Discover a breadth of scenic beauty that spans from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Cape Horn, Chile, as you learn about the unique culture and geography of the continent. Cruise the waterways of southern Patagonia and experience the magic of its glittering glaciers, lush forests and fascinating marine wildlife. This adventure encompasses a perfectly balanced variety of encounters with cosmopolitan delights and natural environs.

Buenos Aires argentina A sprawling metropolis in perpetual motion, Buenos Aires pulsates with a passionate Latin spirit and creative energy. Its broad boulevards lined with upscale boutiques, cafés, plazas and quaint museums will remind you of a stylish European capital. To get a sense of the city’s soul, step into a tango hall and watch couples put on masterful displays of the highly charged and deeply revered dance. An eventful history is represented by the Casa Rosada. In 1951, Eva Perón, the popular first lady of Argentina, emboldened the working class with heartfelt speeches from the balcony of this rose-hued presidential estate. A walk through the Recoleta Cemetery reveal Evita’s final resting place among the nation’s most important figures.

Sapphire lakes, snowcapped volcanoes and verdant forests are the star attractions of Los Lagos, Chile’s Lake District. Lakes Llanquihue and Todos los Santos, which flank Volcán Osorno, are two of the most scenic lakes. A particularly beautiful waterfall is near the town of Petrohue, on the west shore of Todos los Santos.

Chiloe Island chile Chile’s coastal mountain range stretches the length of Chiloe Island, making the Pacific side of the island lush, green and even a bit wild! South America’s second-largest island, Chiloe is a showcase of Patagonia’s abundant natural beauty. Even Charles Darwin made note of it during his travels around the continent. The inner coast is much more mild, but no less enticing. This is where most of the island’s residents live. For most of them, the sea is their life. Fishing is the main industry, and the bounty of the sea is the major ingredient in the local cuisine. The inner coast, protected from the harsh elements on the other side of the island, is home to a special collection of wooden churches. These churches, mostly from the 19th century, are a excellent example of how highly skilled builders and artisans worked with missionaries to build churches by blending indigenous and foreign elements.

Santa Cruz chile Santa Cruz is one of the culturally richest cities in Chile. The Colchagua Valley city has maintained its ties with rural traditions and is the hub for region’s famous wine route. The Colchagua Museum has an impressive collection of pre-Columbian art and artifacts and modern traditional art and clothing.

Santiago chile Santiago is one of the liveliest South American capitals. The city, with its dozens of museums, galleries and music clubs, is a cultural gem. For a spectacular view of Santiago, ride Santiago the funicular up Cerro San Cristóbal in the center of the city for a panorama that includes the Andes Mountains to the east.

Ushuaia, Argentina

Surrounded by mountains, forests and the sea, Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world. Its skyline is dominated by stately Martial Glacier. Nearby, the impressive Tierra del Fuego National Park is a showcase of verdant evergreens, turquoise lakes and colorful indigenous birds.

Young gaucho

Wine making in Chile dates from the 16th century, when Spanish conquistadors planted vines they brought with them. But only in the past few decades have Chilean wines become a worldwide sensation. In 2005, Wine Enthusiast magazine named the Colchagua Valley the best wine region in the world for red wines. Colchagua is the southernmost of the wine valleys south of Santiago, Chile’s capital. The valley’s dry Mediterranean-like climate—hot days and cool nights—are perfect for fostering a vineyard, especially those growing cabernet sauvignon grapes. The Tinguiririca River ensures the fruit never gets too thirsty. The terroir sets the conditions for these famously hard grapes to ripen to perfection! The valleys’s vineyards also produce highly regarded merlots, syrahs, carmeneres and malbecs.

Day 2

Cape Horn / Wulaia Bay, Chile

Disembark in Cape Horn National Park (weather permitting) in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago and marvel at the 1,394-foot (425 m) sheer promontory towering over the sea. Afterward, visit Wulaia Bay, site of the region’s largest aboriginal settlements.

Day 3

During the breeding season, the shores of Argentina and Chile are inhabited by penguin colonies. Predominantly the Magellanic penguins, but the Rockhopper, Macaroni and Humboldt species also nest along these coasts. The penguins arrive in August to dig their burrows. In October, females lay a single egg. Soon, parents are busily feeding their chick, who remains on land until February. At the end of March and in early April, the birds take to the sea and follow a northward migration route. In recent years, the effect of global warming has been noted to delay the onset of their annual journey.

Gunther Plüschow Glacier, Chile

Admire majestic Gunther Plüschow Glacier from the ship. Then board smaller boats for a close look at the Piloto and Nena glaciers.

Day 4

Magdalena Island, Chile

Stop at Magdalena Island, where you may see Magellanic penguins. Take a scenic walk to a light house that guides ships through the strait of Magellan.

Its broad boulevards lined with upscale boutiques, cafés, plazas and quaint museums will remind you of a stylish European capital. To get a sense of the city’s soul, step into a tango hall and watch couples put on masterful displays of the highly charged and deeply revered dance.
