A hung Parliament, take two In May 2015, the UK could face another hung Parliament. What types of government could emerge? How will negotiations be conducted – and who governs in the meantime? Crucially, how will this time round differ from 2010? Whitehall experts Professor Robert Hazell and the Rt Hon Peter Riddell explain all. Misleading cases in customary law

What’s in a metaphor?

The writer A. P. Herbert satirised customary law through his comical litigant Alfred Haddock. It is, however, a means of obtaining equitable solutions that are in line with a popular understanding of the law. Hear from Professor Martyn Rady (UCL SSEES) why customary law is both a symbol of supposed backwardness and prestige in central Europe.

We say “I see what you mean”. We speak of the Enlightenment. What is this inner light that helps us think? And where does the Renaissance come into it? Professor Dilwyn Knox (Director, School of European Languages Culture & Society) explains how a passage written in a villa outside 15th-century Florence sheds light on all of this.
