UCLA Rowing Seeks Return to NCAA Championships Bruins enter 2012 spring season looking to return to NCAA Championships for the second time in three years After finishing 12th overall at the 2010 NCAA Championships, the UCLA women’s rowing program looks to return to the NCAA Championships for the second time in three seasons and finish its year with a top finish at the Pac-12 Championships. Under the guidance of 11th-year head coach Amy Fuller Kearney, the Bruins feature a young roster with a wealth of talent.

feisty,” Fuller Kearney said. “The big component for us right now is taking that desire to be great and turning it into the daily discipline and fight that is required to get there. Those are two very different things.” Sophomore Carolina Paini slowly moved her way up from the novice eight to the varsity four to the second varsity eight at the end of last season and is looking to build off that momentum heading into the spring season.

Fuller Kearney has helped key UCLA’s success since helping bring back the rowing program in 2001. The Bruins sent their varsity eight crew as an at-large selection to the NCAA Championships in 2005, 2006 and 2007, before breaking through with a team bid to the national event in 2010. Knowing the commitment and effort needed to advance to the NCAA Championships, this year’s team looks to earn another appearance in the prestigious year-end races.

“Carolina is sitting in the stroke seat and stroked the second varsity at the end of the year last year,” Fuller Kearney said. “The thing I love about her is that she’s very lean, rows long, and I just know that she’s not going to ever cry uncle. She’s just so fierce and is going to give everything that she has. It’s a great quality for somebody to have in the stroke seat. Also, as a ballerina she has a natural grace and can feel a rhythm very well so she sets a nice, long pace up there in the stroke seat.”

While the bulk of UCLA’s roster lies in its freshmen and sophomore classes, the Bruins do return seven out of the eight rowers from last year’s varsity eight crew. “This year we’re pretty excited to be returning seven out of the eight rowers with the varsity eight,” Fuller Kearney said. “Last fall, we started off with a pretty young group, a lot of young walk-ons coming from the novice squad and some first-year rowers in that top group. So we really had to start with the basics and this year we’ve been able to work from a higher level from the first day. This is really showing in terms of their confidence and their rowing ability.”

Another sophomore, Natalie Pettee, will look to compete for a spot in the second varsity eight after rowing with the novice eight for much of her freshman campaign. “Natalie just started to learn how to row last year and again, not unlike Erin Wenzel, has just trained really hard,” Fuller Kearney said. “I’m not sure where she’ll end up but I know that she’s going to keep moving up. I’m super excited that she’s just a sophomore and we have so much more time to help her build because she’s all in. No matter what we’re doing, she’s giving everything whether it’s running, rowing, weight lifting or erging. She’s made a huge leap this year and it’s going to pay off for all of us.”

To begin, Jessica McGuire will be making a run at a seat in the varsity eight in 2012 after having rowed in the bow and six seats for the eight crew last year. McGuire, a junior and former walk-on from Chino, Calif., stroked the second varsity eight at the San Diego Crew Classic as a sophomore and at the NCAA Championships as a freshman.

Hillary Caldwell, a junior from Washington D.C., is looking to earn a spot with either the varsity eight or second varsity eight this spring. Caldwell rowed three seat in the varsity eight in every race (except the NCAA Championships, where she rowed five seat) during her freshman year and saw time with both the varsity eight and second varsity eight as a sophomore in 2011.

“I’m really excited to have Jessica back from illness related surgery last spring,” says Fuller Kearney. “She’s doing an excellent job and right now is making great strides technically. Her power is just getting better and better as well as her fitness, so that’s been fun to see.”

“Hillary is in that mix,” Fuller Kearney said. “She was in the varsity two years ago as a freshman and she’s had some struggles with fitness but she’s getting her form back. It’s really exciting to see her because when she’s fit and can go she withstands anything. She will just get into another zone and at the end of the piece I’ll wonder if she’s ok because she’s gone that deep. Right now she’s fighting for a seat in the varsity as well so I hope that turns out, because the more girls that are fighting for the varsity seats, the better everybody will be.”

After rowing in the varsity eight all of last season as a freshman, sophomore Kat Lauer will be counted on once again to contribute to the varsity eight crew this year. Lauer gained valuable experience last season, as she rowed in the five seat for the second half of the 2011 season and also saw time at the three seat against California. “Kat made the varsity as a freshman last year and is back stronger than ever,” Fuller Kearney said. “She’s so feisty and can switch gears into this ‘I will not lose mode.’ It’s really fun having her around.”

UCLA also has three freshmen looking to make an impact with the second varsity eight this season in Cathy Stolitzka, Allison Doran and Alex Caniglia. Stolitzka is a native of Los Altos, Calif. and last year served as the team captain for the Los Gatos Rowing Club. Doran hails from Folsom Calif. while Caniglia is from San Diego, Calif. and competed for San Diego Rowing Club.

Junior Britta Syverson also returns to the varsity eight crew after earning first-team All-Pac-10 and CRCA All-West Region honors in 2011. She rowed in the seven seat and also saw time in the stroke seat last season for the varsity eight. As a freshman in 2010, Syverson secured second-team Pocock All-America honors and second-team CRCA All-West Region acclaim. The native of Minneapolis rowed four seat in the varsity eight in each race as a freshman, helping the Bruins’ eight earn a ninth-place finish at NCAA Championships.

“We have three freshmen that are raising their games completely in Cathy, Allison and Alex,” Fuller Kearney said. “All three are fighting for seats in the second varsity and moving ahead of some people that were in that boat last year because they’ve come in, trained hard and are super fit. They’re also very coachable and they’re just moving the boat, whether it’s the pair, the four or the eight. We’re giving them a shot right now and hopefully we’ll have some nice young, competitive blood in there to keep everybody feisty and fighting for seats.”

“Britta is now a junior and a captain and coming off of the U-23 Rowing Championships in the women’s double,” Fuller Kearney said. “She is really fit, and really strong and very coachable. She is also a great leader in the boat and her high expectations are contagious. ”

After seeing time with both the varsity and second varsity crews as a freshman, sophomore Deanna Wong will look to make a similar contribution this upcoming spring. Wong saw time primarily in the bow seat with both crews in 2011.

Junior Alexa Farafontoff will be competing this spring for a spot in the varsity eight after seeing time with the second varsity eight in her first two years. Hailing from El Dorado Hills, Calif., Farafontoff rowed in the six and seven seats with the second varsity eight last year after rowing in the three and five seats her freshman year. Farafontoff also competed in two races with the varsity eight in 2011, rowing six seat in the Bruins’ win over LMU and four seat in the team’s win over San Diego State.

“Deanna spent a lot of time with the varsity eight last year and she’s a very powerful person for her size and a very strong competitor,” Fuller Kearney said. “She’s rowing right now in the bow seat and I don’t know where she’ll end up, but she’s going to be a really strong component whether it’s in the varsity or the second varsity. She’s just consistent and rows well under pressure so that’s another thing that I’m really looking for from all these athletes.”

“Alexa is looking to try and make her first varsity eight this year,” Fuller Kearney said. “She’s been in the second varsity her first two years and I’ve really seen her turn a corner this year in terms of her fitness. Also, she is learning how to translate her desire to be great into the discipline that is required to achieve that end. I’m hoping that she can stick with it as the intensity increases and make sure that her level continues to rise because she’s rowing really well.”

In the varsity four group, the Bruins will be looking to various rowers to compete for spots in the boat. Juniors Alexis McPhee, Erica Lockard, Tamar Schaap and Emily McLaughlin, and sophomores Victoria Babson, Taylor Veit, Samantha Upton and Audrey Calandra will all be looking to earn places in the four boats. McPhee and Schaap rowed in the varsity four crew throughout their sophomore seasons while Lockard and McLaughlin rowed with the eight and second eight respectively. Veit and Upton rowed with the novice eight during their freshman campaigns while Calandra saw time with the novice eight towards the end of last season.

Mariko Snyder, a junior from Westlake Village, Calif., rowed in the varsity eight throughout her sophomore year and will once again look to earn a spot on the varsity eight this year. Snyder entered the program as a walk-on in the fall of 2009 and finished her freshman year rowing five seat in the novice eight. “Mariko is just so strong. She is really taking her game to a whole new level,” Fuller Kearney said. “As a walk-on she was one of the rowers that was a bit raw last year but has stepped up and is rowing very well and very long for her height. Her power just continues to improve and I think she’s a great leader on and off the water for the team.”

“In the fours group, it’s incredible because we basically have the whole four from last year returning at various times,” Fuller Kearney said. “We’re looking for Alexis, Erica, Tamar, which is the same group from last year, to be joined by Victoria, Emily, Taylor, Sam and Audrey Calandra who are rounding out a very, very strong fours group. If somebody had told me that that would be the fours group at the beginning of the year I would be so excited because they were fast last year and now that we have even more depth. They’re getting pushed every day by a second four that’s very competitive. We don’t know what the lineup is going to be in there yet. I expect them to be very quick again and quite competitive across the nation.”

Like Snyder, sophomore Erin Wenzel will be competing for a spot in the varsity eight this season after rowing with the second varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight crews as a freshman. Wenzel rowed five seat in the Bruins’ victories over California and Stanford in the novice eight last year and led UCLA to a first-place finish in the varsity four on day one of the San Diego Crew Classic.

The Bruins’ freshman class will look to round out the novice eight crew as Christine Bragg, Olivia Taylor, Kendal Mitchell, Victoria Vander Poel, Kristy Kayatta, Christina Nelson and Sarah Dierksen are each poised to lead the novice eight group this year. Bragg and Taylor are natives of Darien, Conn., where they were both members of the Connecticut Boat Club that won the gold medal at the 2010 U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships. Nelson comes from Thousand Oaks, Calif and was a multi-sport athlete competing with Marina Aquatic Center as a junior rower. Mitchell hails from San Mateo, Calif. and was a three-time letterwinner in rowing at St. Ignatius College Prep while Vander Poel, Kayatta and Dierksen are all walk-ons looking to make a big impact in the spring.

“Erin was in the novice and the second varsity last year as a first-year rower and she really came back so fit from the summer this year,” Fuller Kearney said. “She just decided that this is going to be the year that she steps up into the varsity and she’s a fantastic athlete and has a great feel for the boat. I can always trust that she’s going to work, and that’s a great attitude to have in the varsity eight.” Junior Kirstin Snook and sophomore Nicole Sung-Jereczek will also look to compete for a seat in the varsity eight this season. Snook rowed two seat with the varsity eight against USC and at the Pac10 Championships last season while Sung-Jereczek rowed in the varsity eight throughout her entire freshman season.

“The novice eight is still pretty stacked,” Fuller Kearney said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the top novices actually made their way into the fours mix by the NCAA Championships. I think that this is for sure our fastest novice eight ever because we’ve been able to, with the depth that we have, keep our top freshmen in the novice eight. I know I said that three have moved up, but a vast majority of the people that we recruited from top programs around the country like Christine, Olivia and Kendal are still rowing in the novice eight. Coach Price is having a great time on the water every day watching such a fired up and excited group. Thankfully those girls are being pushed by the second novice eight, which is also strong. We have an incredible group of walk-ons this year that are really getting better every day like Victoria, Kristy and Sarah. These girls are putting numbers up on the ERG machine that are phenomenal and now we’re just working hard to get their rowing technique up to speed so they can compete with the more experience rowers. Once they get that, the sky’s the limit.”

“It’s going to be a tough fight,” Fuller Kearney said. “Kirstin rowed a lot with the varsity eight last year as did Nicole and right now they’re really fighting hard for that last port seat. Both are looking very strong and both are extremely feisty and very fit athletes so it’s a good problem to have. I don’t know that either of them will row every race in the varsity eight this year. We’re probably going to switch it up and see who’s bringing the most on race day and who can handle the pressure the best.” Senior Anastasia Alexander has rowed on the Bruins’ varsity eight the last three seasons and is expected to contribute in that boat again this spring. In 2011, she rowed with both the varsity and second varsity eights, seeing time at the bow, seven and three seats. She also rowed bow seat in the eight in each of UCLA’s races in 2010, helping the varsity eight secure a fourth-place finish at the Pac-10 Championships and a ninth-place finish at the year-end NCAA Championships.

Fuller Kearney offered this final thought as the Bruins head into their spring season:

“Anastasia, who’s our only senior this year in that boat, is really having her best year ever,” Fuller Kearney said. “She’s struggled with illness or injury her first three years here but has still put together a pretty successful career. I’m excited about her being able being healthy, fit and getting back to great form this year.”

“I’m really excited with the depth of the team this year. The attitude is awesome and the coaching staff is doing an amazing job. Justin, Luke and I are working daily to help the athletes work towards their potential and raising the level of discipline and intensity is the key for this young team. We expect, as always, the Pac-12 competition will be fierce. It’s going to be a tough conference. It gives us a lot of great opportunities to race against some of the fastest boats in the country. We have to be able to race, stroke for stroke, with the best. That’s what being a champion is about. Our goal has always been to be able to race on any given day with any program in the country in any boat. Everybody’s really excited and it’s a positive environment and it looks to be a great season.”

The Bruins’ second varsity eight will be mostly compiled of underclassmen, but are poised to have a great season on the water. “On the second varsity eight, again it’s a young crowd but they’re rowing really well and are quite

The UCLA Boathouse, surrounded by Marina del Rey and Ballona Creek, is located just 11 miles south of UCLA. On the north side of the boathouse, the marina serves as both a practice site and a racing venue for fall regattas. On the south side, Ballona Creek serves as UCLA’s own 2000m race course. The UCLA women’s rowing team also trains on campus at both Drake Stadium and at the Acosta Strength and Conditioning Facility. For ergometer workouts, the Bruins have 40 ergometers overlooking Drake Stadium and UCLA’s beautiful North campus.

FULLER KEARNEY HEAD COACH 11th season Alma Mater: UC Santa Barbara ’90 Entering her 11th season at the helm of the UCLA women’s rowing program in 2011-12, Amy Fuller Kearney has established the Bruins as a national competitor. After having made a successful transition from a club team to a varsity program in 2001-2002, UCLA earned its first-ever team bid to the NCAA Championships in May 2010, securing a 12th place finish at the national event that season. Additionally, the Bruins sent a varsity eight crew as an at-large selection to the NCAA Championships in three consecutive seasons (2005-07). The eight’s highest finish in that three-year span was a 12th place finish in 2006. UCLA’s eight finished ninth at the 2010 NCAA Championships, placing higher than any Pac-12 program at the national competition. This season, Fuller Kearney looks to lead the Bruins back to the NCAA Championships for the second time in three seasons. Fuller Kearney led the Bruins’varsity and second varsity eights to the Pac-10 Championship Grand Final from 2004 through 2007. In 2010, UCLA’s varsity eight finished fourth at the Pac-10 Championships, while the program’s varsity four earned a bronze-medal finish at the conference event. That year, the Bruins secured a fifth-place team finish at the Pac-10 Championships. UCLA’s second varsity eight won the silver medal in 2005 and 2006 at the Pac-10 Championships. The past four seasons, Fuller Kearney has guided UCLA to a consistent place in the national rankings. The Bruins secured a ranking as high as No. 11 in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches’Association (CRCA)/US Rowing poll in 2010, as high as No. 13 in 2008 and 2009 and No. 17 in 2011. In 2011, the Bruins kicked off the spring season with back-to-back victories over Loyola Marymount and San Diego State. UCLA’s novice eight then earned consecutive victories over Pac-12 foes California and Stanford. The Bruins varsity eight earned a second place finish at the San Diego Crew Classic while the varsity four and novice eight squads took home second place as well. At the Virginia Invitational, UCLA’s second varsity eight earned a victory over Texas while the varsity four defeated the Clemson Tigers on the final day of competition. After the team finished the season with a sixth place finish at the Pac-12 Championships, UCLA’s Britta Syverson secured CRCA All-West Region honors for the second straight year. In 2010, UCLA registered impressive dual-meet victories against Loyola Marymount and San Diego State to open the spring season. UCLA’s varsity eight finished third on consecutive days, including in Sunday’s Grand Final, at the San Diego Crew Classic, while the team’s open eight crew earned two first-place finishes. The Bruins varsity eight defeated Clemson and Notre Dame at the SoCal Challenge, before cruising past Oregon State and San Diego the next week in Dexter Lake, Ore. UCLA’s sixth-place team finish at Pac-10 Championships was highlighted by a bronze medal-winning performance from the varsity four. Six Pac-10 teams earned berths to the NCAA Championships, as UCLA secured its first team berth in program history.

The first eight raced to a top-16 ranking and an at-large invite to the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history. The second eight made history, bringing home a silver medal from the Pac-10 Championships, a first at UCLA since rowing was elevated to NCAA varsity status. Named UCLA rowing’s head coach on July 2, 2001 – the sport’s inaugural NCAA season – Fuller Kearney came to Westwood after having served one year as assistant coach for the Stanford women’s crew program (2000-01). At Stanford, she guided the Cardinal to its first top-20 national ranking in the program’s NCAA history.

At the NCAA Championships, UCLA varsity eight finished third in its first-day elimination heat, allowing the crew to advance to Saturday’s semifinal. After a fifth-place finish in the semifinal, the varsity eight closed its season with a third-place finish in the Petite Final. UCLA’s second varsity eight and varsity four crews advanced to the Third Final, finishing third and second, respectively. Following the NCAA Championships, UCLA’s Alexandra Bolt (first team) and Britta Syverson (second team) secured All-America honors, as announced by the CRCA.

Prior to serving as assistant coach at Stanford, Fuller Kearney was an assistant coach at San Diego State for two years (1998-2000). She worked with the Aztecs while training for the 2000 Olympics with the U.S. National Team. Fuller Kearney has also spent time working as an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga (1996-98) and for the U.S. National Team (1997).

In 2009, the Bruins opened the season with strong dual-meet wins against local opponents Loyola Marymount and San Diego State. UCLA’s varsity eight won races on consecutive days against No. 12 Ohio State and No. 13 Clemson, respectively, at the Pac-10 Challenge. The Bruins finished strong at the San Diego Crew Classic, as the first eight raced to a first-place finish in the Petite Final, while the second eight cruised to a third-place finish. On day two of the Lake Natoma Challenge, UCLA’s first eight won its heat against Minnesota and Tennessee. At the season-culminating Pac-10 Championships, the varsity eight won the Petite Final while the second eight finished in second place.

From 1993-96, Fuller Kearney served as a motivational speaker for Champion International, a U.S. Rowing sponsor. She began her coaching career at UC Santa Barbara, her alma mater. From 199091, she led the women’s novice program. Two years later, from 1992-93, she was the head coach of the women’s team. Fuller Kearney is a three-time Olympian and former World Record holder. Her competitiveness has given her an assortment of national and international experience. In 1993, she earned U.S. Rowing Female Athlete of the Year honors. Two years later, Fuller Kearney was a finalist for the Sullivan Award, presented annually to the nation’s top amateur athlete. She spent the fall and winter of 1995 competing with the America’s Cup Syndicate, America 3. She was a member of the first ever all-women’s team to challenge for the America’s Cup.

At season’s end, Vanessa Teff secured CRCA All-West Region honors and All-Pac-10 accolades for a school-record fourth consecutive season. In addition, five Bruins were honored as CRCA National Scholar-Athlete selections. Three of those student-athletes were also selected to the Pac-10 AllAcademic team. In 2008, UCLA opened its spring campaign with dominating dual-meet victories over Loyola Marymount and San Diego State. The Bruins’first eight also claimed dual-meet wins over the University of Victoria and the University of Central Florida. The second eight rowed to wins over Saint Mary’s College’s first eight and the University of Central Florida. Both crews had strong performances at the San Diego Crew Classic. The first eight placed fifth overall in the invitation-only Jessop-Whittier Cup while the second eight finished sixth in the race for the Hungness Trophy. Both eights finished their seasons with wins in the Petite Final at the Pac-10 Championships.

As a starboard aft grinder, Fuller Kearney used her strength and endurance to earn a starting spot among the world’s top female sailors. In the spring and summer, Fuller Kearney again turned her focus to rowing and helped the women’s eight to a World Championship in Tampere, Finland. Fuller Kearney earned trips to the Olympics in 1992, 1996, and 2000. In 1992, she brought home a silver medal in the Women’s 4-. In 1996 and 2000, she placed in the top 6 in the Women’s 8+. Additionally, Fuller Kearney has competed in eight World Championships, earning one gold medal (1995) and six silver medals. An extension of Fuller Kearney’s international experience includes the Goodwill Games, the Lucerne International Regatta, and the Henley Royal Regatta. At the 1994 Goodwill Games, her Women’s 8+ team captured the bronze. Competing at the Lucerne International Regatta (1991, 1994-96 and 1998), she brought home five medals – three gold, one silver, and one bronze. At the 1998 Henley Royal Regatta, Fuller Kearney added another gold medal.

Individual team members were honored with a series of All-America, All-Region and All-Pac-10 athletic and academic honors. For the third consecutive year, Vanessa Teff earned Pocock All-America honors, CRCA All-West Region accolades and All-Pac-10 honors. Eight Bruins were named All-Pac-10 Academic selections. Under the guidance of Fuller Kearney in 2007, UCLA’s varsity eight crew advanced to the NCAA Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn., finishing 14th overall. Fuller Kearney guided UCLA to firstplace finishes in back-to-back dual meets against Loyola Marymount and San Diego State to open the season. In the fourth weekend of the season, the Bruins performed well at the San Diego Crew Classic, placing its varsity crews fourth and third, respectively, in the grand finals. Midway through the season, UCLA’s second varsity raced past USC in the annual dual meet between both crosstown rivals. In the season-culminating Pac-10 Championships, UCLA finished fourth overall.

Fuller Kearney continued her rowing success at the C.R.A.S.H. B Sprints. She was the 2000 and 2001 World Record holder on the rowing ergometer and placed first for open women. On the national level, Fuller Kearney rowed for the U.S. National Team for 11 years (1989, 1991-2000). During this era, she recorded 12 gold medals, two silver and one bronze. In October 2009, Fuller Kearney was selected for induction to the National Rowing Hall of Fame. She was inducted on March 20, 2010, in Mystic Seaport, Conn. Fuller Kearney was named one of 18 inductees in the 2010 Hall of Fame Class.

Fuller Kearney’s team earned recognition at season’s end, as two senior rowers (Elizabeth Lee and Leach Wachtel) earned CRCA National Scholar-Athlete honors, and two others were named CRCA All-West Region selections (Vanessa Teff and Lynn Hancock). Teff earned first-team Pocock All-America honors in addition to capturing All-Pac-10 team accolades. A capable group both on the water and in the classroom, 10 Bruins gained Pac-10 All-Academic honors.

As a sophomore at UC Santa Barbara, Fuller Kearney discovered a passion for rowing. She later earned one gold medal and one bronze medal on the collegiate national level. In 1990, she was honored with the school’s Associated Students Athlete of the Year Award. In 2006, Fuller Kearney was an inaugural inductee into the UC Santa Barbara Recreational Sports Hall of Fame.

In 2006, the first eight raced to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championships. UCLA began the 2006 spring season earning first-place dual-meet finishes against Loyola Marymount, UC Irvine and Minnesota before posting a sixth-place finish at Pac-10 Championships in May. At the San Diego Crew Classic, UCLA advanced to the Grand Final in all three events and finished fifth in the varsity eight race. The Bruins finished first in all four events at the Miller Cup, and later capped their season with a strong performance at the NCAA Championships.

A Westlake Village, Calif., native who prepped at Westlake High School, Fuller Kearney graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. She earned her masters degree in education from University of Tennessee, Chattanooga in 1998. Fuller Kearney has also been certified by the American College of Sports Medicine as a Health Fitness Instructor and is a U.S. Rowing certified coach. She resides in Newhall, Calif., with her husband, Joe, and daughter, Shannon.

A native of Philadelphia, Cunningham rowed for one season at Monsignor Bonner High, during which he captured the Philadelphia City Championship. Cunningham resides in Marina del Rey, Calif.

ASSISTANT COACH 1st season Alma Mater: Brown ’01 Luke Cunningham begins his first season as an assistant coach for the UCLA women’s rowing team in 2011-2012. Cunningham will be primarily responsible for coaching the fours. Additionally, he will assist in all aspects of the program, including recruiting, training and administration. Cunningham brings a variety of rowing experience to UCLA. Since 2004, he has served as an assistant coach for the Columbia University men’s rowing team, helping their heavyweight crews establish their status as an East Coast power. In addition, he has worked as a rigger and West Coast representative of Resolute Racing, gaining expertise in the rigging of elite racing shells. A two-time All-Ivy League selection at Brown, Cunningham rowed for the varsity heavyweight eight, leading the crew to a silver medal in 1999 at the Eastern Sprints and to the gold medal in 2000. Brown’s varsity eight in 2000 also secured the gold medal at the Henley Royal Regatta.

Price led Notre Dame to similar success in 2008-09. That year, he recruited the largest group of freshman/novice athletes in team history and coached three novice eights. Price’s novice rowers showcased their depth at the 2009 ACRA Regatta, leading the Fighting Irish to a second place finish in the overall team points competition. The novice lightweight four won the event for the second consecutive year, the first novice eight finished in third place and the second novice eight finished second.

ASSISTANT COACH 3rd season Alma Mater: UCLA ’06 Justin Price begins his third season as an assistant coach for the UCLA women’s rowing team in 2011-12.

Price spent four years (2003-06) rowing in UCLA’s men’s program. As a Bruin oarsman, he stroked the novice eight as a freshman and rowed in the varsity eight his final three seasons. In 2006, Price earned the bronze medal rowing in the men’s varsity four at the Pac-10 Championships. He received the Coach’s Award for his performance and leadership in 2004-05. In addition, Price was a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic Team selection - first team (2005, 2006) and honorable mention (2004).

Price rowed for the UCLA men’s team before graduating in 2006. Prior to arriving at UCLA in the summer of 2009, he spent the three seasons as an assistant coach with the men’s rowing program at the University of Notre Dame. Price’s primary responsibilities include identification, development and coaching of all walk-on athletes. Price also coordinates recruiting efforts for the program’s non-rowing athletes. Off the water duties include the management and maintenance of equipment and gear.

Price graduated from UCLA in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He earned his law degree (J.D.) from the University of Notre Dame in 2009.

In 2010, Price helped lead the novice crew to multiple victories. After opening the spring season with convincing dual-meet wins over local foes Loyola Marymount and San Diego State, the novice eight earned a second-place finish in the Grand Final of the San Diego Crew Classic. The novice eight defeated Notre Dame in the afternoon portion of the SoCal Challenge and bested crosstown rival USC in the annual dual-meet showdown. Through the Years... Women’s rowing first started at UCLA in 1970 from a support group for the men’s program known as “Shell and Oar.” Three years later, in 1973, Larry Daugherty was named the first head coach of UCLA women’s rowing. The women still struggled for intercollegiate status, but they eventually won in 1974 through the determination of the athletes and the support of then ViceChancellor Norman P. Miller. In 1975, just one year after the inception of the sport into the collegiate ranks, UCLA won the National Championships in the lightweight four. In 1976, the Miller Cup Invitational was established in honor of Dr. Miller for his commitment to the program. That same year, UCLA won its first conference championship in the Pac-8, and the varsity eight won the Western Sprints Championships. Under Daugherty, the Bruins also won the NWRA Southwest Regional Championships in 1977, 1980, and 1982. In the mid 80’s, UCLA women’s rowing reappeared in the national spotlight. In 1984, under coach Jean Reilly, the Bruins

were national champions in the varsity four and lightweight four, and in 1985, they repeated as national champions in the varsity four. In the Pac-10 conference, UCLA holds two team titles from 1990 and 1991. The Bruins were the varsity four champions in 1984 and both the varsity eight and second varsity eight champions in 1990 and 1991. At the end of the 1991 season, women’s rowing was released by the UCLA Athletic Department and picked up the following year by UCLA Recreation. UCLA announced on Feb. 9, 2001 that it would once again sponsor rowing as an intercollegiate sport, active for the 2001-02 season. Now under the NCAA, UCLA women’s rowing is in its eighth season as a scholarship sport. The Bruins have regrouped under head coach Amy Fuller Kearney. She has already reestablished an alumni base and strengthened old ties and traditions, as well as introducing some new ones into the program.

Pac-12 Conference The Conference of Champions Built on a firm foundation of academic excellence and superior athletic performance, the Conference ushers in a new era with the additions of the University of Colorado and University of Utah, officially becoming the Pac-12 Conference on July 1, 2011. The Pac-12 rises above the rest, upholding its tradition as the “Conference of Champions” ®, claiming an incredible 180 NCAA team titles over the past two decades, including nine in 2010-11, averaging nearly nine championships per academic year. Even more impressive has been the breadth of the Pac-12’s success, with championships coming in 27 different men’s and women’s sports. The Pac-12 has led the nation in NCAA Championships in 45 of the last 51 years and finished second five times. Spanning nearly a century of outstanding athletics achievements, the Pac-12 was the first conference to reach 400 championships in 2010-11. With the inclusion of CU and UU, league teams have captured 442 NCAA titles (302 men’s, 140 women’s), outdistancing the next closest conference by nearly 200. The Conference’s reputation is further proven in the annual Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup competition, the prestigious award that honors the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country. STANFORD continued its remarkable run and won its unprecedented 17thconsecutive Directors’ Cup in 2010-11. Six of the top 25 Division I programs were Pac-12 member institutions: No. 1 STANFORD, No. 3 CALIFORNIA, No. 11 UCLA, No. 14 USC, No. 16 ARIZONA and No. 21 WASHINGTON. With two teams in the top five, it was the most of any conference. The 2010-11 campaign was marked by the 25-year anniversary of women’s sports in the Pac-10, with year-long focus on the milestone. And after commissioner Larry Scott made history

at the end of his first year with the announcement of the expansion of the Conference to include the University of Colorado and the University of Utah, he put the Conference on the forefront, announcing a landmark television deal, which is set to go into affect in 2012-13, and established a Pac-12 Football Championship game in 2011. In 2010-11, the then-Pac-10 led the country with nine NCAA titles, with men’s and women’s programs sharing the wealth as the Conference claimed five NCAA women’s titles and four men’s crowns. Claiming titles in softball (ARIZONA STATE), women’s indoor track & field (OREGON), and women’s golf (UCLA), the Pac-10 also had runners-up in 10 NCAA Championship events: women’s volleyball (CALIFORNIA), women’s soccer (STANFORD), women’s gymnastics (UCLA), women’s rowing (STANFORD), women’s tennis (STANFORD), and women’s track & field (OREGON). It was an all-Pac-10 final in men’s and women’s water polo, as well. Overall, the Conference had 32 teams finish in the top four at 18 NCAA Championship events. Participation in the postseason was a common occurrence for the Pac-10 in 2010-11. Of the 22 sports sponsored by the Conference, 16 witnessed at least half its teams participating in NCAA or other postseason action. The men sent 66 of a possible 91 teams into the postseason (65.9 percent), while the women sent 69 of a possible 99 teams (69.7 percent). The Conference swept two men’s and women’s sports, capturing national championships in swimming & diving and water polo. CALIFORNIA took home both swimming & diving crowns. In water polo, USC was the top men’s teams and the STANFORD women were national champs. With the additions of Colorado and Utah, Pac-12 members have won 302 NCAA team championships on the men’s side,

89 more than the next closest conference. Men’s NCAA crowns have come at a phenomenal rate for the Pac-12 - 16 basketball titles by six schools (more than any other conference), 52 tennis titles, 44 outdoor track & field crowns, and 26 baseball titles. Pac-12 members have won 25 of 42 NCAA titles in volleyball, 37 of 42 in water polo, and 22 in swimming & diving national championships. Individually, the Conference has produced an impressive number of NCAA men’s individual champions, as well, boasting 2,019 individual crowns.

A champion of public universities, Chancellor Block has set four major priorities for UCLA during his administration: academic excellence, diversity, civic engagement and financial security. He has called for UCLA to deepen its engagement with the Los Angeles region and to increase access for students from underrepresented populations. Chancellor Block holds UCLA faculty appointments in psychiatry and bio-behavioral sciences in the David Geffen School of Medicine and in physiological science in the College of Letters and Science. CHANCELLOR • 5th Year Alma Mater: Stanford ’70 Chancellor Block and his wife, Carol, have two adult children. The Blocks are avid Bruin fans and attend the competitions of various Bruin athletic programs.

Previously, he served as vice president and provost of the University of Virginia. He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stanford University and a master’s and Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Oregon. In Guerrero’s nine years as Athletic Director, he has clearly established a pattern of “image and substance” that few in his profession can match. UCLA stands as the No. 1 University in the nation for NCAA team championships (108) won, a number that continues to grow under his direction. In those nine years, UCLA teams have won 22 NCAA team titles (the highest total in the nation in that span) in 12 different sports, finished second 18 times and have had an additional 35 Top Five finishes (73 total). A staggering 176 teams (of 213 possible) have qualified for NCAA post-season competition and the football team has appeared in eight bowl games. The program has also won 47 conference championships in 15 different sports, produced over 460 AllAmericans and featured four Honda Award winners, including the 2003-04 Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. Furthermore, during the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing,China, 39 Bruins participated as athletes or coaches, representing the United States and nine other nations. They won 15 medals, including four gold. In the last nine years, UCLA has fi nished second three times (2007-08, 200607 and 2005-06), third twice (2004-05 and 2003-04), fourth (2009-10), sixth (2002-03), 11th (2010-11) and 16th (2008-09) in the race for the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. GUERRERO Alma Mater: UCLA ’74 in women’s golf and women’s volleyball, placed second in women’s gymnastics and men’s water polo, third in women’s water polo, women’s tennis (tied) and men’s soccer (tied), fifth (tied) in men’s golf, ninth (tied) in men’s tennis and women’s soccer, 17th (tied) in men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, softball and women’s soccer and 20th in women’s swimming. Guerrero came to UCLA in 2002 from UC Irvine, where he had served as UCI’s fifth Director of Athletics for 10 years. Prior to arriving at UC Irvine, he was the Athletic Director for fi ve years at Cal State Dominguez Hills (1988-92). He received his Bachelor’s degree from UCLA in 1974 and played second base in the Bruin baseball program for four years. Guerrero, born on November 10, 1951 in Tucson, AZ, was raised in Wilmington, CA. He is married to the former Anne Marie Aniello and they have two grown daughters: Jenna and Katie.

Senior associate athletic director Bob Field has served as a member of UCLA’s athletic administration since January 2001.

Field oversees men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s track and field and women’s rowing and serves as an aide to Dan Guerrero in all football matters. He also oversees housing, parking, training table, video services, agent relations and coaches’ development. Prior to his switch to administration, Field spent 22 seasons as an assistant coach with the UCLA football team. He was the assistant head coach during his final five seasons (1996-2000) and served as defensive coordinator for 16 seasons (1982-95 and 1999-2000) while tutoring outside linebackers, place kickers and defensive backs at various times in his career. Field has been at UCLA since 1978, with the exception of the 1980 football season. Over the years, he has tutored some of the top athletes in school history and crafted numerous defenses ranked in the top 20 in various categories. He began his coaching career under the legendary Bear Bryant at Alabama (1971-72) and moved to Mississippi State in 1973. During his five-year tenure at Mississippi State, Field coached the secondary and served as defensive coordinator in his final four seasons with the Bulldogs.

Wooden Academy: Teamwork, Leadership and Character The Wooden Academy is a comprehensive leadership development program designed to educate and support the standards of leadership for Bruin student-athletes. The pillars of the Wooden Academy are teamwork, leadership and character. The program is named after legendary Coach John Wooden, and strives to teach the values and principles of his Pyramid of Success.
