The Queen City
by Michele Roth
C
incinnati, also known as the Queen City, is a city rich in history and culture with exceptional visual and creative arts, professional sports teams and top notch museums. Whether you are a resident or a visitor there is always something to learn, see and do in Cincinnati and our neighboring cities of Covington and Newport. For those reasons and many more, it’s no surprise that in 2012 Lonely Planet Travel Guide named Cincinnati number three of the top ten travel destinations in the United States. Cincinnati offers all the benefits of larger cities like Chicago and New York while maintaining the small hometown hospitality. In this section we like to bring interesting facts and opinions. This is what we have for you in this month’s issue:
And the countdown begins to one of the most celebrated days in Cincinnati, OPENING DAY! There’s lots of baseball history in our great city and we thought we would share some interesting facts about our home team.
Cincinnati Redlegs
During the McCarthy era the Reds officially changed their name to the Cincinnati Redlegs because they feared the shortened name would associate them with Communism. In 1956 they even removed the term “Reds” from the inside of the C of the logo for this reason although it returned and the traditional logo was restored in 1967.
Opening Day
Opening day for the Reds is always scheduled to be played at home.

It has been this way since they joined the National League in 1876.The Reds are scheduled to open every season at home, they are the only team to be granted this privilege.
Perfect Season
The Cincinnati Red Stockings are the only team in baseball history to achieve a perfect season with a record of 65-0 in 1869. This team was also the first team to play on both the East and West coast in the same season.

The 1869 team was composed of ten players, the first nine and a substitute. They also returned for the 1870 season. uy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks because Cincinnati Reds baseball is back! The winners of five World Series titles, one American Association pennant, nine National League pennants and ten division titles; start the 2013 season April 1st. In Cincinnati it’s not just the start of the baseball season but a holiday celebrated with electricity and unity across the entire Tristate area. On opening day you will see a river of red as people make their way to Great American Ball Park. You will see people at area restaurants and bars watching the game and live bands playing to kick off the season. People not able to get off work will still wear red and the game can be heard in offices, cars and even walking down the street. The nostalgia, history and hope are felt more on this day in Cincinnati than any movie about America’s favorite pastime can reflect. The history of professional baseball and our beloved Cincinnati Reds started in 1869 KEY CINCINNATI MARCH 2013

when the Cincinnati Red Stockings became the first openly professional ball team where ten players were salaried. The team acquired the nickname because of the main feature to their uniforms which were long red stockings which were exaggerated when worn with the short white trousers. Those red stockings and white trousers were first donned at Union Grounds which is where the first professional team played from 1869 until 1870. The park could seat up to 4,000 spectators and was located where Union Terminal train station is today. From 1876 to 1879 they played at Avenue Grounds which held 3,000 fans and from there they went to League Park which had a covered grandstand and uncovered seats along the first and third bases. After a major fire at League Park
renovations were made including a new grandstand, field level seats and also box seats. After the renovations League Park was then called Palace of the Fans and the facility was used from 1902 through 1911. In 1912 the Reds moved to Redland Field which would later be named Crosley Field and where MLB history was made when the first night game was played. Located at the corner of Western Avenue and Top: Marge Schott Findlay Street Right: Reds players at Riverfront Crosley Field Coliseum. was also the host to the first World Series Championship team. In June of 1970 Riverfront Stadium was completed and the Cincinnati Reds left Crosley Field for the new stadium which could seat more than 52,000 fans and would become the home of the Big Red Machine. In 1996 River-
front Stadium was renamed Cinergy Field although the Reds would move once again in 2003 to their current home Great American Ball Park which pays tribute to the Reds rich history and seats 42,036 fans. On April 1st 2013 at Great American Ball Park the fans will once again be buying peanuts and Cracker Jacks and rooting for our home team. Everyone at Key Magazine would like to wish all the fans a happy Opening Day and to all the Reds Players and members of this great organization a winning season. Go Reds!

Favorite Reds Moments I was born on October 20th, 1940; the year the Reds beat the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. Fifty years later my family had a surprise birthday party for me and once again the Reds were in the World Series against the Oakland A’s. It was game four and if the Reds won they would take the series. Surrounded by loved ones, we watched the Reds give me the best 50th birthday present by winning with the Sweep! Dwight R., Cincinnati
Two years ago my brother and I went to see the Reds play against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The weather was terrible so it took real dedication to stay the entire game. To make matters worse we were sitting in front of the most obnoxious Pirates fans. The game went on and the Reds just weren’t on that night. The goading got worse as the Pirates fans continued drinking. The ninth inning came up and Chapman was inserted into the game. The Pirates fans stopped the goading and started heckling Chapman. Chapman winds, delivers and pitches, 101 on the radar 103, 103... 107!!! The boys from Pittsburgh never uttered another word and although the Reds lost, they won in our eyes as Chapman shut ‘em up! Rodney F., Cincinnati On my birthday my husband and I went to the Reds game to celebrate and one of my best friends gave birth to her first child. The Reds were getting brutally beaten by the Indians. Then it happened! Point by point the Reds were catching up. With bases loaded, Adam Dunn stepped up to the plate and hit a walk off, grand slam to win the game! My birthday wish had come true and I had the prized scorecard in hand. We rushed to the hospital and gave baby Anderson Douglas Cooper the winning scorecard thanks to Adam Dunn! Nearly seven years later, he still has that scorecard, and a fully decorated Reds room. We are sure he will be a reds fan for life! Melissa C., Cincinnati

A Local Treasure and Tradition
By: Sue Cunningham
blocks north from downtown Cincinnati in Over-theJtiansust Rhine is Findlay Market, a treasured jewel of Cincinnasince 1852. Attracting diverse crowds of locals and visitors, it is the state of Ohio’s oldest public market and it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places June 5th, 1972. Findlay Market is open Tuesday through Sunday year round with over three dozen indoor merchants selling meat, fish, poultry, produce, flowers, cheese, deli, ethnic foods and other various products. From April through

November on Saturdays and Sundays, there are dozens of outdoor vendors and numerous street performers and artists. There are also several special events at this iconic establishment. One of the most honored traditions the city of Cincinnati has is coordinated by the market, the Findlay Market Opening Day Parade. Since 1920, the merchants of Findlay Market have organized the Opening Day Parade and continually bring fans together, not only to celebrate Cincinnati Reds baseball, but to celebrate community. This time-honored tradition will be celebrated on Monday, April 1st and the Findlay Market Association is working hard to make this year’s festivities more time efficient. “The parade has grown significantly and we have to limit the participants from 240 units to 200 to keep the parade under two hours”, says Neil Luken the Parade Committee Chair. But don’t worry, the crowd favorites will still be there including the Budweiser Clydesdale horses. The parade route starts at the Race Street entrance of Findlay Market and heads south down to Fifth Street, then East on Fifth Street and on to Broadway. Former Grand Marshals leading the way along the parade path have been Aaron Boone, Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, Frank Robinson, Cesar Geronimo, Eric Davis and Mario Soto, just to name a few. Visit Findlay Market for a nostalgic experience and the freshest and most unique products around. While shopping at the Findlay Market, don’t forget to thank the vendors for continuing Cincinnati’s Opening Day tradition. KEY CINCINNATI MARCH 2013

he Reds Hall of Fame & Museum is the place to go if you are a baseball fan, and especially if you are a Cincinnati Reds fan. The museum is a first class 16,000 square foot facility filled with memorials to baseball and the Cincinnati Reds with educational exhibits and special events. Located on the west side of Great American Ball Park at 100 Joe Nuxhall Way, it is a great stop before or after the game or as a destination all its own. The Reds Hall of Fame was established in 1958 and is the oldest team Hall of Fame. The bronze plaques were not previously ex26

hibited because there was no facility to display them, but they continued to make them every year. Usually, they were in storage except on occasion when they were displayed to the public at Redsfest and certain home game weekends. Since 2004, the inductee plaques have been on display at their new home for all to admire. While at the Reds Hall of Fame & Museum make sure to stop by the gift shops to pick up something for yourself or for your favorite Reds fan. The shops include the Autographs Shop, Johnny Bench Shop, Collectibles Shop and the Book Shop where you will find everything from shirts
and hats to autographed baseballs from many of the Hall of Famers to special collectibles. If you would like to be a part of the legacy, now is your chance with the Legacy Brick Campaign to support the Museum’s statue project. There will be a limited number of bricks available for purchase to be placed around the Reds Hall of Fame & Museum entrance, the Johnny Bench statue and the upcoming Joe Morgan statue to be dedicated in September of this year. The Reds Hall of Fame & Museum is not only an educational experience but a sentimental journey of history and memories of Cincinnati Reds baseball. KEY CINCINNATI MARCH 2013

The appetizers are referred to as the “Starting Lineup” and include all the favorites like Buffalo Chicken Dip, Grand Slam Nachos and Ball Park Pretzels. They also have great burgers and, if you want to keep with the ball park theme, how about one of their 100% all beef dogs? Your hunger can also be satisfied with one of their “Reds Hot Sandwiches” or one of their many delicious entrees. Willie’s Sports Cafe is a great place to meet to watch the game, and if you are planning on going to the game you can catch the Willie’s Shuttle bus with several drop-off and pick-up times before and after the game. Let’s not forget March Madness! Come to Willie’s to watch all the games. Monday thru Friday from 1-7 PM enjoy great happy hour prices on domestic bottles and draft pints, and all appetizers are only $5 and wings are $2 off. Great prices, great atmosphere and strategically placed televisions makes Willie’s the place to be for March Madness and all of the games! One more thing, KIDS NIGHT! Buy an adult meal on Tuesday night and up to two kids under 10 eat free from the kids menu. Kids are welcome anytime in the dining area that is separate from the bar area.
