S

now in Arizona? Surely you jest? Here’s a quick guide for those craving some of the white stuff!

Mount Lemmon is in the Santa Catalina Mountains located in the Coronado National Forest north of Tucson. It is 9,157 feet above sea-level, and receives approximately 180 inches of snow annually. The drive up the beautiful Catalina Highway traverses four completely different ecological strata. From saguaro cactus at the bottom, to the pine and aspen groves at the top, the drive is breathtaking. During this time of year, you can leave the warm Tucson climate, go skiing or sledding for the day, and be back in the desert before dark!

The White Mountains along the Arizona - New Mexico border are the state’s second highest range. Pinetop-Lakeside and Springerville-Eagar along the northern edge of the range provide the most popular access points. Take a trip to the White Mountains and experience a real Arizona winter. Ski, tube or sled down snowcovered hills and then get warm by a fire. Located 220 miles east of Phoenix and 250 miles north of Tucson, this recreational winter wonderland is not to be missed.

North of Flagstaff at 12,643 feet, the San Francisco Peaks is not only the dominant feature of the forest area known as the Volcanic Highlands, it’s also the highest mountain in Arizona. Three of the summits that ring this dormant volcano’s now quiet inner caldera are higher than any other mountain in the state. This mountain is sacred to the native peoples that live in the area and its soaring profile set against a blue Arizona sky serves as a source of awe to visitors. Hiking, sightseeing, wildlife watching and skiing are the predominant recreation activities enjoyed in this land of mountains, forests and lava flows.

The Grand Canyon shows its beautiful, moody side this time of year.

Under a blanket of snow, she lays very still. This quietude typifies the canyon in winter and allows one to experience her grandeur as if transported back in time. During winter the air is crisp and the views are sharp. Package a number of Arizona joys into one experience… head to Williams and take the Grand Canyon Railway up to this natural wonder of the world for the day. The Grand Canyon will not disappoint. AZ

Whether you walk it, bike it, drive it, or ride a horse through it, one thing is certain; make time to visit South Mountain Park, the pride of Phoenix!

At more than 16,000 acres, South Mountain Park/Preserve is the largest municipal park in the country, according to the Trust for Public Land.

It boasts 51 miles of primary trails for horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking for all ability levels. From the park’s main entrance, you can drive up the Summit Road 5.5 miles to Dobbins Lookout and spectacular valleywide views or you can continue to the Gila Lookout for a view of the Gila River Valley. This scenic road is shared by bikers and hikers and there are many steep sections and blind curves, so maximum speed is 25 mph and just 15 mph on curves.

HERE COMES SANTA

The history of South Mountain Park/Preserve as a city park dates back to 1924. Prominent local citizens, with the help of Sen. Carl Hayden, bought 13,000 acres from the federal government for $17,000. In 1935 the National Park Service developed a master plan for the park with riding and hiking trails, picnic areas and overlooks, all in rustic regional character. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built many of the facilities in the park, based on this master plan. Visitation at the park has gone from 3,000 a month in 1924 to an estimated three million a year today.

It is important to remember that the Phoenix mountain preserves are open, undeveloped desert areas. Please use care when heading out as hikers can encounter rocky terrain, rattlesnakes and other potential hazards native to the Sonoran Desert. If you encounter a rattlesnake, allow it space and time to escape. South Mountain Park is also notable for its chuckwalla population. With an average of 65 chuckwallas per hectare, South Mountain has the highest density of chuckwallas that has ever been reported. Further, male chuckwallas at South Mountain exhibit a “carrot tail” phenotype, which is unique to this population.

South Mountain Park/Preserve actually consists of three mountain ranges, the Ma Ha Tauk, Gila and Guadalupe. They stretch diagonally from northeast to southwest. Diagonal mountain ranges that protrude from desert floors, like those of South Mountain, are typical features of the Sonoran Desert. Various minerals were mined in the park in the early 1900s before its birth as a park.

Why Are Sedona’s Rocks

Red?

The answer to one of the most asked questions by Sedona visitors is iron!

The incredible array of colors displayed by Sedona’s famous Red Rocks is a direct result of iron oxide in water seeping into sandstone rock formations. Water carrying dissolved iron oxide drains through the porous sandstone and literally paints quartz grains – you guessed it – red!

The Red Rocks vary in origin, color and age. Some were originally sea sediment while others came from blowing sand. You’ll see bright orange, red and tan rocks.

The brightest orange rocks are more than 250 million

years old. White and grey rocks are limestone that formed at the bottom of the sea or sandstone that had its red color washed out by water.

You may also stumble across basalt extruded by volcanoes in the past.

Thunderbird Artists A Family Affair

J

udi Combs can relate to the participating artists in Thunderbird Artists festivals art is in her blood. She started by participating in small art shows and then, in 1981, Judi’s love for art grew into producing awardwinning fine art and wine festivals.

Combs stated, “Thunderbird Artists began in parking lots with a small group of artists and a loyal following. I hoped, but never imaged Thunderbird Artists would become so successful.”

Denise Dale, Judi’s daughter, joined the business in 1986 and has become an integral part of Thunderbird Artists, taking numerous awards and accolades. Judi’s husband, Roger, sons, Mike and Bret, and grandson, Dustin Bulot, complete the family circle, working throughout the festivals, from set-up to tear down.

For years, artists encouraged Judi to expand her business and produce a ten-week event with artists’ working in studios. Knowing the commitment, time involvement and project size, Judi knew she needed someone loyal who understood and cared about the artists. “Partnering with my brother, Dennis, and sister-in-law, Judy, just made perfect sense.” comments Combs. In 2005, The Arizona Fine Art EXPO was born!

Running two businesses left little time for anything else, but Judi felt very strongly that she wanted to give back to US Veterans, who had so bravely fought for our great country. In 2009, the 501c3, non-profit charity, American Healing Arts Foundation was launched, providing free art classes for U.S. Veterans.

Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information.

Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night.

The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently.

Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March.

Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim.

The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon.

Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay.

VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally.

Grand Canyon Visitor Center Located near Mather Point The largest visitor center on the South Rim is a good stop for an introduction to Grand Canyon and for assistance in planning your visit.

It’s that time of year again... the annual Arizona Renaissance Festival starts this month! Welcome to the greatest party since Camelot (which I know more about since reading The Once and Future King). The Festival is an explosion of sights and sounds in a 30 acre village with the King and His court, castles and cottages, shops and pubs, and over 200 artisans with open air shops, plus thirteen stages of non-stop music, dance, swordplay and comedy to enchant every age.

Last year, dad and I indulged in The Pleasure Feast, the most exclusive event at the Festival! Savor five courses of fine foods and ample drink, served with a side order of live music, raucous entertainment and Festival souvenirs in the Fairhaven Feast Hall. Be treated like royalty as the King’s kitchen and the Feast Master dish up a roaring good time. And don’t forget the games, rides, wooden swords, and turkey legs. That’s right, I said turkey legs! Here are answers to commonly asked questions: What are the dates and hours of the Festival? The Festival is open Saturdays, Sundays and Presidents’ Day Monday, from February 8th to March 30th. Festival hours are 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM. What is the cost of admission? Advance discount tickets available at Fry’s are $20 for adults, $10 for kids ages 5 –12, and children under 5 are always FREE. Tickets purchased at the Festival Box Office are $2 more. Discount tickets for seniors (60 and older) are $19, only available at the Festival Box Office.

What does the admission price include? Free parking, all entertainment shows, including the Tournament Jousting and Birds of Prey show. You may choose to purchase arts and crafts items, food or beverage, or enjoy some rides and games (costs vary).

‘Tis the SSAGUARO eason THE MIGHTY

I highly recommend a visit to Saguaro National Park where you can learn about and come to appreciate the Mighty Saguaro in its natural environment. For more information, visit www.nps.gov/sagu or call The mighty Saguaro grows only in the Sonoran Desert, an arid desert region the Rincon Mountain District defined by two rainy seasons per year that supports a tremendous amount of biological diversity. The range is determined by temperature and elevation - the Visitor Center at (520) 7335153 or the Tucson Mountain absence of freezing in the winter and from sea level to about 4000 feet.

The roots grow out from the plant in a radial fashion several inches under the ground. During heavy rains such as the monsoons, the Saguaro will absorb a significant amount of water. To accommodate this sudden influx, the pleats of the cactus expand like an accordion. Most of the plant is made up of water and as mentioned above, the weight approaches 6 tons! To support this, the inside of the cactus is a circular skeleton of woody ribs.

In late April thru early June, the tops of the Saguaro’s trunk and arms sprout a dizzying array of large, creamy white flowers that open at night and close the following afternoon. Pollination must occur during this time by nectar feeding bats, birds and insects. Each fruit contains a few thousand small black seeds. Eaten by coyote or cactus wren, the seeds pass through the digestive system unharmed throughout the desert. Biologists believe that the plant produces 40 million seeds during its lifetime, with only a few surviving to adulthood.

A visitor to cactus country? The concierges are often a key to finding answers to guests’ questions and giving them the scoop on the Southwest’s diverse offerings. This column includes some of our tourists’ most frequent queries and these area travel authorities’ replies.

Q. What is your idea of a perfect day spent here?

A. “Today comes to us flawless at midnight. It is placed perfectly clean into our hands hoping we’ve learned something from yesterday.” This sentiment expressed by John Wayne is no less true today. While we generally try to tailor this to our visitors’ inclinations, often they really want to know about places my colleagues and I treasure for ourselves—some of which are not on all the maps and vary with the seasons, but for now….

It’s 7:30 a.m. on this perfect day in Northern Arizona. Colleen is serving up lemon ricotta pancakes and Huevos Rancheros at my table in the Mesa Grill next to the Sedona Airport, billed as “America’s most scenic airport.” This little glass-encased eatery has no walls, affording its patrons spectacular views of sunrises and sunsets over the mesa on which the Airport perches. Nostalgia brings me to this one-runway airport and warm memories of the exhilarating red biplane excursion my husband and I took over Boynton Canyon from its terminal. www.sedonaairport.org Before leaving this land of red rock artistry, I would return to walk the labyrinth behind the charming Lodge at Sedona situated on a 50-acre estate and open to the general public. One of the largest in the U.S.A., this labyrinth affords a spiritual and meditative space with views of the area’s spectacular mountains and mesas.

Many would put shopping on their agenda for the perfect day in Phoenix with half a dozen outlet malls in the vicinity and most of the major chains in this the sixth largest city in the country. Others would choose a day on the greens with over 250 golf courses in the area to choose from year ‘round where PGA, Senior PGA and LPGA events are held. And a perfect cocktail spot away from the tourists in a city noted for nightlife is a sacred quest which leads some of my Phoenix metro area concierge associates to the Citizens Public House time and again for their perfect hand-crafted Ketel One vodka martini generously poured (daily happy hours 3-6 p.m.) Located next to the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art this denizen for artists serves some creative bar bites as well, including bacon popcorn and roasted rosemary nuts. The master mixologist and manager Thomas Stratton infuses magic in his potions. Now my perfect day in Central Arizona would include a visit with grandkids Cynthia and Evan in Mesa, and a trip to Organ Stop Pizza, a local town landmark since 1972 where Charlie and Lew have each been taking requests for more than twenty-five years on one of the world’s largest Wurlitzer organs. (I always request “Thriller.”)

This magnificent instrument with over 6,000 pipes and percussions was built in 1927 for the Denver Theater. It fell silent after talking films replaced the silent

movies and the Great Depression of the 1930’s halted most entertainment. www.OrganStopPizza. com Their Spicy Italian pizza, potato bacon soup and caramel turtle fudge ice cream don’t take a back seat to the entertainment either.

And in Tucson surrounded by five mountain ranges, the opportunities abound for wrestling a problem to the ground by hiking or walking it off. Walking also sharpens my senses to the sounds of birds, the small variations in plants and rocks that are blurred by the speed of other forms of transportation. My favorite places to stroll at a Pleistocene gait are Sabino Canyon, the University of Arizona campus and Tumamoc Hill. But being a people person I also vote for February as the perfect month for festivals, fiestas and showcases in Southern Arizona. From a long list, my favorites are: the Cochise Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering in Sierra Vista; the Tubac Festival of the Arts in Tubac; La Reunion de el Fuerte; and the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show in Tucson. Still chasing perfection just before putting on my PJs, I’m compelled to seek out a view of the night skies here in the astronomy capital of the world. My favorite haunt for a quick starlight cocktail on a clear Friday or Saturday night is Starizona, a small telescope shop on Tucson’s northwest side where stargazers can peer into outer space through Celestron telescopes at no charge asking questions of astronomy experts and enthusiasts at no charge.
