In 2017, the Bruins picked up a lot of firsts, but none were larger than knocking off crosstown rival No. 1 USC in the semifinals of the Pac-12 Championship. UCLA also posted its first-ever win over then-No. 2 Florida State, 3-2, in the final game of the Inaugural East Meets West Challenge, hosted by UCLA at legendary Manhattan Beach Pier in Manhattan Beach, Calif. Along the way, UCLA finished with a then-school-record 30 wins compared to just six defeats and won a then-school-record 24 consecutive duals, finishing second at the Pac-12 Championship.
Head Coach 8th Season at UCLA 147-41 (.782) UCLA ‘96
In 2016, the Bruins finished third at the inaugural NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala. UCLA ended the season with a 22-8 overall record, including going 3-2 at NCAA’s, defeating 8th-seeded Stetson (3-2), 3rd-seeded Pepperdine (3-2) and 5th-seeded Hawai’i (3-0). The Bruins fell in the elimination bracket to No. 1 Florida State (3-1).
Stein Metzger, the 2017 and 2018 Pac-12 Coach of the Year and the 2017 and 2018 USMC/AVCA National Coach of the Year, enters his eighth season as the UCLA Beach Volleyball Head Coach in 2020 after guiding UCLA to back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2018 (40-4) and in 2019 (35-3). He sports an overall record of 147-41 (.782).
Beach volleyball saw several changes in 2015, when UCLA announced that Coach Metzger would leave his duties as assistant indoor coach to focus solely on beach. In addition, the Pac-12 Conference announced during the summer of 2015 that beach volleyball would become a Pac-12 sponsored sport effective the 2016 season. Additionally, the NCAA officially sponsored its first national championship in 2016.
The Bruins’ three losses in 2019 were all to USC by a score of 3-2. But seeded No. 2 for the NCAA Championship after the Trojans won the Pac-12 Championship, UCLA used it as fuel to the fire and defeated top-seeded USC in the NCAA title match, 3-0, without dropping a single set. The Bruins had four All-Americans for the first time in school history in 2019 as Megan and Nicole McNamara from court one and Sarah Sponcil and Lily Justine from court two were all honored by the AVCA. Additionally, the McNamara twins became the first tandem in the history of the NCAA to earn first team All-America honors all four years.
The Pac-12’s adoption of beach volleyball made it the league’s 23rd sport and the first

COACHING STAFF major conference to sponsor beach volleyball. Eight member institutions currently sponsor beach volleyball, well above the conference threshold of six. In a related decision, beach volleyball had a Pac-12 Championship beginning in the spring of 2016.
Following his days in Westwood, Metzger competed professionally on the AVP Tour, winning 16 times with partners Kevin Wong (two times), Jake Gibb (four), Mike Lambert (nine) and Mark Williams (one). Metzger was twice a part of the AVP Team of the Year with Gibb (‘05) and Lambert (‘06), ranking as the Tour’s top player both seasons. He earned the Crocs Cup title in 2006.
Metzger completed his third season with the UCLA women’s indoor volleyball staff in 2014, his second as an assistant coach, while serving as a volunteer coach in 2012.
In 2004, Metzger earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic Beach Volleyball team, finishing in fifth with partner Dax Holdren. A year prior, the duo won the silver medal at the 2003 Beach Volleyball World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Metzger also has two international titles to his credit with Wong in 2001 and ‘02, as well as a Bronze medal at the ‘01 Goodwill Games.
Metzger has guided UCLA Beach Volleyball since its inaugural season in the spring of 2013. The Bruins have been ranked in the Top 10 throughout each of their first seven campaigns. Debuting the sand team competitively just two months after the sport was added to UCLA’s athletic program, Metzger guided Kelly Reeves to the program’s first sand All-America award in 2013, while two pairs (Reeves and Meg Norton and Zoë Nightingale and Becca Strehlow) each made the AVCA National Championships.
In addition to his collegiate coaching accolades, Metzger has trained U.S., French and Israeli National Beach teams. He has also coached with the USA Volleyball Elite Development Program.
Over the first three seasons of Bruin sand volleyball, Metzger, who is one of UCLA’s NCAA-record 13 Beach Volleyball Olympians, led the program to 20 dual wins (10 in 2015) and coached three sets of pairs’ teams to the AVCA National Championships, including Zoë Nightingale and Kamila Tan in 2015. He went on to win two more National Championships in 1995 and ‘96, getting named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team both times. Metzger earned AVCA First-Team AllAmerica and ASICS/Volleyball Magazine All-America honors both seasons, while earning AVCA Co-Player of the Year accolades as a team captain during his senior campaign. CASEBEER
In 2015, Casebeer finished second with Derek Olson at NORCECA Tavares, his careerbest international finish. He also eared a seventh-place finish on the 2015 AVP Tour in Chicago with Olson. He also finished ninth three times, twice with Olson and once with Casey Jennings.
Volunteer Assistant Coach First Season UCLA ‘12
Casebeer partnered with Sean Rosenthal in 2016 to record his then-best finish of second at the New York City Open and would later be named the AVP’s Best Server. In 2017, Casebeer played on the domestic AVP Tour, finishing third three times with partner John Mayer. He also was a five-time champion on the Japan Tour and had five fifth-place finishes in the Banco do Brasil. In 2018, he finished third at three AVP events with Reid Priddy (Austin, Seattle and Chicago) and also finished third with Priddy at p1440 in San Jose. He was named the AVP’s Best Server in 2018 for the second time in his career. He also competed in three FIVB events with Priddy, recording a best finish of 17th in Huntington Beach.
Jeremy Casebeer enters his first season in 2020 as the Bruins’ volunteer assistant coach as announced by UCLA Head Coach Stein Metzger on Oct. 25, 2019. Casebeer replaces Irene Pollock, who helped guide the Bruins to their second-consecutive NCAA Championship on May 5, 2019.
He is coming off of his most successful season in 2019 where he won his first-ever title with Chaim Schalk, defeating Taylor Crabb and Jake Gibb in straight sets (21-19, 21-18) to win the AVP Seattle Open on June 23, 2019. Casebeer and Schalk also finished second at the Austin Open and had two third-place finishes (Chicago Gold Series and Hawaii Open). The duo also picked up three fifth-place finishes (New York City Open, Manhattan Beach Open, and Huntington Beach Open).
“Our previous volunteer assistant coaches have left an exceptional legacy at UCLA,” Metzger said. “I expect Jeremy will have a similar impact on our student-athlete’s development and the development of the program as a whole. VolleyMob All-Americans 2018
AVCA Top Flight Award Introduced in 2018, this awards program was designed to recognize excellence in collegiate beach volleyball from all over the country and across all flights. In order for a pair to be eligible for the award, the two student-athletes must compete in at least 15 matches together and at a specific flight number. Should that pair win at least 75% of their matches – regardless of the overall result of the dual – those athletes will achieve “Top Flight” status.

2018 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
#116 GULF SHORES, Ala. – The top-seeded UCLA beach volleyball team made history Sunday, winning the first NCAA Championship in program history. UCLA defeated fourth-seeded Florida State, 3-1, avenging a Friday loss to the Seminoles that put the Bruins one loss away from elimination. They proceeded to win four matches in two days, capped by Sunday’s triumph, which gave UCLA its 116th overall NCAA Championship. The Bruins won 35 of its final 36 matches to complete their historic season with a 40-4 overall record. The 40 wins represent a single-season NCAA record, previously set by USC last year (38). The Seminoles dropped to 33-7. The win marked UCLA’s first over Florida State in an NCAA Championship setting, with the Bruins having been eliminated by the Seminoles in 2016 and 2017. Returning to the flight format used throughout the regular season, pairs 4 and 5 took to the sand first. In their first action since Saturday’s semifinal, the Seminoles got off to a hot start, claiming each first set. The Bruins would not go quietly, however, as each tandem recovered to force a first-to-15 third set. The 2018 NCAA Champions won UCLA’s 116th NCAA title with a 3-1 victory over Florida State.
UCLA’s No. 5 pair of Izzy Carey and Megan Muret posted a dramatic 24-22 second-set victory and rode its newfound momentum to a 17-21, 24-22, 15-8 win over Madison Fitzpatrick and Francesca Goncalves to get the Bruins on the board first. The Florida State duo of Molly McBain-Brooke Kuhlman would soon make it a best-of-three affair, though, pulling the Seminoles even with a 21-15, 19-21, 15-12 defeat of Elise Zappia-Mac May in a battle of No. 4 pairs. The top three courts came out determined in the second flight, sweeping the first sets to put the Bruins on the brink of history. UCLA’s Court 3 team of Zana Muno and Savvy Simo grabbed their opportunity with a convincing
win over Macy Jerger-Sara Putt, 21-19, 21-9, to inch the Bruins one step closer. With both Courts 1 and 2 on match point, the duo of Sarah Sponcil-Lily Justine played the part of hero. The second-court pair knocked off Katie Horton-Hailey Luke of the Seminoles, 21-18, 21-19, setting off a storming of the court in celebration. The pairs of Nicole McNamara-Megan McNamara (Court 1) and Izzy Carey-Megan Muret (Court 5) were selected to the All-Tournament Team.

2019 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
#117 GULF SHORES, Ala. – The second-seeded UCLA beach volleyball team won its second-consecutive NCAA title on Sunday afternoon (May 5), taking down top-seeded USC 3-0 at Gulf Shores Public Beach. UCLA, which finished 35-3 on the season, opened the dual in style, winning in straight sets on courts four and five. Juniors Madi Yeomans and Savvy Simo took down Joy Dennis and Maja Kaiser, 21-16, 21-19, on court four, while senior Izzy Carey and freshman Lindsey Sparks mustered a 21-16, 21-15, triumph over Cammie Dorn and Mollie Ebertin on court five. The championship-clinching victory came on court three, as senior Zana Muno and freshman Abby Van Winkle defeated USC’s Haley Hallgren and Alexandra Poletto, 22-20, 21-13. The win for the Bruin pair snapped a three-game losing streak to the Trojans as a team and for the pair on court three. The Bruins were on pace for a 5-0 victory over the Trojans without dropping a set before the matches on courts one and two were truncated. On court one, seniors Megan and Nicole McNamara took the first set off of USC’s Tina Graudina and Abril Bustamante, 21-18, and were tied at 19-19 in the second set when the match was ended. Likewise on court two, the Bruin pair of senior Sarah Sponcil and junior Lily Justine took the first set off of Sammy Slater and Terese Cannon, 21-18, and had a sizeable 19-10 lead in the second set before the match was ended. The Bruins have now posted the best record in the country for two consecutive seasons, going 35-3 in 2019 and 40-4 in 2018. The 40 wins are a UCLA and NCAA single-season record. UCLA has a combined 75-7 record

in duals over the last two seasons which is a winning percentage of 91.5 percent. Of the 75 wins, 65, or 87 percent, have come against ranked teams, with 40, or 53 percent, coming against teams in the Top 10, and 24, or 32 percent, having been against teams in the Top five. These numbers reflect that UCLA not only has more victories than any other team in the country over the last two years, but it has more wins over ranked teams, top 10 teams and top five teams. The Bruins beat the Trojans six straight times across the 2018 and 2019 seasons, going 8-4 against USC in that span.
UCLA has gone 9-1 at the NCAA Championship with back-to-back titles in the last two seasons and of UCLA’s 35 wins in 2019, 23 were sweeps, including three in the NCAA Championship, and of the 23 sweeps, 17 were against nationally ranked teams with 12 ranked in the Top 10. UCLA went 35-3 (92.1%) as a team in 2019 and across all five flights, the Bruins were 155-23 (87.2%). Additionally, of the 155 court victories, 131 were in straight sets (84.5%). But even when UCLA was forced to a third set, the Bruins were a combined 24-12 (66.7%). MAPES BEACH
entering its first season as UCLA’s home . . .
MAPES BEACH Mapes Beach, which is located at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, serves as the home of the UCLA women’s beach volleyball team and as a secondary pool for the UCLA men’s and women’s water polo teams. The beach volleyball courts have undergone a complete renovation that was recently completed in time for the 2020 season, thanks to a donation totaling $1,000,000 from former UCLA tennis student-athlete John Mapes (BA 1990) and his wife Carrie (BA 1990, MEd 1991). The donation to the beach volleyball program was used to endow a student-athlete scholarship, as well as to support the construction of new beach volleyball courts at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. After renovation, Mapes Beach now consists of four courts, of which three are regulation size with the fourth being used for warm-up purposes only. The courts are open to UCLA staff and students, MondaySunday, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. They are located at 111 Easton Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1370.
