record of 192-48 (.800) and has gone 150-20 (.882) in the last five seasons (2017-21). In 2017, the Bruins picked up a lot of firsts, but none were larger than knocking off crosstown rival No. 1 USC in the semifinals of the Pac-12 Championship. UCLA also posted its first-ever win over then-No. 2 Florida State, 3-2, in the final game of the Inaugural East Meets West Challenge, hosted by UCLA at legendary Manhattan Beach Pier in Manhattan Beach, Calif. Along the way, UCLA finished with a then-school-record 30 wins compared to just six defeats and won a then-school-record 24 consecutive duals, finishing second at the Pac-12 Championship.

In 2016, the Bruins finished third at the inaugural NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala. UCLA ended the season with a 22-8 overall record, including going 3-2 at NCAA’s, defeating 8th-seeded Stetson (3-2), 3rd-seeded Pepperdine (3-2) and 5thseeded Hawai’i (3-0). The Bruins fell in the elimination bracket to No. 1 Florida State (3-1). Beach volleyball saw several changes in 2015, when UCLA announced that Coach Metzger would leave his duties as assistant indoor coach to focus solely on beach. In addition, the Pac-12 Conference announced during the summer of 2015 that beach volleyball would become a Pac-12 sponsored sport effective the 2016 season. Additionally, the NCAA officially sponsored its first national championship in 2016.

Stein Metzger, the 2017 and 2018 Pac-12 Coach of the Year and the 2017 and 2018 USMC/ AVCA National Coach of the Year, enters his 10th season as the UCLA Beach Volleyball Head Coach in 2022 after guiding UCLA to back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2018 (40-4) and in 2019 (35-3). He also led UCLA to a 13-2 mark in a shortened 2020 campaign with the Bruins ranked No. 2 in the final AVCA poll of the year and two wins over USC early in the year. This past season, he guided UCLA back to the NCAA Championship match for the third straight year in 2021, finishing the year with an overall record of 32-5.

The Pac-12’s adoption of beach volleyball made it the league’s 23rd sport and the first major conference to sponsor beach volleyball. Eight member institutions currently sponsor beach volleyball, well above the conference threshold of six. In a related decision, beach

The Bruins’ three losses in 2019 were all to USC by a score of 3-2. But seeded No. 2 for the NCAA Championship after the Trojans won the Pac-12 Championship, UCLA used it as fuel to the fire and defeated top-seeded USC in the NCAA title match, 3-0, without dropping a single set. The Bruins had four All-Americans for the first time in school history in 2019 as Megan and Nicole McNamara from court one and Sarah Sponcil and Lily Justine from court two were all honored by the AVCA. Additionally, the McNamara twins became the first tandem in the history of the NCAA to earn first team All-America honors all four years.

Metzger completed his third season with the UCLA women’s indoor volleyball staff in 2014, his second as an assistant coach, while serving as a volunteer coach in 2012.

In 2004, Metzger earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic Beach Volleyball team, finishing in fifth with partner Dax Holdren. A year prior, the duo won the silver medal at the 2003 Beach Volleyball World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Metzger also has two international titles to his credit with Wong in 2001 and ‘02, as well as a Bronze medal at the ‘01 Goodwill Games.

Metzger has guided UCLA Beach Volleyball since its inaugural season in the spring of 2013. The Bruins have been ranked in the Top 10 throughout each of their first seven campaigns. Debuting the sand team competitively just two months after the sport was added to UCLA’s athletic program, Metzger guided Kelly Reeves to the program’s first sand All-America award in 2013, while two pairs (Reeves and Meg Norton and Zoë Nightingale and Becca Strehlow) each made the AVCA National Championships.

In addition to his collegiate coaching accolades, Metzger has trained U.S., French and Israeli National Beach teams. He has also coached with the USA Volleyball Elite Development Program. A 1996 graduate of UCLA with a degree in environmental studies, Metzger was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009. MARIA CLARA

SALGADO Volunteer Assistant Coach First Season

UCLA head women’s beach volleyball coach Stein Metzger announced the hiring of beach volleyball standout Maria Clara Salgado as the Bruins’ volunteer assistant coach. She enters her first season to the post in 2022. “We are thrilled to welcome Maria Clara into the UCLA beach volleyball family,” Metzger said. “Her record as a top international player for close to two decades speaks for itself. That experience, coupled with the knowledge from working with the world’s top professional beach volleyball coaches, will have an immeasurable impact on our program. We particularly value Maria’s character which emulates the true Bruin values of respect, integrity and excellence. She is talented, yet humble, and will be a wonderful role model and mentor for our student-athletes.”

Salgado, who is an active player on the AVP, is a highly decorated player on the international scene. While this is her first collegiate post, she comes from a beach volleyball dynasty and was coached by her mother, the legendary former indoor volleyball and beach volleyball player Isabel Salgado, in the early years of her career. Isabel is a two-time Olympian, who played for Brazil on the indoor team in Moscow in 1980 and Los Angeles in 1984. Her brother, Pedro Solberg, also plays professionally and represented Brazil in beach volleyball at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Solberg has won 22 career titles and was part of the FIVB Team of the Year in 2008 with Harley Marques. He was named the FIVB’s Best Blocker in 2013. The Salgado’s beach volleyball history started 25-plus years ago when Isabel played in the first beach volleyball international tournaments in the early 1990s. Isabel was a star in Brazil in the 1980s in indoor volleyball and was one of the pioneers of beach volleyball in the country, playing with Olympic champion Jackie Silva in the early days of the sport. Salgado, who started playing professionally in Rio de Janeiro at the age of 17, teamed with Shaylyn Bede to win the inaugural U-21 world title in 2001 at Le Lavandou, France. She won bronze at the 2002 U-21 World Championship with Talita Antunes in Catania, Italy, and would later win bronze with her sister, Carolina Salgado, at the 2003 U-21 World Championship in Saint Quay Portrieux, France Late in her career, Isabel played with her daughters in the Brazilian Tour. When Isabel retired, the Salgado sisters joined forces and had her as their coach for years. The Salgado sisters stayed together from 2003 to 2015. When the sand had settled, they had played together in 135 tournaments in World Tour history, which ranks second all-time behind Finland’s sister duo of Emilia and Erika Nystrom (157). The Brazilians collected 17 World Tour medals, including two golds, and 39 more medals on the Brazilian National Tour with six tournament victories on their home sand. The highlight of their pairing was a Grand Slam triumph in 2013 when they took down future Olympic and world champions Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst of Germany, in Moscow. Salgado had six podiums finishes in 2013, leading to her best FIVB World Ranking of second. In 2016, Salgado took a break to have her first son, Joaquim, with her husband and UCLA alum, Jeremy Casebeer. Casebeer served as the Bruins’ volunteer assistant coach during the 2020 season. Salgado was named the AVP Newcomer of the Year in 2017 and also was named the FIVB Best Server in 2008 and 2009. She has had 28 semifinal appearances in the FIVB in her career.

AVCA Top Flight Award Introduced in 2018, this awards program was designed to recognize excellence in collegiate beach volleyball from all over the country and across all flights. In order for a pair to be eligible for the award, the two student-athletes must compete in at least 15 matches together and at a specific flight number.

Megan and Nicole McNamara are the only pair in NCAA history to be named four-time All-Americans.

Volleyball Magazine Preseason All-Americans 2020

VolleyMob All-Americans

Should that pair win at least 75% of their matches – regardless of the overall result of the dual – those athletes will achieve “Top Flight” status.

2018 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP

#116 GULF SHORES, Ala. – The top-seeded UCLA beach volleyball team made history Sunday, winning the first NCAA Championship in program history. UCLA defeated fourth-seeded Florida State, 3-1, avenging a Friday loss to the Seminoles that put the Bruins one loss away from elimination. They proceeded to win four matches in two days, capped by Sunday’s triumph, which gave UCLA its 116th overall NCAA Championship. The Bruins won 35 of its final 36 matches to complete their historic season with a 40-4 overall record. The 40 wins represent a single-season NCAA record, previously set by USC last year (38). The Seminoles dropped to 33-7. The win marked UCLA’s first over Florida State in an NCAA Championship setting, with the Bruins having been eliminated by the Seminoles in 2016 and 2017. Returning to the flight format used throughout the regular season, pairs 4 and 5 took to the sand first. In their first action since Saturday’s semifinal, the Seminoles got off to a hot start, claiming each first set. The Bruins would not go quietly, however, as each tandem recovered to force a first-to-15 third set. The 2018 NCAA Champions won UCLA’s 116th NCAA title with a 3-1 victory over Florida State.

UCLA’s No. 5 pair of Izzy Carey and Megan Muret posted a dramatic 24-22 second-set victory and rode its newfound momentum to a 17-21, 24-22, 15-8 win over Madison Fitzpatrick and Francesca Goncalves to get the Bruins on the board first. The Florida State duo of Molly McBain-Brooke Kuhlman would soon make it a best-of-three affair, though, pulling the Seminoles even with a 21-15, 19-21, 15-12 defeat of Elise Zappia-Mac May in a battle of No. 4 pairs. The top three courts came out determined in the second flight, sweeping the first sets to put the Bruins on the brink of history. UCLA’s Court 3 team of Zana Muno and Savvy Simo grabbed their opportunity with a convincing

win over Macy Jerger-Sara Putt, 21-19, 21-9, to inch the Bruins one step closer. With both Courts 1 and 2 on match point, the duo of Sarah Sponcil-Lily Justine played the part of hero. The second-court pair knocked off Katie Horton-Hailey Luke of the Seminoles, 21-18, 21-19, setting off a storming of the court in celebration. The pairs of Nicole McNamara-Megan McNamara (Court 1) and Izzy Carey-Megan Muret (Court 5) were selected to the All-Tournament Team.
