Before there was the Las Vegas Strip, before the palatial hotels and dazzling skyline, there was downtown. Of course, at the time, it wasn’t called that. Downtown was Las Vegas. Las Vegas was officially founded as a city on May 15, 1905. In the early days of the city, illicit gambling and liquor were the big draws of a section of town called “Block 16,” which was also a red-light district, with brothels in saloons with colorful names like the Double O, The Arcade and the Star Saloon. In 1931, gambling was legalized, and in the early 1940s, attention began to shift toward The Strip and

downtown was overshadowed by the draw of the megaresorts. Today, though, downtown is experiencing a dramatic rebirth, and for many, it remains a source of an alternative, perhaps more authentic, Las Vegas experience; one that’s grittier and more energetic, less manufactured, less by-the-book and driven by value. It’s estimated just 7% of Las Vegas visitors venture downtown, causing

those who know and love downtown to scratch their heads in bafflement. Downtown, after all, is a non-stop party, often under the massive video screen of the Fremont Street Experience, built in 1994. Downtown casinos have much lower table limits than Strip casinos, and the “hold” on slot machines is lower, a significant benefit to gamblers. The values of downtown extend to hotel rooms as well, with room rates a fraction of those on The Strip. Beyond the tremendous values to be found downtown, there’s also its distinct personality. The wild, weird and wacky thrive downtown. From a Denny’s with a wedding chapel, to the acclaimed Mob Museum, Drink & Drag (a bar and nightclub staffed by drag queens) and the controversial Heart Attack Grill restaurant, to its legions of buskers performing nightly for tips, it’s a mixed bag of the raw, the absurd and the entirely unforgettable. Soon, there will even be a giant slot machine that doubles as a launching point for zip lines, called Slotzilla. In recent years, downtown has branched out to become a hotbed of new bars and restaurants. Recent additions include Park on Fremont, Commonwealth, Backstage Bar & Billiards, Radio City Pizza, Mob Bar and Atomic Liquors, just to name a few.

Downtown’s casinos have been revitalized, like the rebranding of Fitzgerald’s as The D, with its serviceoriented culture and grasp of what so many love about downtown, including buxom go-go dancers, a welcoming atmosphere and a second floor with vintage slot machines for those who appreciate the feel of coins rather than paper as they play. Beyond the Fremont Street area of downtown, there’s an increased sense of something larger being built. There’s a blossoming arts district, the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, for example. Along with Zappos.com’s CEO, Tony Hsieh, much of the credit of downtown’s ongoing resurgence must go to former Mayor Oscar Goodman, a colorful character who did a stint as a mob lawyer, then spent 12 years as mayor championing downtown revitalization. He recently released his autobiography, “Being Oscar: From Mob Lawyer to Mayor of Las Vegas-Only in America.” Ultimately, downtown for many, will always be its law-skirting roots, its cheap hooch and gambling, its quirky charm and unflagging commitment to debauchery. There’s something for everyone downtown, and hopefully, its brightest days are still ahead. 51

f you’re looking for a great slice of pie, and not of the dessert variety, look no further than Slice of Vegas inside Mandalay Bay. This place has the works for anybody who loves a great pizza and a fun Italian dining environment. The atmosphere in Slice of Vegas lets you know that you’re going to be in for a treat with whatever you order. Whether that’s a savory pasta dish, something Vegan or Gluten Free (yes, they have that covered!) or some of their awesome pizza every bite will be enjoyed. Start off with “Not Your Mama’s Garlic Bread,” which is warm Italian bread slices, with olive oil and basil pesto, accompanied with a roasted garlic head, and of course be sure to add the mozzarella cheese to it. If you’d rather start out with something a little lighter, the Calamari is fantastic too. It’s crispy fried then tossed with lemon zest, strips of pickled peppers and fresh parsley served over a base of spicy marinara. There are other options for starters, but how can you go wrong with some of the classics? Moving on to two of their signature pizzas are the BBQ Chicken, (which if you’re anything like myself, is one of your favorites) and the supremely delicious 4 Cheese Truffle. The BBQ Chicken is made with their savory sweet house BBQ sauce and topped with a blend of mozzarella, grilled chicken breast, sliced red onions and chopped basil. The 4 Cheese Truffle isn’t anything to be messed with either as it’s a combination of mozzarella, ricotta, Parmigiano-Reggiano and Fontina cheeses over a roasted garlic Alfredo sauce, and finished with a drizzle of white truffle oil. Both pizzas are cooked with a thin perfectly crispy crust. With eating all of this mouth-watering food, you’re going to want something cold to wash it all down, and Slice of Vegas has you covered. They have wine by the glass, by the bottle, sangria, signature cocktails, eight cold beers on draft and 50 more in bottles. The dessert menu here is a treat as well satisfying the most decadent sweet tooth. Try the Vegan Chocolate Cake, and trust me that you would never know that this isn’t the real deal. So rich and dense, the chocolate makes this something that I want to eat everyday. The House Banana Split is something not to be missed by any means either, especially if you enjoy Rice Crispy Treats, vanilla ice cream, marshmallows and waffle cones. This is a food lovers dream. So get down to Slice of Vegas, and treat yourself to a delicious time tonight!
