Reggae in the Desert, one of the most successful music festivals in southern Nevada, continues to spotlight internationally known acts. The two-day music festival, in its 12th year, will take place on Saturday, June 15 and Sunday, June 16 from noon until 11pm at the Clark County Amphitheatre, 500 S. Grand Central 3DUNZD\ 6WHHO 3XOVH /XFLDQR &DSOHWRQ 0DUFLD *ULIÂżWKV DQG 7KH Green headline this year's impressive lineup. Steel Pulse, one of Britain’s greatest reggae bands, started out playing authentic roots reggae with a bit of jazz and Latin music, eventually adding in a R&B sound. Steel Pulse’s 1978 debut album Handsworth Revolution is regarded by critics as a landmark of British reggae. Luciano is a Jamaican roots reggae artist who combines his love of God and beauty into a soulful blend of rock and R&B style reggae. Capleton LQĂ€XHQFHG GDQFHKDOOÂśV return to reggae tradition. The Jamaican artist, sometimes referred to as King Shango, began his pursuit as a dancehall deejay at the age of 18. 0DUFLD *ULIÂżWKV, the “Queen of Reggae,â€? gained success early on with hits like “Truly,â€? “Melody Lifeâ€? and “Feel Like -XPSLQJ ´ $VLGH IURP EHLQJ D VROR DUWLVW *ULIÂżWKV ZRUNHG ZLWK Bob Andy in the group Bob and Marcia from 1970-1974, before becoming a member of the I Threes, a background group that performed with Bob Marley & the Wailers. Dining Out in Style McCall’s Heartland Grill T he newest addition to the recently renovated Stratosphere is McCall’s Heartland Grill. Their tagline is “We’ve taken the best of the Midwest and added a touch of the coast,” and that is exactly what you’ll get. The food is accessible and delicious, with a tendency toward fun, spicy additions to your old favorites. Think bacon wrapped prawns – which is already a great combination – at McCall’s they add jalapeno and guava barbecue sauce. Chicken wings are tossed in watermelon buffalo sauce for a sweet and spicy treat. Their potato skins are loaded with steak and smoked cheddar, but there is one more appetizer that can’t be ignored. The PBB&J Crostini is the perfect Vegas dish. A toasted baguette topped with peanut butter, bacon, bleu cheese and jalapeno jelly – this is an unforgettable flavor combination. You may have to order a second plate! For entrees, choose land, sea or both. The steak options are true to the theme of the restaurant; you’ll find a classic New York Strip, but at McCall’s it is coffee rubbed and served with bleu cheese butter. Twisted Vegas Roulette: Entertainment in The Round By Scott Roeben

There’s just something about roulette. It could be the simplicity of the game. You place a wager on a number, if it hits, you get 35 times your bet in return. No formulas or strategy required. Lady Luck smiles, or she doesn’t. If the basic game isn’t exciting enough, there are specialized bets to keep things interesting. A split between two numbers pays 17-to-1. A “street” bet is a wager on three numbers in a row, paying 11-to-1. A row bet covers 12 numbers and pays 2-to-1. Perhaps one of the most popular bets in roulette is the red-or-black bet. It pays even money, and everyone has an opinion about which is luckiest. You can also bet on whether the next number will be odd or even. Maybe the allure of roulette has to do with its glamorous portrayal in the movies. It’s made an appearance in “Casablanca,” “The Sting,” “Casino,” “Run Lola Run” and many others. Certain roulette sessions have become Las Vegas lore. In 2004, a Londoner named Ashley Revell sold all his possessions, bet $135,000 on red at a roulette table at The Plaza, downtown, and won. (He 56

gave the dealer a $600 tip, by the way.) In 2010, cast members of a TV show called “The Buried Life” made what was publicized as the largest roulette bet in history. They first made a $125,000 bet on a roulette table at the Golden Gate, doubled their money, then let it ride. Their $250,000 bet didn’t go as well, but it remains an unforgettable roulette moment. Roulette has a storied history. The word itself means “little wheel.” Our modern roulette wheel was invented in 18th century France, although Blaise Pascal devised an earlier version while searching for a perpetual motion machine. The game has pretty good odds, with a house advantage of 5.26%. Not the best in the casino, but not the worst. That’s for the American version of roulette, with a 0 and 00. You can improve your chances by finding a European table, available at several Vegas casinos, but often not readily, with a single zero. Single zero tables lower the house edge to 2.70%. When you can find a European table, you’ll want to keep an eye out for some special bets, sometimes called “French bets.” They include the “voisins du zero” bet (or “neighbors of zero”), “jeu zero” (zero game), “le tiers du cylindre” (“thirds of the wheel”), “orphelins” (“orphans”) and others. A curious fact about roulette is that all the numbers add up to “666,” hence its nickname, “The Devil’s Game.” Some just call it the “King of Casino Games.” So, give roulette a whirl! No tuxedo required. At least not in Las Vegas.

hypnotist, so it’s always a good time,” said Jill Holland, a 5-year Las Vegas resident and office manager. “Marc (Savard) has as much fun as we do. I always take my outof-town friends to his show because you walk out feeling great. He’s really funny.” You never know what you’re going to get on any given night. Savard selects a group of volunteers from the audience and invites them on stage. While not all of the volunteers take to the hypnosis, many do, checking out while checking in to their inner comedian. Some nights men will dance like the toned “Thunder From Down Under” chaps, or ladies will imitate their favorite farm animal. It’s all in good fun, and never dull. “It’s like a different show every time you go,” said John Battaglia, a local IT specialist. “We go probably two or three times a year and really like (Marc) because he’s never mean spirited with the guys on stage.” But Battaglia leaves the volunteering to his friends. “I don’t know about being hypnotized, but my friends have gone up there and they liked it,” he said. “It’s bizarre. They really went under and we still laugh about it.” Savard, who moved to Las Vegas with his wife more than 10 years ago, has been 58

pulling people in and putting them under on stage for more than 20 years. It was by accident that he wandered in to a hypnosis show when he was 18. “I was fascinated. I couldn’t believe how the power of words could influence behavior,” Savard said. The phenomenon he experienced continued to crowd his thoughts while he attended medical school. “I am a curious guy, so I explored it,” he said. Friends got wind of his new hobby. “They said ‘Why not hypnotize us,’ so I did,” Savard said. Within the first year, through word of mouth alone, he was booked in six shows. The following year he had 52 shows. That’s when he knew he had to make the call. “I had to call my parents and tell them I was not going to be a doctor but a freak show entertainer,” he said. “It was not a popular decision.” As his roster of shows swelled to 200, his parents were supportive, although possibly still hoping their 23-year-old son would somehow return to his original career path of practicing medicine, not comedy hypnosis. But then another accident caused his career, and life, to pause.

A drunk driver hit head on the car Savard was driving in. His back broken, skull fractured, Savard was forced to cancel his upcoming shows and put his life on hold for the long recovery ahead of him. “I was very fortunate to survive,” Savard said, quietly before bouncing back to his quick-witted style. “My mom, being the loving, smothering mother she is, said that this is a sign, you can’t be an entertainer.” In fact, the accident strengthened his belief in the power of the mind. “Because of my (hypnosis training) I did all natural healing without medication, which was important to me after being in hypnosis,” he said. After a lengthy recovery, Savard spent 10 years traveling around the country to discuss the dangers of drunk driving, as well as the benefits of hypnosis. “That also helped me get through the emotional part of the car crash, not just the physical,” he said. Originally from Canada, he moved to Las Vegas during the hottest time of the year 11 years ago to permanently to support his burgeoning career. “I would be performing in the States and have three days off, but I wouldn’t be able to go home because border crossing is a pain in the ass,” Savard said. But his calendar was filling up with gigs in many states as well as in international ports. “I told my wife it was a good idea to move to the US side. She didn’t think it was a great idea, to spend more time with me,” Savard cracked. He began to investigate how the Las Vegas entertainment industry ran, and

connected quickly with longtime producer David Saxe. They have been working together for six years. Savard is a hypnotist who doesn’t get much sleep. He and his wife have three girls, ages 4, 6 and 8 with another on the way. He is unusual in that he isn’t what’d you call your ordinary Strip entertainer. “I am thinking about how to fill seats every night because I own and produce my own show,” Savard said. “It’s great because I get to roll my sleeves up and be a part of my show, be a part of the return on investments. I’m not the classic Vegas headliner who wakes up in the afternoon after drinking and socializing all night. That would be the most opposite of my life.” He rises at 6:15 a.m. each morning, usually with a child bouncing on the bed in lieu of an actual alarm clock. He proceeds to his phone and laptop to market his show and work on his latest book, “I Hypnotize My Children and So Do You.” “Personal development is important to me,” he said. “I like helping people.” This is why he stays each night after his show at the Saxe Theater to shake hands and talk with guests who may have questions or want more information about his programs, such as the “Pathway to Power” CD set. “We are naturally susceptible, which is why advertising works so well, and that can be powerful” to use in life, Savard said of hypnosis. “I am a big proponent of betterment of the mind so I love providing answers to questions or products people may have after the show. I think that’s a part of the whole entertainment experience I want them to have.
