FROM THE A.D.’S DESK

Dear Bruins: Welcome to the 2011-12 UCLA Athletics Annual Report. With our past athletic and academic year complete, I wanted to thank the Bruin Family for its support not only in this year, but in years past as well. Without the generosity displayed by each of you, whether it is in sacrificing your time to attend sporting events or donating to the Wooden Athletic Fund, or both, our athletic program would not be able to enjoy such success while continuing to compete for and win national championships. I know I speak for each of our coaches, student-athletes and staff members when I say your efforts are greatly appreciated. All told, UCLA finished in third place in the 2011-12 During the 2011-12 school year, we took home our Learfield Sports Directors Cup standings. UCLA is one nation-leading 108th NCAA Championship when of just two schools to place among the top six in the the women’s volleyball team stormed through the final standings at least 17 times in the 19-year history tournament, culminating with a scintillating four-set of the Directors Cup. Two teams finished fifth nationally (men’s golf, baseball), giving UCLA a total of nine teams that ended their seasons among the top five, one of the best such displays in the country. Moreover, two teams finished eighth at their NCAA Championships – women’s golf and rowing, the latter of which posted its best placement since we reinstated the program. Three Bruin teams were 17th in the final NCAA standings – women’s soccer, softball and men’s track and field – while the women’s track team ended its season just outside the top 20, in 21st place, at the national meet.

The 2011-12 school year also proved to be a unique one for each of our teams that call Pauley Pavilion home. As the $136 million construction project charged forward on budget and on time, each of the teams that played there found a new, temporary home.

BRUINS IN THE COMMUNITY UCLA’s student-athletes volunteered over 2,500 hours in community outreach events during the 2011-12 academic year. UCLA Athletics hosted over 20 events on campus and attended several events throughout the Los Angeles area. These service opportunities allow UCLA’s studentathletes the chance to mentor youth, give back to the community and serve as ambassadors for UCLA Athletics. Some student-athletes have also created, initiated and implemented service projects and activities with assistance and support from the Bruin Athletic Council. Examples of the past year’s events include: • Dribble for the Cure • Weekly visits to Mattel Children’s Hospital • Team Prime Time • Prime Time Games: Championship Saturday • UCLA Lab School Jog-A-Thon • ‘I’m Going to College’ Program • Adopt a Classroom • Super Bowl Spirit Day at 186th Elementary School • Athlete Ally Day

• Bruin for a Day with Emerson Middle School • P.L.A.Y. Day with Bruin Belles Service Association • Field Day with the Santa Monica Boys & Girls Club • Samaritan’s Feet • Marathon Kids • Sports clinics • Elementary school activities and reading days • Individual speaking engagements A young UCLA fan receives an autograph at an outreach event.

Team Prime Time Student-athletes volunteered their time with Team Prime Time (TPT), an after-school program for atrisk children from low-income areas of Los Angeles that combines academics, athletics, leadership training and the arts in order to prepare them for the future and allow them to reach their full potential.

Prime Time Games For the past three years, student-athletes have participated in Team Prime Time's fully inclusive sports program, the Prime Time Games. This fullinclusion, peer-mentor program helps economically disadvantaged and under-served middle school students from Team Prime Time’s after school program ("coaches") coach and play alongside children with developmental disabilities ("athletes"). UCLA hosted the third annual event (Championship Saturday) in June, where UCLA’s student-athletes served as honorary coaches, captains, and officials for the inclusive soccer and basketball games.

The event has grown each year with a four-event total of over 3,000 participants contributing over $376,000 in the fight against children's cancer.

Throughout the year, several Bruin student-athletes visited playrooms at Mattel Children’s Hospital on a weekly basis, spending time with patients and their families. They are often asked to make special visits to patients who are not able to leave their rooms. This spring, Fox Sports West highlighted football players Johnathan Franklin and Jeff Baca on their weekly visits to the hospital. Student-athletes also volunteered their time with Mattel’s Teen Adventure Program and the annual Halloween “Trick or Treat” event for the patients at the hospital.

PAULEY PAVILION RENOVATION

SPAULDING FIELD

UCLA’s legendary Pauley Pavilion began its first-class expansion and renovation in March 2010 with the goal of improving the building not only as a basketball arena, but also as a multi-purpose facility. UCLA publicly announced the “Campaign of Champions” in May 2009, detailing a plan for the transformation of the historic arena to be complete by Fall of 2012. Over the course of the 2011-12 academic year, the building remained closed to construction as several of UCLA’s athletic teams competed either off campus or at adjacent venues on campus.

The Bruins’ home football practice facility underwent an extensive renovation during the summer of 2012. Located south of Pauley Pavilion, the facility features one synthetic field and one natural turf field.

Highlights of Pauley Pavilion’s renovation and expansion • New seating bowl with new aisles and steps with safety handrails (new seats, seating sections, entry points) • Retractable seating system on the lower level includes individual padded seats instead of benches • Renovated bowl includes a new floor system and over 1,000 additional seats, bringing capacity close to 14,000 • New center-hung HD video board and LED ribbon board that encircles the arena’s interior • Facility will feature more than 25 additional points of sale for concessions, increased number of restrooms • North side will include large locker rooms with player lounges for the men’s and women’s basketball teams • Other features for student-athletes include film room, sports medicine rooms, weight room, equipment room • Pavilion Club on the mezzanine of the same structure will serve the campus for numerous special events • The exterior will feature a new marketplace on the south side and a park on the east • In addition, the building’s exterior will feature an expanded Bruin Walk to the north creating the new “front door” • North side of the pavilion will feature a grand lobby

Key renovations at Spaulding Field The Bruins’ entire practice facility had its previous fields replaced. The sub-surfaces at Spaulding Field were re-graded, prepped with new drainage systems and protected with heavy waterproof lining material and a drainage mat. New sand and rubber material-filled AstroTurf synthetic surface rings the entire facility and provides a full-width practice field on the south side. The northern field is a newly-sodded natural turf field that features the same grass type used at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.

The image above depicts what Pauley Pavilion will look like from the north side upon completion, prior to the UCLA men’s basketball team’s first game against Indiana State on Friday, Nov. 9, 2012.

UCLA’s football team spent the first two weeks of fall camp in August practicing at Cal State San Bernardino while the team’s practice facility underwent renovations. The Bruins returned to Spaulding Field on Saturday, Aug. 18, with players giving rave reviews about the new field surfaces.

ROSE BOWL RENOVATION The historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena has served as UCLA’s home football stadium since the 1982 season. The Rose Bowl is undergoing a phased renovation process with the project finishing its second year of a sequenced construction plan. The stadium began undergoing the extensive, multiyear renovation in 2011 with final completion expected prior to the 2013 football season. Year-by-year breakdown of ongoing construction at the Rose Bowl • Year 1 (2011): Upgraded site utilities, enlarged four south tunnels Stadium’s north video board, east scoreboard and south scoreboard were installed • Year 2 (2012): Entire press box was gutted in the offsesason Press box’s center and south sections were rebuilt and outfitted for the 2012 football season • Year 3 (2013):

North section of press box to be completed Field wall to be restored to its original configuration New patron access way will be built in tunnels 23A and 28A Concourse perimeter to be enlarged around the stadium Stadium’s concourse to feature new gate entry structures, restrooms and concessions

The entire press box and adjacent luxury suites were gutted after the 2011 college football season, with the press box’s center and south sections rebuilt by Sept. 2012 (photo from July 9, 2012).

WOODEN CENTER IMPROVEMENTS

BASEBALL ADDS MORE SEATS

Yates Gymnasium A new gymnastics team facility featuring a locker room with oak wood lockers, restrooms, showers, a training room, student lounge and conference room is being constructed on the second floor of the John Wooden Center. The 1,800-square foot facility will overlook the gymnasium floor with completion anticipated by early 2013.

UCLA completed installation of 580 chairback seats at Jackie Robinson Stadium prior to the 2012 season. The renovation project brought the total number of chairback seats to 1,525. The facility holds as many as 1,820 fans with the inclusion of bleacher seating on the third base side.

Collins Court This venue served as home to UCLA’s women’s basketball, gymnastics and both volleyball teams in 2011-12. The facility was upgraded with a new lighting system, and a full event production video system that featured a 12-foot by 18-foot LED video board with a video camera and event replay system.

South press box construction at tunnel 22

The baseball program installed 36 new lockers and added state-of-the-art, interior artificial turf in the team’s clubhouse. UCLA’s additional seating came in handy as the Bruins hosted NCAA Regional action for the third consecutive year. In addition, the team hosted the NCAA Los Angeles Super Regional for the second time in three seasons, advancing to the College World Series.

BRUIN VARSITY CLUB

BRUIN VARSITY CLUB

Bruin Varsity Club Networking Night

As a UCLA former student-athlete you are exceptional. As a UCLA varsity letterwinner you are unique. Because of your participation and achievements as a UCLA varsity athlete, you will forever be a part of the greatest collegiate sports program in the country. The goal of the Bruin Varsity Club is to recognize and honor all former UCLA varsity student-athletes for their dedication, excellence and for their contributions made to the success of UCLA athletics.

UCLA’s Bruin Varsity Club has hosted a “Networking Night” event the last two years in conjunction with the Bruin Athletic Council. The event typically features 10 successful Bruin Varsity Club mentors who speak with student-athletes about professional development in a roundtable discussion format.

The Bruin Varsity Club is a prestigious group of former student-athletes, sharing and reliving experiences, networking, participating in social activities, promoting and nurturing the Bruin tradition of both athletic and academic excellence. As a member of the Bruin Varsity Club you will share camaraderie among a diverse group of remarkable people. Whether your collegiate athletic career ended last season or 60 years ago, whether you live in California or on the other side of the country, you are forever connected to the champions that are UCLA. With membership come benefits and opportunities. Join your fellow UCLA former student-athletes in sustaining, encouraging and supporting the growth and success of UCLA athletics.

“Networking Night” typically begins with a period of social networking, where student-athletes are given the opportunity to practice their professional etiquette skills with each mentor. The event continues with three rotations of roundtable discussion led by Bruin Varsity Club mentors. The focus of these discussions helps provide networking tips and insight as to each mentor’s personal and professional post-graduate journey.
