Festivals
A sneak peak There’s a taste of summer’s great lakefront ethnic festivals this month. St. Patrick’s Day brings to mind Milwaukee Irish Fest (Aug. 13-16), while the Winter Pow Wow held by Indian Summer Festival brings that fest’s excitement to Wisconsin State Fair Park, March 14-15. The pow wow includes a marketplace, traditional foods and a Sunday prayer ceremony. And everyone is invited to join in when the emcee announces an “Intertribal Dance.” Milwaukee Irish Fest sponsors year-round Irish cultural events as well as the festival at the Summerfest grounds (irishfest. com). For information on the Pow Wow and Indian Summer Festival Sept. 11-13 at the Summerfest grounds, visit indiansummer.org. 28 keymilwaukee.com
Golf Show Tune up, make plans
It will be some time before Wisconsin’s great golf courses are green again. In the meantime, tune up your game and chat with pros from courses like The Bull and the renovated SentryWorld at the Greater Milwaukee Golf Show, March 13-15 in the Wisconsin Expo Center of State Fair Park. All attendees receive a free round at one of six courses or a discounted round at Brown Deer. 1 p.m.-7 p.m. March 13, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. March 14, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. March 15. 640 S. 84th St.

DRINKS IN THE CITY
Cocktails are crafted at Distil.
A NIGHT OUT The city known for beer also has developed an innovative and creative cocktail culture. 42 keymilwaukee.com
Whether you prefer a seat at the bar or a cozy booth, sleek night spots like Distil (pictured) are the perfect place for a night out. Here and at other upscale locations, small plates are the perfect choice to share with a date
(or new friends). While unique craft cocktails are intriguing, March’s weather makes us reach for a Wisconsin tradition – an Old-Fashioned spiked with Korbel brandy. “Wisconsin is our number one state,” says Margie Healy,

director of public relations for the Californiabased Korbel. “We export 385,000 cases a year, and 139,000 go directly to Wisconsin. That’s one-third of our total production.” While local mixologists often put their own stamp on this Badger state fav, a better way to tap their creativity is ordering from the “craft cocktail” list. At the Rumpus Room, the Lounge Act combines Templeton Rye, Mathilde Blood Orange liqueur, Saler’s Aperitif and lemon juice. Vagabond’s Paloma combines Hacienda Cieja Blanco Tequila, grapefruit juice, Mexican squirt and fresh lime. Craving something sweet? Possibili-
ties include the Packing House’s Limoncello Lemon Pop Martini with Grey Goose Le Citron Vodka, Limoncello di Capri, fresh lemon and simple syrup. Cocktails are a specialty at the Tasting Room bar at Great Lakes Distillery. The adventurous will want to try the absinthes created here, either using the traditional absinthe fountain or in a cocktail. Milwaukee’s brew pubs also pride themselves on the artistry that goes into beer making. The “make mine beer” person in the crowd can take a new favorite brew home in a half-gallon growler from the Milwaukee Ale House and Water Street Brewery.
