summer monsoon

S

ummers in Arizona provide visitors and locals alike with one of nature’s most awesome spectacles of power – thunder and lightning storms. The Sonoran Desert is defined by two rainy seasons per year, one of them being the Summer Monsoon. Arizona typically receives about one-half its annual rainfall during this time. Because of this, our desert is considered relatively “wet” when compared to others such as the Sahara. The word “monsoon” comes from the Arabic “mausim” which means “season” or “wind shift” and runs June 15 through September 30.

The Arizona Monsoon is not as strong or persistent as its Indian counterpart, mainly because the Mexican Plateau is not as high or as large as the Tibetan Plateau in Asia. There is a shift in wind patterns in summer which occurs as Mexico and the southwest U.S. warm under intense solar heating. As this happens, the flow reverses. The prevailing winds start to flow from moist ocean areas into dry land areas. The strength of a monsoon can vary greatly from day to day. Some are nothing more than a gentle dust storm, while others produce tremendous thunder. A typical storm starts with high winds and a towering wall of dust that moves across the Valley. It is usually accompanied by heavy thunder and lightning and downpours. In addition to providing the desert with much needed water, the summer monsoon produces some of the most incredible thunder and lightning storms you’ll ever see. A bit of common sense will get you through a monsoon. Don’t cross a wash or road with running water. Take the usual steps to protect yourself from lightning. Slow down when driving. And enjoy nature’s light show in the desert. AZ

publisher’spage THE NORTH RIM & GRAND CANYON LODGE

Nearly five million people see Grand Canyon each year. A much smaller number of people see the Canyon from the North Rim, which lies just 10 miles (as the condor flies) directly across the Canyon from the South Rim. The North Rim rises a thousand feet higher than the South Rim, and is much less accessible. Heavy snows close the road to the North Rim from late October to mid May of each year. Even in good weather it’s harder to get to: it’s 220 miles by car from the South Rim, or 21 miles by foot across the Canyon by way of the North and South Kaibab Trails. Sitting atop the Kaibab Plateau, 8,000 to 9,000 feet above sea level with lush green meadows surrounded by a mixed conifer forest sprinkled with white-barked aspen, the North Rim is an oasis in the desert. Here you may observe deer feeding, a coyote chasing mice in the meadows, a mother turkey leading her young across the road, or a mountain lion slinking off into the cover of the forest.

HERE COMES SANTA

Visitors in the spring may see remnants of winter in disappearing snowdrifts or temporary mountain lakes of melted snow. The summer with colorful wildflowers and intense thunderstorms comes and goes all too quickly, only to give way to the colors of fall. With the yellows and oranges of quaking aspen and the reds of Rocky Mountain maple, the forest seems to glow. Crispness in the air warns of winter snowstorms soon to come. The North Rim offers a very different visitor experience. Solitude, awe-inspiring views, a slower pace, and the feeling of going back in time are some of the many attributes the North Rim has to offer. Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim of Grand Canyon is often the first prominent feature visitors see, even before viewing the canyon. The highway ends at the lodge. The lodge’s sloped roof, huge ponderosa beams, and massive limestone facade fit its 8,000-foot setting, but where is Grand Canyon? To experience the full impact of the design of the lodge, take the historic route. Go through the front entrance. Walk across the carpeted lobby and descend a stairwell. Shining through great windows across the sun room is the much-anticipated first view of Grand Canyon. Welcome to Arizona. I invite you to discover the uniqueness of the Grand Canyon’s North Rim.

Sedona and North Central Arizona

aried and vibrant aptly describe the north central region. The famous Red Rocks of Sedona. The bar where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday drank whiskey. The mining town carved on a hillside. With four seasons and something for everyone, this region begs to be seen and will not soon be forgotten.

POPULAR DESTINATIONS INCLUDE: Sedona – Often called “Red Rock Country” Sedona is a four seasons playground for everyone – whether you’re into history and archaeology; arts and culture; power shopping; outdoor sports; or the spiritual and metaphysical, imagine doing all this in a backdrop of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Indeed, this picturesque city is surrounded by red-rock monoliths named Coffeepot, Cathedral and Thunder Mountain. At the north end of the city is the stunning Oak Creek Canyon, a breathtaking chasm that even today, is wildly wonderful. 800-288-7336 Prescott – Just 90 minutes north of Phoenix, “Everybody’s Hometown” is an ideal destination for golfers, outdoor adventure seekers, and western history buffs. From its majestic rock formations at Granite Dells to five area lakes to more than 450 miles of wellgroomed hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, Prescott knows no boundaries for exploring the area’s stunning natural beauty. The downtown Courthouse Plaza is Prescott’s historic heart. The plaza is bordered by the famous Whiskey Row, known to have hosted the likes of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday--and still hosts eclectic boutiques, galleries, antique shops, and restaurants. 800-266-7534 Jerome – After the mines closed in 1953 and “King Copper” left town, the population went from a peak of 15,000 in the 1920s to a low of 50 people. The Jerome Historical Society guarded the buildings against vandalism and the elements, the Douglas Mansion became a

State Park in 1965, and Jerome became a National Historic Landmark in 1976. During the 60’s and 70’s, Jerome offered a haven for artists. Soon newcomers and Jerome old timers were working together to bring Jerome back to life. Today, Jerome is very much alive with writers, artists, artisans, musicians, historians, and families. 928-634-2900 AZ

The answer to one of the most asked questions by Sedona visitors is iron! The incredible array of colors displayed by Sedona’s famous Red Rocks is a direct result of iron oxide in water seeping into sandstone rock formations. Water carrying dissolved iron oxide drains through the porous sandstone and literally paints quartz grains – you guessed it – red! The Red Rocks vary in origin, color and age. Some were originally sea sediment while others came from blowing sand. You’ll see bright orange, red and tan rocks. The brightest orange rocks are more than 250 million

74

years old. White and grey rocks are limestone that formed at the bottom of the sea or sandstone that had its red color washed out by water. You may also stumble across basalt extruded by volcanoes in the past. Sedona and its famous Red Rocks have been in the making for hundreds of millions of years. There are many ways to enjoy the scenery, just be sure to get out and experience Sedona’s world renowned Red Rocks! And remember, take only memories, leave only footprints. AZ

Grand Canyon The

Two Page Grand Canyon: full page text ARTICLE

“The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond comparison--beyond description; absolutely unparalleled throughout the wide world .... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveliness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children’s children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.”
— President Theodore Roosevelt ENJOYING THE SOUTH RIM Individual interests, available time, weather, and health considerations can influence your visit to the South Rim. Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information. Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim. 86

The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon. Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay. VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally. Grand Canyon Visitor Center Located near Mather Point The largest visitor center on the South Rim is a good stop for an introduction to Grand Canyon and for assistance in planning your visit.

Too Hot? Head South! BY JAMES RUBERTO Sure, I know that heading south to escape the blistering heat of July may sound counterintuitive, but at a cool elevation of 9159 feet, Mount Lemmon offers weary desert dwellers a much needed respite. The highest point in the Santa Catalina Mountains, this summer retreat is located in the Coronado National Forest north of Tucson. Known for winter fun, the Mount Lemmon Ski Valley, on the mountain’s northeastern side, receives 200 inches of snow each year and is the southernmost point for skiing in the continental United States. However, the mountain offers year-round fun. Summerhaven, a small town near the top of the mountain, is a summer residence for many. The Catalina Highway, also called the Mount Lemmon Highway, runs up the Santa Catalina Mountains from the east side of Tucson up to Summerhaven. The beautiful, curving road is a favorite drive for tourists, locals escaping summer’s heat, and cyclists. It has been recently designated as the Sky Island Parkway, part of the US National Scenic Byway system. For the more adventuresome, a dirt “access” road to the summit on the “back side” of Mount Lemmon starts in Oracle, which is on state highway 77 northeast of Tucson. It offers a secondary route to the top and is popular with off-road 4x4 drivers and with off-road or dual-purpose motorcyclists. This road ends at the Catalina Highway near Loma Linda. Before the Catalina Highway was built it was the only route up the mountain. Once the top is reached, there’s plenty to do for people of all ages. The ski lift runs year round, as a “Sky Ride” experience in the summertime, offering views of the Ski Valley area, forest and grass-covered slopes, as well as long distance vistas of the mountains and valleys north of the Santa Catalinas. At the peak is the Mount Lemmon Observatory, where telescopes on the mountain are still used for astronomical research today. Looking for food? The Grub Stake is a patio cafe open on certain weekends during the summer and serves up hamburgers, hot dogs and bowls of steaming hot chili. Named for the infamous lost mine with the iron door, the Iron Door restaurant serves wonderful food and drinks with unsurpassed views. As for the mine itself, legend states that Jesuit Padres ran a gold mine in the Catalina Mountains during the 1700s. I continue to be amazed at the history of the Jesuits. My school, Brophy College Prep, was founded by this religious James Ruberto teaching order. And, if you read my sister’s article on the next page, you’ll learn that the is the 14-yearJesuits also founded the San Xavier Mission del Bac. My apologies for the tangent.

So, if temperatures in the Valley of the Sun climb too high, then do the unexpected and head south to Mount Lemmon. I’ll be there… hanging out with the astronomers! AZ

corner White Dove of the Desert BY DANIELLE RUBERTO

During a recent trip to watch friends graduate at the University of Arizona, I made a point during my free time to take in a few attractions I had missed during my undergraduate years. One of these wonderful sights is the historical Mission San Xavier del Bac. Just a short 7-mile drive south of Tucson stands one of the most beautifully preserved Spanish Missions in the Southwest. Founded in 1692 by Jesuit priest and explorer Father Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino, it is situated in the center of a Papago Indian settlement along the banks of the Santa Cruz River. The church continues to serve the Tohono O’odham, the native people of this land. It has been acclaimed by authorities to be the finest example of mission architecture in the United States, gracefully blending Moorish, Byzantine and late Mexico Renaissance. The entire structure is itself a series of domes and arches, with wood only employed in window and door frames.

Lighting a candle represents someone’s intention/prayer to God when lit and left in the church. The genuine beauty, inside and out, of the Mission San Xavier del Bac truly must be seen in person. For further information and directions to the wonderful Mission, please call (520) 2942624. AZ

A prominent part of the Mission’s facade is the entryway: the Franciscan coat-of-arms with the monograms of Jesus and Mary on either side. The four figures in niches are believed to represent St. Barbura, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Cecilia and St. Lucy. Also on this astonishing entryway is a cat on one side and a mouse on the other. Legend has it that if the cat ever catches the mouse, the end of the world is upon us. The inside of the church is also purely breathtaking. The interior measures 98 feet 6 inches by 21 feet 7 inches. Within the church stands the retable (or altar background), which is considered the finest example of a Spanish retable north of Mexico. Made up of eight columns and built entirely of burned brick, it is covered with gilded and painted plaster embellishments. Also inside is an incredible mural of the Last Supper amongst the elegant pews. The museum at the Mission that explains more about our history with artifacts. The best way to start your experience is to begin with a 20 minute video which talks about the history of the Mission and its restoration. Then walk through the museum and look at the artifacts that give you a sense of the history and the way people lived here at the Mission. Our museum is free and open to the public 8:30am - 4:30pm daily. The Mission has a gift shop that has all kinds of ideas to commemorate your visit to Mission San Xavier. There are a wide array of items from t-shirts to authentic Tohono O’odham basket made right on the reservation.

corner Arizona Visitors Ask…? BY JOHNNY FENTON, M.A. CONCIERGE, OMNI TUCSON NATIONAL RESORT A visitor to cactus country? The concierges are often a key to finding answers to guests’ questions and giving them the scoop on the Southwest’s diverse offerings. This column includes some of our tourists’ most frequent queries and these area travel authorities’ replies.

Q. Visiting Grandkids?…Memories in the Making A. The opinion that no one is perfect is most likely held by those who’ve never had grandchildren! One of my oldest reference books is Will Roger’s “How to Hold an Audience without a Rope.” Well the perfect captive audience scenario in Northern Arizona for a retro adventure with chat time galore for you “family historians” while taking in fabulous pine-forested scenery -- is a ride on the Grand Canyon Railway. And a special historic Pullman Class of service has just been added to the other five classes. These restored 1923 vintage cars feature seats that flip so families can face each other , and windows that open to let in the good ol’ country air (because there was no AC in days gone by.) A service attendant is always available to share tales of travel the train’s history and help you plan your visit to the Canyon. And Western entertainers serenade passengers along the journey. (Other cars are air conditioned.) (928)213-3844. Recommended in a terrific book “Grandparent Arizona Style” is the Arizona Science Center in downtown Phoenix with over 300 interactive exhibits for kids from 5 to 105! Exhibits including the SkyCycle, Climbing Wall and IMAX required added fees. Bonding opportunities abound in this Central Arizona gem including “reading people’s emotions by their facial expressions” in the Psychology Gallery. Try it out on each other. Science Saturdays allow you to sit in with museum staff and learn hands-on about a topic with your 6 to10- year-old grandchildren. This is a best bet when summer temperatures outside in the Valley are toasting ‘yer boots. www.azsciencecenter.org A hands-on time travel treat is in store for the creative grandparent who sees a golden opportunity to chat about the stuff of life in the Old West on a junket through an antique store like The Town Dump, a wild and crazy emporium of primitives and vintage hardware, cookery, farm equipment and artisan conversation pieces in Cave Creek at Malfunction Junction north of Phoenix www.towndump.net. Then Glendale in the metro Phoenix area has been dubbed “Arizona’s Antique Capital” with more than 70 antique stores for everything from collector’s coins to military uniforms and medals dating to the western most battle of the Civil War fought on Arizona’s Picacho Peak in 1862! You might get to hear the gripping tale of “Mr. Tiger Goes Wild” during Story 96

Time at Mildred and Dildred’s toy shop on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Tucson as La Encantada. That is, if you’re grandchildren are wee (four and under.) Throughout the year, this little shop of charming (non-electronic) and mindexpanding toys is like a journey down the rabbit hole with Alice. www.mildredanddildred.com. The 15th annual Peach Festival at Apple Annie’s in Willcox (July 19-20, 26-27) gives most children a unique experience, not having a lifestyle that requires picking food for the evening meal. Guaranteed are lasting memories of the smells, colors, textures and taste of nibbled samples and the effort involved. The mild winter promises a bumper crop during peach season all month at this Southern Arizona you-pick-it farm. Join in an all- you-can-eat Pancake & Peaches breakfasts on the weekends not to mention fresh peach pie, homemade peach ice cream and apple-smoked burgers for lunch. Chats about “organic” foods and plans to peek in at the Rex Allen [cowboy] Museum downtown can be hatched on free wagon rides to and from the orchards. Dozens of peach products deck the gift shop at this wonderful old you pick it farms. www.appleannies.com While you’ve been mindful during their visit that grandparents are the footprints to future generations; after the last hug and bye-bye wave in the driveway, it’s well-earned hammock time for reverie and rest… AZ [Johnny Fenton—a 35-year resident of Tucson—is past President of the Southern Arizona Concierge Network, member of the National Concierge Association, and Les Clefs d’Or.
