens.

SOWETO An acronym for South Western Township, Soweto is a living symbol of the energy and spirit that helped end apartheid. One hundred years after it was founded to house black mine workers away from the center of Johannesburg, Soweto is a study in contrasts. BMW dealerships and tidy row houses sit side by side with squatter camps and tin shacks. Despite its tragic history, Soweto leads a trendsetting cultural scene. Vilakazi Street is famous for its two former residents: Nobel Peace Prize winners Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Other important sites include the stirring Apartheid Museum and the Hector Pieterson Memorial, erected in memory of the 1976 student protest that captured the world’s attention.

Mural of Nelson Mandela in Soweto

Nelson Mandela: From Prisoner to President Nelson Mandela was a successful lawyer when he joined the African National Congress in 1952. A decade later, the ANC was banned and Mandela was sentenced to life in prison. During his 27 years as a political prisoner, he refused to compromise his beliefs to gain freedom and became a potent anti-apartheid symbol. Freed in 1990, Mandela negotiated the end of apartheid, was awarded half of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and became the first black president of South Africa.

If you’ve ever imagined seeing a pride of lions lazing in the sun, a lone cheetah scouting for prey from atop a rock or a herd of graceful impalas bounding across grassland, then Thornybush Private Game Reserve is a dream come true. Located near world-renowned Kruger National Park, the reserve offers incredible wildlife encounters in the heart of the Valley of the Olifants, the most game-rich area in the country. Kruger and other nearby game reserves are fenceless, so animals are free to roam, giving you plentiful opportunities to see many of the reserves’ wild residents. During each safari adventure, scan for the famous Big Five and the 152 other mammal species—and the 507 bird species, the 114 reptile species and more!—that reside within 28,417 acres of lowveld as knowledgeable, seasoned driver-guides share their knowledge of the flora and fauna. MOUNT NELSON HOTEL Cape Town

Nestled at the foot of majestic Table Mountain, the award-winning Mount Nelson Hotel offers unparalleled tradition, luxury and service. Rated among “the world’s best hotels” by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine in 2004, the elegant Nellie is set amid nine acres of welltended gardens. It features a host of amenities including beautifully appointed English-style rooms, heated pools, floodlit tennis courts, guided “garden walks” and popular afternoon tea. For more than a century, this world-class grande dame has played host to celebrities and statesmen—including Winston Churchill and the Prince of Wales—and continues to welcome international travelers with incomparable style.

WESTCLIFF HOTEL Johannesburg

Cascading from a hillside in cosmopolitan Johannesburg, the award-winning Westcliff is the city's most glamorous retreat. Readers of Travel + Leisure magazine rated it among the top hotels in the world in a 2008 survey. Guests at this glorious gem enjoy understated elegance, a holistic spa, palatial marble baths and individually furnished guest rooms decorated by South Africa's premier designer, Graham Viney.

If you’ve ever imagined seeing a pride of lions lazing in the sun, a lone cheetah scouting for prey from atop a rock or a herd of graceful impalas bounding across grassland, then Thornybush Private Game Reserve is a dream come true.

They are the lion, elephant, cape buffalo, rhinoceros and leopard.

One hundred years after it was founded to house black mine workers away from the center of Johannesburg, Soweto is a study in contrasts. YOUR LUXURIOUS ACCOMMODATIONS

Thornybush Main Lodge

Day 3—Pretoria After a late-morning arrival in Pretoria, transfer by deluxe motorcoach to the Westcliff Hotel.

rush, for better or worse, led to a population explosion and the development of the city that would become the country’s financial center.
