July is a busy month for Milwaukee! I want to welcome all our visitors, especially those attending the 134th Northwestern Mutual Annual Meeting of the Association of Network Representatives.
Can you hear the music? Summerfest remains the world’s largest music festival with over 800 performances filling the 11 stages for 11 days, This month, Milwaukee County is host to many cultural festivals, including Bastille Days, Festa Italiana and German Fest.
For something quieter, take a stroll in one of our beautiful parks or a bike ride along the Oak Leak Trail.
Whether you came to Milwaukee to enjoy the music or to attend a meeting, KEY Milwaukee is a great resource for you to find out everything that is going on in Milwaukee. Sincerely,
The festival season in Milwaukee is underway. It's a time to celebrate the variety of cultures, art, entertainment and cuisine that people from around the world have brought to Milwaukee.
A number of factors contribute to the success of festivals in Milwaukee. We have splendid locations at our lakefront and downtown to hold big events. We have visitors and locals who turn out every year. Perhaps most importantly, we have dedicated volunteers who make sure the traditions continue.
The cultural festivals in Milwaukee honor traditions and celebrate the arts. Unique dance and musical performances, history and great food are all shared with festival goers.
While many attendees have family connections to the celebrated cultures, the festivals embrace everyone. We celebrate our family roots and we invite everyone to join in! Sincerely,
Chris Abele, Milwaukee County Executive
Tom Barrett, Mayor

Key COVER FEATURE
Festa Italiana celebrates with music, food and fun FESTA ITALIANA 2014 brings a big taste of Italy to Henry W. Maier Festival Park on Milwaukee’s lakefront July 18-20 .
“It Feels Good to be Italian” is the theme of the celebration of Milwaukee’s Italian heritage, an annual showcase that brings top entertainers, chefs and more to the Summerfest grounds.
Exciting entertainment This year’s headliner comes direct from Europe. Patrizio Buanne, known for his engaging and spectacular performances, is an international multi-platinum singing sensation who has played for soldout theatres and arenas all over the world.
Called “the Italian pop crooner of our times,”Buanne has sold millions of records worldwide and has performed for “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” the Pope, Royal families and a U.S. President. It’s the first visit to Milwaukee for the entertainer, who performs Saturday and Sunday.
8
Other acts include award-winning Las Vegas comedian and actor Stephen Sorrentino, accordionist and singer Dick Contino, three-part female harmony group Tre Bella and Chicago singer and restaura-
teur Tony Spavone. Also entertaining Festa audiences are Franco Corso, Natalie Pinto, The Vince Chiarelli Band and Moreno Fruzzetti.
Festa favorite The Bronx Wanderers return for more rousing performances. Also sure to fire up audiences is the world’s #1 tribute band to Bruce Springsteen – Bruce in the USA. Guaranteed to delight Festagoers is the song, dance and comedy revue Matt Macis & Hannah Timm Live! In Concert. Other must-sees are the Russo Brothers, who give Italian classics a modern kick, and Bella Cain, known for its high-energy, Top 40 country sound.
Food favorites Always at the forefront of Festa is the food – arancini, toasted ravioli, calamari, eggplant sticks, sfincione, spiedini, sfingi, cannoli and more. Festa Italiana partners with local Italian restaurants to provide a variety of fresh dishes for festivalgoers to indulge in. New to the food lineup is Palermo’s Pizza. Glorioso’s Italian Market has been named the official Italian sausage provider of Festa 2014.
The popular Cucina Showcase returns to provide local chef and celebrity chef demonstrations daily.
“It F Good eels t Itali o be an”
Contests galore Also staged in the Cucina is the popular Cannoli Eating Contest on Saturday and Kids’ Pizza Making Contest on Sunday. New this year is the Chef’s Choice Recipe Contest on Sunday. Dishes will be judged by a panel of local chefs and celebrity “foodies” in front of a live Cucina Showcase audience. The winner receives the first Golden Spoon Award.
Cultural and heritage features Italian culture is a significant element of the festival. Mass is scheduled for Sunday, July 20, in the Marcus Amphitheater at 11 a.m. Presiding is the Very Reverend Timothy L. Kitzke, co-pastor of four parishes on Milwaukee's Eastside and chaplain of the Italian Community Center. In celebration of 25 years of priesthood, and 15 years on Milwaukee's Eastside, Father Kitzkel offers Holy Mass in thanksgiving for the gifts of faith and tradition. The Mass is followed by a procession of societies and patron saints, concluded with benediction on the festival grounds.
Other returning attractions include bocce ball, played daily with the annual tournament on Sunday; wine tastings; gondola rides; Italian Idol
Karaoke Contest; Pinocchio Parade and Copa Festa Italiana Futsal tournament. Not-to-be-missed are fabulous Bartolotta fireworks, presented every evening at 10:30 p.m.

FESTIVALS FILL Milwaukee all summer, but July is truly THE festival month.
SUMMERFEST, the world’s largest outdoor music festival, continues through July 6. See KEY Arts & Entertainment for Marcus Amphitheater headliners, and page 60 for more info.
BASTILLE DAYS, North America’s largest French-themed celebration, fills downtown Milwaukee’s Cathedral Square Park, July 10-13. The free, four-day street festival features live music on four stages, fun run, international marketplace, chef demos, wine and beer tastings, French and Cajun cuisine, roaming busker entertainment, Kids Day and a signature 43-foot Eiffel Tower replica. Hours are 11 a.m. to midnight Thursday-Saturday and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday.
Summerfest is followed on the lakefront by FESTA ITALIANA, July 18-20, the original lakefront ethnic festival and the largest Italian event of its kind in America (see KEY Cover Feature, pages 8-9).
GERMAN FEST brings its blend of music, food and Gemütlichkeit to Milwaukee’s beautiful Maier Festival Park (Summerfest grounds) July 25-27. Hours are 4 p.m.-midnight Friday, noonmidnight Saturday and noon-10 p.m. Sunday.
BRADY STREET FESTIVAL Brady Street Festival brings fun to the city’s near-east side Saturday, July 26, from 11 a.m.-midnight. The festival from Van Buren to Farwell Avenue features a variety of vendors selling pottery and jewelry as well as fare from Brady Street restaurants and cheese tasting from more than 40 Wisconsin cheesemakers.
Entertainment ranges from the Division BMX stunt team and Pro-Wrestling ring sponsored by Casablanca (KEY Milwaukee’s favorite Middle Eastern restaurant). Four stages of live music and interactive entertainment round out the fun.
38
The Brady Street neighborhood, once the home of Milwaukee’s Italian community and the center of the city’s 1960s counter-culture, now is known for trendy and locally owned boutiques and shops, eclectic selection of restaurants and lively nightlife.

Just south of Downtown, this vibrant former wholesale and manufacturing district is enjoying a sparkling renaissance, with shops, galleries and restaurants. Don’t miss the round of special events held here. BREW CITY BEER GEAR has set up a new shop at the Milwaukee Public Market, 400 N. Brewers show no sign of slowing down
HALFWAY THROUGH the major league baseball season, the Milwaukee Brewers are the surprise of the season, offensively and defensively showing they are again pennant contenders.
After the best start in franchise history, the Brewers slowed their pace slightly in May, but turned up the heat in June to remain atop the National League Central Division.
Centerfielder Carlos Gomez, catcher Jonathan Lucroy, third-baseman Aramis Ramirez and rightfielder Ryan Braun are leading the Brewers offense. Pitching has been far above expectations, with veterans and newcomers baffling hitters.
Regardless of the weather, the retractable roof of Miller Park ensures that all Brewers home games are played. Attendance at Brewers games is high throughout the season with many sold-out games. Tickets are available at MilwaukeeBrewers.com. Be sure to check TheTicketKing.com for choice seats or “sold-out” games.

KEY GOLF Whispering Springs deserves a shoutout
Golf club ranks right up there with Wisconsin’s best holes By JERRY SLASKE KEY Milwaukee Golf Editor IF YOU WANT a full-service golf club with excellent clubhouse, food, and banquet facilities…and, oh yes, a meticulously groomed course with bentgrass tee to green, and greens second to none (running at about 11 when I played them recently and truer than the Bible), but without the sticker shock, then Whispering Springs Golf Club in Fond du Lac is the place to go. Without a doubt, this is southeastern Wisconsin’s – if not all of Wisconsin’s – best-kept secret and value. (Note to anyone coming to the state for the 2015 PGA at Whistling Straits or the 2017 US Open at Erin Hills, plan on playing Whispering Springs while you’re here. It’s only about an hour from each of these courses, and about 65 minutes north of Milwaukee.)
With five sets of tees measuring between 5,200 and 7,000 yards, everyone can enjoy this course. But it’s certainly no pushover. A bit of brawn and brains go a long way here.
50
Whispering Springs’ front nine is somewhat of a links-style with water and sand on six and eight of the nine respectively. Greenside bunkers guard seven of the holes. Six of the holes on the back nine – the older of the nines – are wooded and lined with homes – none of which are obtrusive, except if you stray too far right on number 12, a downhill narrow par 4 (430 yards from the back tees). Water comes into play on two of the holes and all nine have greenside bunkers with fairway bunkers on six holes.
This is definitely a shotmaker’s paradise. Except on a couple holes, don’t expect to be able to roll the ball onto the green. You have to hit the green or pay the penalty of sand, water, and in several cases, a false front or caroms off steep banks. For the most part, the greens slope from back to front, but there is plenty of undulation in between. Every hole in the Whispering Springs bunch is solid, but numbers 9 and 18 standout from the rest. In fact, I wouldn’t be too bold in saying these are two of the best finishing holes you’ll find any-
where. You can shoot a terrible score overall, but if you play these two holes well, you come away feeling like you’re ready for the Tour. Number 9 is a long narrow par 4 (445 yards from the backs) with a relatively benign green, but one that is protected by water on the right and sand on the left. A lone stately hickory tree punctures the center of the fairway about 300 yards from the tee. Be long and favor the right center with your tee shot. This is one hole where you can roll the ball onto the green, assuming it’s right up the center.
At least by today’s standards, number 18 is a relatively short par 5 (529 yards from the backs). Nevertheless, it’s devilish. The fairway is tree-lined – almost chute-like off the tee – sloping right to left toward a creek and rising slightly to a dogleg about 125 yards from the green, which is fronted by water and bunkers. Long hitters can go for the shallow wide green in two. Good luck to them. The rest of us mortals should layup on top of the rise about 100-125 yards from the green. But be
careful because there’s a large bunker up there at just about that distance. I know because I found it with what I thought was a perfect second shot.
Several other favorites include number 2, the longest hole on the course at 576 yards from the back tees that has trees, sand, and water everywhere; number 14, a short par 4 (350 yards from the backs) that requires pinpoint accuracy; number 17, a par 4 (407 yards from the backs) through a chute of trees that demands exacting distance off the tee to the dogleg right so that you have a clear shot to a raised green. As I write this, the peak summer rates are $32 walking and $49 riding; it’s even less if you’re a senior (60+) or 20 years of age or under. How do they do it? I don’t care. All I want to do is play golf at a great course without breaking the budget. And Whispering Springs is it.

Key RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH
Carini’s La Conca D’Oro
AUTHENTIC CUISINE has made Carini’s La Conca D’Oro a favorite, earning rave reviews for the family-owned business from locals and visitors alike.
Those attending Festa Italiana, July 18-20, can stop by Carini’s booth for a taste of the restaurant’s regular cuisine as well as special items devised for the festival. (Meatballs-on-a-stick, anyone?) And with the FIFA World Cup continuing through July 13, Carini’s offers food and drink specials at its east side location, as well as big screen coverage of all the action every day of the week.
Celebrating 17 years in business, the restaurant at 3468 N. Oakland Ave. is conveniently located on Milwaukee’s east side, close to downtown and within walking distance of UW–Milwaukee.
Carini’s has it all – authentic cuisine, friendly service and diverse dining room options. Banquet facilities are available to serve up to 75, and Carini’s is open seven days a week. The front dining areas double as an indoor-outdoor patio. Floor to ceiling windows, ceiling fans, handpainted murals and custom ceramic tile create a seaside atmosphere. You’ll feel like you are dining at a sidewalk cafe in Sicily – but at the same time “weather proof.”
Beyond those rooms, there’s a comfortable bar area. The bar is a great place to relax, savor a drink or glass of wine, chat with friends or scan the menu. The dining room adjacent to the front of the restaurant has a special occasion feel. Here, the faux-painted walls capture the essence of aged terra cotta and brick, a decor that brings to mind a centuries-old villa. In the back dining room, antique fixtures, trea-
58
sured family photos and faux-painted walls create a warm yet elegant setting.
Carini’s interior makes the perfect backdrop for the best part of any visit to Carini’s – the cuisine created by Chef-owner Peter Carini. Carini came to the U.S. in 1966 from Porticello, a small fishing village near Palermo. There, he learned from his mother that good Italian food is prepared by taste, touch and instinct.
Peter also brought to America a great knowledge of seafood. Dishes are individually prepared using the freshest foods and the finest ingredients. The chef insists on a “scratch kitchen,” with no commercially made mixes or shortcuts.
The restaurant’s name means “Shell of Gold.” There are 11 appetizers to choose from, and pasta dishes include the classics and originals created by Peter. Choose dishes prepared with calamari, clams, shrimp, scallops, mussels, swordfish, cod or salmon. Carini’s caters to beef-lovers as well, and those who have a taste for chicken or veal. And, vegetarians have their own menu section. A kids menu is available for ages 10 and under.
Dinner is served Monday-Sunday, with Monday service subject to change after Sept. 30. Visit Carini’s for lunch, served Tuesday through Friday, and you can select from the lunch menu or treat yourself to one of the best buffets in Milwaukee. This is a special favorite of vegetarians, since the eggplant spidieni is a buffet staple. On Fridays, Carini’s offers a special lunch-time Fish Fry Buffet and fish specials at dinner. For the perfect Milwaukee souvenir, the restaurant sells its sauces, seasoned salt and flavored oil. Take a taste of Carini’s home with you!
