explore north rim
N
early five million people see Grand Canyon each year. A much smaller number of people see the Canyon from the North Rim, which lies just 10 miles (as the condor flies) directly across the Canyon from the South Rim. The North Rim rises a thousand feet higher than the South Rim, and is much less accessible. Heavy snows close the road to the North Rim from late October to mid May of each year. Even in good weather it’s harder to get to: it’s 220 miles by car from the South Rim, or 21 miles by foot across the Canyon by way of the North and South Kaibab Trails. Sitting atop the Kaibab Plateau, 8,000 to 9,000 feet above sea level with lush green meadows surrounded by a mixed conifer forest sprinkled with white-barked aspen, the North Rim is an oasis in the desert. Here you may observe deer feeding, a coyote chasing mice in the meadows, a mother turkey leading her young across the road, or a mountain lion slinking off into the cover of the forest. Visitors in the spring may see remnants of winter in disappearing snowdrifts or temporary mountain lakes of melted snow. The summer with colorful wildflowers and intense thunderstorms comes and goes all too quickly, only to give way to the colors of fall. With the yellows and oranges of quaking aspen and the reds of Rocky Mountain maple, the forest seems to glow. Crispness in the air warns of winter snowstorms soon to come. The North Rim offers a very different visitor experience. Solitude, awe-inspiring views, a slower pace, and the feeling of going back in time are some of the many attributes the North Rim has to offer. Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim of Grand Canyon is often the first prominent feature visitors see, even before viewing the canyon. The highway ends at the lodge. The lodge’s sloped roof, huge ponderosa beams, and massive limestone facade fit its 8,000-foot setting, but where is Grand Canyon? To experience the full impact of the design of the lodge, take the historic route. Go through the front entrance. Walk across the carpeted lobby and descend a stairwell. Shining through great windows across the sun room is the much-anticipated first view of Grand Canyon. AZ

publisher’spage PETRIFIED FOREST NATIONAL PARK The Grand Canyon State is home to some of the most visually stunning and unique geological landscapes on the planet. Included in this collection is the Petrified Forest National Park. Petrified Forest National Park is known for its fossils, especially of fallen trees that lived in the Late Triassic period of the Mesozoic era, about 225 million years ago. During this period, the region that is now the park was near the equator on the southwestern edge of the supercontinent Pangaea, and its climate was humid and sub-tropical. What later became northeastern Arizona was a low plain flanked by mountains to the south and southeast and a sea to the west. Streams flowing across the plain from the highlands deposited inorganic sediment and organic matter, including trees as well as other plants and animals that had entered or fallen into the water. Although most organic matter decays rapidly or is eaten by other organisms, some is buried so quickly that it remains intact and may become fossilized.
HERE COMES SANTA
During the Late Triassic, downed trees accumulating in river channels in what became the park were buried periodically by sediment containing volcanic ash. Groundwater dissolved silica (silicon dioxide) from the ash and carried it into the logs, where it formed quartz crystals that gradually replaced the organic matter. Traces of iron oxide and other substances combined with the silica to create varied colors in the petrified wood. In Petrified Forest National Park, most of the logs in the park retained their original external form during petrification but lost their internal structure. However, a small fraction of the logs and most of the park’s petrified animal bones have cells and other spaces that are mineral-filled but still retain much of their original organic structure. The park’s headquarters is about 26 miles east of Holbrook along Interstate 40 (I-40), which parallels the BNSF Railway’s Southern Transcon, the Puerco River, and historic U.S. Route 66, all crossing the park roughly east–west. The park is open every day except Christmas on a schedule that varies slightly with the seasons. www.nps.gov/pefo/ Words cannot do justice to the park. From the incredible fossilized trees to landscapes that literally look painted, this is another Arizona “must do” that the entire family can enjoy.

meteor crater: out of this world!
M
eteor Crater – the best preserved meteorite impact site on Earth is located in Northern Arizona, east of Flagstaff.
The Crater was created approximately 50,000 years ago when a meteor ended its 500 million year journey through space on a collision course with Earth. Traveling at approximately 26,000 miles per hour, it passed through the Earth’s atmosphere and, in a blinding flash, struck the Earth with an explosive force greater than twenty million tons of TNT. The meteor’s impact left a giant bowl-shaped crater nearly a mile across and more than 550 feet deep. The terrain of Meteor Crater so closely resembles that of the moon NASA made it an official training site for the Apollo astronauts.

aried and vibrant aptly describe the north central region. The famous Red Rocks of Sedona. The bar where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday drank whiskey. The mining town carved on a hillside. With four seasons and something for everyone, this region begs to be seen and will not soon be forgotten.
POPULAR DESTINATIONS INCLUDE: Sedona – Often called “Red Rock Country” Sedona is a four seasons playground for everyone – whether you’re into history and archaeology; arts and culture; power shopping; outdoor sports; or the spiritual and metaphysical, imagine doing all this in a backdrop of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Indeed, this picturesque city is surrounded by red-rock monoliths named Coffeepot, Cathedral and Thunder Mountain. At the north end of the city is the stunning Oak Creek Canyon, a breathtaking chasm that even today, is wildly wonderful. 800-288-7336 Prescott – Just 90 minutes north of Phoenix, “Everybody’s Hometown” is an ideal destination for golfers, outdoor adventure seekers, and western history buffs. From its majestic rock formations at Granite Dells to five area lakes to more than 450 miles of wellgroomed hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, Prescott knows no boundaries for exploring the area’s stunning natural beauty. The downtown Courthouse Plaza is Prescott’s historic heart. The plaza is bordered by the famous Whiskey Row, known to have hosted the likes of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday--and still hosts eclectic boutiques, galleries, antique shops, and restaurants. 800-266-7534 Jerome – After the mines closed in 1953 and “King Copper” left town, the population went from a peak of 15,000 in the 1920s to a low of 50 people. The Jerome Historical Society guarded the buildings against vandalism and the elements, the Douglas Mansion became a

State Park in 1965, and Jerome became a National Historic Landmark in 1976. During the 60’s and 70’s, Jerome offered a haven for artists. Soon newcomers and Jerome old timers were working together to bring Jerome back to life. Today, Jerome is very much alive with writers, artists, artisans, musicians, historians, and families. 928-634-2900 AZ

Why Are Sedona’s Rocks
Red?
The answer to one of the most asked questions by Sedona visitors is iron! The incredible array of colors displayed by Sedona’s famous Red Rocks is a direct result of iron oxide in water seeping into sandstone rock formations. Water carrying dissolved iron oxide drains through the porous sandstone and literally paints quartz grains – you guessed it – red! The Red Rocks vary in origin, color and age. Some were originally sea sediment while others came from blowing sand. You’ll see bright orange, red and tan rocks. The brightest orange rocks

are more than 250 million years old. White and grey rocks are limestone that formed at the bottom of the sea or sandstone that had its red color washed out by water. You may also stumble across basalt extruded by volcanoes in the past. Sedona and its famous Red Rocks have been in the making for hundreds of millions of years. There are many ways to enjoy the scenery, just be sure to get out and experience Sedona’s world renowned Red Rocks! And remember, take only memories,

Grand Canyon The
“The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond comparison--beyond description; absolutely unparalleled throughout the wide world .... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveliness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children’s children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.” — President Theodore Roosevelt ENJOYING THE SOUTH RIM Individual interests, available time, weather, and health considerations can influence your visit to the South Rim. Use the information available on the web site, www.nps.gov/grca/, to help plan your visit. Once you arrive in the park, read The Guide and talk with the rangers for up-to-the-minute information. Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently. Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a worryfree way to explore the developed areas of the rim. 70
The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway suitable for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon. Rangers present programs—walks, talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free. Check in The Guide for programs during your stay. VISITOR CENTERS The National Park Service staffs several visitor centers on the South Rim. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally. Grand Canyon Visitor Center Located near Mather Point The largest visitor center on the South Rim is a good stop for an introduction to Grand Canyon and for assistance in planning your visit.

corner Arizona Visitors Ask…? BY JOHNNY FENTON, M.A. CONCIERGE, OMNI TUCSON NATIONAL RESORT
Q. We’re traveling with children and looking for solutions to both boring drives, and a museum or two that entertains while sneaking in some knowledge. Where should we budget our time for this? A. Summertime is both a great time to dip in our pools, lakes, and rivers—then immerse yourself in a museum and the story it tells. Museums are an entertaining interpretation of history, of how to view the world and ourselves in it. On the way, a scenic drive that dispels the notion that Arizona is all cacti and rocks awaits you in Northern Arizona along the 43-mile White Mountain Scenic Byway between Pinetop and Eagar. Passing through the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest and the White Mountain Apache Reservation. The family takes in the nation’s largest Ponderosa pine forest climbing 9,000-plus feet and skirts 11,400 foot Mount Baldy where riotous displays of wildflowers splash along the roadside throughout the early summer. Stretch your legs and climb the Green Peak Forest Service fire-lookout tower for an incredible view. arizonaguide.com The border of Western Arizona famously carved by the Colorado River is more than just oars and shores. Enter the cells of the notorious prison that housed the Southwest’s most hardened criminals of the 19th century in the Yuma Territorial Prison Museum. The first seven inmates entered their cells on July 1, 1876 in a prison they built themselves. During its 33-year history 3,069 outlaws including 29 women lived within its walls. Surrounded by rivers, quick sand and desert, the prison had a reputation as “a hell hole” because of the insufferable summer heat and its standard punishment of a snake den and ball and chain confinement. Mexican revolutionaries, Wyatt Earp clan members, Mormon leaders and stagecoach robbers including the infamous Pearl Hart were among its inmates. Impossible to escape and impossible to endure, Tuberculosis was the number one killer here. Judged a great film location, many Westerns were shot here starring the likes of John Wayne, Gene Autry, Alan Ladd, Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe and Peter Fonda. The most iconic film to come out of this location is likely “3:10 to Yuma.” (928) 783-4771 www.yumaprison.org Steven Wright said it seemed like he “went to the museum where they had all the heads and arms from the statues that are in all the other museums!” Have I got a museum for Mr. Wright in Central Arizona. No arms, no heads, no statues just musical instruments at “The World’s Only Musical Instrument Museum”— the MIM ! In 100,000 square feet the MIM showcases nearly 15,000 instruments from every country in the world through high-tech interactive exhibits, films, concerts, special events and daily demonstrations on the mechanical organ.

Family weekend, June 13-14 features lots of live music, crafts and family drumming circles at no extra charge (480) 478-6000. www.MIM.org Step back in history during the Cold War and 100 feet down underground into the world’s only remaining missile site, home to the largest missile ever built in the United States the Titan II which stood alert along with 53 other such missiles in buried silos protecting this country. All others were deactivated by 1987 except the one in the Titan Missile Museum in Southern Arizona 20 minutes south of Tucson. Museum Director Yvonne Morris was a crew Commander on one of these missiles. You can explore the once Top Secret structure which is now a National Historic Landmark and experience a simulated launch from the control center! Tours begin daily at 9 a.m. and run hourly until 4 p.m. No reservations are required except for the use of an elevator accommodation for handicapped visitors (520) 625-7736. www.titanmissilemuseum.org Museums are places of amusement, relaxation, inspiration and authenticity. In a world of reproductions —you can view the real thing! And many museums are now recruiting teenagers to become volunteers, docents and research assistants. Arizona is home to more than 180 museums (the State includes parks and galleries in this list.) These three are a launching point from which you can start a conversation with your concierge to customize and enhance your Arizona adventure. AZ
