Welcome to O‘ahu HTA / Chuck Painter
E
very island in our necklace of Hawaiian islands is a jewel. Look closely, you’ll see that each island has a distinct personality. You’ll discover paradise wherever you go, but make it a goal to visit each island and see if you can decipher the trait that makes each one unique. Compared to our neighboring islands, O‘ahu moves at a faster pace. It’s the site of the state capital Honolulu, and the hub of government, military defense and international business. Turn the pages and you’ll discover more of the island’s exciting attractions, shows, lu‘au and ocean activities. On O‘ahu, you’ll find something for all:
History ‘Iolani Palace, located in downtown Honolulu, is the nation’s only official state residence of royalty. Historic buildings, many of them listed on the National Register of Historic Places, sit within a two-mile radius. Nearby Chinatown bustles daily amid historic buildings and unique businesses. On December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor gained nationwide attention when Japan’s Imperial Navy carried out a surprise attack. The Pearl Harbor Historic Sites consist of four locations illustrating America’s entry into World War II to its end when the Instrument of Surrender was signed aboard the USS Missouri. Culture Visit the island’s largest cultural attraction, the
Polynesian Cultural Center in La‘ie. Experience the Pacific cultures of Samoa, Aotearoa (New Zealand), Tonga, Fiji, Tahiti and Hawai‘i via interactive villages and exhibits. At Waimea Valley, learn about Hawai‘i culture and history, deeply rooted in spirituality and traditions. Explore botanical gardens and take part in daily activities.
Environment The island offers hiking trails to suit all levels,
botanical gardens and nationally recognized white sand beaches in every direction. Take to the road for a drive to the countryside—the North Shore—out to the community of Kailua and back toward Waikiki along the scenic Ka Iwi State Scenic Shoreline. For panoramic views stretching from Diamond Head to Pearl Harbor, head to Tantalus via Round Top Drive. Stop at Pu‘u Ualaka‘a Park and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl. Sunset is the best time!
People We are a mix of global ethnicities, cultures and traditions. O‘ahu is called the Gathering Place for a reason! While here, get to know the people behind the counter. Talk story, get the inside scoop and make new friends. Your vacation will be all the more richer because of it. Visitors come from around the world seeking a memorable vacation experience, a getaway to paradise. Hawai‘i will most certainly provide just that. But take one step further and open your eyes and heart to the adventure of getting to know the unknown. Arrive as a tourist, leave as a traveler. THIS WEEK OAHU

Humpback Whales
he state’s whale watch season is underway with tours running through April, so make your reservations for a close encounter of the whale kind. Researchers say there’s a group of humpback whales known as the North Pacific stock that winter in three areas: Hawai‘i, western Mexico and the islands of southern Japan. The approximately 3,000-mile journey from Alaska to Hawai‘i has few stops as the whales travel about three to seven miles per hour. The trip has been made in as few as 36 days. Scientists believe that humpback whales don’t indulge in the islands’ local cuisine, unlike those of us on vacation. That’s because their food, such as krill, plankton and small fish, only live in the whales’ cool, nutrient-rich homewaters of Alaska. A hunting technique that’s unique to humpback whales is known as “bubble netting.” A group of whales distract, confuse and herd their pray near the ocean surface using air bubbles, then swim upwards with open mouths to feast. Like bears that gorge themselves before going into winter hibernation during which time their babies are born, humpback whales feed while at home in Alaska, then migrate to Hawai‘i where they mate, calve and nurse their young. Did you know that the gestation period is 11 months for humpback whales? Newborns are about 13-16 feet long, and

nurse on their mother’s fat-rich milk, gaining up to 200 pounds a day during the first weeks of life. As with most species, mothers are very protective of and affectionate with their calves, often swimming nearby and touching them with their flippers. Did you know that humpback whales are active, acrobatic whales? They’ll sometimes throw themselves completely out of the water, known as a breach. Also look for spy hops; tail, pec or penduncle slaps; and head lunges. If you’re lucky, you just might see a mother teaching her calf how it’s done. Dedicated whale watch tours offer lots of information on our annual visitors with a naturalist who can answer questions and inform guests about any signs of whale activity. Morning or afternoon tours offer a continental breakfast, lunch and/ or snorkeling options. Ask about a “whale guarantee.” This means that if the tour is unable to spot a humpback, you’ll receive a free return on a tour until a whale is sighted.

owntown Honolulu is a rich mix of historic buildings where ali‘i (members of Hawai‘i’s nobility) once lived and sleek modern-day structures reflect the mid-day sun. Hawai‘i is unique to the nation’s states in many ways, but a visit to Honolulu’s Capital District best illustrates the state’s unusual place in history. It’s the only one to have once been ruled by its own monarchy. Architecture buffs will find a treasure trove of jewels. At the center of it all facing busy King Street, is the stately ‘Iolani Palace, designed in an American Florentine style. It was the first building in Honolulu to have electricity. After the overthrow of the monarchy, ‘Iolani Palace served as a

legislative building for the new government until 1968. Historic buildings, many of them listed on the National Register of Historic Places, sit within a three-mile radius of the palace: ‘Iolani Barracks on the palace grounds, Kamehameha V Post Office across the street, Ali‘iolani Hale that’s home to the Hawai‘i State Supreme Court, Kawaiaha‘o Church, Mission Houses Museum, Honolulu Hale where the Honolulu mayor and city council hold offices, Hawai‘i State Library and Washington Palace where Queen Lili‘uokalani was arrested
during the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Next door is St. Andrew’s Cathedral; it was built by the Anglican Church using stones shipped from England. The construction of Ali‘iolani Hale, now the State Judiciary Building, was commissioned by Kamehameha V who died before it was finished. King Kalakaua dedicated the building two years later in 1874. This palace, meant to be a place of grandeur for the monarchy, was the site of its dissolution on January 17, 1893. Kawaiaha‘o Church was built by the first missionaries to settle in Honolulu. Its walls are made of coral rock and it is the burial site of King William Lunalilo and his parents. It still functions as a house of worship and all are welcome to attend Sunday morning services.

n between sunbathing on the beach or relaxing poolside, you’ll want to check out Waikiki’s many free leisurely pursuits.
• Waikiki is more than a visitor destination—every grain of
sand on the beach has a story to tell, and you can learn some of them via the self-guided Waikiki Historic Trail with its designated markers. There are 23 sites that will take you from Kapi‘olani Park to the Ala Wai Canal at the intersection of Kalakaua Avenue and Ala Wai Blvd. Wear sturdy walking shoes! Visit waikikihistorictrail.org for map and info.
• Waking up early may be the exact opposite of what you have planned, but we encourage you to make an exception. The morning hours are perfect for a walk along Waikiki Beach from the Waikiki Natatorium War Memorial (Map F:G1) to Hilton Hawaiian Village (Map F:G17). Close your eyes and take in the calming sound of waves on the shore and feel the cool sand between your toes. Grab any spot on the beach to take in the splash of sunrise colors and watch Waikiki awaken. • Did you know the Honolulu Surfing Museum is located in Waikiki? It’s in Jimmy Buffett’s at the Beachcomber, and displays surfing and historical artifacts. Chill out with cocktail in hand from the museum bar, and enjoy the photographs and surfboards, some of which Jimmy Buffett takes out on the water whenever he’s in town. Map F:D8.
• Opened in 1927 as a tribute to the more than 10,000 servicemen from Hawai‘i who served in World War II, the Waikiki Natatorium War Memorial was designed as a living memorial. Although it’s currently closed, The Friends of the Natatorium continues to advocate for its preservation and restoration. The 100 x 40 meter saltwater swimming pool is listed on both the National and State Registers of Historic Places. Olympic Gold Medalist and Father of International Surfing Duke Kahanamoku, Esther Williams, Buster Crabbe and Johnny Weissmuller have all swam in its waters. Oceanside near Waikiki Aquarium. Can you
NAME THAT FISH?
C
hoosing the right fish from the menu is like selecting fine wine—each has its own taste, aroma and texture. People eat twice as much seafood in Hawai‘i as the U.S. per capita national average. What does that mean to you? Every restaurant has fresh fish on the menu with a not-so-familiar Hawaiian name. See if you can name any of the favorites pictured. Answers below.
1
Soft and moist with a delicate flavor, it can be baked, steamed or sauteed.
2 Fresh fish are caught off the shores of the Hawaiian Islands
3
Popular with chefs, it has a juicy, rich flavor with a roast pork-like aroma. Texture is very tender.
This fish is tasty without any seasoning. It has a delicate, slightly fruity flavor and a subtle aroma. Texture is succulent and meaty.
4
This delicately flavored fish has a tender texture perfectly suited for baking, poaching and sauteing.

The Burger
T
he humble hamburger first caught widespread attention at the World’s Fair in St. Louis, Mo. in 1904. It sure has come a long way since then—fried, grilled, flame broiled, slider sized, supersized and more. All we want is a juicy, tasty burger that hits the spot. Here’s where to find one: Moose McGillycuddy’s offers a long list of burgers from the Basic to the Fantasy Burger boasting three patties, bacon, sauteed mushrooms and onions and cheese. But for their Famous Burgers are made from grass fed cattle from the Maui Cattle Company. Here’s where it gets fun: the Molokai BBQ Burger includes kalua pig that’s been tossed in a mango BBQ sauce. Deep-fried pickles come with crispy bacon and Monterey Jack cheese in the Angelica Pickles Burger. And if that’s not enough, the Lucille Ball is a cheese-stuffed burger patty that’s beer battered and deep fried, and tossed in wing sauce. Woohoo! Chili’s Grill & Bar has upped the ante with a menu of craft burgers in which you can custom order a burger to your distinct taste. Prefer something other than a regular beef patty? Backyard-Style Hawaiian Luau™
Venture to O‘ahu’s west side and join Germaine’s ‘ohana (family) as you experience a traditional lu‘au that captures the aloha spirit of a backyard family gathering. After being greeted with a Hawaiian shell lei, the call of the conch shell signals the start of your special evening. Welcome the Royal Court of Polynesia, then see the uncovering of the main course—the kalua pua‘a (roasted pig) from the imu (the underground oven). The evening’s all-you-can-eat buffet is ready, and features an array of Hawaiian-American selections. Whether your palate is adventurous or not, you’ll find something to your liking! As you enjoy your meal, a musical journey to the islands of Samoa, Tahiti, New Zealand and Hawai‘i begins. You’ll be entranced by the “Dances of the Pacific” as hips sway, hands beckon and dancers share stories of love and life in old Hawai‘i. Laulau—It’s like unwrapping a gift—peel away the outer ti leaves to find edible taro leaves that look and taste much like cooked spinach. Inside, you’ll find either pork, chicken or butterfish. Usually cooked in the imu (underground oven), laulau is also steamed on the stovetop. Kalua pig—The highlight of every lu‘au is the uncovering of the kalua pig that’s been cooking in the imu for hours. Its flavor is smoky, salty; consistency is tender and juicy. It can also be cooked in a slow cooker or oven for the same delicious flavor. Lomilomi salmon—It may not be a traditional Hawaiian dish, but lomilomi is a favorite. It’s made with diced salmon, tomatoes, green and round onions and salt to taste. Let it marinate overnight to enhance the flavor of the salmon. The salmon’s omega-3 fatty acids are a plus!
Poi—Certainly an acquired taste, poi is made from mashing steamed or baked taro root, and adding water to create a desired consistency. Because the taro plant, or kalo, is central to the Hawaiian people; its cultivation is an honored tradition. THIS WEEK OAHU

nvesting in a vacation property in Hawai‘i can be fun and profitable depending on your goals, usage and timing. If you plan to make Hawai‘i a regular destination for your family, a corporate incentive for your employees, or even as a second home, one possible option might be a condo-hotel. Q: “What’s the difference between a regular condo and a condo-hotel?” A: A condo-hotel is generally a wholly owned property you can purchase that is zoned for transient accommodations. This means

it can be utilized for daily, weekly, or longer-term rentals. Regular condominiums often have restrictions that disallow short-term rentals. Condohotel units are also operated under the Innkeeper Laws, as opposed to the Landlord Tenant Code, which allows for easier access for management. They are also usually sold fully furnished and often have onsite management as an option for owners to use to manage their unit (i.e. Trump, Outrigger, Ritz-Carlton, Aqua). Most guests of these properties do not even

have in-room laundry and all are taxed at the commercial property tax rate (higher than the residential rate). Financing can also be more difficult. So do your homework and consult with an expert when deciding if a condo hotel is the right purchase for you.

Your ocean adventure awaits
Under the glare of the island sun, the Pacific’s shimmering surface beckons to beachgoers just as a frothy tropical drink tempts a sip. Boasting miles of coastline and award-winning beaches, O‘ahu offers excellent opportunities for an array of ocean activities.
Turn up the fun a notch
Feel the need for speed? Want thrilling ocean action? Get wet via a host of activities that will send you soaring, skiing, sailing, surfing and more—it’s fast and furious fun! H2O Sports lets you fly like a superhero—think Marvel’s Iron Man! H2O Sports is the only place in Hawai‘i where you can do just that via the water-propelled Jetlev Jet Pack. A certified flight instructor gets you up in the air—up to 30 feet high! Other activities include parasailing, jet skiing, scuba diving, surf lessons, plus banana boat and bumper boat rides. Hawaii Water Sports Center has a full lineup of ocean activities available in one place: bumper tube or banana boat rides, jet skiing, wakeboarding, parasailing, waterskiing, snorkeling, surfing or scuba diving. Take a surfing lesson at an exclusive surf spot where you can have your own private waves. Carve up the water and ride the wake on a wakeboarding activity

Sportfishing for big game
Live Bait Sportfishing takes you out to deep waters off the Makaha coast where large pelagic predatory fish congregate. Beneath the surface, giant blue marlin, mahimahi, wahoo, yellowfin, bigeye and skipjack tuna roam the waters. It’s where you’ll experience some of the best sportfishing in the islands.
All aboard for an exciting ocean tour
Get out into the domain of marine life with an ocean tour. Choose from active, in-the-water fun, or comfortably watch marine life without getting wet. Specialized tours focus on specific creatures such as dolphins. Either way, prepare for a close encounter of the marine kind! Atlantis Submarines takes you down to depths of 100 feet without getting wet! Ride out to the Atlantis dive site ensconced in an air-conditioned, Coast Guard-approved, state-of-the-art submarine. Peer through large view ports to see colorful marine life, green turtles, sharks, eels and stingrays. Gold Certified by the Hawai‘i Ecotourism Assoc., Atlantis has recycled sunken ships and other objects to create undersea “homes for fish” and contributed to the growth of marine life. Transportation is included from select Waikiki Hotels. Dolphin Star—a member of Hawai‘i’s Dolphin Smart program—takes you to see wild dolphins off the sunny Wai‘anae Coast. Ride aboard the eco-friendly catamaran, a 65-foot, twodeck power vessel designed with dolphin watching in mind. Spy spinner, bottlenose and spotted dolphins; sighting guaranteed or get a raincheck. Ask about charter cruises for special occasions. Dolphin Excursions takes passengers on a marine safari aboard the fast and maneuverable Nai‘a 1 to see dolphins. If

Bob’s 250-page fish photo book, Every Fish Tells a Story, is $7.50 with snorkel gear for the week (reg. $28). Free 24-hour interisland gear return. Snorkel Bob’s also offers bookings on a variety of land, sea and air activities. Humpback whales are here!
Hawai‘i’s whale watch season is always an exciting time as we seek to learn more about our annual visitors and see them up close on a tour. Naturalists will explain the what and why of these whales, so be sure to make reservations on your vacation. For more information on these gentle giants and who to call for tours, turn to pages 40-41.
Found only in the Hawaiian Islands, the endangered Hawaiian monk seal generally hunts for food at night and rests during the day. If you should see one basking on the shoreline, please let it be. There’s only an estimated 1,200 seals in existence, so people are advised to keep their distance and not disturb them.
