Welcome... Milwaukee is referred to often as “America’s best-kept secret.” With its outgoing residents and great events, the city enjoys a growing reputation as a destination. Milwaukee is a city of superb festivals that highlight our history, our natural beauty and our residents’ ethnic backgrounds. We start July with a bang - literally - with our Third of July fireworks celebrating our nation’s independence. That coincides with the final days of Summerfest. But our lakefront Maier Festival Park will continue to host celebrations of culture as Festa Italiana and German Fest take place later in July. Irish Fest and Mexican Fiesta are slated for weekends in August. We take festivals to the streets, too. During the second weekend of July Bastille Days honors French culture in the downtown neighborhood called East Town. Brady Street, just north of downtown hosts its annual festival on the final Saturday of July. The Milwaukee Air and Water Show is back at the lakefront on July 25th and 26th with the Air Force Thunderbirds. Milwaukee is a city that’s always celebrating in the summer.
Greetings and welcome to Milwaukee County! Summer is in full swing in Milwaukee this July. There is no shortage of things to see and experience - especially with nice weather. Following the great time at Summerfest at Henry W. Maeir Festival Park, we have high expectations for Festa Italiana and German Fest at the same lakefront location. Whether you stop by beautiful Bradford Beach for some volleyball or sunbathing, ride your bicycle on the Oak Leaf Trail, or hop over to Bastille Days in Cathedral Park, we know you will enjoy summer in Milwaukee. KEY Milwaukee is a valuable resource for exploring the many activities available to you this month. We hope you enjoy your time in Milwaukee County.

It’s no fluke we’re known for the best seafood in Milwaukee – our chef nets only the freshest catch. But our view of Milwaukee’s shoreline is really the hook, line and sinker. Since its inception in 1998, Milwaukee Downtown (Business Improvement District #21) has worked behind the scenes to make downtown Milwaukee a great place to live, work, play AND visit.

keymilwaukee.com
Funded by commercial property owners within defined geographic boundaries, Milwaukee Downtown improves the quality of life for its residents, employees and visitors through four core programs: Public Service Ambassadors (PSAs) These downtown “walking concierges” welcome leisure and business visitors. Need suggestions on where to dine? Or directions to an event? Just seek out one of the men or women in the blue shirts.
Since 2000, PSAs have delivered more than 9.2 million info packets to downtown visitors. Through the district’s Traveling Information Kiosk (TIK) and Bicycle Information Kiosk (BIK), PSAs have become the go-to resource. Another location to track down a PSA is the Visitor & Newcomer Information Center, 214 W. Wisconsin. Clean Sweep Ambassadors (CSAs) Ongoing Super Block Clean-Ups last year swept up 118,100 gallons of trash in the public right of way. Graffiti Removal Team Along with a private contractor, the team eliminates downtown graffiti within 24 hours of discovery. Last year, they removed approximately 1,500 tags.

THE FUTURE IS
NOW New Milwaukee Downtown initiatives look toward the future of the city: Economic Development A full-time Economic Development Director focuses on retention and expansion of existing businesses and attracts new office and retail tenants to the central business district. Branding Fourth branding campaign will be launched this summer. Retail/Fashion Incubator Assisted with the launch of the MKE Fashion Incubator in March 2015, focusing on fashion design resources and support services to foster industry growth and to expand local opportunities for designers. Parking & Transportation Always advocating an effective, feasible, affordable, accessible, and connected transportation and parking system, the district also administers transportation fairs about how to navigate through the city during construction. Along with partners, the district funds operation of parkmilwaukee. com, a site that allows visitors to preview lots and structures and rates.

Sail into Port Washington’s history at the Exploreum Port Exploreum is a gem of a museum that tells the story of Port Washington through interactive displays, dramatic graphic presentations, a family nautical museum and featured exhibitions. The Exploreum’s historic three-story building was renovated to create a spacious-feeling, open environment. The
original brick walls and wood floors create an intriguing interior, while sweeping views of Lake Michigan from large windows and an outdoor deck help tell the museum’s stories. The Port Washington Historical Society spearheaded the project and operates the Exploreum, located at 118 N. Franklin St., Port Washington. Hours are 10am-5pm, closed Tuesdays and holidays. For more information, visit portexploreum.com or phone (262) 284-2406.

The Brute’s #18, par 4, 464 yards. A monster with water and sand.
Life and golf is Grand Grand Geneva Resort & Spa is all-season family experience The former Playboy Club and then Americana Resort was almost left for dead back in the early 1990s, but under the ownership of THE ‘GRAND’ in Grand Geneva Resort & Spa is no exaggeration.
38 keymilwaukee.com
Milwaukee-based Marcus Corporation, it has come roaring back to become one of the Midwest’s finest all-season entertainment experiences for the whole family. Moreover, with its two meticulously groomed championship golf courses, The Brute and The Highlands, Grand Geneva fits in well with Wiscon-
sin’s growing reputation as an international golf Mecca. Located in Lake Geneva, 45 miles southwest of Milwaukee, the resort provides everything from carriage rides and horseback riding to zip-lining, massages, indoor tennis and basketball, snow skiing and boarding, rock climbing…you
get the picture, a self-contained family playground. But if you must leave the property, downtown Lake Geneva is about a mile away on beautiful and historic…you guessed it…Lake Geneva. Grand Geneva’s just-under 400-room hotel is a sprawling, four-story Frank Lloyd Wright type of building that runs about 3/10 of a mile. It’s easy to get lost in this place and thank God you can park near your room. But since I like to walk, I enjoyed it. The hotel’s expansive and open lobby sits high above the 1,300-acre property, and the vista from the outdoor pool and the top-shelf restaurants is mesmerizing and, some might say, romantic. My roomy and comfortable junior suite was on the first floor with a patio along the fairway of the Brute’s 18th hole. It had a fireplace and two large-screen TVs, plus a TV in the bathroom mirror (kind of like a holograph). I’m not one to watch TV while taking care of ‘business’, but you can, no pun intended. Also, I’m not easy to please when it comes to beds because of a back issue, but this one put me in a trance. Catering to 350-400 golf
The fantastic #12, par 3, 217 yards on the Highlands course. Elevated tee to elevated green makes it almost level.
outings (12 or more players) annually–amazing, considering Wisconsin’s relatively short golf season–the resort’s two courses couldn’t be more different, each with its own challenges. The Brute is…well, a brute. It’s long with large and undulating greens (avg. green size 8,000 sq. ft.), 68 yawning bunkers, and significant elevation changes. #17 (par 4, 420 yards from the tips) & #18 (par 4, 464 yards from the tips) probably are its signature holes: #17 a slight dogleg right from an elevated tee along and over water; #18 a straight monster with bunkers down the right side with water,
STREET EATS
also on the right, the entire length of the hole. The Highlands is shorter with smaller and flatter greens, but has more trees, hollows, and twists and turns. Every hole is picturesque from the tee, and there are several par 4s that might be drivable for the bigger hitters from the blue tees. PGA Professional Kyle Kunash says the par 4, 461 yard (from the tips) #9 is the toughest hole on the property, and I agree. It’s a double dogleg from an elevated tee through a hollow to an elevated green. Despite the stellar facilities, I judge golf courses and resorts in large part based on the people who work there, and these folks take great pride in what they do and how their guests are treated. There’s nothing better than Wisconsin hospitality and value, and that’s why you see so many Illinois plates at the Grand Geneva. Other states can boast of a lot of things, but you’ve got to come to Wisconsin for a Grand time.
