PREVIN CHANDRARATNA

HEAD COACH

2nd Season

Columbia ’97

Previn Chandraratna has entered his second season as UCLA’s head coach in 2022-23, his eighth year on the coaching staff in Westwood.

Chandraratna was promoted to interim head coach in June of 2021 before the interim label was removed at the conclusion of the 2022 season. He served as an assistant coach for six seasons on the Bruins’ staff, including three years (2018-19, 2019-20 and 202021) as the associate head coach. Chandraratna joined UCLA’s rowing program as an assistant coach in 2015.

UCLA’s 2022 spring season was highlighted by a solid varsity eight crew that defeated USC in the seasonopening race and finished ahead of No. 19 Washington State to close the spring campaign. As a program, the Bruins had been ranked as high as No. 16 midway through the year.

While serving as the associate head coach, Chandraratna had overseen all of the program’s recruiting efforts and coached the second varsity eight. During the pandemicaltered season in 2020-21, UCLA rose to as high as No. 14 in the CRCA’s weekly national rankings. He helped UCLA’s second varsity eight crew to victories against USC in all three matchups, en route to a fourth-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships. The second varsity eight finished ahead of No. 15 Washington State and No. 19 Oregon State.

UCLA’s rowing program had opened the 2020 season with a dual-meet win against San Diego State, winning all four races, before the remainder of the spring schedule was canceled.

In 2019, the Bruins secured a fourth-place team finish at Pac-12 Championships (Lake Natoma), finishing ahead of Washington State, Oregon State and USC. The varsity four and the second varsity eight placed fifth and fourth, respectively, at the year-end event.

In 2017 and 2018, Chandraratna coached the varsity four to a fifth-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships. In addition, UCLA’s second varsity eight picked up wins against Stanford, USC and other rivals during those two regular seasons. In 2017, the second varsity four won the San Diego Crew Classic.

A 1997 graduate of Columbia University, Chandraratna arrived at UCLA in August 2015 with 16 years of coaching experience, including seven years working

with collegiate rowing programs. Prior to his time at UCLA, he served for three seasons as an assistant coach and director of recruiting with the women’s rowing team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 2014 at MIT, he helped the program to its fastest team finish in program history, including bronze medals in the varsity eight and varsity four at the Patriot League Championships. The squad made appearances in the Grand Finals of its regional championships in all events during his three years in Cambridge, Mass.

Prior to his time at MIT, Chandraratna served as freshman heavyweight coach and director of recruiting at his alma mater, Columbia University, for four years. During his tenure at Columbia, the team earned a national ranking as high as No. 9.

Chandraratna also brought 10 years of scholastic coaching experience to Westwood. He worked as head coach of Row New York and as an assistant coach at Pelham Community Rowing, where he helped lead squads to 10 state titles and one national championship. As Director of Programs at Row New York, he helped the program win the prestigious US Rowing Anita de Frantz Golden Oars Award and was a founding member of the US Rowing Task Force on Access, Affordability and Diversity.

As a rower, Chandraratna earned Most Valuable Player honors as the stroke seat and captain of the heavyweight program at Columbia. He also trained with the U.S. National Team at the National Sculling Center in Augusta, Ga.

Chandraratna earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in international relations from Columbia University. He earned a second master’s degree in sports leadership from Northeastern University in 2017. He currently resides in Playa del Rey, Calif., with his wife, Manuela, and their son, Logan.

ANNA THOMSON ASSISTANT COACH

5th Season

Texas ’12

Anna Thomson has entered her fifth year as an assistant coach with the women’s rowing program in 2022-23.

Thomson works in an assistant capacity for all aspects of the program, including development, high performance and recruitment. She serves as the rowing program’s recruiting coordinator and coaches the fours group. As a former Division I rower and student-athlete, Anna has become a great resource to UCLA’s student-athletes.

The Bruins’ 2022 spring season was highlighted by a strong varsity eight crew that defeated crosstown rival USC in the season-opening race and finished ahead of No. 19 Washington State to close the spring campaign. As a program, UCLA was ranked as high as No. 16 midway through the year.

In 2021, UCLA raced to a trio of dual-meet wins against Loyola Marymount, USC and San Diego. The Bruins’ program returned to the water in the fall of 2020 after the spring season (2020) had been substantially abbreviated due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Bruins opened the spring of 2020 with a dual-meet win against San Diego State, winning all four races.

In 2019, Thomson helped the Bruins to a fourth-place team finish at Pac-12 Championships, as UCLA finished ahead of Washington State, Oregon State and crosstown rival USC. She worked with the novice eight crew that finished third in the Grand Final race at the San Diego Crew Classic and recorded a bronze medal finish at Pac-12 Championships.

JAKE POWER ASSISTANT COACH

2nd Season

Virginia ’16

Jake Power has entered his second season on the Bruins’ coaching staff in 2022-23. He served as a volunteer assistant coach at UCLA during the 2021-22 season.

Power, who graduated from the University of Virginia in 2016, primarily assisted with the Bruins’ novice walk-on rowers in 2021-22. UCLA’s novice eight crew registered second-place finishes on back-to-back days at the San Diego Crew Classic (March 26-27, 2022).

Power arrived at UCLA after coaching stops at Loyola Marymount and Stanford. Most recently, he had served as an assistant coach at nearby LMU during the 2018-19 season. He mainly worked with the varsity and novice fours. The Lions finished in first place in the V4+ and 2V4+ races at the 2019 West Coast Conference (WCC) Championship, the first time that the rowing program at Loyola Marymount had accomplished that feat. LMU’s novice four crew secured a first-place finish at the 2019 WIRA Championship.

Prior to his time at LMU, Power served as a volunteer assistant coach at Stanford during the 2016-17 and 2017-18 school years. He assisted with the selection of the varsity four crew that placed eighth at the 2018 NCAA Championships. In addition, he coached the development group that consisted of pairs and fours.

Prior to joining UCLA in the fall of 2018, Thomson coached the Wellington Rowing Club, working with the women’s squad alongside Joe O’Neill. In 2017, she successfully created and coached the Wellington U19 development squad preparing high school rowers for U.S. collegiate recruitment and New Zealand National team selection.

Thomson rowed for the University of Texas (Austin), graduating in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in radio, television and film. Through her career at Texas, she helped the rowing program to four consecutive Big 12 Conference titles, in addition to winning the 2011 C-USA Championship. In the classroom, Thomson was a three-time recipient of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award. She was named the Texas rowing team’s academic MVP in 2011 and was selected to the Big 12 Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll all four seasons. Thomson was also named a CRCA Scholar-Athlete in 2011.

Prior to her time attending Texas, Thomson was selected to the New Zealand National High Performance program as a member of the U21 Central High Performance team. She earned silver medals in the U21 eight and U21 quad at the New Zealand National Rowing Championship.

Thomson grew up in Wellington, New Zealand, where she began rowing in high school for Star Boating Club and Wellington Girls’ College. She was a New Zealand National Team junior trialist and was twice honored as the Star Boating Club School’s rower of the year.

In her free time, Thomson enjoys yoga, hiking outdoors and video editing.

While serving as a volunteer assistant coach at Stanford, Power also worked as a research assistant in the behavioral lab at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He facilitated online and in-lab marketing and behavioral research for faculty and students while studying goal attainment and interpersonal dynamics in teams.

As a student-athlete at Virginia (Charlottesville, Va.), Power was a three-year varsity coxswain and served as team captain during his senior season (2015-16). Among his highlights during his time at Virginia, Power helped the V8+ crew to a third-place finish in 2015 and 2016 at the ACRA Championships. His team won and set course records in the V4+ at the 2014 Head of the Charles Regatta. In 2015, Virginia’s V8+ raced to a fifth-place finish at the Head of the Charles. He began his rowing career at Camp Randall Rowing Club (Madison, Wis.).

All requests should be submitted at least 24 hours in advance. During competition, video and still photographers may only shoot from the bike path. The dock or launch areas may not be obstructed. Contact the athletic communications office at (310) 206-7870 for any special arrangements or with any questions.

INTERVIEWS: All interviews with student-athletes and coaches must be facilitated through UCLA’s athletic communications office. Please do not expect student-athletes to be available if prior arrangements have not been made.

TEAM TRAVEL: For security purposes, UCLA does not release its travel information or travel plans for athletic teams to the general public. To contact a member of the rowing team on the road, please reach out to Alex Timiraos in the athletic communications office.

GENE BLOCK CHANCELLOR

16th Year

Stanford ’70

Dr. Gene Block became chancellor of UCLA in August 2007 and has entered his 16th year as the university’s chief executive officer. In his current capacity, Chancellor Block oversees all aspects of the university’s three-part mission of education, research and service.

A champion of public universities, Chancellor Block has set four major priorities for UCLA during his administration: academic excellence, diversity, civic engagement and financial security. He has called for UCLA to deepen its engagement with the Los Angeles region and to increase access for students from underrepresented populations.

Chancellor Block holds UCLA faculty appointments in psychiatry and bio-behavioral sciences in the David Geffen School of Medicine and in physiological science in the College of Letters and Science. He also heads a research laboratory on campus that is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Previously, he served as vice president and provost of the University of Virginia. He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Stanford University and a master’s and Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Oregon.

Chancellor Block and his wife, Carol, have two adult children. The Blocks are avid Bruin fans and attend the competitions of various Bruin athletic programs.

MARTIN JARMOND

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

3rd Year

UNC Wilmington ’01

Martin Jarmond, a nationally recognized leader in college athletics, has built an impressive track record of competitive excellence, innovative strategy and student athlete success. A two time recipient of Sports Business Journal’s Forty Under 40 Award with more than 20 years in sports administration spanning three conferences, Jarmond is guiding UCLA to new heights through his culture of an E.L.I.T.E. mindset – Energy, Leadership, Integrity, Toughness and Excellence. Jarmond’s results-driven strategies combined with a relentless work ethic to elevate UCLA Athletics creates an exceptional experience for student-athletes and fans alike.

Jarmond was hired on May 19, 2020, as UCLA’s Alice and Nahum Lainer Family Director of Athletics, becoming the ninth athletic director in school history. Jarmond made an immediate impact on the Bruins, jumpstarting the Voting Matters Initiative, the first of its kind in the country which assisted studentathletes in discovering the tools needed to exact meaningful change through civic duty. Jarmond engineered a partnership between UCLA and Nike/Jordan, becoming only the fifth Jordan brand school in the nation and the first partnership with Nike in UCLA history. The six-year agreement between UCLA and Nike provides for 22 of the 25 UCLA varsity sports with Nike apparel, while football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball don Jordan. Jarmond exhibits a strong commitment to mental health awareness and his emphasis on diversity and inclusion was recognized in a 2021 SBJ award for being a national leader in diversity and inclusive hiring. He was the Pac-12 Conference representative to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee for 2021-22.

In June of 2022, Jarmond worked closely with campus leadership while playing a critical role in UCLA Athletics applying and being accepted for future membership in the Big Ten Conference. One of the most important announcements in

the history of UCLA Athletics, the Bruins will join the Big Ten Conference in 2024.

Comprehensive work by Jarmond and his staff throughout the pandemic ensured all Bruin teams could compete safely during the 2020-21 seasons. UCLA teams captured four conference titles and the men’s water polo team brought national title No. 119 home to Westwood. The men’s basketball team embarked on a remarkable journey which led to an appearance in the 2021 NCAA Final Four and the program’s first national semifinal appearance since 2008. UCLA finished 13th nationally in the 2020-21 Learfield IMG College Director’s Cup. These athletic achievements were balanced by record numbers of studentathletes earning spots on the conference all-academic squads, with 49 individuals earning a perfect 4.0 GPA for the Winter Quarter, and 131 student-athletes earning their UCLA degrees. For the first time ever, the Bruins produced multiple winners of the NCAA Elite 90 Award. Four student-athletes were recognized by CoSIDA as Academic All-Americans.

Jarmond came to UCLA from Boston College, where he served as the school’s Director of Athletics for three years. During his time there, he orchestrated the Eagles’ first-ever strategic plan, a comprehensive five-year goal to advance the program by fostering student-athlete formation, strengthening competitive excellence, increasing external engagement and enhancing facilities. The strategic plan was supported by BC’s first-ever athletics-only capital campaign, at the time, the largest campaign of any Atlantic Coast Conference institution at $150 million. Jarmond hired high-impact coaches in football, women’s basketball, softball, volleyball, swimming & diving, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and fencing. Jarmond served on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee and on the John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation Board of Directors.

Prior to joining Boston College in 2017 and becoming the youngest athletic director of any Power Five institution at age 37, Jarmond previously served as deputy director of athletics at Ohio State, moving up the ranks after arriving as an associate athletic director for development in 2009. During his time at Ohio State, he was the lead administrator for a variety of sports, including football and men’s basketball, and directed external and internal relations and day-today operations. He also had responsibility for football scheduling, served on the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Committee, and was a member of the inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship Advisory Group and the Rose Bowl Advisory Committee. As Ohio State Athletics’ chief advancement officer, Jarmond helped raise more than $120 million between 20102012.

Jarmond was also an assistant athletic director for development for seven years at Michigan State, where he served on the athletic director’s executive leadership team. He was a key member of the $1.2 billion “Campaign for MSU” development team and a liaison between Michigan State’s university development and alumni association leadership. Jarmond led the efforts to implement Scholarship Seating in football and Courtside seating in men’s basketball.

A native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Jarmond, 42, earned a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. A two-year captain of the men’s basketball team, he led his team to the program’s first-ever NCAA tournament appearance in 2000 and earned Colonial Athletic Association All-Academic honors in 2001. He holds both a M.B.A. and a master’s in sports administration from Ohio University. Jarmond is married to Dr. Jessica Jarmond, a dentist. They have three daughters: Scarlett, Savannah and Serena
