Volcano TIPS TO SEE THE
By Fern Gavelek
TIMING! Plan plenty of time to visit Hawai‘i Volcanoes
National Park. A World Heritage site, HVNP has much to see and do. It’s best to spend the night at Volcano House or nearby Volcano Village to best enjoy your road trip to and from the park; it’s located on the southeastern end of the island, Map G:K12.
SEE RED! Stay after dark to see red. At press time, a red
glow emanates from the ongoing gas eruption of Halema‘uma‘u Crater. Peer right into the action at the Jagger Museum Overlook. The billowing plume is the result of molten activity in the crater’s lava lake. The park is open 24-7 so check it out after dinner or before dawn, when it’s less crowded—you may hear lava bubbling below! Map F:B20.
INFO! Eruption activity can change so stop at Kilauea Visitor
Center; it’s staffed by rangers 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, 808-985-6000. Find a daily posting of free interpretive programs and catch a short film, “Born of Fire…Born of the Sea,” followed by a current eruption update, at the top of the hour. For an online eruption update, visit nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit/lava2.htm.
SCIENCE! Watch real-time scientific monitors in action inside Jagger Museum. Colorful, large murals by the late art historian Herb Kawainui Kane depict the Hawaiian pantheon, including Pelehonuamea, the deity of volcanoes. Open 10 a.m.8 p.m. daily with “Life on the Edge” ranger talks at 2, 3:30 and 5 p.m. HIKE! Go subterranean with a walk through Thurston Lava Tube. A picturesque trail rich with bird song and towering tree ferns descends to the 500-year-old Nahuku tunnel that’s illuminated by lights. Caves like this form by traveling magma. MORE! Other park attractions illustrating the awe of volcanism: Kilauea Iki Crater, Devastation Trail, Keanakakoi Crater, Pu‘u Loa Petroglyphs and Chain of Craters Road. www.nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit.

‘Genuine. Classic. Original’
Hawaiian Host
he pioneering spirit of Mamoru Takitani is the legacy behind Hawaiian Host. Takitani’s creation of a secret blend of chocolate enveloping a macadamia nut generated a taste sensation on Maui. After moving to O‘ahu, he purchased Ellen Dye Candies, and renamed it Hawaiian Host. That was just the beginning. Delicious After chocolate-covered Coconut Crunch macadamia nuts, came the MacNut Crunch®, macadamia nut chocolates complementing bits of crisp rice. Now, Hawaiian Host products include truffles, Caramacs®, ToffeeMacs®, AlohaMacs® and, of course, chocolate-covered mac nuts made with milk, dark or white chocolate. If you love to bake, Hawaiian Host has even created recipes for fudge, cookies, caramel sauce and brownies incorporating their yummy products. You can find the recipes on their website. “Hawai‘i’s Gift to the World” remains the leader in chocolatecovered macadamia products with more than 250 products being sold in more than 23 countries around the world. ig Isle jewelry is inspired by island plants, sea life and history. Precious Hawaiian black coral is the official state gemstone. State, federal and international laws protect the sustainable harvest of black coral in designated waters. Black coral grows in deep-sea colonies, taking 50 years or more to mature. The coral is related to sea anemones and grows in a Pearl Factory tree-like shape. While the living tissue of the coral is brilliantly colored, the gem takes its name from the coral’s black skeleton. Hawaiians call it ‘ekaha ku moana. The birthstone for June, pearls come in a variety of hues and shapes. Tahitian or black pearls are organic gems formed by the black lip oyster; they are French Polynesia’s largest export. South Sea pearls are produced using the large, 12-inch Pinctada maxima mollusk and is commercially harvested in Indonesia, Australia and the Philippines. Akoya pearls come from the akoya oyster, which is found and farmed primarily in Japan and Asia. Freshwater pearls are created using freshwater mussels farmed in the U.S. and Asia. Hawai‘i’s best on a plate
Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine (HRC) was born 22 years ago in 1991 when a group of 12 island chefs experimented with food concepts and developed what is now recognized worldwide as HRC. Eastern and western culinary traditions were combined to create unique Pacific-inspired dishes that incorporated locally grown and raised products from island farmers, plus the freshest seafood from the Pacific Ocean. The 12 original pioneers of Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine are chefs Sam Choy, Roger Dikon, Mark Ellman, Beverly Gannon, Jean-Marie Josselin, George Mavrothalassitis, Peter Merriman, Amy Ferguson Ota, Philippe Padovani, Gary Strehl, Alan Wong, and Roy Yamaguchi. Restaurants offering HRC include Huggo’s in Kailua-Kona, Bamboo Restaurant, plus Roy’s Waikoloa Bar & Grill and Merriman’s in Waimea.

Saving something sweet for a late-night bite doesn’t hurt either.

One of the best places to discover local flavor, in more ways than one, is at a farmers market. The Big Island has a number of places that hold farmers markets any day of the week. To find the one nearest you, check online at hawaiihomegrown. net for a list. Talk with local farmers and get to know the person behind the product. Mahalo for your support! Did you know? The wreckage of an 1800s Nantucket whaling ship, Two Brothers, was recently discovered on a reef off French Frigate Shoals in the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. Its captain was George Pollard Jr., whose previous whaling vessel was the Essex, the inspiration for Herman Melville’s famous book, “Moby Dick.”

THIS WEEK BIG ISLAND
Mofl0
™
2 w/ MO2 delivers fresh air on every breath.
Here’s how it works: as you know, trading CO2 (exhale) for O2 (inhale) occurs in billions of alveoli cells in the bronchial tubes & lungs, but not in the 4-6 inches from the trachea to the mouth hole—the stretch known as dead air space. A primitive snorkel triples dead air space, so you re-breathe the same air, which is like wearing the same sox or not changing your skivvies. Burning lungs with a heavy heart & head afflict the snorkeler breathing CO2. Do you really feel like sighing in an elevator? Now comes the FRESH-AIR SNORKEL: Mofl02™ with Jarvic IX-style, aortic valvulation & demarcation twixt in & out more tangible than that between church & state! With a double-valve twin chamber, the Mofl02™ clears easy with a double huff, for no headaches & more umph in your glug. Mofl02™ osmotic convection delivers 99% fresh air on every breath. So GET DOWN & come up to
MoflO O2™ for the day, the week or for keeps.
