In Accra’s sluggish traffic, a parade of people hawking doughnuts, power strips, Black Star jerseys and toilet paper weaves effortlessly between cars. These salespeople make up Ghana’s informal sector, and tell the larger story of the nation’s small business culture, a business spirit that allows many small businesses to survive against all odds. Ghana is home to gold, oil, cocoa—and outrageously high interest rates, 26 to 30 percent interest, compared to 6 percent in the U.S. “A lot of businesses do not use banks as a source of financing, but use what I call creative sources,” Dr. Daniel Quaye, coordinator of the Enterprise Development Service at the University of Ghana Business School, says. They share the desire to begin enterprises, but their success depends on numerous factors—and a lot of luck.

Importation is not the only option for small businesses. Elsewhere in Osu, waiters with icy, beehive-shaped mugs and yam fries elbow their way through the crowd at The Republic Bar & Grill’s second anniversary event which has attracted a crowd that overflows into the street. This event illustrates the success of Republic’s owners, brothers Raja and Kofi Owusu-Ansah, 38 and 40 respectively. Two years ago, this spot was an office space for their web development business, in order to optimize the use of their space they opened a

Wildlife Shai Hills Resource Reserve
The closest wildlife park to Accra. The vegetation of Shai Hills is dry, coastal evergreen savannah and 40% of the park is made up of hills covered with dry forest. Major wildlife to be seen include olive baboons, green monkeys, kobs and bushbucks, as well as monitor lizards, pythons and snakes. Bird lovers will also find many bird species including the Senegal Parrot, Grey
Plantain Eater, Hornbill, Red Northern Bishop and Violet Turaco and many more. Don’t miss a visit to one of the three caves, Adwuku, Sayu or Hiewey Mole National Park
Mole is about a 1 hour drive from Tamale. Tamale is about 600 km from Accra (a 13 hour bus ride, or a 1 hour 20 min plane ride) The largest of its kind in Ghana. Its savannah woodland and forested areas cover a staggering
space which measures just less than 5000 square kilometers. You can expect to see antelope, elephants, baboons, warthogs, buffalo, hyenas and if you’re very lucky, a leopard. Lions have recently been re-introduced to the park as well. There are also more than 250 species of birds to enjoy. The park has a simple motel with a pool and restaurant located directly above the elephants’ bathing pond. g h a n a k e y. c o m

Sekondi-Takoradi (Tadi)
Ten kilometers apart the twin cities of Sekondi and Takoradi, often referred to as Tadi, form the third largest conglomeration in Ghana. Situated half way between Accra and the Ivory Coast boarder, these twin cities are the regional capital and gateway to the west coast. Sakondi is home to the historical Fort Orange. Takoradi boasts a unique colorful circular market, a serene beachfront area, a monkey sanctuary and most recently three billion barrels of light oil.
Portuguese and the Dutch. Takoradi
Sekondi - Fort Orange
In the past, Sekondi prospered thanks to the railroad, which brought timber, cocoa and minerals from the interior to the coast. Today the colonial railroad and the Dutch fort are referred to as European Town. The station is a ghost of its former self and rows of railroad cars stand idle on the tracks. Fort Orange which was originally built as a trading post then
enlarged into a fort in 1690 and was sold with the rest of the Dutch Gold Coast to the United Kingdom in 1872, now serves as a lighthouse.

The largest of the twin cities, Takoradi, was chosen in 1920 to be the first deep water port in Ghana and continued to be the most important port of Ghana until the development of the port in Tema, near Accra. The discovery of oil off the coast of Takoradi in 2007, and the influx of visitors, most of them being business people, engineers and other oil workers, has given it new life and allowed it to once again regain its status as an economic hub. This has resulted in an emergence of new upscale hotels and restaurants along Takoradi’s beachfront. In contrast to its serene upscale beachfront, a couple of miles inland there is an overabundance of activity in a city center
