Day Eight EPHESUS

Depart for Izmir and The Marmara Hotel.

Cappadocia Experience the astonishing jewel of central Anatolia, Cappadocia. Its surreal landscape was destined millions of years ago when volcanic eruptions from Mount Erciyes smothered hundreds of square miles with lava. Over time, rain and wind reshaped the rock, creating a bewitching landscape of deep valleys, pyramids, towers of stone columns and bizarre rock formations. Most amazingly, the local population carved homes, churches, monasteries and chapels adorned with exquisite frescoes into the rock. During Roman rule, Cappadocia became a place of refuge for early Christians, who created an estimated 36 underground cities. In times of peace, the people of Cappadocia lived above ground, but when threatened, they would take refuge in these underground cities for up to six months at a time. Over time, the history of these cities was forgotten, until “rediscovered” by a French priest in 1907.

Local Flavor: Enjoy lunch at the Steam Train Museum, which houses the private car of Ataturk. Excursion: House of the Virgin Mary. Visit the house believed to be the last home of the Virgin Mary, built on a mountain overlooking the Aegean Sea. The home is a sacred site for both Catholics and Muslims and its spring is believed to have healing powers. The foundation dates from the first century. Excursion: Ephesus. Take in the well-preserved ruins of this ancient port city, once a prosperous capital of the Roman Empire. Today you will see the theater, carved into Mount Pion, and believed to be the largest in the ancient world. Ephesus’s marvels include the Library of Celsus, the Gates of Hercules and the Temple of Hadrian. Day Nine BODRUM

Excursion: Castle of St. Peter. Built in the 15th century by the Knights Hospitaller, the Castle of St. Peter was a refuge for Christians before it fell to the Muslims who converted it to a mosque. Today it serves as the Museum of Underwater Archeology, displaying an array of once-submerged riches. Independent Exploration: Bodrum is a charming seaside resort. Built on a hill, it overlooks the water. Enjoy time to explore the city center of Bodrum at your leisure. Local Flavor: Enjoy lunch in the quaint village of Gumusluk, at a seaside restaurant. Day Ten BODRUM

Optional Excursion: Kos Island. Travel by

ferry to the Greek island of Kos, birthplace of Hippocrates. After visiting the Asklepieion, or sacred healing temple, you will have time to explore the island at your leisure. Independent Exploration: For those not participating in the optional excursion, the day is yours to explore Bodrum. This evening, attend a Farewell Reception and Dinner at a restaurant on a pier with a fantastic view of the bay.

Climate-controlled guestrooms are equipped with satellite TV, wireless Internet and mini-bar.
