Welcome to UCL’s public events leaflet, showcasing a range of public talks, lectures, exhibitions, workshops, film screenings and performances taking place throughout summer 2016. There are many great events from April right through until August. Join UCL and UCLH for their cancer research public open day (p02) or come along to UCL’s Art Museum Film Club screening of !Women Art Revolution (p15). We also have some fantastic activities taking place such as Gorgon mask-making at the UCL Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology (p07), handling unusual specimens at ‘Hungry hungry herbivores’ (p10) and a wide range of craft workshops at the ‘Festival of Stuff’ (p13). The events listed here are only a selection of what’s on offer and are correct at time of going to press. Spontaneity, antagonism and the moral politics of outrage: urban protest in Argentina since 2001 In this talk, Dr Sian Lazar (University of Cambridge) identifies two types of urban protest that have taken place in Argentina since 2001: mass, ‘self-convened’ protests that are associated with a morality of outrage and those convened by organised social forces such as trade unions and workers’ confederations. In this talk, Dr Ezequiel GonzalezOcantos (Oxford University) will present the argument developed in his book, Shifting Legal Visions: Judicial Change and Human Rights Trials in Latin America, which develops a sociological institutionalist theory of judicial decision-making to explain the explosion of human rights trials in Latin America since 2000. The Gordon Childe Lecture: A brief Revolution in conversation: history of flight from the state Brandalism Mountains, wetlands, swamps and even slums have served historically as refuge zones for populations fleeing the state. Drawing on his book, The Art of Not Being Governed, Professor James C. Scott (Yale University) will examine the principles of geography, subsistence practices and social structure that abet both state avoidance and prevention.

How do contemporary movements of resistance align with historical definitions of revolution? Join Sabina Andron, researcher at the UCL Bartlett School of Architecture, for a discussion about the recent brandalism.org.uk project in Paris and the medium of the poster as a grassroots bearer of subversive messages.

Computational psychiatry: using models to help understand mental health disorders

Find out more about the role of archaeologists as spies and soldiers in the Middle East during World War One with Robert Fleming, Information and Outreach Curator (National Army Museum). Come and draw inspiration from our collection in our dedicated drop-in drawing sessions. We will provide pencils, charcoal and paper.

An evening exploring ideas of beauty and the role of Nefertiti as a black icon. Beginning with a talk by Kandace Chimbiri on how Nefertiti has defined (or not) ancient Egyptian beauty, you can then take part in an artistic activity led by Lauren Craig that explores the concept of beauty itself.

The festival includes four days of bookable masterclasses, including enamelling, wooden dust pan and brush making, fabric dying and fish printing. The festival will end with an open day, taking over the whole street. We will be bringing back some of our favourite activities from throughout the year and some new discoveries.

A play within a play, it follows the inmates of the Charenton Insane Asylum as they mount their version of the assassination of Jean-Paul Marat during the French Revolution, written and produced by the Marquis de Sade. UCL Chamber Music Club concert Reimagining the Baroque composers. Revolution under a king: French prints 1789–92 Showcasing a unique collection of prints from the first three years of the French Revolution, this exhibition will consist of vivid coloured prints of major events from the period, as well as a selection of medals, including one made from ‘chains of servitude’, supposedly found in the Bastille.

This exhibition considers Shakespeare’s influence and our perennial fascination with the Bard. Skullpture at the Grant Museum Sculpture students from the UCL Slade School of Fine Art have been invited to create works in response to the museum’s collections, science and history. Alongside the museum’s historic skeletons, skulls and specimens preserved in jars, the new works will engage with animal/human encounters and transform the historic zoological museum.
