On the Cover: Holiday Folk Fair International has the 2014 theme “Celebrate the Culture of the Artisan” and will recognize master artisans such as Sidonka Wadina, pictured on the cover. Wadina learned Slovakian culture and art from her grandmother and is internationally recognized for her straw weaving and egg decorating. A Folk Fair participant since the age of two, Wadina posed for the cover on Milwaukee’s River Walk, steps from the office of the International Institute of Wisconsin, which presents Folk Fair. Spend time together— not a fortune.

You’ll find it easy here— visitmilwaukee.org

As the temperature turns chilly and the last leaves fall, it's time to welcome winter. While Milwaukee winters may be cold and snowy, don't let those small obstacles keep you from enjoying the city!

The people of Milwaukee love to celebrate. We celebrate our ethnicities, our sports teams, the arts, growing businesses and we especially celebrate our families.

On days when it is too cold to spend outside, explore Milwaukee's breweries and enjoy the fun tours and tastings. Follow up with a visit to Brady Street or the Historic Third Ward for a meal, some window-shopping and a walk through one of the numerous art galleries.

NEWaukee calls itself a social architecture firm, offering direction and structure in order to make our community greater. Fuel Milwaukee focuses on engagement, adding dimensions to the lives of young professionals.

Acquaint yourself with downtown Milwaukee's county parks and enjoy the festive holiday lights. Famous local hotspots include Cathedral Square, Zeidler Union Square, and Pere Marquette Park. You also can head to Red Arrow Park and skate at the outdoor ice rink!

A new trend celebrates the future, encouraging those who will define our future. Groups such as NEWaukee and Fuel Milwaukee channel the energy of early-career professionals. They attract young talent and work to fulfill social, volunteer, and professional interests. They are powerful forces in our civic life.

As you plan your Milwaukee visit, KEY Milwaukee is an outstanding resource. No matter what you choose to do in Milwaukee County, I hope you enjoy your time with us.

Among young people here, the level of enthusiasm, involvement, and action has surpassed any I have seen before.

Sincerely,

Sincerely,

Chris Abele, Milwaukee County Executive

Holiday Folk Fair International

Preserving cultural heritages for 71 years MILWAUKEE’S HOLIDAY FOLK FAIR International celebrates its 71st anniversary Nov. 21-23, once again providing the opportunity to travel around the globe without airline tickets, hotel reservations or jet lag.

Held in the Wisconsin Exposition Center at Wisconsin State Fair Park, 8200 W. Greenfield Ave., the three-day celebration features tantalizing foods, irresistible music, intriguing dance performances and a vast array of exhibits and merchandise.

Produced by the International Institute of Wisconsin, the Milwaukee-based nonprofit social service organization dedicated to racial, cultural and ethnic understanding, the award-winning event is one of the oldest and largest festivals of its kind. Fair-goers have the opportunity to learn the ways in which music, food, dance and art explain a culture’s history and traditions.

This year’s theme is “Celebrate the Culture of the Artisan.” Al Durtka, president of the International Institute, explains that artisans use manual and artistic skills to design items that may be functional or strictly decorative. These artisans are carvers, glass blowers, metal arts workers, potters, stained glass artists, instrument makers, weavers and craft makers.

“Master artisans are those who possess a very high degree of the knowledge and skills required to create items from the cultural traditions of groups, communities and individuals,” says Durtka. “Beginning this year, selected master artisans will become members of the Holiday Folk Fair International Guild of Master Artisans. Their masterpieces will be showcased and their knowledge and skills shared with fairgoers.”

Sidonka Wadina, pictured on the KEY cover of this issue, will be honored as a Master Artisan. More than 70 years ago, her grandmother, Johanna Biksadski, first exhibited Slovak folk art at the 8

Wisconsin Gas Co. and was a founding member of the Folk Fair. She preserved her ancestral culture by teaching Wadina straw weaving, egg decorating and folk painting. Wadina has kept the artistry alive by teaching classes throughout the world and inspiring others through her creations.

“The knowledge and skills of our Master Artisans are as varied as the objects created,” says Durtka. “Equally important is teaching the history of the art form and customs associated it. For 71 years, Holiday Folk Fair International has been a keeper of our rich and diverse living heritage, safeguarding the past, honoring the present and embracing the future.”

Special attractions in 2014 include invited international performers and artisans representing Canada, Ecuador, Japan and Ukraine.

Also part of Folk Fair is an exhibit by Sister Cities International featuring the winners and finalists for the organization’s 2014 Young Artists and Authors Showcase, with the theme “Connect Globally. Thrive Locally.” For more than 20 years, the showcase has given youth from around the globe the opportunity to artistically express their vision for a more unified peaceful world.

The popular bonsai exhibit returns, as well as the Kohl’s Color Wheels display and the Wisconsin Woodturners.

At every Folk Fair, the way various cultures prepare their cuisine intrigues visitors. Food booths offer

“The knowledge and skills of our Master Artisans are as varied as the objects created”

appetizers, main dishes, sandwiches and desserts, all authentically prepared and priced to encourage sampling.

At the Coffee House, coffee or tea, sweet treats and music tempt fest-goers. The Callen Construction Chef’s Stage, presented by Edible Milwaukee Magazine, features local chefs preparing traditional cuisine. The International Bazaar is the perfect place for holiday shopping with items to fit every budget. Booths decorated to represent the featured country offer items that showcase artistic traditions and handicrafts as well as holiday customs.

On Heritage Lane, visitors interact with ethnic volunteers to learn about the customs and traditions of many different cultures. “Passports” are available for children, who then have them stamped at the decorated booths.

Regularly scheduled shows at the All Nations Theater feature groups performing traditional music and dance with flair, drama and color. At the International Stage, attention focuses on dance performances by young people. At the Tanzhauz (Music Pavilion), attendees dance and sing along with a variety of musical stylings.

Holiday Folk Fair International hosts a Naturalization Ceremony on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The Education Day/Cultural Awareness Program also is held Friday for fourth- through eighth-grade students from the Greater Milwaukee area. On Sunday, the Around the World 5k Run/Walk benefitting The Salvation Army of Milwaukee County starts at 9 a.m. Phone 414-225-6225 or register online at www.folkfair.org. Also on Sunday, a religious service is held at 10:30 a.m.

Holiday Folk Fair International is open from 2-10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.7 p.m. Sunday.

Advance tickets are $10 each, with family four-packs for $36, and available for purchase on-line at www.folkfair.org.

Admission at the gate is $12 for adults; $8 for children ages 6 to 12; children under the age of five are admitted at no charge. Those 62 and over are admitted for $10, and all military personnel with a military ID card are admitted free.

For more information, visit www.folkfair.org, phone the International Institute of Wisconsin at 414-225-6220, or follow Holiday Folk Fair on Facebook.

Join the fun at Holiday Lights Festival kick-off Nov. 20

THE 16TH ANNUAL Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival, Nov. 20-Dec. 28, begins with a gala opening night on Thursday, Nov. 20. The six-week festival hosts a switch-flipping ceremony in Pere Marquette Park between W. State St. and W. Kilbourn Ave. along the Milwaukee River.

The celebration features music, dancing, Santa and a much-anticipated fireworks show.

Be merry and bright while enjoying music by Chasin’ Mason, Naima Adedapo and Jenny Thiel; an appearance by Radio WHT; dance routines from Studio VIA and Dance Academy of Mexico; plus an ice show by Art Below Zero. Special guests are Billie the Brownie and Santa Claus.

Entertainment begins at 6 p.m. At approximately 6:30 p.m., invited guests Mayor Tom Barrett, County Executive Chris Abele and members of the Milwaukee Common Council lead the crowd in a countdown. Fireworks synchronized to holiday songs top off the program and free Jingle Bus rides operate from Pere Marquette Park, taking guests past all of downtown’s newly lit decorations.

Not to be missed are the chandeliers suspended above Wisconsin Ave. Also delighting kids of all ages is the décor in Pere Marquette Park at West State and Old World 3rd Streets, Cathedral Square Park at North Jefferson and East Wells Streets, and Zeidler Union Square at West Michigan between 3rd and 4th Streets. 42

The themes for the parks are “Candy Cottage Forest” at Pere Marquette Park, “Community Spirit Park” at Cathedral Square Park and “Frosty Frolics” at Zeidler Union Square.

Milwaukee Downtown, Business Improvement District #21 is the organization responsible for the procurement, installment and maintenance of these decorations. The BID also coordinates the Nov. 20 kick-off ceremony in Pere Marquette Park.

After opening night, Jingle Bus rides operate from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursdays through Sundays, Nov. 20-Dec. 28. The 40-minute tour is narrated by Milwaukee Downtown’s Public Service Ambassadors. Rides are $1 per person and depart from the festival’s Warming House in The Shops of Grand Avenue’s Center Court, Third Street and Wisconsin Avenue. Riders who park in The Shops of Grand Avenue’s attached structure will receive a $3 parking voucher. The Jingle Bus will not operate on Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day.

For additional information on the Milwaukee Holiday Lights Festival, phone 414-220-4700 or visit milwaukeeholidaylights.com.
