Combining Memphis' rich past with its promising future, the Main Street Trolley's vintage trolley cars roll up and down Main Street, from one downtown landmark to another. Authentically restored to original elegance, down to the solid brass seat and window accents and antique lighting fixtures, these rail cars follow the path of their mule-drawn predecessors, running from Auction Ave. to Calhoun St. They also service the 2.5 mile Riverfront Loop and the Medical Center, via the Madison Avenue Trolley Line. There is no better vehicle for downtown sightseeing. The trolley runs from the Pinch District and the Memphis Cook Convention Center, past Civic Center Plaza and Court Square, all the way to Peabody Place and Beale Street, the FedEx Forum, Nationals Civil Rights Museum and the South Main Historic Arts District. Traveling the Riverfront Loop, visitors can take in the Tennessee Welcome Center, Mud Island and the Mississippi River Museum and the panoramic beauty of the 5-block long River Walk. Each of the 24 trolley stations throughout downtown, the riverfront and Madison Ave., are equipped for those with disabilities and unable to use steps. The trolley runs daily on every line, with a car pulling into the station about every 10 to 15 minutes. On the Madison Avenue Line, frequency slows to about every 25 minutes after 6 p.m. and on Sundays. Check the map on the back of the magazine for station locations, schedules and fares. Or call 901-274-MATA (6282) or visit matatransit. com.
