Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum & Museum
Central What is it: An obligatory visit for history buffs. Dr. Nkrumah serves as a loose approximation of George Washington for Ghana and developed a PanAfrican consciousness. This museum is an introduction to this important figure. The museum is a great source of information, including photos of Nkrumah with a wide range of world leaders, his books, his clothing, and artifacts from various stages of his life. The Mausoleum is quite striking as are the fountains and statues in front of it. Highlight: Stroll through and enjoy the beautiful park and fountain! g h a n a k e y . c om
5
National Museum of Ghana
Central What is it: Established in 1957, by the Duchess of Kent, on the eve of Ghana’s Independence. This museum houses fascinating exhibits from the country’s prehistoric past to colonial antiquities to exhibits of contemporary African art. In the ethnography gallery find indigenous musical instruments, stools, pottery as well as Ashanti gold weights used to determine the value of goods. Highlight: Don’t miss the outdoor sculpture garden.

Independence Square
University of Ghana
Central
Legon
What is it: Independence Square is a parade ground with the capacity to accommodate 30,000 people. Independence Arch was erected in 1961 for the visit of Queen Elizabeth II, four years after Ghana was the first African country to achieve independence. The Black Star on top of Independence Arch is a symbol of African freedom. In fact, Independence Square was originally called Black Star Square. Highlight: Enjoy the welcome breeze, as you stroll through the massive open space.
What is it: Located about 12km from the center of Accra, it is the oldest and largest of the seven Ghanaian public universities. Originally, in 1948 an affiliate college of the University of London, it gained full university status in 1961, and now has nearly 30,000 students. Set in beautiful gardens, including a striking botanical garden. It has the biggest library in Ghana and is regarded as one of the best in West Africa. Open to visitors. Highlight: Browse the bookshop where you will find great local novels, and language books.
National Theatre of Ghana
Jamestown Lighthouse
Artists Alliance Gallery
Central
Jamestown
La
What is it: With a three tier entrance hall and a three tier auditorium that seats 1492 people, this elegant and imposing theatre, from a distance, looks like a gigantic ship or a seagull spreading its wings. It has three resident groups: the National Symphony Orchestra, the National Dance Company and the National Drama Company and is an important national center for the performing of arts. Highlight: Cathc one of their many shows like guitarist Thibault Cauvin on May 8 (see page 10)
What is it: Jamestown is a part of old Accra. Picturesque houses cluster together around a sea cliff with James fort on top. Narrow footpaths along the houses lead down to the sea and are lined with locals working with fishing nets while the children play. Fishing boats line the coastline. This is a great place to witness how ordinary people are in their everyday life. Highlight: Climb to the top of the Lighthouse for a great view of the colorful fishing harbour.
What is it: Situated on La beach road this is a gem of a gallery full to the brim with artistic expression. Three floors of art, sculpture, carvings and artifacts, definitely a haven for anyone looking to be inspired or simply enjoy some phenomenal work. It showcases traditional crafts, such as Ashanti drums and masks as well as contemporary Ghanaian art. Highlight: Admire the elaborately carved and painted coffins, fashioned into shapes like cars, crabs, Nike shoes...

May Puppet show: Quand j’étais petit, j’étais soldat Long ago, not so long ago, in a not-so-distant land, H. was a child soldier. He was only 13 years old and yet compelled by obligation and intimidation to take up arms and drugged against his will. For a long time he refused to talk about it, preferring silence and oblivion to the fear of being considered a criminal by his brothers. Now he is an adult and it’s all over. He has been rebuilding, over a long period of time, his family and friends that the war took away from him by making puppets of all those he has lost. Perhaps, he will have the courage to make them tell his story one day. Adapted and directed by Ivan Pommet. For viewers 8

Air conditioned clean buses to Kumasi. There are two levels of bus – one with larger seats and more leg room for marginally more money. Buses run frequently all day and night. A good alternative for a long drive. opposite Africa Motors OA Travel and Tours Tel: 0243-3177620 Tamale: 0242-767694 / 0208-083644 Kumasi: 03220-41925
Much like the STC and is located 200m from STC station in Accra. OA offers very new buses for a reasonable price, they also have multiple drivers for longer trips with an armed guard for security. The other main attraction of this bus system is the scheduled times it travels. Leaving g h a n a k e y . c om 3 1
