Warmer weather means Milwaukee County visitors can take part in some great outdoor activities. Make your way to Lake Michigan and enjoy biking, skating or sailing at the Milwaukee Sailing Center.
Spring in Milwaukee is a great season. As the winter recedes, people here begin focusing on outdoor activities. That includes enjoying all the fun Milwaukee packs into the warmer months.
What better way to celebrate the outdoors than with Earth Day. Head to one of our many parks on April 20th and celebrate with festival, music and fun. Or see the animals at the Zoo come out and enjoy the great spring weather too. The Brewers hit the field this month, as fans fill Miller Park. Enjoy great food and friends as you cheer on our team.
If the outdoors is not for you, stop at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts for the Milwaukee Ballet Company’s Spring Series. Or enjoy the Milwaukee Art Museum’s special exhibition, “Amazing Folk: Traditions in American Art. Let KEY Milwaukee be your guide to the great opportunities in Milwaukee County as we jump into spring! Sincerely,
Chris Abele, Milwaukee County Executive
Baseball is a big attraction as the Brewers kick off the Major League season. Milwaukee loves baseball, and the springtime offers us all a chance to dream about another winning season.
The lakefront parks in Milwaukee see an influx of visitors. People from out-of-town are amazed by Milwaukee's "fresh coast"– the great vistas and open spaces along Lake Michigan.
And Milwaukee has a growing tradition of urban agriculture including personal vegetable gardens, public spaces dedicated to gardening, and prominent organizations promoting local production of healthy foods.. As the days grow longer and warmer, Milwaukeeans get outside, embracing the spring season. And they participate in activities that make Milwaukee special. Sincerely,
Tom Barrett, Mayor

Key COVER FEATURE
High hopes for 2014 BREWERS By GREGG HOFFMANN Special to KEY Milwaukee
FROM THE PRINCIPAL owner to Hank, the adopted canine mascot, the Milwaukee Brewers are optimistic they can improve on their 74-88 record of last season. "Our overall perception is that other teams in the division got weaker and we got stronger,” Brewers owner and principal owner Mark Attanasio said. “We'll see if that's true, but we clearly got stronger."
More about Hank later, but Attanasio and the Brewers have legitimate reasons to be optimistic. First, Ryan Braun, who was suspended for PED use last season is back and ready to move on. “I made a huge mistake,” Braun said. “I deeply regret it. I wish I could change it.
“I recognize I don’t have an opportunity to do that, so all I can do is focus on the present, focus on the 6
future, look forward to this year and go out there and do the things that I’ve done in the past.”
Braun will move to right field to replace departed Norichika Aoki, and promising Khris Davis is slotted for left field. Carlos Gomez and Jean Segura had breakout seasons in 2013 and hope to continue their All Star caliber performances.
Gomez ended a 31-year drought for the Brewers by winning a Gold Glove in center field and on offense set career highs with .284, 24 home runs and 73 runs batted in.
“Last year was a great year for me,” Gomez said. “I feel real good about the team this year and want to help us win.”
Segura, who hit .294 and finished second in the National League with 44 stolen bases said, “I want to keep improving. I’m a young player (24) and am still learning.”
Aramis Ramirez, who was plagued by injuries last season, returns at third base and, if he can stay healthy, will add to run production.
Questions at second and first base were being addressed in the spring. Scooter Gennett and Rickie Weeks were sharing time at second. A trio of veterans – Juan Francisco, Mark Reynolds and Lyle Overbay – were vying at first.
It’s the second time around for Overbay, who was the first baseman before Prince Fielder came up from the minors. “I feel great here,” Overbay said. “I enjoyed Milwaukee, the organization and fans the first time around and hope I can help the team win.”
Jonathan Lucroy has developed into a team leader at catcher and is backed up by Martin Maldonado.
Veteran Matt Garza has been added to a starting rotation that already included Yovani Gallardo, Kyle Lohse, Willie Peralta, Marco Estrada and perhaps Tyler Thornburg. Several pitchers are in the mix in the bullpen, with Canadian Jim Henderson at closer.
I think we have more depth in pitching than we've had in the past," said GM Doug Melvin. “You can’t have too much pitching.”
As for Hank, the pooch mentioned at the start of this story, he wandered into the Brewers’ spring training camp in Maryvale and immediately endeared himself to the players and fans. They named him after former Brave and Brewer great Hank Aaron. He drew a great deal of national publicity, raced in a Sausage Race (as the real “hot dog”) and added to the overall optimistic, upbeat attitude on the club.
Hank traveled to Milwaukee weeks before the opening game March 31 against the Atlanta Braves and will be living in the home of one of the Brewers’ executives. His “position” during home games this season has yet to be determined.

Brewers open season expecting rebound
THE MILWAUKEE BREWERS start the Major League Baseball season this month with a stronger lineup that could return them to the leadership position enjoyed prior to a disappointing 2013.
"Our overall perception is that other teams in the division got weaker and we got stronger, Brewers owner and principal owner Mark Attanasio said in a KEY Milwaukee exclusive on page 6 of this issue. “We'll see if that's true, but we clearly got stronger." Major changes include Ryan Braun, who returns from his suspension and will shift to right field, and the addition of veteran pitcher Matt Garza to the pitching rotation. Regardless of the weather, the retractable roof of Miller Park ensures that all Brewers home games are played.
The team opens the home season for the first time in March with a game against the Atlanta Braves

Key RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH
Milwaukee Beer Bistro MILWAUKEE BEER BISTRO, a new venture on the city’s upper east side, blends beer with food – what more could you ask for in Brew City?
On the drink side of the menu is a wide range of fresh craft and session beers from across the Badger state, along with carefully selected bottled beers from throughout the U.S. Paired with the brews are unique beer-infused menu items that range from appetizers to small plates to desserts. (Stout ice cream floats, anyone?) This is the latest restaurant offering of Russ Davis, who who also delights diners at the Twisted Fisherman in the heart of downtown and Hubbard Park Lodge in Shorewood. Beer Bistro is located at 2730 N. Humboldt Blvd. in Milwaukee’s eclectic Riverwest neighborhood.
Previously, the Beer Bistro location was the site of Rio West Cantina, also operated by Davis. After a complete re-do of the menu and decor, the Bistro opened to the delight of beer afficionados and foodies.
Lunch is served 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday and dinner is served seven days a week from 5-10 p.m. Weekend Brunch is featured Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. A special Easter Brunch is being planned as well. Live entertainment adds to the fun on Friday and Saturday.
With bratwurst, beer and cheddar chowder on the lunch menu, who can doubt that you’re in Brew City? Or on the salad side, how about smoked salmon, arugula and cherry tomatoes tossed in a Spotted Cow (beer) creamy lemon dill dressing with capers and boursin cheese? Sandwiches include beer-braised turkey with melted cheese, caramelized onion, sweet fig jam, sweet peppered bacon and lettuce and beef short ribs smothered in beerbeque sauce and topped with beer cheese. At dinner, intriguing small plates include Grown Up Chicken Mac and Cheese that features a white cheddar cheese pilsner sauce and roasted red peppers. Gluten-free options include a dish made with a variety of root vegetables braised and tossed in rosemary
brown butter with a hint of gluten-free ale.
Vegans, as well as those eating gluten free, can try the Lemon Grass and Ginger Tofu Cakes – made with tofu, wild rice, lemon grass and Sorghum Ale. (The cakes are seared and topped with roasted red pepper sauce.) Friday means a fish fry in Milwaukee, and the one served here is a stand-out. Try the classic beer battered cod, or try the (locally raised) baked trout. The Beer Bistro brings the same creativity to the weekend brunch offerings. Don’t miss the house made waffles, stirred-up with a Heffe Weiss beer and drenched in beerberry syrup made from Fat Squirrel Ale and blueberries. A gluten-free baked frittata combines eggs with spinach, roasted red peppers, portabella mushrooms, cheese and Sprecher gluten-free ale. (Served with a side of breakfast potatoes and sweet peppered bacon.)

Headed to a Brewers game? Leave the driving to others!
MILWAUKEE’S Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers, is rated as one of the best in baseball by sportswriters and sportscasters and by fans. But unlike some Major League stadiums, it is a few minutes driving time from downtown and not within walking distance of major hotels.
Here are a few tips for first-time visitors and even returning fans: Many hotels and restaurants in downtown Milwaukee and surrounding communities provide shuttles to and from home games. Two of the most popular downtown Milwaukee shuttles depart from The Milwaukee Brat House (the Brat Bus), 1013 N. Old World 3rd St., and Trinity•Three Irish Pubs, 125 E. Juneau Ave. In the Brady Street area, a shuttle for games runs from Jack’s American Pub at 1323 E. Brady St.

Closer to Miller Park is a restaurant that has been shuttling fans to Brewers games since the team arrived in town and played in the old County Stadium. Saz’s State House at 5539 W. State St. is close enough to the stadium to provide a quick getaway for fans in a hurry to return home or to their hotel. Many fans, however, linger at Saz’s to replay the action.
