Dear friends of the Winkler Center... As the 2016-2018 Chair of the Henry R. Winkler Center Advisory Board I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself and to share with you some exciting and important developments that have been going on at the Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions for the past several months. The Winkler Center Advisory Board will be meeting soon to begin planning for the upcoming year. We look forward to an excellent year of programming and activities. Following are some of our accomplishments in 2016:
Philip Diller, MD, PhD; Fred Lazarus Jr. Professor of Family and Community Medicine; Chair, Winkler Center Advisory Board.
Cecil Striker Society Lecture FEATURED EXHIBIT A History of Nursing at UC Lucas Board Room
Outgoing Winkler Advisory Board Chair, Dr. Marianne Ivey; keynote speaker Dr. Julie Fairman, and Winkler Advisory Board Member, Dr. Creighton Wright.
We welcomed spring by holding our 7th annual Cecil Striker event on April 14, 2016. Our keynote speaker for the event was Dr. Julie Fairman, PhD, RN, FAAN, Nightingale Professor of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and Chair of the Biobehavioral Health Sciences Department. In her talk, “Making History: From the University of Cincinnati to the Future of Nursing,” Dr. Fairman shared how impressed she was with the integration of education practice and research that is apparent across the campus.
Indeed, as a historian herself, Dr. Fairman has an even greater appreciation and respect for the Center as she noted that special collections such as those found in the Winkler Center, “help us to see and observe change over time as it relates to history.” The event generated over 100 attendees and included Winkler Center Advisory Board Members and donors, faculty members, nurses, physicians, and community members from the surrounding Cincinnati region. The Winkler Center would like to thank the following donors for their generous support for the lecture program: Dr. and Mrs. Carl Fischer, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Cecil L. Striker, PhD, Dr. and Mrs. Theodore W. Striker, UC Health, Dr. and Mrs. Michael K. Farrell and UC College of Nursing.

Staffing Changes Lori E. Harris began her career working at the HSL & Winkler Center last September as the Visiting Scholar from the National Institutes of Health/National Library of Medicine. In March of 2016 Lori was hired as the new Assistant Director for the Health Sciences Library and the Henry R. Winkler Center operations. In this role, Lori will provide leadership and coordination of the daily operations of the Health Sciences Library and the Winkler Center. In collaboration with other members of the Winkler Center team, she will lead the development of policies and procedures, create new programs, and coordinate collection development and management of the Winkler Center. Lori received her MSLS from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her BA from Smith College with a certificate in archival studies and a certificate in museum studies. Lori can be reached at 513-558-0315.
The Henry R. Winkler Center also welcomed Gino Pasi, Archivist/Curator. Gino served as Collections Manager for the Special Collections and Archives at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, before coming to the Winkler Center. Gino will acquire, accession, process and maintain the archives of health professionals and biomedical researchers with a connection to Cincinnati and the region. He is also the lead for the Center’s exhibits program, oral history program, website content development, and public programming initiatives. Gino received his MA in American studies from Pennsylvania State University Harrisburg, Harrisburg, PA and his BA in history from Messiah College, Grantham, PA. Gino’s direct dial number is 513-558-5123
Nina Herzog is a recent graduate of Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and joined the Winkler Center staff in a part-time capacity in June 2016. Thanks to a donation from Dr. Creighton Wright, Nina is working to complete processing of the Creighton Wright Collection. Nina is also the lead archivist in processing the Robert A. Kehoe collection. Nina received her MA in history with a public history concentration from Wright State University and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history with a minor in religion. Nina can be reached at 513-558-5120.
Lori, Gino and Nina bring numerous years of experience working in academic institutions and extensive knowledge of archival policies and practices. They also bring a high level of enthusiasm and motivation that will be a welcome addition to the Winkler Center as we develop programming for the upcoming year. Under the direction of Associate Dean Leslie Schick, Lori and Gino are in the process of conducting an assessment and evaluation of our collections, space and operational policies. Our goal is to implement best practices in the Center to ensure that researchers, faculty and students who visit the Center and conduct research here have full accessibility to our world renowned collections and artifacts.

Staffing Changes continued ... The Winkler Center Advisory Board Members and the University of Cincinnati Library system extend a fond farewell and congratulations to Veronica Buchanan. Veronica was hired in February 2014 to work on the Creighton Wright Collection. During her time at the Winkler Center, Veronica worked closely with Advisory Board Members, donors, library faculty and staff. Veronica left the Winkler Center in May 2016 to begin working as the Archivist for the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati and continues to work in a collaborative spirit with the Winkler Center. In May, Veronica worked with Lori to transfer approximately 41 medical ledgers from Good Samaritan Hospital dating from 1860 and 1920 to the Winkler Center’s Good Samaritan Hospital collection. These ledgers contain patient records, indexes to patients records, and death records. These ledgers give us an important window into the ways in which patient medical history was captured as well as important demographic information regarding populations that were being served by Good Samaritan Hospital during this time period. Visitors and Research The Winkler Center has enjoyed a record number of tours over the summer months. In mid-August we welcomed visitors from the Ohio Chapter of the Special Library Association as well as international visitors from IFLA, the leading international body representing the global interests of library and information services. Of course the Winkler Center remains a popular destination for local groups such as the Cincinnati Women’s Book Club and the College of Medicine’s Medical Sciences BioMed Research Tour (a tour for high school students who are perspective pre-med students). Both groups visited the Winkler Center in May of this year. Over the summer the Winkler Center has worked with over 40 researchers (both on site as well as via email and telephone) assisting them with reference requests for materials housed within our collection. Gifts The University of Cincinnati Libraries is pleased to announce a generous gift from the National Film Preservation Foundation for the preservation and digitization of three surgical films by Dr. Mont Rogers Reid. Dr. Reid served as the second Christian R. Holmes Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine and as Chief of Surgery at Cincinnati General Hospital until his untimely death in 1943. Dr. Reid came to Cincinnati with his friend and colleague, Dr. George Heuer, the first Christian R. Holmes Professor. Both trained under the esteemed “father of modern surgery,” Dr. William Halsted, at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. UC has had Dr. Reid’s surgical films in its archives since the 1930s. They remained in the UC Department of Surgery’s archive until 2015 when they were transferred to the Winkler Center. This film collection has been deemed as one of the most important collections by the Winkler Center’s Advisory Board as well as national and local archivists. No other library in the United States has film footage of surgeries conducted by Dr. Reid, so these films are very rare. In addition, these surgical documentaries are Kodacolor acetate films, a format that rarely survives and is generally not preserved physically or digitally. Preserving these films represents a rare opportunity for the Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of Health Professions and the National Film Preservation Foundation to preserve the only remaining film footage of a true pioneer in medicine and surgery. The three films that show the best chance for successful preservation are "Cholecystectomy with Gallstones (1935)," "Ovarian Cyst & Inguinal Herniotomy (August 1935)," and "Toxic Thyroid (December 17, 1935). "

After preservation and digitization, Dr. Reid's surgical videos will be uploaded to UC Libraries' Digital Resource Commons (DRC) to create a permanent record for each film. They will also be made available on the Winkler Center website to be viewed by scholars, researchers, and historians throughout the world. Look for future announcements as to when Dr. Reid's newly digitized films will be made available to the general public. The Winkler Center would like to thank Dr. William Camm for discovering and recognizing the value of the Mont Reid films and for his personal contribution as a donor to this important preservation project.

Recent Additions to the Oral History Program Thanks to Advisory Board Member Dr. William Camm’s efforts, the Christ Hospital and Henry R. Winkler Center continue to collaborate on an oral history project documenting notable Christ Hospital figures. On July 19, 2016, Dr. Camm and Dr. Robert Strub interviewed Dr. John Pottschmidt in the Winkler Center’s Hauck Gallery. Doctors Strub and Pottschmidt are not only leading figures at Christ Hospital, but also both have significant ties to the College of Medicine. Gino Pasi, Archivist/ Curator, worked directly with the staff from Christ Hospital to handle the logistics of the oral history interview. We remain appreciative of Dr. Camm’s commitment and experience developing the Winkler Center’s oral history programming and will post information on the Winkler Center website when Dr. Pottschmidt’s interview will be available. In the interim, the completed oral history of Dr. William Schreiner, College of Medicine and Internal Medicine resident graduate is also available for viewing in the Winkler Center. We look forward to broadening the Winkler Center’s oral history program in the coming year. If you have a suggestion for an oral history or would like to view a current oral history interview, please contact Gino Pasi directly at 513-558-5123.

Social Media The Winkler Center has a unique mission and audience to warrant its own social media presence. To that end, Melissa Cox Norris, Director of Library Communications, will work with Winkler Center staff to enhance and re-brand both the Winkler Center’s website and Facebook pages. We plan to have monthly updates on both pages that highlight collections being processed, specific artifacts being preserved, and our “Oral History Corner,” which will showcase snippets from our Oral History interviews. Please stay up-to-date with the changes to the Winkler Center Facebook page on the Winkler Center website: http://www.libraries.uc.edu/winkler-center.html
Future Programming Recently, Advisory Board Member Richard Puff met with Associate Dean, Director Leslie Schick to discuss an opportunity for the Winkler Center to collaborate with the Cincinnati Museum Center. Winkler Center staff met with Scott L. Gampfer, Director, History Collections and Library of the Cincinnati Museum Center to discuss partnering with the Winkler Center to showcase exhibitions from the Cincinnati Museum Center collection that may align with collections within the Winkler Center. One possibility discussed was utilizing the current exhibition cases located in the Lucas Board Room to rotate exhibitions that highlight history of medicine material located within both the Winkler Center and the Cincinnati Museum Center collections. We will keep you informed as this potential for future collaboration moves forward. Thank you for your interest and support of the Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of Health Professions, one of the gems of the University of Cincinnati Libraries system. Your continued support and contributions have made a difference for the Winkler Center in 2016 and has allowed us to provide lectureships, programming and accessibility to our faculty, researchers, students and colleagues around the globe. We welcome your comments and you are always welcome to stop in for a tour.
