dining & Lu‘au • Dinner Cruises

Island chefs are adept at creating local versions of American standards. One bite, and you’ll surely want more. The menu at Keoki’s Paradise is all about fresh island-style entrees. Don’t miss the Miso Scallops & Bacon, an appetizer with Kiawe house-smoked bacon, kukui nut relish and sweet soy sauce. The Chef’s Fresh Fish Duo is a combo of two fresh isle fish, misoyaki seared and herb grilled, citrus vinaigrette, Thai coconut jasmine rice and local veggies. Happy Hour 3-5 p.m. and entertainment nightly. For more local flair, try the Kiawe Smoked Pork Traditional at Kalapaki Joe’s. It’s pork marinated and smoked with Hawaiian kiawe hardwood for a purely island flavor. Enjoy it with a Mango Beer! One of the most popular dishes at MCS Grill is the MCS Combo—Hawaiian Chili Peppa Fried Chicken and Fried Saimin!

Dining with a View A view of white sand beaches or the vast Pacific while enjoying a meal isn’t too much to ask for since you’re in paradise. Brennecke’s is just steps away from beautiful Po‘ipu Beach Park, perfect for catching views of shimmering seas and spectacular sunsets. Enjoy a tempting menu featuring fresh isle fish specials such as the Charbroiled Ono with Wasabi Shrimp or Miso Sake Marinated Mahi Mahi. merriman’s fish house

ne of the original 12 Hawai‘i chefs who developed and refined Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine in 1991, Peter Merriman executes the farm-to-table philosophy daily. It’s a cooking style that embraces locally grown ingredients and flavors, as well as island raised meat and seafood varieties. Fans say that Chef Merriman invented the wok charred ahi, his signature entree. Merriman says, “I correct them and say we discovered it.” “Japanese cuisine uses tataki, a method of quickly searing fish. We loved the idea of highlighting the super high quality ahi we have in Hawai‘i, but going one step further to add the charred and taste profiles.” continued on page 32

Kaua‘i’s farmers markets

hopping for fresh fruits and produce at a farmers market creates a win-win situation for all involved. As a consumer, you’re able to enjoy the freshest island-grown and raised products making for improved nutrition and diet. Talk to a local farmer and get tips and inspiration on how to prepare, cook and/or eat an unusual item (ie. breadfruit). By talking to the folks who grow and raise their products, you’ll be all the more wiser on the origin of the item. Also, if you’d like to see more organic items offered, mention it or ask where you can find it. Best of all, farmers markets help stimulate the local economy and keep the money within the local community. Thank you for your support!

he pioneering spirit of Mamoru Takitani is the legacy behind Hawaiian Host. Takitani’s creation of a secret blend of chocolate enveloping a macadamia nut generated a taste sensation on Maui. After moving to O‘ahu, he purchased Ellen Dye Candies, and renamed it Hawaiian Host. That was just the beginning. After chocolate-covered macadamia nuts, came the MacNut Crunch®, macadamia nut chocolates complementing bits of crisp rice. Now, Hawaiian Host products include truffles, Caramacs®, ToffeeMacs®, AlohaMacs® and, of course, chocolate-covered mac nuts made with milk, dark or white chocolate. If you love to bake, Hawaiian Host has even created recipes for fudge, cookies, caramel sauce and brownies incorporating their yummy products. You can find the recipes on their website. “Hawai‘i’s Gift to the World” remains the leader in chocolatecovered macadamia products with more than 250 products being sold in more than 23 countries around the world. Rich in Island History, Culture

Did you know that Kaua‘i is the only island in the Hawaiian Island chain that was not conquered by King Kamehameha I? Kaua‘i’s benevolent King Kaumuali‘i ceded his kingdom to Kamehameha in order to avoid the slaughter of his people in battle. Kauai Museum shares the rich stories and treasured cultural artifacts with visitors on guided tours at 10:30 a.m. Monday-Friday. Or take a self-guided tour on your own. Lots to see and more to Discover the dramatic scenery of Kaua‘i. Soar over mountains, stroll lush gardens, cruise across the glistening Pacific—you’ll wish you had more time!

The Garden Isle

Kaua‘i is geologically the oldest island in the Hawaiian Island chain. It may look small on the map, but there is lots to do and see within its 562 square miles. As the eldest, it’s had the longest exposure to the natural elements of wind and rain. You’ll see evidence of this while standing on the rim of the grand Waimea Canyon (page 56). Catch a boat or take to the air to see the spectacular Napali Coast—you WILL be awestruck (page 58)!

Island Airwaves

One of the ways to get to know the local culture is by listening to local radio stations. Tune into contemporary or traditional Hawaiian music or listen to quick news bites. Hear the latest country music with hourly AP news updates on 99.9FM; Hawaiian music on 98.9FM; and contemporary sounds on 98.1FM JAMZ.

nce you see the Napali Coast, it will forever remain in your memory as one of the most beautiful spots on Earth. The serrated-edged cliffs reach for the sky and abruptly fall into the ocean. Beautiful waterfalls and swift flowing streams continue to carve out these rugged valleys and shape the shorelines. The ancient Hawaiian people favored these shores because of their easy access to typically “hard-to-catch” ocean delicacies. Extensive stone foundations and walls remain on the valley floors, remnants of once thriving Hawaiian settlements. Ke‘e Beach is the furthest point for all vehicles. To the east is Ha‘ena Beach Park with sheltered picnic tables. To the west of Ke‘e Beach is the widely known Kalalau Trail, one of the world’s premier hikes. The first two miles of the trail open to all is a popular day hike. It stretches from Ha‘ena State Park to Hanakapi‘ai Beach, offering people just a sample of what lies beyond. Be aware that crossing Hanakapi‘ai Stream is dangerous when it becomes swollen due to recent rain; do not attempt to cross it at such a time. The 11-mile Kalalau Trail provides the only land access into this part of the island. Traversing five valleys and skirting imposing cliffs with incredible views, it ends at Kalalau Beach. An earlier foot trail created by the ancient Hawaiian people who lived in this area linked their settlements along the coastline. The current Kalalau Trail, built in the late 1800s, loosely follows this path. To tackle this advanced hike, a permit is mandatory, as well as sufficient food, water and shelter. Map G.

T

his famous 160-acre coastal refuge sits 200 feet above the ocean on a striking peninsula at Kaua‘i’s northernmost point (Map C:E21). Kilauea Lighthouse and bird sanctuary is one of the most visited in the United States. Although the lighthouse isn’t open to the public, the grounds are, and a self-guided path to the point offers interpretive information. The Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary also has a presence with large interpretive signs about Hawai‘i’s marine mammals and sea turtles. Although a fully automated electronic beacon has replaced the Fresnel lens (once the largest glass

lens of its kind), the 1913 lighthouse still stands intact. Aviation history credits the Kilauea Lighthouse with preventing a tragedy on the first trans-Pacific flight in 1927 by reorienting the two pilots of the Bird of Paradise. The lighthouse was retired from service in 1970, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. In 1985, Kilauea Point and its lighthouse became part of the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, and is closed on major federal holidays. To get there, turn off Highway 53 near mile marker 23, then take Kolo Road to Kilauea Road. Admission: Adults $5; kids 16 and under free. 808-828-1413,

efore the arrival of Captain Cook in the late 1700s, Hanapepe Valley on Kaua‘i’s west side was home to many early Hawaiians. They grew taro and cultivated salt production in saltwater ponds. Some time around the 1880s, the sugar industry began flourishing in the area. Chinese, Japanese and Filipino immigrants made their home here. Others began small farms to supply the ‘Kaua‘i’s Biggest Little Town’ growing community. At the turn of the 19th century, Hanapepe’s population was comprised of predominantly enterprising Asian immigrants. It became a bustling center of commerce during the pre-World War II era and was named “Kaua‘i’s Biggest Little Town” by the Hanapepe Merchants Association. The historic buildings and quaint character of the town have also lured many filmmakers. They include the 1983 TV miniseries, “The Thorn Birds,” and Disney’s animated tale, “Lilo and Stitch.” Today, the historic storefronts house numerous fine art galleries, many run by artists with their studios in back. Stop by on a Friday night for Art Night, beckoning visitors with art, music, food and fun; it’s 6-9 p.m. Pick up a copy of the Historic Hanapepe Walking Tour map for a self-guided exploration of the significant structures and locations in town, many with a colorful past.

WAILUA RIVER

he river’s journey begins on the slopes of Mt. Wai‘ale‘ale, a dormant crater that stands as a testament to the fiery beginnings of Kaua‘i’s eden-like beauty. At 5,243 feet, Wai‘ale‘ale (Hawaiian for “rippling waters”) is considered one of the rainiest spots on earth. Its height, conical shape and position in the island chain create the trifecta of weather conditions for abundant rainfall. From the summit, the river travels nearly 10 miles down the southeast face emptying out its liquid cargo in two popular and easily accessible waterfalls: the 80-foot Wailua Falls and Opaeka‘a Falls (Map G:N10). “Opaeka‘a” means “rolling shrimp,” many of which were once plentiful in the stream. But the journey doesn’t end there.

The winding flow of water makes its way along 11 miles of thick, verdant foliage. Its lushness is attributed to the river’s tendency to overflow its banks depositing nutrient-rich sediments along the river’s edge. Rich soil, coupled with the ancient Hawaiian’s acumen for horticulture, made the region a natural breadbasket. Tributaries carry the river inland allowing for the construction of fishponds. And while shallow waters restrict travel by larger boats, kayaks are an excellent way to explore off-river areas. A stunning sight to behold—Napali Coast

Situated on the north shore of Kaua‘i, the cliffs of the Napali Coast stand among the sheerest in the world. One of your best vacation adventures will be exploring this remote coast by sea. Take a boat ride or rafting excursion along this amazing coast and see dolphins, flying fish, turtles and other marine life, in addition to the exquisite hue of turquoise waters due to the sandy ocean floor. Friendly crews are ready to fill you in on the area’s history, plus point out sea caves and ancient Hawaiian sites. If ocean conditions are right, some vessels are able to navigate their way into the caves for added enjoyment. Owner Liko Ho‘okano invites you to experience the ultimate ocean adventure with Liko Kauai Cruises. Born and raised on Kaua‘i, and of native Hawaiian ancestry, Capt. Ho‘okano shares his passion for the ocean while adding some local flavor to every outing. Board the 49-foot Napali Kai III catamaran and

enjoy unobstructed views, a shaded area, freshwater shower and spacious restroom. Morning and afternoon tours are available. The husband and wife team of Captain Lani Swain and his wife Debbie has been the cornerstone of Catamaran Kahanu since 1985. As a guest, you’ll get to share in their love of the island, its people and learn about the Hawaiian culture. Also enjoy the ride aboard the specially designed catamaran that allows passengers to get up close to the amazing sea caves and waterfalls along the Napali Coastline. Daily tours offer swimming, snorkeling and a sunset dinner cruise. Take to the ocean aboard the 60-foot Lucky Lady with Kauai Sea Tours. If you’re looking for a leisurely sail complete with spacious decks, shaded seating, restrooms, freshwater showers and swim platform, then select a snorkel, sunset dinner or combo tour aboard the Lucky Lady. On the other hand, an ocean raft tour serves up an exciting day on the water with a beach landing at Nualolo Kai (April-October) and exploring sea caves pending ocean conditions. Sail on a catamaran specially designed to navigate the coastal waters with the folks at Blue Dolphin Charters. On the other hand, if you’re up for more of an adventure, they also offer raft tours. Learn about Hawaiian legends and see the coastal landmarks as you “talk story” with the captain and crew. Morning or afternoon tours are available serving up either a continental breakfast or deli lunch; ask about snorkeling and scuba diving. Sunset cruises offer a dinner option.

MAKUA (TUNNELS) BEACH

The beautiful beaches and sparkling ocean that surround Kaua‘i are wonderful vacation playgrounds. But before heading out to play, talk to your concierge or an activity provider about specific beach features, its surrounding waters and potential, invisible rip currents. For your safety, community volunteers have installed Rescue Tubes, 10 foot high tubes with personal flotation devices used to stabilize a distressed swimmer. If you see one at the beach, be sure to read about their usage. THIS WEEK KAUAI

I mean you, Bubba, & Li’l Bubba too–– Does your snorkel flop? Does water splash in and douse your breather? Does your swivel leak or crunch sand? Is that your kid whining over snuks & womb implosion trauma? Well, look at this: The Bubba snorkels (pat pending) drain splash water, block backwash and clear easy as ptuey! Salt-watered sinuses burn. The Ultima Bubba™, for 100-pounders or better, breathes free, clears easy and stays dry. Kids gag on adult snorkels or junk kid snorkels with collapsible mouthpieces. The Li’l Bubba™ is the first dry snorkel in small format EVER. With a short stroke and narrow bore in proportion to smaller lungs, the Li’l Bubba™ lets your junior barracuda breathe easy, happy as a meadowlark in springtime. The Bubba snorkels are simply the best dry snorkels on the market today. No snuks, leaks, or pond scum in the gear wash.

FREE BUBBA (Li’l or Ultima) for use with gear for the week!
