CROSS COUNTRY COACHES

MIKE MAYNARD Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Fifth Year Azusa Pacifc, 1986

Mike Maynard enters his fifth season at UCLA and his second as the Director of Track and Field/Cross Country. In addition to being Director, Maynard also oversees the men’s and women’s throws program and coordinates all aspects of training for the Bruin decathletes. Maynard was the Bruin men’s track and field head coach from 2010-12, as well as the throws coach for both squads. Prior to coming to UCLA, Maynard was head coach/throws coach at Boise State for nine years. In 2012, the UCLA cross country teams experienced their best season in recent years, with the men finishing in 13th place at the NCAA Championships, their highest finish since 1985, and claiming an All-American in Lane Werley. The UCLA men also enjoyed a third-place finish at the NCAA Regional meet and had four runners earn All-West Region honors. Werley also earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors after placing fifth at the Pac-12 Championships. On the women’s side, the Bruins placed sixth at the Pac-12 Championships and seventh at the NCAA West Region Championships. They also ranked as high as 24th during the year in the coaches’ poll. The 2011 cross country squads competed well in the inaugural season for the new Pac-12 Conference. In spite of new conference competitiors, Colorado and Utah, the Bruin men upheld their fourth place position in the conference with a fourth place finish at the 2011 Pac-12 Championships. The team claimed back-to-back team victories at the Nevada Chase and Aztec Invitational, culminating their season with a sixth place finish at the NCAA West Region Championships. Senior Kent Morikawa earned first team all Pac-12 Conference honors after placing eighth over and he, and fellow Bruin Nohe Lema were named to the USTFCCCA All-West Region team after their performances at the regional meet in Palo Alto, CA. In track, the men finished 17th behind All-American perfrmances by Mike Woepse (2nd in pole vault), Alec Faldermeyer (3rd in hammer) and Marcus Nilsson (6th in decathlon). This was a huge improvemernt on the 34th place finish in 2010, and equaled the second-best team finish in the last ten years. In his first year with the Bruins, the 2010 men’s cross country team sent one athlete to the NCAA Championships, Marco Anzures, and finished fifth at Pac-10s and seventh in the West Region. In outdoor track, the men finished tied for 52nd at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with five athletes earning All-America honors and were fifth at the Pac-10 meet. In indoor track, the men won the MPSF Championship crown and tied for 47th at Nationals. In his nine years as the head coach at Boise State, Maynard led a program which produced several historic events - back-to-back (2004 and 2005) national championships by Gabe Wallin in the men’s javelin, over 50 new school record performances and 30 All-American accolades. The Broncos enjoyed unprecedented success behind Maynard’s direction.

coach for the Wildcat program for 13 years prior to joining the Broncos. While coaching at Arizona, Maynard guided 32 individual NCAA Division I All-Americans, including three NCAA National Champions. Maynard’s coaching resume also includes a two-year stint as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Arizona, where he worked with the Wildcat football program as well as being responsible for the Arizona track and field, swimming and tennis teams. He began his collegiate coaching career at Mesa Community College (Ariz.) where he was the assistant track and field coach from 1982-84, and in 1987. Maynard was also instrumental in bringing a world-class facility to Bronco Track & Field. During his first two years leading the Broncos, Maynard and Boise State were successful in purchasing a world championship caliber track and helped construct the building to put it in. The Mondo track was used by USA Track and Field and the Georgia Dome for the national indoor championships. The building is the Idaho Sports Center located in the Idaho Center complex in Nampa, Idaho. The track was purchased with a $250,000 cash gift from John Jackson, President of Jacksons Food Stores in Meridian, Idaho. Boise State has hosted several major meets, including six WAC Indoor Championships. The facility hosted its first national meet in 2005 with the USA Indoor Master’s Championships. His efforts culminated last season, when the Boise State facility was host to the NCAA Championships. CROSS COUNTRY COACHES

FOREST BRADEN

ERIK STEVENS

Distance Coach Fifth Year Boise State, 2007

Volunteer Coach First Year Arizona, 2006

Forest Braden enters his fifth year with the Bruins and continues to serve as the primary cross country coach. The Bruin cross country teams have seen much improvement under the guidance of Braden. In 2012, the Bruin men experienced their highest finish at the NCAA Championships since 1985, placing 13th overall. Lane Werley became the Bruins’ first Cross Country All-American in five years after a 25th-place finish at the NCAAs. The UCLA men also enjoyed a third-place finish at the NCAA Regional meet and had four runners earn All-West Region honors (Werley - 5th place, Nohe Lema - 21st, Dustin Fay - 22nd, David McDonald - 23rd). Werley also earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors after placing fifth at the Pac-12 Championships. On the women’s side in 2012, the Bruins placed sixth at the Pac-12 Championships and seventh at the NCAA West Region Championships. They also ranked as high as 24th during the year in the coaches’ poll.

Entering his first season as a UCLA volunteer assistant coach is Erik Stevens, who brings 10 years of coaching experience to the Bruin program. Stevens will assist with the UCLA cross country, distance and middle distance programs. Stevens worked with the University of Arizona cross country and track & field programs for four seasons (2002-06). After earning his degree in 2006, Stevens began working with Arapahoe HS in Centennial, Colo. as an assistant cross country and track and field coach for both the girls’ and boys’ programs. After two seasons as an assistant coach, he took over as the head coach for the girls’ cross country team and had an immediate impact, leading the program to three consecutive Centennial League Championships and five consecutive Regional Championships. In 2012, Stevens helped bring a new school record in the girl’s 5k to Emily Wolff (18:05).

During the 2011 season, Kent Morikawa led the men’s squad for most of the year, earning All-Pac-12 honors with his eighth-place finish at the conference meet. The men’s team finished fourth at Pac-12s and tied for sixth at the West Region, while the women were 10th in the conference and 18th at regionals. During the regular season, the Bruin men claimed back-to-back team victories at the Nevada Chase and Aztec Invitational.

Stevens also had success coaching the girls’ and boys’ track and field distance programs at Arapahoe. Following a successful fall season, Stevens coached Connor Winter to three individual state titles in the 800m, 1600m and 3200m. Winter, now at the University of Colorado, was the first male athlete to accomplish the triple in over 60 years. The following year, Winter tripled once again while running personal best times of 1:52.56 (800m), 4:11.5 (1600m) and 9:09.04 (3200m). At the Midwest Distance Gala, Winter posted a second-place finish in the Mile in a Colorado all-time best time of 4:07.02.

In 2010, both the men and women showed improvement from the 2009 season. The men moved up from fifth to fourth at the conference meet, while the women moved up to sixth at Pac-10s. At the Regional meet, the men finished eighth, and the women improved to 10th.

In 2012, Stevens helped guide Devan Foster to individual state championships and school records in the 800m (2:10.50) and 1600m (4:59.68). This past spring season, Stevens coached the girls’ 4x800m relay team to a state title (9:10.51) and another school record set by Wolff in the 3200m (11:01.17).

In Braden’s first year with the Bruins in 2009, UCLA sent Marco Anzures and Shannon Murakami to compete at the NCAA Championships. The men also finished fifth at the Pac-10 meet and seventh at the Western Regional. The women were seventh in the Pac-10 and 11th at the regional. Before joining the Bruins, Braden served as a volunteer coach at at Gonzaga, where he worked closely with standout distance coach Pat Tyson in recruiting and facilitating training sessions. Prior to his coaching stint at Gonzaga, Braden was a three-time All-American runner for coach Mike Maynard at Boise State from 2002-2007, earning accolades in indoor and outdoor track as well as cross country. He also won seven Western Athletic Conference titles as a Bronco. Braden also ran for Team Indiana Elite for one year and placed in the top-10 in five USATF Championship meets. In 2011, he started competing again on the track, primarily in the 5000m.

BRUINS ADMINISTRATORS

DAN GUERRERO Athletic Director :: UCLA ‘74 :: 12th Year On April 25, 2002, Daniel G. Guerrero was named UCLA’s eighth Director of Athletics. A former Bruin baseball player, Guerrero, who assumed his duties on July 1, 2002, has enjoyed great success and exudes the pride of a student-athlete who is in charge of the program at his alma mater. In 11 years, Guerrero has clearly established a pattern of “image and substance” that few in his profession can match. UCLA has won 109 NCAA team championships, a figure unmatched by any institution in the nation. UCLA teams have won 23 NCAA championships since his appointment, another national leader, finished second 21 times and have enjoyed an additional 43 Top Five finishes. More than 80% of UCLA teams have qualified for NCAA post-season competition since 2002. The football team has appeared in nine bowl games and the men’s basketball team advanced to consecutive Final Fours from 2006-08. The program has also won 54 conference championships in 15 different sports, produced over 500 All-Americans and featured four Honda Award winners, including the 2003-04 Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. Furthermore, during the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, 32 Bruins participated as athletes or coaches, representing the United States and eight other nations. They won nine medals, including six golds. In the last 11 years, UCLA has finished second three times (2007-08, 2006-07 and 2005-06), third four times (2004-05, 2003-04, 2011-12, 2012-13), fourth (200910), sixth (2002-03), 11th (2010-11) and 16th (2008-09) in the race for the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. In 2013, UCLA won its first Capital One Cup for men’s sports, vaulting to the top of the standings after winning the 2013 College World Series. This past year in NCAA competition, UCLA won its 109th NCAA title when the baseball team captured its first College World Series title, and eight teams finished among the Top 5 nationally. Men’s water polo and men’s tennis finished second, women’s water polo and women’s tennis (tied) placed third, women’s golf and women’s gymnastics finished fourth and women’s soccer tied for fifth. Finally, 57 student-athletes earned All-America honors and 57 were selected to various all-conference teams. Guerrero came to UCLA in 2002 from UC Irvine, where he had served as UCI’s fi fth Director of Athletics for 10 years. Prior to arriving at UC Irvine, he was the Athletic Director for fi ve years at Cal State Dominguez Hills. He received his Bachelor’s degree from UCLA in 1974 and played second base in the Bruin baseball program for four years. Guerrero, born on November 10, 1951 in Tucson, AZ, was raised in Wilmington, CA. He is married to the former Anne Marie Aniello and they have two grown daughters: Jenna and Katie.

GLENN TOTH Associate Athletic Director :: UCLA ‘76 5th Year (Overseeing Cross Country/Track & Field) Glenn Toth, who has served the athletic department as an administrator for more than 35 years, enters his 16th year in charge of the UCLA men’s and women’s tennis programs. He is in his fifth year overseeing the men’s volleyball team, the men’s and women’s cross-country teams, and the men’s and women’s track & field teams. In addition to his role as a sports supervisor, Toth has also seen duty as an assistant coach, and serves as a member of athletic director Dan Guerrero’s senior staff. A senior associate athletic director with a variety of responsibilities, Toth serves as the liaison with shoe and apparel sponsor adidas, having orchestrated both the original 1999 agreement renewals in 2004 and 2010. adidas supplies all Bruin teams, and represents the department’s most lucrative sponsorship. In addition, Toth was point person on the negotiation with International Sports Properties (ISP) which now handles the department’s corporate relations, media rights, program printing, web page, ad sales, and sponsor promotions. Toth also has administrative responsibility for the athletic equipment room which designs, outfits, and maintains all of the Bruins’ uniforms, practice, and playing equipment. In addition, the sports medicine area/athletic training room, which provides injury evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, therapy, and nutritional services to over 700 student-athletes falls under Toth’s supervision, as does the sports performance area and its seven full-time strength coaches. Toth graduated from UCLA in 1976 with a degree in economics. From 1978-84, he supervised the management of home athletic events, team travel, and athletic insurance. In 1982, Toth handled the logistics of UCLA’s move to the Rose Bowl and at the same time became the athletic department’s first marketing director. Promoted to Associate Athletic Director in 1984, he was credited with several award-winning football marketing campaigns and the creation of the department’s corporate relations program. An avid hiker and climber, Toth completed a personal seven-summit ambition by climbing west coast giants Whitney, Rainier, Shasta, Hood, Adams, Baker, and Jefferson. Toth serves as a Reserve Deputy with the LA County Sheriff ’s Department, formerly in patrol and now in search & recovery. His golden retrievers are Misty and Dottie.
