SEASON OUTLOOK
UCLA Rowing Seeks Return to NCAA Championships Bruins enter 2011 spring season with high aspirations after successful 2010 campaign
After finishing 12th overall at the NCAA Championships last year, the UCLA women’s rowing program looks to finish its season with a top finish at the Pac-10 Championships and another berth in the NCAA Championships this spring. Under the guidance of 10th-year head coach Amy Fuller Kearney, the Bruins feature a young roster with a wealth of talent. Fuller Kearney has helped key UCLA’s success since helping bring back the rowing program in 2001. The Bruins sent their varsity eight crew as an at-large selection to the NCAA Championships in 2005, 2006 and 2007, before breaking through with a team bid to the national event in 2010. Knowing the commitment and effort needed to advance to the NCAA Championships, this year’s team looks to earn a back-to-back appearance to the prestigious year-end races. While the bulk of UCLA’s roster lies in its freshmen and sophomore classes, the Bruins will look to a trio of four-year rowers to help lead the way. Seniors Alaizah Koorji and Rachel LaBella have rowed in UCLA’s varsity eight since their freshman season and senior Caroline Curson has rowed in the second varsity since her sophomore year. All three seniors are confident that their best is yet to come. Koorji, a standout coxswain from Orinda, Calif., helped lead the varsity eight to a fourth-place finish at the Pac-10 Championships in 2010, allowing UCLA to earn a fifth-place team finish. “I would put Alaizah in the top five of coxswains that I’ve ever worked with, and that includes my time competing with the USA National Team,” Fuller Kearney said. “I’ve been very impressed with her leadership in the coxswain seat. Her improvements this year have been technical, and her maturity really helps raise our team’s effort at practice.” LaBella will be counted upon to stroke the varsity eight in 2011 after having rowed seven seat in that boat as a junior. Hailing from Princeton Junction, N.J., LaBella rowed bow seat in the Bruins’ varsity eight as a sophomore and freshman. “Rachel did a fantastic job in the fall and stroked her first race at UCLA at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival in November,” Fuller Kearney said. “She has always been good at the drive, helping make the boat go fast. But now she is really letting that boat ride and working on the recovery. We’re hoping that she will finish her career with her best season.” Curson rowed seven seat in the Bruins’ second varsity eight in 2010 and will compete for a spot in either of the second varsity eight or varsity four boats this season. After having been bothered by a hip injury in her first season in Westwood, Curson returned to race in the second varsity eight as a sophomore. “Caroline is a good oar and has become a very smooth rower,” Fuller Kearney said. “With the competitiveness we have seen for spots on the varsity eight, we would be thrilled to see Caroline compete in the second eight as a senior. She is somebody who we can rely on to be consistent.” UCLA welcomes back five other seniors this fall, each of whom should compete for time on the water in the Bruins’ NCAA boats. Katherine Hruska and Anoush Khojikian both made solid contributions as juniors after having transferred to UCLA from junior colleges. Hruska rowed in the second varsity eight and varsity four crews in the second half of the spring in 2010 and has emerged as one of the Bruins most fit athletes. “Kate has really been driving the competitive component of this team,” Fuller Kearney said. “She has made great strides in the fall with technical aspects of her rowing. She is definitely in the mix to make the varsity eight.” Khojikian rowed to a first-place finish in the open eight at the two-day San Diego Crew Classic last season and raced in the second varsity four at the SoCal Challenge. After having spent two seasons rowing at Orange Coast College, this will mark her fourth year competing at the collegiate varsity level. Khojikian is competing for a spot in the second varsity eight and varsity four boats. “Anoush has trained really hard, becoming one of our most competitive rowers in the weight room,” Fuller Kearney said. “She makes it a personal challenge to lift more or as much as anybody. It’s been a joy to watch her improve.” Christa Czer, Monica Harvancik and Chelsea Wolfe round out the Bruins’ group of eight seniors. Each of these three rowers joined the team as walk-ons in the fall of 2009 and will push for time on the water in 2011. Harvancik served as one of the Bruins’ two alternate rowers at the NCAA Championships last May. “Monica is very competitive all the time, and you can see that when she is on the water,” Fuller Kearney said. “Christa and Chelsea both have provided valuable contributions every day, and they bring a fantastic work ethic to our team.” UCLA returns three juniors in 2011 – Anastasia Alexander, Ariel Handler and Megan Danley. Alexander has rowed on the Bruins’ varsity eight the last two seasons and is expected to compete for a spot in that boat again this spring. She rowed bow seat in the eight in each of UCLA’s races in 2010, helping the varsity eight secure a fourth-place finish at the Pac-10 Championships and a ninth-place finish at the season-culminating NCAA Championships. “Anastasia came back to campus this year extremely fit,” Fuller Kearney said. “We really look forward to seeing what she can do. She has such a smooth oar, and she also makes it look effortless.” Handler and sophomore Mia Hamano will compete for the coxswain seat in the second varsity eight. Handler coxed the second varsity eight and varsity four crews throughout her sophomore season (2010). Hamano coxed the second varsity eight at the end of last spring – against Oregon State and USC, at Pac-10 Championships and at NCAA Championships. “Ariel is an extremely organized coxswain who helped the four to a third-place medal at Pac-10 Championships last season,” Fuller Kearney said. “It will be a battle for her to get into that second varsity seat because Mia Hamano has also been working very hard. We’re looking to see which of those two coxswains will step up.” Danley enters her third year with the Bruins after having joined the team as a walk-on in the fall of 2008. After splitting time between novice crews and the second varsity eight as a freshman, Danley had limited time with the varsity four on the team last spring.
“We are thrilled to have Megan back,” Fuller Kearney said. “She out-performs everybody in the weight room. This season, she has a great chance to earn a spot in the varsity four.” UCLA’s sophomore class is highlighted by Britta Syverson, Jessica McGuire and Alexa Farafontoff. Syverson secured second-team Pocock All-America honors and second-team CRCA All-West Region acclaim as a freshman in 2010. The native of Minneapolis rowed four seat in the varsity eight in each race last spring, helping the Bruins’ eight earn a ninth-place finish at NCAA Championships. “Britta embodies what an All-American is all about,” Fuller Kearney said. “She always trains hard, carries a positive attitude and brings her best each day. Our sophomore class is so strong this season, and she’s a big reason behind that. We’re thrilled to have her on the team, and she is truly a pleasure to work with.” McGuire is competing for a spot in the varsity eight after having joined the team as a walk-on in the fall of 2009. Last spring, she was rowing six seat in the second varsity eight at the end of the season, racing in that boat against Oregon State and USC in dual-meets and at the Pac-10 Championships. At the NCAA Championships, she stroked the second varsity eight. “Jessica put together a very impressive freshman year,” Fuller Kearney said. “Her first stroke was in October of 2009, and by the end of the season, she was stroking the second varsity eight at the NCAA Championships to a 15th-place finish. She has a natural feel for the boat, and we’re just excited to see how far she can go.” Farafontoff rowed five seat and three seat in the second varsity eight throughout her freshman year. With aspirations to one day row for the USA National Team, she is competing for a spot in the varsity eight this season. “Alexa comes in fit after every break, whether in the winter or summer,” Fuller Kearney said. “I can completely trust her to come in ready to race and ready to fight. She rows both port and starboard, so that helps double her chances of being able to row in the varsity eight this year.” Other returning sophomores who had considerable contributions as freshmen last spring include Hillary Caldwell, Erica Lockard, Kirstin Snook and Mariko Snyder. Caldwell missed the majority of the fall due to injury, but shined for the Bruins’ in the varsity eight during her freshman year last spring. She rowed three seat in the varsity eight in every race (except NCAA Championships, where she rowed five seat) and should push for a seat in the varsity eight again this year. “Hillary really was our most improved rower last season,” Fuller Kearney said. “She struggled this fall with an injury, and we are looking forward to her getting stronger and getting back into the mix next quarter.” Lockard and Snook both rowed in the second varsity eight as freshmen in 2010, helping push the Bruins to an NCAA Championship berth. Lockard rowed three seat through the first half of the season before moving to the second varsity’s bow seat prior to Pac-10 Championships. Snook rowed two seat in the second varsity eight throughout her freshman year. “Both Erica and Kirstin are really striving to make changes,” Fuller Kearney said. “Erica has made great strides, realizing that it wasn’t about surviving but about thriving. Kirstin has trained very hard and has shown to be very competitive in anything that she does.” Snyder entered the rowing program as a walk-on in the fall of 2009 and finished her freshman year rowing five seat in the novice eight. The sophomore from Westlake Village, Calif., looks for a spot one of the three varsity crews this spring. “Mariko came to us with a swimming background, but I knew that she could be pretty good,” Fuller Kearney said. “She set the fastest erg score on the team in the fall, and has become a fantastic competitive addition to our team.” Other sophomores looking to land spots rowing in either of the varsity eights or varsity four crews include Tanya Smith, Emily McLaughlin, Alexis McPhee and Tamar Schaap. Smith has joined the Bruins after transferring to UCLA from UC Santa Barbara following the 2010 season. McLaughlin rowed in UCLA’s novice eight in the second half of the season, including at the Pac-10 Championships. McPhee stroked the open eight to a first-place finish at the two-day San Diego Crew Classic before rowing either two or three seat in the varsity four for the remainder of the year. Schaap rowed five seat in the first-place-winning open eight at last year’s San Diego Crew Classic before racing six seat in the novice eight through Pac-10 Championships. “Our sophomore class is very deep, and these girls are all going to push for spots in NCAA boats this spring,” Fuller Kearney said. “Tanya is a true athlete, and we’re thrilled that she has joined our program after a successful year at UC Santa Barbara. Alexis made big strides on the erg for us in the fall, and Emily has had among the top eight erg times on our team. Tamar is another walk-on from last season who competed in the novice eight and dropped five seconds off her 500-split time in the fall.” The Bruins’ freshman class is headed by Kat Lauer, a native of Madison, Conn., and Olivia Smith, who hails from Sunnyvale, Calif., in the northern portion of the state. Both entered UCLA in the fall with extensive junior rowing resumes. Lauer served as team captain of the Connecticut Boat Club last season, helping lead her varsity eight crew to a gold medal at the 2010 Nationals. Olivia Smith rowed for NorCal Rowing Club, earning a third-place finish at the Southwest Junior Rowing Championships, and attended USA Junior National Team Selection Camp. “Both Kat and Olivia have made huge strides since joining our program in the fall,” Fuller Kearney said. “Olivia is naturally long, lean and powerful. It’s surprising how much power she can generate. Kat’s erg score was not her strength when she began in the fall, but she improved it dramatically. They are both going to have very good careers here at UCLA.” Other freshmen looking to compete for time in any of the NCAA boats include Victoria Babson, Taylor Schlossberg, Nicole Sung-Jereczek and Deanna Wong. “We are in a great position as we enter the spring, to have anywhere from 10 to 12 athletes looking for spots in the varsity eight,” Fuller Kearney said. “The same is true with our second varsity eight. That means that the four and second varsity four boats will both be stronger. We could be faster this year in all three boats than we have been in the past.”

FULLER KEARNEY HEAD COACH 10th season Alma Mater: UC Santa Barbara ’90 Entering her 10th season at the helm of the UCLA women’s rowing program in 2010-11, Amy Fuller Kearney has established the Bruins as a national competitor. After having made a successful transition from a club team to a varsity program in 2001-2002, UCLA earned its first-ever team bid to the NCAA Championships in May 2010, securing a 12th place finish at the national event that season. Additionally, the Bruins sent a varsity eight crew as an at-large selection to the NCAA Championships in three consecutive seasons (2005-07). The eight’s highest finish in that three-year span was a 12th place finish in 2006. UCLA’s eight finished ninth at the 2010 NCAA Championships, placing higher than any Pac-10 program at the national competition. This season, Fuller Kearney looks to lead the Bruins to the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year. Fuller Kearney led the Bruins’ varsity and second varsity eights to the Pac-10 Championship Grand Final from 2004 through 2007. In 2010, UCLA’s varsity eight finished fourth at the Pac-10 Championships, while the program’s varsity four earned a bronze-medal finish at the conference event. That year, the Bruins secured a fifth-place team finish at the Pac-10 Championships. UCLA’s second varsity eight won the silver medal in 2005 and 2006 at the Pac-10 Championships. The past three seasons, Fuller Kearney has guided UCLA to a consistent place in the national rankings. The Bruins secured a ranking as high as No. 11 in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches’ Association (CRCA)/US Rowing poll in 2010 and as high as No. 13 in 2008 and 2009. In 2010, UCLA registered impressive dual-meet victories against Loyola Marymount and San Diego State to open the spring season. UCLA’s varsity eight finished third on consecutive days, including in Sunday’s Grand Final, at the San Diego Crew Classic, while the team’s open eight crew earned two first-place finishes. The Bruins varsity eight defeated Clemson and Notre Dame at the SoCal Challenge, before cruising past Oregon State and San Diego the next week in Dexter Lake, Ore. UCLA’s fifth-place team finish at Pac-10 Championships was highlighted by a bronze medal-winning performance from the varsity four. Six Pac-10 teams earned berths to the NCAA Championships, as UCLA secured its first team berth in program history. At the NCAA Championships, UCLA varsity eight finished third in its first-day elimination heat, allowing the crew to advance to Saturday’s semifinal. After a fifth-place finish in the semifinal, the varsity eight closed its season with a third-place finish in the Petite Final. UCLA’s second varsity eight and varsity four crews advanced to the Third Final, finishing third and second, respectively. Following the NCAA Championships, UCLA’s Alexandra Bolt (first team) and Britta Syverson (second team) secured All-America honors, as announced by the CRCA. In 2009, the Bruins opened the season with strong dual-meet wins against local opponents Loyola Marymount and San Diego State. UCLA’s varsity eight won races on consecutive days against No. 12 Ohio State and No. 13 Clemson, respectively, at the Pac-10 Challenge. The Bruins finished strong at the San Diego Crew Classic, as the first eight raced to a first-place finish in the Petite Final, while the second eight cruised to a third-place finish. On day two of the Lake Natoma Challenge, UCLA’s first eight won its heat against Minnesota and Tennessee. At the season-culminating Pac-10 Championships, the varsity eight won the Petite Final while the second eight finished in second place. At season’s end, Vanessa Teff secured CRCA All-West Region honors and All-Pac-10 accolades for a school-record fourth consecutive season. In addition, five Bruins were honored as CRCA National Scholar-Athlete selections. Three of those student-athletes were also selected to the Pac-10 All-Academic team. In 2008, UCLA opened its spring campaign with dominating dual-meet victories over Loyola Marymount and San Diego State. The Bruins’ first eight also claimed dual-meet wins over the University of Victoria and the University of Central Florida. The second eight rowed to wins over Saint Mary’s College’s first eight and the University of Central Florida. Both crews had strong performances at the San Diego Crew Classic. The first eight placed fifth overall in the invitation-only Jessop-Whittier Cup while the second eight finished sixth in the race for the Hungness Trophy. Both eights finished their seasons with wins in the Petite Final at the Pac-10 Championships. Individual team members were honored with a series of All-America, All-Region and All-Pac-10 athletic and academic honors. For the third consecutive year, Vanessa Teff earned Pocock AllAmerica honors, CRCA All-West Region accolades and All-Pac-10 honors. Eight Bruins were named All-Pac-10 Academic selections. Under the guidance of Fuller Kearney in 2007, UCLA’s varsity eight crew advanced to the NCAA Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn., finishing 14th overall. Fuller Kearney guided UCLA to first-place finishes in back-to-back dual meets against Loyola Marymount and San Diego State to open the season. In the fourth weekend of the season, the Bruins performed well at the San Diego Crew Classic, placing its varsity crews fourth and third, respectively, in the grand finals. Midway through the season, UCLA’s second varsity raced past USC in the annual dual meet between both crosstown rivals. In the season-culminating Pac-10 Championships, UCLA finished fourth overall. Fuller Kearney’s team earned recognition at season’s end, as two senior rowers (Elizabeth Lee and Leach Wachtel) earned CRCA National Scholar-Athlete honors, and two others were named CRCA All-West Region selections (Vanessa Teff and Lynn Hancock). Teff earned first-team Pocock All-America honors in addition to capturing All-Pac-10 team accolades. A capable group both on the water and in the classroom, 10 Bruins gained Pac-10 All-Academic honors. In 2006, the first eight raced to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. UCLA began the 2006 spring season earning first-place dual-meet finishes against Loyola Marymount, UC Irvine and Minnesota before posting a sixth-place finish at Pac-10 Championships in May. At the San Diego Crew Classic, UCLA advanced to the Grand Final in all three events and finished fifth in the varsity eight race. The Bruins finished first in all four events at the Miller Cup, and later capped their season with a strong performance at the NCAA Championships. In the spring of 2005, the Bruins sent an at-large eight to the NCAA Championships, where UCLA finished 15th overall. That spring, UCLA reached the Grand Final in every event at the Pac-
10 Championships. The first eight raced to a top-16 ranking and an at-large invite to the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history. The second eight made history, bringing home a silver medal from the Pac-10 Championships, a first at UCLA since rowing was elevated to NCAA varsity status. Named UCLA rowing’s head coach on July 2, 2001 – the sport’s inaugural NCAA season – Fuller Kearney came to Westwood after having served one year as assistant coach for the Stanford women’s crew program (2000-01). At Stanford, she guided the Cardinal to its first top-20 national ranking in the program’s NCAA history. Prior to serving as assistant coach at Stanford, Fuller Kearney was an assistant coach at San Diego State for two years (1998-2000). She worked with the Aztecs while training for the 2000 Olympics with the U.S. National Team. Fuller Kearney has also spent time working as an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga (1996-98) and for the U.S. National Team (1997). From 1993-96, Fuller Kearney served as a motivational speaker for Champion International, a U.S. Rowing sponsor. She began her coaching career at UC Santa Barbara, her alma mater. From 1990-91, she led the women’s novice program. Two years later, from 1992-93, she was the head coach of the women’s team. Fuller Kearney is a three-time Olympian and former World Record holder. Women’s rowing first started at UCLA in 1970 from a support group for the men’s program known as “Shell and Oar.” Three years later, in 1973, Larry Daugherty was named the first head coach of UCLA women’s rowing. The women still struggled for intercollegiate status, but they eventually won in 1974 through the determination of the athletes and the support of then ViceChancellor Norman P. Miller. In 1975, just one year after the inception of the sport into the collegiate ranks, UCLA won the National Championships in the lightweight four. In 1976, the Miller Cup Invitational was established in honor of Dr. Miller for his commitment to the program. That same year, UCLA won its first conference championship in the Pac-8, and the varsity eight won the Western Sprints Championships. Under Daugherty, the Bruins also won the NWRA Southwest Regional Championships in 1977, 1980, and 1982. In the mid 80’s, UCLA women’s rowing reappeared in the national spotlight. In 1984, under coach Jean Reilly, the Bruins

were national champions in the varsity four and lightweight four, and in 1985, they repeated as national champions in the varsity four. In the Pac-10 conference, UCLA holds two team titles from 1990 and 1991. The Bruins were the varsity four champions in 1984 and both the varsity eight and second varsity eight champions in 1990 and 1991. At the end of the 1991 season, women’s rowing was released by the UCLA Athletic Department and picked up the following year by UCLA Recreation. UCLA announced on Feb. 9, 2001 that it would once again sponsor rowing as an intercollegiate sport, active for the 2001-02 season. Now under the NCAA, UCLA women’s rowing is in its eighth season as a scholarship sport. The Bruins have regrouped under head coach Amy Fuller Kearney. She has already reestablished an alumni base and strengthened old ties and traditions, as well as introducing some new ones into the program.

Pac-10 Conference
The Conference of Champions Entering the 2010-11 season, the Pacific-10 Conference continues to uphold its tradition as the “Conference of Champions.” Pac-10 members have claimed an incredible 171 NCAA team titles over the past 20 seasons, including eight in 2009-10, averaging nearly nine championships per academic year. Even more impressive has been the breadth of the Pac-10’s success, with championships coming in 26 different men’s and women’s sports. The Pac-10 has led the nation in NCAA Championships in 44 of the last 50 years and finished second five times. Spanning nearly a century of outstanding achievements, the Pac-10 has captured 390 NCAA titles (267 men’s, 123 women’s), far outdistancing the runner-up Big Ten Conference’s 226 titles. The Conference’s reputation is further proven in the annual Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup competition, the prestigious award that honors the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country. Stanford won its 16th-consecutive Directors’ Cup in 2009-10, continuing its remarkable run. Seven of the top 25 Division I programs were Pac-10 member institutions: No. 1 Stanford, No. 4 UCLA, No. 9 California, No. 13 USC, No. 14 Oregon, No. 22 Arizona State and No. 24 Washington. The Pac-10’s three teams in the top 10 was second-most for any conference, behind only the ACC (4), while the Big 12, Big Ten and SEC had one team each. The Pac-10 captured eight NCAA titles in 2009-10, tying with the ACC for the nation’s most. Of those eight, Pac-10 teams claimed a nation’s-best five women’s NCAA crowns. California also captured the IRA National Championship in men’s rowing, the Pac-10’s ninth national title of the season. Oregon, Stanford, UCLA and USC each claimed NCAA team titles in the last academic year. The Trojans were the only team in the nation to win three crowns, while the Cardinal
and Bruins joined USC as three of only nine institutions to claim multiple crowns. The Trojans swept the men’s and women’s water polo titles, also adding the men’s tennis crown to its trophy case. The Cardinal claimed the top spot in men’s volleyball and women’s tennis, while the Bruins took home titles in women’s gymnastics and softball. The Pac-10 also had runners-up in 14 NCAA Championship events: men’s cross country (Oregon), women’s soccer (Stanford), men’s water polo (UCLA), women’s basketball (Stanford), men’s gymnastics (Stanford), men’s swimming (California), women’s swimming (Stanford), men’s indoor track and field (Oregon), baseball (UCLA), softball (Arizona), women’s golf (USC), women’s rowing (California), women’s outdoor track and field (Oregon) and women’s water polo (Stanford). Overall, the Conference had 33 teams finish in the top four at 20 NCAA Championship events. Participation in the postseason was a common occurrence for the Pac-10 in 2009-10. Of the 22 sports sponsored by the Conference, 19 witnessed at least half its teams participating in NCAA or other postseason action. The men sent 64 of a possible 90 teams into the postseason (71.1 percent), while the women sent 73 of a possible 99 teams (73.7 percent). The Conference swept two men’s and women’s sports, capturing national championship in water polo and tennis. USC claimed the men’s and women’s in water polo. The Trojans also claimed the men’s tennis title, while Stanford came out on top in the women’s bracket. On the men’s side, Pac-10 members have won 267 NCAA team championships, far ahead of the 200 claimed by the runner-up Big Ten. Men’s NCAA crowns have come at a phenomenal rate for the Pac-10 - 15 basketball titles by five schools (more than any other conference), 51 tennis
28
titles, 44 outdoor track & field crowns, and 26 baseball titles. Pac-10 members have won 24 of the last 41 NCAA titles in volleyball, 36 of the last 51 in water polo, and 21 in swimming & diving national championships. Individually, the Conference has produced an impressive number of NCAA men’s individual champions, as well, boasting 1,171 individual crowns.

UCLA ATHLETICS WOODEN ATHLETIC FUND The UCLA Athletics Campaign has endowed 208 of the 282 NCAA allowable athletic grants-in-aid. UCLA Athletics expresses its sincere gratitude to the individuals listed for their support in the continuing effort to distinguish UCLA as the nation’s premier academic and athletics institution.
Tax-deductible gifts to the UCLA Athletic Fund play a pivotal role in meeting the escalating costs of team travel, recruiting, equipment replacement and, most importantly, in providing athletic scholarships. Now more than ever, private support is necessary if UCLA is to maintain its position as the best athletic program in the country. Your help is truly needed and greatly appreciated.
An endowment generates income to the University in perpetuity. By investing the gift principal and using just the interest earned to help meet the cost of a grant-inaid assures the Athletic Department of ongoing funds to maintain the quality and diversity of its program.
To encourage private support of our program, the best football and basketball tickets are allocated to our most generous donors. Members of the Wooden Athletic Fund receive priority in the assignment of tickets for home contests in the Rose Bowl and in Pauley Pavilion in accordance with the UCLA Priority Seating Policy. In many cases, special reserved parking is also available for our donors.
Currently, UCLA provides financial assistance to over 650 student-athletes participating in 22 intercollegiate sports. However, expenses such as the cost of tuition for student-athletes have increased dramatically in the last several years while department revenues have remained relatively stable.
Any questions regarding the Wooden Athletic Fund or the benefits members receive, should be directed toward UCLA’s Athletic Development Office at (310) 206-3302.

UCLA ATHLETICS Dr. Gene Block became chancellor of UCLA in August 2007. As chief executive officer, he oversees all aspects of the university’s three-part mission of education, research and service.

BLOCK
A champion of public universities, Chancellor Block has set four major priorities for UCLA during his administration: academic excellence, diversity, civic engagement and financial security. He has called for UCLA to deepen its engagement with the Los Angeles region and to increase access for students from underrepresented populations. Chancellor Block holds UCLA faculty appointments in psychiatry and bio-behavioral sciences in the David Geffen School of Medicine and in physiological science in the College of Letters and Science. He also heads a research laboratory on campus that is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
CHANCELLOR • 4th Year Alma Mater: Stanford ’70 Chancellor Block and his wife, Carol, have two adult children. The Blocks are avid Bruin fans and attend the competitions of various Bruin athletic programs.
Previously, he served as vice president and provost of the University of Virginia. He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stanford University and a master’s and Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Oregon. In eight years as UCLA’s Director of Athletics, Daniel G. Guerrero has boldly placed his imprint on the school’s highly-successful athletic program. Guerrero, one of the most respected and talented administrators in intercollegiate athletics, has placed his mark on the program as the director of athletics at UCLA. He is currently serving as president of the Division I Athletic Directors Association. In addition, he is the first vice-president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and a member of the NACDA Executive Committee. This past June, Guerrero competed a fiveyear term on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee. In addition, he serves on the NACDA Executive Committee and is also on the executive board of the Division I Athletic Directors Association. In June of 2007, he was named NACDA Division I West Region Athletic Director of the Year. In his first eight years, Guerrero has clearly established a pattern of “image and substance” that few in his profession can match. UCLA stands as the No. 1 University in the nation for NCAA team championships (106) won, a number that continues to grow under his direction. In those eight years, UCLA teams have won 20 NCAA team titles (the highest total in the nation in that span) in 11 different sports, finished second 16 times and have had an additional 28 Top Five finishes. A staggering 152 teams (of 184 possible) have qualified for NCAA postseason competition and the football team has appeared in seven bowl games. The program has also won 45 conference
