From Lanterns to Electric Light: Davies Manor It looks old, doesn't it? Well, it is. Probably the oldest house in Shelby County, it dates back to when Davy Crockett was in town trying to float barrel staves downriver to New Orleans. What we know for sure is that the original 1-room log cabin of what is now Davies Manor Plantation was already here for Joel Royster to add on to in the early 1830s: a dogtrot, a loft above the "parlor", and a 2-story bedroom area. The Davies family acquired the cabin in 1851 and in the 1860s added the dining room and, after 1950, the kitchen. Its log and chink construction and exposed log interior evokes the hardy pioneer lifestyle; period furnishings offer vignettes of life throughout the 19th century. Davies Manor House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and has been recognized for its historic value with numerous awards and certificates, including a Century Farm Certificate for being owned and operated by the same family for over one hundred years. It has also been certified an official Backyard Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife
Federation for "providing the four basic habitat elements needed for wildlife to thrive: food, water, cover, and places to raise young." Davies Manor Plantation is at 9336 Davies Plantation Rd. (Memphis, TN 38133), at exit 20 on I-40. Go north one block on Canada Rd. and turn left on Davies Plantation Rd., Davies Manor Plantation is past the 4-way stop. The house is open for tours Tues.-Sat. noon-3:30 p.m., Apr. 1-Dec. 15. Call 901-386-0715 or visit www.daviesmanorplantation.org.

MATA Trolleys Return To
The Garage For Safety Updates! Lime-Green Hybrid Buses Roll In To Keep The Routes Running!
Service on all trolley rail lines has been temporarily suspended for renovations. But don't worry. Alternate service for the trolley lines is being provided through shuttles on MATA's new green hybrid electric buses. Trolley fares and hours of service remain the same - trolley passes will be accepted on bus shuttles. So you'll still be able to get from the Pinch District and the Memphis Cook Convention Center, run past Civic Center Plaza and Court Square, and go all the way to Peabody Place and Beale Street, the FedEx Forum, Nationals Civil Rights Museum and the South Main Historic Arts District. And you'll still be able to travel the Riverfront Loop, and take in the Tennessee Welcome Center, Mud Island and the Mississippi River Museum and the panoramic beauty of the 5-block long River Walk. As with the trolleys, the lime-green buses will be pulling into the station about every 10 to 15 minutes. On the Madison Avenue Line, frequency slows to about every 25 minutes after 6 p.m. and on Sundays. Check the map on the back of the magazine for station locations, schedules and fares. Or call 901-274-MATA (6282) or visit matatransit.com. July 16-31, 1-15, 2014 • KEY 11
