m a r tha’s address book Woodwork Find a wide variety of carved wood objects at the Arts Center on High street or at Wild Gecko in South Legon (p.26). If you have a little extra time, head north to Aburi Carving Center, 45 minutes north on the road to Aburi. Here craftsmen can be seen at work on magnificent carvings and drums which are available for purchase. If you are feeling creative, you can actually design your own piece. Beads The Artists Alliance collection of beads is impressive (p.27). If you are up for a road trip, head north to Koforidua, the capital of the Eastern Region, to see its bead market in the center of town, only open on Thursday mornings. There see an overwhelming variety of new and antique beads. If you are interested in seeing the bead making process, head to OdumaseKrobo, the owner of the Cedi Bead
Factory, who is a true artist, gives personal tours. Fugu smocks Find this traditional wear at the Arts Centre or go to the source in Northern Ghana. Daboya is the recognized capital of this art. Here the craft of the fugu, has retained its rich tradition. First the cotton thread is hand spun, dyed and dried. It is then woven by hand into strips. Each strip is then carefully sewn together, then it is finished with intricate embroidery patterns around the collar. leather goods An excellent place to see Ghana’s leather making process is at the Zongo Leather Factory which is a suburb of Tamale in the Northern region. Pretty much everyone in this suburb is involved in the process and they are eager to show you every part of it.
Favorite Finds
From top: Beaded wood carving from from the Arts Centre on High Street, a fugu from the Arts Centre, leather beaded sandles from the Arts Centre, a foldable table also found at the Arts Centre, antique necklace found at LaParadise Inn’s gift store, glass bead bracelets from Makola Market.

Kintampo Falls K i n tam p o Fa l l s
Flowing from the Pumpu River and falling 70 meters, this waterfall consist of three stages! The most impressive is the one at the base which can be reached by walking down 152 steps. Once you have arrived, enjoy climbing and sliding in, around, and behind the falls. Bring a picnic and sit in the shade of the Mahogany trees that can grow to be 40 meters in height. Kintampo Falls is also a convenient resting place when traveling between Kumasi and Tamale or Mole National Park. Nearby in the town of Kintampo is a small monument that marks the geographic center of Ghana.

This sanctuary is home to over 200 Geoffroy’s Pied Columbus monkeys (Ursine Colobus) and 500 Campbell’s Mona monkeys (Cercopithecus Campbelli) protected by friendly local villagers who for 150 years have considered these monkeys sacred. This is a great example of traditional based African conservation. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to see the monkeys. Expect the Mona monkeys to come down out of the trees to greet visitors, while the Colombus monkeys are a little shyer and will be harder to see. We recommend a guide (usually a European
volunteer) to get a little explanation and to point out the first few monkeys. Contrary to other reports we are told that is not acceptable feed the monkeys bananas, since feeding the monkeys destroys their ability to survive on their own and is not the right types of food for them. The sanctuary is nestled between two villages Boabeng and Fiema, which are also worth visiting. Tan o Sacred Grove
