summer monsoon

S

ummers in Arizona provide visitors and locals alike with one of nature’s most awesome spectacles of power – thunder and lightning storms. The Sonoran Desert is defined by two rainy seasons per year, one of them being the Summer Monsoon. Arizona typically receives about one-half its annual rainfall during this time. Because of this, our desert is considered relatively “wet” when compared to others such as the Sahara. The word “monsoon” comes from the Arabic “mausim” which means “season” or “wind shift” and runs June 15 through September 30.

The Arizona Monsoon is not as strong or persistent as its Indian counterpart, mainly because the Mexican Plateau is not as high or as large as the Tibetan Plateau in Asia. There is a shift in wind patterns in summer which occurs as Mexico and the southwest U.S. warm under intense solar heating. As this happens, the flow reverses. The prevailing winds start to flow from moist ocean areas into dry land areas. The strength of a monsoon can vary greatly from day to day. Some are nothing more than a gentle dust storm, while others produce tremendous thunder. A typical storm starts with high winds and a towering wall of dust that moves across the Valley. It is usually accompanied by heavy thunder and lightning and downpours. In addition to providing the desert with much needed water, the summer monsoon produces some of the most incredible thunder and lightning storms you’ll ever see. A bit of common sense will get you through a monsoon. Don’t cross a wash or road with running water. Take the usual steps to protect yourself from lightning. Slow down when driving. And enjoy nature’s light show in the desert. AZ

publisher’spage EXPLORE THE SOUTH RIM YOUR WAY The Grand Canyon is not only a natural wonder of the world, but has also been named a World Heritage site. There are many ways to enjoy the great chasm that fit perfectly with you. To see great views from your car or the free shuttle bus: Get your first view of Grand Canyon by taking a five-minute walk from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Mather Point. Or, ride the free shuttle buses to see Grand Canyon vistas. From Tusayan hotels, take the Tusayan Route (purple) and transfer in the park to the Kaibab/Rim Route (orange) to access canyon viewpoints and hiking trails. You can also drive 25 miles (40 km) along Desert View Drive. Stop at viewpoints, learn about ancestral Puebloan people at Tusayan Museum, and visit the historic Desert View Watchtower. Finally, view sunrise or sunset by car from Lipan Point on Desert View Drive or ride the Kaibab/Rim Route shuttle bus to Yaki Point.

HERE COMES SANTA

To explore the canyon on foot or bicycle: Walk any portion of the 13-mile (20 km) Rim Trail to see Grand Canyon. Use the free shuttle bus to get back to where you started. You can also hike into Grand Canyon for a different perspective. Take a short hike on the scenic South Kaibab Trail to Cedar Ridge or prepare for a longer day hike on the Bright Angel Trail. Or, bicycle the Greenway Trail to South Kaibab Trailhead or ride Hermit Road to Hermits Rest to feel the wind on your face. Lastly, view sunrise or sunset as you bicycle the Greenway Trail or stroll the Rim Trail to enjoy the light changing on the canyon walls and in the sky. To enjoy the canyon with children: Pick up a Junior Ranger booklet at park visitor centers. Complete fun activities, attend a park ranger program, and earn a badge. You can also learn about Grand Canyon during park ranger programs, such as “natural wonders”, “kids rock!”, or “critter chat”. Be sure your kids get their Junior Ranger booklet signed. Or, walk with your family through historic Grand Canyon Village. Wander through shops, grab a bite to eat, and discover the amazing Kolb brothers at Kolb Studio. Finally, view sunrise or sunset as you stroll the Trail of Time, which begins at Yavapai Geology Museum. In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt said of the Grand Canyon: “Leave it as it is. You cannot improve on it. The ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it. What you can do is to keep it for your children, and for all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American... should see.” You’ve made it this far. I invite you to experience the canyon your way.

earizona is a wildlife park nestled amongst the pristine Ponderosa Pine forests of Northern Arizona. Bearizona is comprised of three main sections; the drive through, walk through and the birds of prey show. The park recommends allotting at least two hours for your Bearizona adventure, but some say they could spend two hours alone watching the bear cubs.

Bearizona invites guests to drive into the Arizona Wilderness and witness herd and pack life from the comfort and safety of their own private vehicle. The drive through portion of the park is three miles long and takes travelers on a self-guided adventure where they will witness wildlife the way it was meant to be, in a natural environment. Enjoy the wide variety of animals including rugged mountain goats, friendly American burros, majestic brown bison, nimble big horn and dall sheep, stealthy Alaskan tundra 16

and arctic wolves, unique white bison and of course beautiful black bears. After the drive through portion, visitors make their way to Fort Bearizona, a walk through area where they enjoy the antics of baby and smaller animals on exhibit including those adorable bear cubs. In this area, guests will also find the Bearizona Barnyard, a petting zoo which houses goats, pigs, chickens, and more, as well as a gift shop and concessions. Guests don’t want to miss the amazing High Country RapArizona KEYMagazine

Sedona and North Central Arizona

aried and vibrant aptly describe the north central region. The famous Red Rocks of Sedona. The bar where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday drank whiskey. The mining town carved on a hillside. With four seasons and something for everyone, this region begs to be seen and will not soon be forgotten.

POPULAR DESTINATIONS INCLUDE: Sedona – Often called “Red Rock Country” Sedona is a four seasons playground for everyone – whether you’re into history and archaeology; arts and culture; power shopping; outdoor sports; or the spiritual and metaphysical, imagine doing all this in a backdrop of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Indeed, this picturesque city is surrounded by red-rock monoliths named Coffeepot, Cathedral and Thunder Mountain. At the north end of the city is the stunning Oak Creek Canyon, a breathtaking chasm that even today, is wildly wonderful. 800-288-7336 Prescott – Just 90 minutes north of Phoenix, “Everybody’s Hometown” is an ideal destination for golfers, outdoor adventure seekers, and western history buffs. From its majestic rock formations at Granite Dells to five area lakes to more than 450 miles of wellgroomed hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, Prescott knows no boundaries for exploring the area’s stunning natural beauty. The downtown Courthouse Plaza is Prescott’s historic heart. The plaza is bordered by the famous Whiskey Row, known to have hosted the likes of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday--and still hosts eclectic boutiques, galleries, antique shops, and restaurants. 800-266-7534 Jerome – After the mines closed in 1953 and “King Copper” left town, the population went from a peak of 15,000 in the 1920s to a low of 50 people. The Jerome Historical Society guarded the buildings against vandalism and the elements, the Douglas Mansion became a

64

State Park in 1965, and Jerome became a National Historic Landmark in 1976. During the 60’s and 70’s, Jerome offered a haven for artists. Soon newcomers and Jerome old timers were working together to bring Jerome back to life. Today, Jerome is very much alive with writers, artists, artisans, musicians, historians, and families. 928-634-2900 AZ

Why Are Sedona’s Rocks

Red?

The answer to one of the most asked questions by Sedona visitors is iron! The incredible array of colors displayed by Sedona’s famous Red Rocks is a direct result of iron oxide in water seeping into sandstone rock formations. Water carrying dissolved iron oxide drains through the porous sandstone and literally paints quartz grains – you guessed it – red! The Red Rocks vary in origin, color and age. Some were originally sea sediment while others came from blowing sand. You’ll see bright orange, red and tan rocks. The brightest orange rocks are more than 250 million

74

years old. White and grey rocks are limestone that formed at the bottom of the sea or sandstone that had its red color washed out by water. You may also stumble across basalt extruded by volcanoes in the past. Sedona and its famous Red Rocks have been in the making for hundreds of millions of years. There are many ways to enjoy the scenery, just be sure to get out and experience Sedona’s world renowned Red Rocks! And remember, take only memories, leave only footprints. AZ

Grand Canyon The

Two Page Grand Canyon: full page text ARTICLE

“The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond comparison--beyond description; absolutely unparalleled throughout the wide world .... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveliness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children’s children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.”
— President Theodore Roosevelt ENJOYING THE SOUTH RIM Individual interests, available time, weather, and health considerations can influence your visit to the South Rim. Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information. Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim. 86

The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon. Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay. VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally. Grand Canyon Visitor Center Located near Mather Point The largest visitor center on the South Rim is a good stop for an introduction to Grand Canyon and for assistance in planning your visit.

Science Staycation Up North BY JAMES RUBERTO

As temperatures continue to rise in Tucson and the Valley of the Sun, may I suggest a science staycation up north to Flagstaff and beyond? A trio of science attractions awaits explorers of all ages, guaranteed to release your inner Neil deGrasse Tyson. There are three must-see stops if you do head north. The first is Lowell Observatory, by far one of my favorite places in Arizona. Lowell Observatory is located one mile west of downtown Flagstaff atop Mars Hill. Founded in 1894 by Percival Lowell, the Observatory offers guided tours that begin at the historic Clark Telescope, purchased and put into operation by founder Percival Lowell in 1896 to aid his studies of Mars. Famous for the discovery of Pluto, the observatory offers daytime tours and nighttime telescope viewing. If you are an astronomy lover like I am, then be sure to visit Lowell. www.lowell.edu The Flagstaff Arboretum is a botanical garden specific to trees. The staff at the Arboretum is dedicated to teaching visitors about the wildlife of Northern Arizona. It is a sanctuary for both native and introduced plants, and is devoted to protecting endangered wildlife of Northern Arizona. The Arboretum is home to many different types of trees, such as Conifers and Aspen. These species have unique adaptations for life in Northern Arizona. For example, some kinds of trees are evergreen, while some are deciduous. Yet, the Arboretum is diverse enough to sustain a variety of life forms. As a tree enthusiast, I had a great time at the Flagstaff Arboretum. The staff was kind and very knowledgeable when answering my questions. The facility itself was very large and let nature thrive. The arboretum is one of my new personal favorite stops when in Northern Arizona. www.thearb.org The third place to visit on your northern adventure is Meteor Crater, located in Northern Arizona off Interstate 40 at exit 233, 35 miles east of Flagstaff, 20 miles west of Winslow. Visit this Natural Landmark and look with wonder at what can happen when the Earth is struck by an asteroid. Meteor Crater is the best preserved meteorite impact site on earth! I have stood at the rim in amazement trying to imagine what the crater impact explosion might have James Ruberto been like. Again, for astronomy and science lovers, Meteor Crater has to be seen. is the 15-yearwww.meteorcrater.com old son of Key

Telescopes, stargazing, trees, wildlife, and a giant crater caused by a meteor exploding‌ what more could you ask for? These are great things for kids of all ages. Science rocks! AZ Arizona KEYMagazine

Pool Parties BY DANIELLE RUBERTO

Since deciding to take a semester off to further explore my graduate school options, I found myself with a bit of time on my hands and have started enjoying the social life in metro Phoenix. So, I want to share some great Scottsdale pool parties with my fellow twentysomethings (and up). The first can’t-miss is Release at Talking Stick Resort. Release is the perfect way to celebrate the weekend in style. Enjoy drink specials, promotional giveaways, cabana rentals and more. Cabanas and Daybeds are in high-demand, so those interested should book early by contacting Reservations at (866) 877-9897. Release features live DJ’s from 11am to 5pm. Don’t miss poolside performances by the best DJs from Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego, Miami, San Francisco, and all over the world. The parties are from 11am to 6pm on Saturdays and Sunday through summer, with hours subject to vary on concert nights.

10:00-5:00 and drinks are served from 10:00-6:00. Pool parties are the perfect way to cool off this summer. I’ll see you there in my big hat! AZ

Also enticing is the W’s WET pool party. Monday through Wednesday they offer a relaxing vibe, but Thursday through Sunday they offer an energetic atmosphere with live music and events. The Wet Deck is where one can go for a swim or hang out at the W’s iconic rooftop WET pool. Enjoy stunning views of Scottsdale in the comfort of your own W lounge chair or private luxury cabana. Abandon the expected and sample creative poolside cuisine and signature cocktails by Shade Lounge. Mix and mingle every Saturday and Sunday afternoon, from 12PM to 5PM, with a DJ spinning the latest beats. Cover charge will apply for non-hotel guests. If you’re interested in relaxing in a daybed or cabana, please call 480 970 2101 for the reservation. The third adventure is the OH pool at Hotel Valley Ho. On Happy Hour Fridays, the band Elvis Before Noon plays a mix of originals and class covers from 3:00 to 6:00. Enjoy good specials from 10:00-6:00 and drink specials from 10:00-7:00, including select cocktails for $6, $4 beer, and $16 beer pails. On Session Saturdays, DJ Mr. P-Body spins new and old hits from 1:30-5:30. Enjoy food specials from 10:00-5:00 and drink specials from 10:00-6:00, including select cocktails for $6, $4 beer, and $16 beer pails. And on City Sundays, eight cocktails representing eight different cities are featured at $6 each. Food is served from ArizonaKEY.com

corner Arizona Visitors Ask…? BY JOHNNY FENTON, M.A. CONCIERGE, OMNI TUCSON NATIONAL RESORT

A visitor to cactus country? The concierges are often a key to finding answers to guests’ questions and giving them the scoop on the Southwest’s diverse offerings. This column includes some of our tourists’ most frequent queries and these area travel authorities’ replies.

Q. Any ideas on decompressing from career and school pressures this summer? A. Harvard and University of California research indicates we’ll soon be able to get blood transfusions from younger donors that will reinvigorate our bodies’ muscle mass and brain power. (Mickey Mouse must be ecstatic at 86 since some experiments were done with mice!) Or the less painful option is to slow down suggests physician Bill Thomas in his book Second Wind: Navigating the Passage to a Slower and Deeper Connected Life. Many of us have a need for speed in this world of fast cars, fast food, fast conversation and fast holidays. I was surprised to learn that in addition to slow-food and slow-medicine (holistic) movements, there are slow money and slow city advocates. Such a vacationtopia awaits you in the tri-town area of Snowflake-TaylorShumway in the Northern Arizona foothills of the White Mountains, home to some 8,000 residents. How often can you enjoy the slow sport of golf, playing on a 27-hole municipal course next to a Mormon Temple? It seems credible in a town founded in 1878 by two Mormon pioneers Erastus Snow and Jordan Flake. Head over to Celebrations for delicious lunches or High Tea with scones and quiches in a charming antique-laden historic setting. Take a walking tour of historic homes and stores in Snowflake and Taylor’s schoolhouse built of locally-fired soft red brick and the Taylor Pioneer Museum featuring a Conestoga wagon and the Jennings drum brought to Utah by Mormon founder Brigham Young which is played every Fourth of July before “The Firing of the Anvil.” Take a short scenic drive through residential Shumway with homes dotting the canyon perimeter and sheep grazing in the meadows below. Then drive up to the Heritage Inn Bed and Breakfast, voted one of the best places in Arizona to hit the hay. After sampling their German pancakes, Kirsten Dunst of Spider-Man fame was convinced to stay another night! Uplifting and transformative-- a unique net in which you can ensnare the sky, hangs suspended above guests at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMOCA) in Central Arizona. Knight Rise is the latest Skyscape created by internationally- recognized Arizona artist James Turrell. Seat yourself on the bench that rims the enclosure in the Schwalm Sculpture Courtyard and time stands still. The lights imbedded in the walls beneath the elliptical opening subtly shift and summon the optical illusion that the sky is covering the viewer like a blanket. This free exhibit is a vital example of the metro Phoenix-area public art. Turrell’s optical observatory (begun in 1970) near Flagstaff near

the mouth of an extinct volcano at Roden Crater continues to be his longest-running project. www. smoca.org If you are seeking a still place in a turning world, northwest of Tucson in Southern Arizona you can find it at Sanctuary Cove, for your personal meditative and reflective needs. Surrounded by the beauty of the Tucson Mountains and at the base of Sombrero Peak, it was founded in 1957 on the principles of Oneness by a WWI vet Elmer Staggs who came to Arizona for his health. Its grounds, stone chapel, trails, Labyrinth and seating areas are offered free of charge to all races, creeds and personal beliefs, dedicated to keeping folk emotionally and physically fit . The Cove is a popular Saguaro National Park trail head. Its Labyrinth is a classic seven-circuit style offered in many countries and used by many cultures. The 80-acre park residents include deer, javelinas, coyotes, foxes and an occasional snake. 8001 N. Scenic Drive in Tucson (520) 744-2375. And finally, why not treat yourself to that decadent invention that allows you to have breakfast goodies after 10 a.m. and alcohol before noon on the weekends—brunch! I love the latkes at Shlomo and Vitos (breakfast all day) on the Northside (520) 529-3354 and the Mimosas and the Cast Iron Baked eggs, with Gruyere cheese and ham at The Cup in the historic Hotel Congress downtown (520) 798-1618. And perhaps you’ll Festina Lente! Hurry more slowly. AZ
